The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical characteristics of implant-abutment interface design in a dental implant system, using nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) method. This finite element simulation study was applied on three commonly used commercial dental implant systems: model I, the reduced-diameter 3i implant system (West Palm Beach, FL, USA) with a hex and a 12-point double internal hexagonal connection; model II, the Semados implant system (Bego, Bremen, Germany) with combination of a conical (45° taper) and internal hexagonal connection; and model III, the Br,~nemark implant system (Nobel Biocare, Gothenburg, Sweden) with external hexagonal connection. In simulation, a force of 170 N with 45°oblique to the longitudinal axis of the implant was loaded to the top surface of the abutment. It has been found from the strength and stiffness analysis that the 3i implant system has the lowest maximum yon Mises stress, prirlcipal stress and displacement, while the Br^nemark implant system has the highest. It was concluded from our preliminary study using nonlinear FEA that the reduced-diameter 3i implant system with a hex and a 12-point double internal hexagonal connection had a better stress distribution, and produced a smaller displacement than the other two implant systems. 展开更多

There are clearances in mechanism because of manufacture and assembly error,which reduces operation life and working accuracy of mechanism and has a great impact on dynamical responses.At the moment,research in this area mainly focuses on single degree⁃of⁃freedom mechanism considering one clearance,while research of multi⁃DOF mechanism considering multi⁃clearance is less.With the purpose of studying the dynamical characteristics of complex multi⁃DOF mechanism with multi⁃clearances,a dynamic model was developed.The dynamic responses of 2⁃DOF mechanism with two clearances under different positions,values,and numbers of clearance were analyzed.The displacement,velocity,acceleration,collision force,and the axis trajectory at clearance were then given.In addition,there is a limited amount of literature on chaotic phenomena,which mainly focuses on the chaotic phenomena of end⁃effector of mechanism.But in this paper,the non⁃linear characteristics were analyzed by chaotic phenomenon of clearance joint,then chaotic phenomenon was identified by Poincarémappings and phase diagrams.Bifurcation diagrams were given.The results will offer a reliable technical support for the study of dynamical responses of planar mechanisms and the analysis of chaotic phenomena. 展开更多

Background: Non-linear signal analysis has proven to be a technique that is capable of revealing qualitative and quan- titative differentiations between different dynamical systems (biological or otherwise). In the present work it has been demonstrated that this capability reveals quantitative differences in the Magnetoencephalograms (MEG) received from patients with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy (IGE) and from healthy volunteers. Method: We present MEG record- ings of 10 epileptic patients with IGE and the corresponding ones from 10 healthy volunteers. A 122-channel SQUID biomagnetometer in an electromagnetically shielded room was used to record the MEG signals and the Grassber- ger-Procaccia method for the estimation of the correlation dimension was applied in the phase space reconstruction of the recorded signal from each patient. Results: The aforementioned analysis demonstrates the existence of spatially diffused low dimensionality in the MEG signals of patients with IGE. Conclusion: The obtained results provide support for the hypothesis that low dimensionality in MEG signals is linked to functional brain pathogeny. 展开更多

Tensile analyses were performed to simulate different axial and obliquous masticatory loads. The influence of the variations in the contouring conditions of the interfaces was analyzed to weigh the osseointegration with linear and non-linear cases, by means of a parametric design. The geometry selected to place the prostheses was a jaw section, considering the properties of the set of cortical and trabecular bones. The results show that for non-linear contour conditions, the stress presents smaller value distributions and signals a different place in the screw-implant interface as the factor of the greater weight in this study. The location indicated that von Mises stress concentrations are not exclusive to the contact regions studied, moving to an area that is not in direct contact with the non-linear contact interfaces. In addition, the direction of load with an angle of 15 degrees presented the highest values of von Mises stress.</span> </p> 展开更多

Voice conversion algorithm aims to provide high level of similarity to the target voice with an acceptable level of quality.The main object of this paper was to build a nonlinear relationship between the parameters for the acoustical features of source and target speaker using Non-Linear Canonical Correlation Analysis(NLCCA) based on jointed Gaussian mixture model.Speaker indi-viduality transformation was achieved mainly by altering vocal tract characteristics represented by Line Spectral Frequencies(LSF).To obtain the transformed speech which sounded more like the target voices,prosody modification is involved through residual prediction.Both objective and subjective evaluations were conducted.The experimental results demonstrated that our proposed algorithm was effective and outperformed the conventional conversion method utilized by the Minimum Mean Square Error(MMSE) estimation. 展开更多

