The ALE kinemat ical description is introduced to move the computational mesh independently of f luid motion, and the container fixed noninertial coordinate system is employed to establish the governing equations so that the mesh is needed to be updated in this coordinate system only. This leads to a very simple mesh moving algorithm which makes it easy to trace the motion of the moving boundaries and the free su rface without producing undesirable distortion of the computational mesh. The fi nite element method and finite difference method are used spacewise and timewise , respectively. A numerical example involving either forced horizontal oscillati on or forced pitching oscillation of the fluid filled container is presented to illustrate the effectiveness and the robustness of the method. In additi on, this work can be extended for the fluid structure interaction problems.展开更多

Based on this, the analytical solution of nonlinear liquid sloshing in pitching tank could be investigated. Then the velocity potential function was expanded in series by wave height function at the free surface so that the nonlinear equations with kinematics and dynamics free surface boundary conditions were derived. Finally, these nonlinear equations were investigated analytically by the multiple scales method. The result indicates that the system's amplitude-frequency response changes from ‘soft-spring’ to ‘hard-spring’ in the planar motion with the decreasing of the Bond number, while it changes from ‘hard-spring’ to ‘soft-spring’ in the rotary motion.展开更多

(2000) is applied to solve liquid nonlinear free sloshing in right circular cylindrical tank for the first time. After selecting the leading modes and fixing the order of magnitudes based on the Narimanov-Moiseev third order asymptotic hypothesis, the general infinite dimensional modal system is reduced to a five dimensional asymptotic modal system (the system of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations coupling the generalized time dependent coordinates of free surface wave elevation). The numerical integrations of this modal system discover most important nonlinear phenomena, which agree well with both pervious analytic theories and experimental observations. The results indicate that the multidimensional modal method is a very good tool for solving liquid nonlinear sloshing dynamics and will be developed to investigate more complex sloshing problem in our following work.展开更多

Liquid sloshing in a rectangular container Subjected to a horizontal excitation is simulated by the finite element method. Comparisons between the two theories are made based on their numerical results. It is found that good agreement is obtained for the case of small amplitude oscillation and obvious differences occur for large amplitude excitation. Even though, the second order solution can still exhibit typical nonlinear features of nonlinear wave and can be used instead of the fully nonlinear theory.展开更多

The boundaries between stable motion and unstable motion depend on the radius of the tank, the liquid height, the gravitational intension, the surface tensor and the sloshing damping. In this article, the differential equations of nonlinear sloshing are built first. And by variational principle, the Lagrange function of liquid pressure is constructed in volume intergration form. Then the velocity potential function is expanded in series by wave height function at the free surface. To describe the interactions between the fuel slosh dynamics and the spacecraft attitude dynamics, a novel nonlinear dynamic model for three-axis liquid-filled spacecraft is presented, and in this paper, the multi-body dynamics method is utilized. In this model, the fuel slosh is represented by the motions of an equivalent sphere pendulum, and the fuel slosh is underactuated. The proposed dynamics model meets the demand of attitude controller design of liquid-filled spacecraft. Then, a nonlinear proportional-plus-derivative (PD) type controller is designed for the proposed model based on the Lyapunov direct approach. This controller can suppress the fuel slosh and stabilize the attitude of the liquid-filled spacecraft. Numerical simulations are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed nonlinear dynamic model and the designed underactuated controller when compared with the conventional control scheme.展开更多

The numerical wave is generated from the inflow boundary, where the surface elevation and/or velocity are specified by use of the analytical solution or the laboratory data. The Sommerfeld/Orlanski radiation condition in conjunction with an artificial damping zone is applied to reduce wave reflection from the outflow boundary. The whole numerical solution procedures are split into three steps, i.e., advection, diffusion and propagation, and a new method, the Lagrange-Euler Method, instead of the MAC or VOF method, is introduced to solve the free surface elevation at the new time step. Several typical wave cases, including solitary waves, regular waves and irregular waves, are simulated in the wave tank. The robustness and accuracy of the NWT are verified by the good agreement between the numerical results and the linear or nonlinear analytical solutions. This research will be further developed by study of wave-wave, wave-current, wave-structure or wave-jet interaction in the future.展开更多
