In Germany, diamond grinding is frequently used to improve the evenness and skid resistance of concrete pavement surfaces. Since diamond grinding has been observed to affect tyre/pavement noise emission favourably, the relationship among surface texture, concrete composition and noise emission of concrete pavement surfaces has been sys- tematically investigated. The simulation program SPERoN was used in a parameter study to investigate the main factors which affect noise emission. Based on the results of the simulations, textured concrete surfaces were produced by using a laboratory grinding machine. As well as the composition of the concrete, the thickness and spacing of the diamond blades were varied. The ability of the textured surfaces to reduce noise emission was assessed from the texture characteristics and air flow resistance of textured surfaces measured in the laboratory. It was found that concrete composition and, in particular, the spacing of the blades affected the reduction in noise emission considerably. The noise emission behaviour of numerous road sections was also considered in field investigations. The pavement surfaces had been textured by diamond grinding during the last years or decades. The results show that diamond grinding is able to provide good, durable noise- reducing properties. Several new pavement sections were investigated using thicknesses and spacings of the blades similar to those used in the laboratory to optimize noise emission reduction. It is concluded that diamond grinding is a good alternative to exposed aggregate concrete for the production of low-noise pavement surfaces. 展开更多

Low-frequency flicker noise is usually associated with material defects or imperfection of fabrication procedure. Up to now, there is only very limited knowledge about flicker noise of the topological insulator, whose topologically protected conducting surface is theoretically immune to back scattering. To suppress the bulk conductivity we synthesize antimony doped Bi2Se3 nanowires and conduct transport measurements at cryogenic temperatures. The low-frequency current noise measurement shows that the noise amplitude at the high-drain current regime can be described by Hooge's empirical relationship, while the noise level is significantly lower than that predicted by Hooge's model near the Dirac point. Furthermore, different frequency responses of noise power spectrum density for specific drain currents at the low drain current regime indicate the complex origin of noise sources of topological insulator. 展开更多

Concrete pavement is accompanied by two major functional properties, namely noise emission and friction, which are closely related to pavement surface texture. While several technologies have been developed to mitigate tirepavement noise and improve driving friction by surface texturization, limited information is available to compare the advantages and disadvantages of different surface textures. In this study,a state-of-the-art and state-of-thepractice review is conducted to investigate the noise reduction and friction improvement technologies for concrete pavement surfaces. The commonly used tests for characterizing the surface texture, skid resistance, and noise emission of concrete pavement were first summarized. Then, the texturing methods for both fresh and hardened concrete pavement surfaces were discussed, and the friction, noise emission and durability performances of various surface textures were compared. It is found that the next generation concrete surface(NGCS)texture generally provides the best noise emission performance and excellent friction properties. The exposed aggregate concrete(EAC)and optimized diamond grinding textures are also promising alternatives.Lastly, the technical parameters for the application of both diamond grinding and diamond grinding&grooving textures were recommended based on the authors'research and practical experience in Germany and the US.This study offers a convenient reference to the pavement researchers and engineers who seek to quickly understand relevant knowledge and choose the most appropriate surface textures for concrete pavements. 展开更多

The health monitoring has been studied to ensure integrity of design of engine structure by detection, quantification, and prediction of damages.Early detection of faults may allow the downtime of maintenance to be rescheduled, thus preventing sudden shutdown of machines. In cylinder pressure developed, vibrations and noise emissions data provide a rich source of information about condition of engines.Monitoring of vibrations and noise emissions are novel non-intrusive methodologies for which positioning of various transducers are important issue. The presented work shows applicability of these diagnosis methodologies adopted in case of diesel engines. The effects of changing various fuel injection parameters was analyzed.Scope of using non-intrusive technique has been analyzed by changing locations of microphone.Novelty of this worklies in exploring signal processing methods for various locations around the engine test set up.Various frequency ranges of contributing noise and vibration sources were identified.Time-Frequency analysis showed the onset of various cyclic.Based on the identification of various frequency bands,it is possible to device suitable filters in order to extract more information. 展开更多

The general corrosion and local corrosion of Q235 steel were tested by acoustic emission (AE) detecting system under 6% FeCl3.6H2O solution to effectively detect the corrosion acoustic emission signal from complex background noise. The short-time fractal dimension and discrete fractional cosine transform methods are combined to reduce noise. The input SNR is 0-15 dB while corrosion acoustic emission signals being added with white noise, color noise and pink noise respectively. The results show that the output signal-to-noise ratio is improved by up to 8 dB compared with discrete cosine transform and discrete fractional cosine transform. The above-mentioned noise reduction method is of significance for the identification of corrosion induced acoustic emission signals and the evaluation of the metal remaining life. 展开更多