Non-Linear Analysis of Masonry Structures Subjected to External Settlements

This article describes a methodology for the non-linear analysis of existing masonry structures subjected to external yielding constraints, with particular attention to the historical and cultural heritage constructions. It is well known, indeed, that most of the arch and wall damages are often due to settlement of abutments, in the former case, and to settlement of foundations, in the latter one. The ability to observe and correctly analyze the cracking failure pattern, visible on such structures, is the main “diagnostic tool” for identifying its origin: the modification of load conditions over time, foundation settlements and earthquakes. The objective of this work is to identify a numeric modelling of masonry structures (such as walls, arches, vaults, ruins) under any load condition and subjected to inelastic settlements impressed to some external constraints. The purpose of the numerical procedure is to interpret the behaviour of such structures in order to assess both the peak settlement value and their specific failure mode in correspondence to a geometry which is very often compromised. Therefore, this procedure allows one to estimate the degree of the structures’ vulnerability, in order to prevent any future damage, both local and global. The iterative algorithm proposed in this article, developed in a calculation software, processes the structure considering, not only the properties of constitutive material, non-homogeneous and anisotropic, but also the change of the structure’s shape during the settlements increase. In this way a non-linear analysis is performed both materically and geometrically. Through a direct comparison between numerical and experimental results, obtained by testing some simple structural models in a laboratory, it was ascertained, both from a qualitative and quantitative point of view, the correctness and the efficacy of the proposed procedure, which will be explained below. Therefore, this numerical procedure demonstrates to be a useful “diagnostic tool” by which, starting from the input of the masonry structure to be studied and simulating a presumable event, one can trace the source of the causes that have generated a certain failure, comparing the cracking pattern of real structure with that plotted by the software. 展开更多

The dynamic response of offshore platforms is more serious in hostile sea environment than in shallow sea. In this paper, a hybrid solution combined with analytical and numerical method is proposed to compute the stochastic response of fixed offshore platforms to random waves, considering wave-structure interaction and non-linear drag force. The simulation program includes two steps: the first step is the eigenanalysis aspects associated the structure and the second step is response estimation based on spectral equations. The eigenanalysis could be done through conventional finite element method conveniently and its natural frequency and mode shapes obtained. In the second part of the process, the solution of the offshore structural response is obtained by iteration of a series of coupled spectral equations. Considering the third-order term in the drag force, the evaluation of the three-fold convolution should be demanded for nonlinear stochastic response analysis. To demonstrate this method, a numerical analysis is carried out for both linear and non-linear platform motions. The final response spectra have the typical two peaks in agreement with reality, indicating that the hybrid method is effective and can be applied to offshore engineering. 展开更多

This paper establishes a non-linear finite element model (NFEM) of L4-L5 lumbar spinal segment with accurate three-dimensional solid ligaments and intervertebral disc. For the purpose, the intervertebral disc and surrounding ligaments are modeled with four-nodal three-dimensional tetrahedral elements with hyper-elastic material properties. Pure moment of 10 N·m without preload is applied to the upper vertebral body under the loading conditions of lateral bending, backward extension, torsion, and forward flexion, respectively. The simulate relationship curves between generalized forces and generalized displacement of the NFEM are compared with the in vitro experimental result curves to verify NFEM. The verified results show that: (1) The range of simulated motion is a good agreement with the in vitro experimental data; (2) The NFEM can more effectively reffect the actual mechanical properties than the FE model using cable and spring elements ligaments; (3) The NFEM can be used as the basis for further research on lumbar degenerative diseases. 展开更多

However, there are very few works on seismic hazard analysis of Guwahati soil considering the local site effects. The effect of large modifications in seismic waves that occur due to variation in soil properties near the surface of the earth is of great importance in geotechnical earthquake engineering. Seismic soil liquefaction, a soil seismic hazard, is evaluated in Guwahati city in terms of factor of safety against liquefaction along the soil profiles using ground response analysis. One dimensional ground response analysis has been conducted using equivalent linear and non linear method using the Deepsoil software. The input motion of 2011 Sikkim earthquake (Mw = 6.9) having bedrock PGA of 0.152 g at 30 m depth is considered. A comparative study has been made of the equivalent linear and non linear analysis in terms of surface PGA (g), maximum strain (%), maximum stress ratio and liquefaction potential using soil profiles of Guwahati city. It has been observed that stiffer soil layer results in similar PGA from both the analysis however non linear analysis generally gives a lesser surface PGA than by equivalent linear analysis. Non linear analysis generally gives a higher strain range and a lower maximum stress ratio as compared to the equivalent linear method. A slightly higher factor of safety is obtained using non linear analysis than using equivalent linear analysis. A soil database of 200 bore holes was used for the study. Spatial distribution of soil liquefaction potential is presented in the form of GIS based maps of factor of safety values. 展开更多

The model consists of two coupled, deterministic differential equations allowing for cell reproduction and death, and cell infection. The model is one of the conceptual mathematical models of tumor growth that treat a tumor as a dynamic society of interacting cells. In this paper, we obtain an approximate analytical expression of uninfected and infected cell population by solving the non-linear equations using Homotopy analysis method (HAM). Furthermore, the results are compared with the numerical simulation of the problem using Matlab program. The obtained results are valid for the whole solution domain. 展开更多

