We evaluate and compare performance of an optimization-based control algorithm(OCA) with that of a heuristic rules-based algorithm(HRA). In the OCA, the average speed of each vehicle is maximized. In the HRA, virtual vehicle and restriction of the command acceleration caused by the virtual vehicle are introduced. It is found that(i) capacity under the HRA(denoted as C_(H)) is smaller than capacity under the OCA;(ii) the travel delay is always smaller under the OCA, but driving is always much more comfortable under the HRA;(iii) when the inflow rate is smaller than C_(H), the HRA outperforms the OCA with respect to the fuel consumption and the monetary cost;(iv) when the inflow rate is larger than C_(H), the HRA initially performs better with respect to the fuel consumption and the monetary cost, but the OCA would become better after certain time. The spatiotemporal pattern and speed profile of traffic flow are presented, which explains the reason underlying the different performance. The study is expected to help for better understanding of the two different types of algorithm.展开更多

The proposed algorithm is computationally efficient and offers a real-time prediction since it invokes the connected vehicle data just before the prediction period. Moreover, it can predict the traffic flow for various pene-tration rates of connected vehicles (the ratio of the number of connected vehicles to the total number of vehicles). At first, the Kalman filter equations are calibrated using data derived from Vissim traffic simulator for different penetra-tion rates, different fluctuating arrival rates of vehicles and various signal settings. Then the filter is evaluated for a variety of traffic scenarios generated in Vissim simulator. Results indicate that the inlet started and unstarted operations have remarkable effects on the flow pattern of the full flow path. When the inlet operates in a started mode, the transverse pressure gradient generated by the forebody alters the air captured characteristics and the entering flow quality of the inlet. Furthermore, the expansion process of the nozzle jet flow is obviously affected by the external flow field around the afterbody with the cross section shape transiting from a near rectangle at the exit of the nozzle to a near triangle at the tail of the vehicle. When the inlet operates in an unstarted mode, the aerodynamic instability can be observed in the full flow path of the vehicle. Due to the oscillation of the external compressed shock wave and nozzle jet flow, the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicle vary periodically with the lift-drag ratio changing from 0.25 to 2.09. Currently, simulation is commonly used to evaluate operational performance of CFIs. However, this approach requires significant on-site data collection and is highly dependent on the analyst’s ability to correctly model the intersection and driver behavior. Recently, connected vehicle (CV) trajectory data has become widely available and presents opportunities for the direct measurement of traffic signal performance measures. This study utilizes CV trajectory data to analyze the performance of a CFI located in West Valley City, UT. Over 4500 trajectories and 105,000 GPS points are analyzed from August 2021 weekday data. Trajectories are linear-referenced to generate Purdue Probe Diagrams (PPDs) and extended PPDs to estimate split failures (SF), arrivals on green (AOG), traditional Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) level of service (LOS), and the distribution of stops. The estimated operational performance showed effective progression during the PM peak period at all the critical internal storage areas with AOG levels at exit traffic signals between 83% and 100%. In contrast, all external approaches with longer queue storage areas had AOG values ranging from 2% to 81% during the same time period. The presented analytical techniques and summary graphics provide practitioners with tools to evaluate the performance of any CFI where CV trajectories are available without the need for on-site data collection.展开更多

Experiments were done using these front profiles in the Northwestern Polytechnical University high-speed water tunnel. The experiments indicated that the critical volume of gas required for supercavitation is affected by the axial distribution of the front-end's slope. The experimental data showed critical gas flow rates required for the three designs were less than rood-l, with the greatest decrease 24%. The experimental results also showed the supercavitation generation speeds of the models were faster than mod-1 by up to 32.4%. This verifies that the front profile of a supercaviting vehicle effects supercavity generation speed and critical gas flow rates. The smaller the changes in axial distribution of pressure, the higher the supercavity generation speed. The smaller the changes in curvature distribution of axial, the smaller the critical gas flow rates.展开更多

