Factors Influencing Listening Comprehension of English Radio News Broadcasts

Several factors influence listening comprehension of English radio news broadcasts. The study adopted a questionnaire to investigate students' recognition of these factors. On the basis of this analysis, students put emphasis on vocabulary and background knowledge and they were aware of the approaches to better listening comprehension and making some practical preparations before doing the listening tasks. However some differences exist between the effective listeners and less-effective listeners,specially regarding to speech rate and out-of-class relevant practice.

Previs-Real:Interactive virtual previsualization system for news shooting rehearsal and evaluation

Background In the demanding field of live news broadcasting,the intricate studio production procedures and tight schedules pose significant challenges for physical rehearsals by cameramen.This paper explores the design and implementation of a lightweight virtual news previsualization system,leveraging virtual production technology and interaction design methods to address the lack of fidelity in presentations and manipulations,and the quantitative feedback of rehearsal effects in previous virtual approaches.Methods Our system,Previs-Real,is informed by user investigation with professional cameramen and studio technicians,and adheres to principles of high fidelity,accurate replication of actual hardware operations,and real-time feedback on rehearsal results.The system's software and hardware development are implemented based on Unreal Engine and accompanying toolsets,incorporating cutting-edge modeling and camera calibration methods.Results We validated Previs-Real through a user study,demonstrating superior performance in previsualization shooting tasks using the virtual system compared to traditional camera setups.The findings,supported by both objective performance metrics and subjective responses,underline Previs-Real's effectiveness and potential in transforming news broadcasting rehearsals.Conclusions Previs-Real eliminates the requirement for complex equipment interconnections and team coordination inherent in a physical studio by implementing methodologies complying the above principles,objectively resulting in a lightweight design of applicable version of virtual news previsualization system.It offers a novel solution to the challenges in news studio previsualization by focusing on key operational features rather than full environment replication.This design approach is equally effective in the process of designing lightweight systems in other fields.

Reporting the Reporter： An Evaluation of Health Reporting Among Radio and Television Outfits in Lagos, Nigeria

Radio and television outfits constitute a subset of the mass media belonging specifically to the broadcast system, and vitally provide information useful for development （among others） to its adherents, consumers, and audiences. Health reporting or health news is an aspect of health communication through which the audiences are informed of all matters relating to their total well-being. In this paper, the authors investigated news reporting among broadcast outfits in Lagos-Nigeria as a measure to monitor or watchdog and report the reporter to his clients. The investigation was in two parts： One looked at his strategies in covering and reporting health in the environment; while the other examined news bulletins to subject its health news to a content analysis. The study revealed that health is a neglected concern in broadcast reporting with trigger or vulture approach/practice among broadcast outfits.

USING RADIO NEWS BROADCASTS AS LISTENING MATERIAL

INTRODUCTION As English teachers, we have devoted a lot of time to the teaching of listening comprehension using radio broadcasts. We began by using VOA news in special English with freshmen and a mixture of news in special English and standard news broadcasts with sophomores. Later BBC news was used. We accumulated a considerable amount of experience and did some research into the design of listening comprehension exercises. This article discusses how listening ability may be improved by using such broadcasts.