The objective of this work was to compare stress reduction during the induced vibration in the hollow gas turbine shafts by introducing different cut-outs. Round, square and elliptical cut-outs under different orientations were compared. It is observed that a square cutout at 45°?orientation has the least stress concentration. In some cases nonlinear calibration curves are obtained, but restricting the concentration range a linear model may be used to fit the data. Residual analysis has been performed in order to verify which models fit the data better, opting for a compromise decision given the apparent complexity of residuals plots. A right cone of a unit base and unit height has been selected to represent protein sequences on its surface. The twenty amino acids have been represented by 20 circles and all protein's residues have been represented by n lines on the cone's surface. All the spots which represent the protein's residues have been shown in the cone's top view. The spatial median of all the spots is used as a new descriptor of any protein sequence. This approach was applied on two short segments of protein of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The examination of the similarities/dissimilarities for the eight ND5 proteins and the six β-globin proteins illustrate the utility of our approach. A linear correlation and significance analysis have been provided to compare our results and the percentage sequence alignment identity. 展开更多

Merr.) adaptation to new environments has been hard to predict based on maturity group. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of 14 soybean genotypes, from the Soybean Breeding Program of the Federal University of Uberlandia, in their adaptive capacity and seed yield stability at 3 locations and 2 growing seasons. For the adaptability and stability analysis the Toler and Centroid methods were used;5 genotypic groups were identified in the first whereas 4 groups were identified in the latter. By the Toler method group A was composed by 4 genotypes, UFU-001, UFU-003, UFU-0010, and UFU-001. They showed a convex pattern of adaptability and stability. In contrast, the genotypes UFU-008 and UFU-0013 were classified in Group E with a concave pattern of adaptability and stability. Regarding results from the Centroid method, the Genotype UFU-002, with higher seed yield than average, was the only genotype in Ideotype VI with moderate adaptability to favorable environments. In contrast, 10 genotypes were included in the Ideotype V, of medium general adaptability. The genotypes UFU-001, UFU-002, UFU-006, UFU-0010, and UFU-0011 were recommended for use in the Brazilian Cerrado growing region. These genotypes had high seed yield potential in high quality environments. 展开更多

In Europe, computation of displacement demand for seismic assessment of existing buildings is essentially based on a simplified formulation of the N2 method as prescribed by Eurocode 8(EC8). However, a lack of accuracy of the N2 method in certain conditions has been pointed out by several studies. This paper addresses the assessment of effectiveness of the N2 method in seismic displacement demand determination in non-linear domain. The objective of this work is to investigate the accuracy of the N2 method through comparison with displacement demands computed using non-linear timehistory analysis(NLTHA). Results show that the original N2 method may lead to overestimation or underestimation of displacement demand predictions. This may affect results of mechanical model-based assessment of seismic vulnerability at an urban scale. Hence, the second part of this paper addresses an improvement of the N2 method formula by empirical evaluation of NLTHA results based on EC8 ground-classes. This task is formulated as a mathematical programming problem in which coefficients are obtained by minimizing the overall discrepancy between NLTHA and modified formula results. Various settings of the mathematical programming problem have been solved using a global optimization metaheuristic. An extensive comparison between the original N2 method formulation and optimized formulae highlights benefits of the strategy. 展开更多

This paper examines a computer program developed to analyze the vibration of rotating machineries based on theories of vibration and multibody dynamics (MBD). Bending vibration problems of rotating machineries have generally been categorized as either linear or nonlinear. Linear problems can be formulated by standard methods and nonlinear problems can be formulated by MBD methods. In our study, nonlinear problems are treated by the use of a general-purpose computer program, RecurDyn (RD). In the program we developed, rotor bending vibration analysis (RotB) structural properties such as shafts, rotating rotary disks, unbalanced masses and foundation structures are modeled as multibody elements. Also, nonlinearities such as contact, non-symmetrical shaft effects, bearing characteristics, nonlinear restoring and damping characteristics in the bearings are taken into account. Many difficult engineering problems cannot be solved by the conventional optimization techniques in practice. Direct searches that need no recourse to explicit derivatives are revived and become popular since the new century. In order to get a deep insight into this field, some notes on the direct searches for non-smooth optimization problems are made. The global convergence vs. local convergence and their influences on expected solutions for simulation-based stochastic optimization are pointed out. The sufficient and simple decrease criteria for step acceptance are analyzed, and why simple decrease is enough for globalization in direct searches is identified. The reason to introduce the positive spanning set and its usage in direct searches is explained. Other topics such as the generalization of direct searches to bound, linear and non-linear constraints are also briefly discussed. 展开更多