The total resistances for different Froude numbers are considered experimentally. The towing tank is equipped with a trolley that can operate in through 0.05-6 m/s speed with ±0.02 m/s accuracy. Furthermore, the study is done on hydrodynamic coefficients i.e. total, residual and friction resistance coefficients, and the results are compared. Finally, the study on flow of wave fields around bows is done and wave filed around two bows are compared. The Froude number interval is between 0.099 and 0.349. Blockage fraction for the model is fixed to 0.005 3. The results showed that the residual resistance of the standard bow in 0.19 to 0.3 Froude number is more than the tango bow in surface motion which causes more total resistance for the submarine. Finally, details of wave generated by the bow are depicted and the effects of flow pattern on resistance drag are discussed.展开更多

A new car-following model for electric vehicle was proposed based on the existing car-following models. The impacts of the electric vehicle's charging electricity were studied from the numerical perspective. The numerical results show that the electric vehicle's charging electricity will destroy the stability of uniform flow and produce some prominent queues and these traffic phenomena are directly related to the initial headway, the distance between two adjacent charging stations and the number of charging stations. The above results can help traffic engineer to choose the position of charging station and the electric vehicle's driver to adjust his/her driving behavior in the traffic system with charging station.展开更多

The miniaturization level in PR China makes smaller MAV, in our opinion, not possible to implement. The NWPU20 is a 20-centimeter span, battery powered, fixed-wing aircraft with an off-the-shelf color video camera that can transmit live video back to the ground station. The on-board electronic subsystems are smallest and lightest among the commercial products, including an 8-gram wireless video camera, an 8-gram receiver, a 5-gram electronic speed controller (ESC), two 4.5-gram fully proportional radio frequency control servos, and the total mass of NWPU20 is less than 80 grams. An experimental model was fabricated and tested in the Low Turbulent Flow Wind Tunnel (LTFWT) at Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU) to research low Reynolds number flow characteristics of the NWPU20. The result of the wind tunnel test shows that stall angle of attack of NWPU20 can reach 30°, which is higher than that of the general aircrafts, and the maximum lift-to-drag ratio of NWPU20 can nearly reach 6 at the angle of attack of 10°, which can satisfy design requirements of the NWPU20. A small-sized propulsion/torque testing system was developed to measure and analyze the propulsion and torque performances of the motor-propeller combination used in the NWPU20. A center of gravity (c.g.) testing apparatus was developed and used to adjust the c.g. of the NWPU20 so that it has good longitudinal static stability and control. The NWPU20 prototype has undergone successfully flight tests many times; it flies at 32 kilometers per hour, with an endurance of 15 minutes, and a maximum communications range of 300 meters. With the color video camera, NWPU20 successfully transmits real-time video back to the ground station. The success of NWPU20 proves preliminarily that 20-centimeter span micro air vehicle is feasible and usable.展开更多

文摘This paper deals with the co-design problem of event-triggered communication scheduling and platooning control over vehicular ad-hoc networks(VANETs)subject to finite communication resource.First,a unified model is presented to describe the coordinated platoon behavior of leader-follower vehicles in the simultaneous presence of unknown external disturbances and an unknown leader control input.Under such a platoon model, the central aim is to achieve robust platoon formation tracking with desired inter-vehicle spacing and same velocities and accelerations guided by the leader, while attaining improved communication efficiency.Toward this aim,a novel bandwidth-aware dynamic event-triggered scheduling mechanism is developed. One salient feature of the scheduling mechanism is that the threshold parameter in the triggering law is dynamically adjusted over time based on both vehicular state variations and bandwidth status. Then,a sufficient condition for platoon control system stability and performance analysis as well as a co-design criterion of the admissible event-triggered platooning control law and the desired scheduling mechanism are derived. Finally, simulation results are provided to substantiate the effectiveness and merits of the proposed co-design approach for guaranteeing a trade-off between robust platooning control performance and communication efficiency.
文摘In this paper, towing tank experiments are conducted to study the behavior of flow on a model of the underwater vehicle with various shapes of bows, i.e. tango and standard bows in free surface motion tests. Finally, details of wave generated by the bow are depicted and the effects of flow pattern on resistance drag are discussed.

文摘The micro modeling for electric vehicle and its solution were investigated. The above results can help traffic engineer to choose the position of charging station and the electric vehicle's driver to adjust his/her driving behavior in the traffic system with charging station.
文摘An interval linear traffic planning model is developed for supporting vehicle emissions limited under uncertainty. The interval linear traffic planning model can address uncertainties of traffic system and vehicle emissions related to system costs and limitation of emission. The interval linear traffic planning model is applicable to complex traffic system. One virtual city as our study object was taken by using the interval linear traffic planning model. In this study, one virtual case and a scenario are provided for three planning periods. The results indicate that the interval linear traffic planning model can effectively reduce the vehicles emission and provide strategies for authorities to deal with problems of transportation system.
文摘This paper reports the design, construction, and operation of NWPU20 Micro Air Vehicle (MAV), which is the smallest that has, up to now, been developed in PR China. The success of NWPU20 proves preliminarily that 20-centimeter span micro air vehicle is feasible and usable.

文摘Connected and automated vehicles(CAVs)are expected to reshape traffic flow dynamics and present new challenges and opportunities for traffic flow modeling. While numerous studies have proposed optimal modeling and control strategies for CAVs with various objectives(e.g.,traffic efficiency and safety),there are uncertainties about the flow dynamics of CAVs in real-world traffic. The uncertainties are especially amplified for mixed traffic flows, consisting of CAVs and human-driven vehicles, where the implications can be significant from the continuum-modeling perspective, which aims to capture macroscopic traffic flow dynamics based on hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations. This paper aims to highlight and discuss some essential problems in continuum modeling of real-world freeway traffic flows in the era of CAVs.We first provide a select review of some existing continuum models for conventional human-driven traffic as well as the recent attempts for incorporating CAVs into the continuum-modeling framework.Wherever applicable,we provide new insights about the properties of existing models and revisit their implications for traffic flows of CAVs using recent empirical observations with CAVs and the previous discussions and debates in the literature. The paper then discusses some major problems inherent to continuum modeling of real-world(mixed)CAV traffic flows modeling by distinguishing between two major research directions:(a)modeling for explaining purposes, where making reproducible inferences about the physical aspects of macroscopic properties is of the primary interest, and(b)modeling for practical purposes,in which the focus is on the reliable predictions for operation and control. The paper proposes some potential solutions in each research direction and recommends some future research topics.

文摘Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV’s) are considered as advanced classes of vehicles, capable of performing pre-established missions without physical communication with the ground or human assistance. The research and development of this type of vehicles have been motivated, due to its excellent characteristics, ideal to the military, scientific and industrial sectors. Thus, the objective of this paper is to study fluid flow behavior past over AUV’s, without and with control surfaces (rudders), by Computational Fluid-Dynamics (CFD), aiming to obtain information about the impact of the operating depth and control surfaces on the vehicle's hydrodynamics, in order to help researchers and designers of this class of vehicles. Results of the drag coefficient, pressure, velocity and streamlines distribution around the vehicles are presented and analyzed.

文摘Automatic solution of vehicle operation adjustment is the important content in realizing vehicle traffic command automation on Internet of Things platform. Based on both the organization realization of Internet of Things platform and the merging vehicle operation adjustment into the Flow-Shop scheduling problem in manufacturing systems, this paper has constructed the optimization model with a two-lane vehicle operation adjustment. With respect to the large model solution space and complex constraints,a better solution algorithm is proposed based on ant colony algorithm for optimal quick solution. The simulation results show that the algorithm is feasible and the approximate optimal solution can be quickly obtained.
