Particularly, liquid hydrogen is used in the cooling process of the aeroplane. Further, liquid nitrogen can find applications in cooling equipment or electronic devices, i.e., high temperature superconducting(HTS) cables. So, herein, we have analysed the entropy generation(EG), nonlinear thermal radiation and unsteady(time-dependent) nature of the flow on quadratic combined convective flow over a permeable slender cylinder with diffusions of liquid hydrogen and nitrogen. The governing equations for flow and heat transfer characteristics are expressed in terms of nonlinear coupled partial differential equations. The solutions of these equations are attempted numerically by employing the quasilinearization technique with the implicit finite difference approximation. It is found that EG is minimum for double diffusion(liquid hydrogen and heat diffusion)than triple diffusion(diffusion of liquid hydrogen, nitrogen and heat). The enhancing values of the radiation parameter R_(d) and temperature ratio θ_(w) augment the fluid temperature for steady and unsteady cases as well as the local Nusselt number. Because, the fluid absorbs the heat energy released due to radiation, and in turn releases the heat energy from the cylinder to the surrounding surface.展开更多

Firstly, the physical model of tunnel geometry is established. Secondly, the suitable control equations and boundary conditions are selected to describe the diffusion distribution of pollutants in the tunnel. At the same time, the reliability of the model is verified according to the measured data, and the distribution law of CO concentration in the tunnel is observed through the simulation results. The tunnel is unorganized at the entrance of the tunnel. In the simulation results, the CO concentration at the entrance of the tunnel is far more than the CO unorganized emission limit in Beijing. The CO emission of the tunnel should be purified to prevent pollution of the urban environment.展开更多

Differential equations are essential for modeling dynamic systems in various disciplines, including biological processes, heat transfer, and control systems. This study addresses first, second, and third-order nonlinear differential equations using Mathematica for data generation and graphing. The ADM, developed by George Adomian, uses Adomian polynomials to handle nonlinear terms, which can be computationally intensive. In contrast, VIM, developed by He, directly iterates the correction functional, providing a more straightforward and efficient approach. This study highlights VIM’s rapid convergence and effectiveness of VIM, particularly for nonlinear problems, where it simplifies calculations and offers direct solutions without polynomial derivation. The results demonstrate VIM’s superior efficiency and rapid convergence of VIM compared with ADM. The VIM’s minimal computational requirements make it practical for real-time applications and complex system modeling. Our findings align with those of previous research, confirming VIM’s efficiency of VIM in various engineering applications. This study emphasizes the importance of selecting appropriate methods based on specific problem requirements. While ADM is valuable for certain nonlinearities, VIM’s approach is ideal for many engineering scenarios. Future research should explore broader applications and hybrid methods to enhance the solution’s accuracy and efficiency. This comprehensive comparison provides valuable guidance for selecting effective numerical methods for differential equations in engineering.展开更多

These weak areas have poor resistance to chloride ion erosion, which affects the service life of RLA-SCC in the marine environment. A three-dimensional multi-phase mesoscopic numerical model of RLA-SCC was established to simulate the chloride ions transportation in concrete. Experiments of RLA-SCC immersing in chloride solution were carried out to verify the simulation results. The effects of recycled large aggregate (RLA) content and RLA particle size on the service life of concrete were explored. The results indicate that the mesoscopic numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. At the same depth, the closer to the surface of the RLA, the greater the chloride ion concentration. The service life of RLA-SCC in marine environment decreases with the increase of RLA content. Compared with the service life of 20% content, the service life of 25% and 30% content decreased by 20% and 42% respectively. Increasing the particle size of RLA can effectively improve the service life of RLA-SCC in chloride environment. Compared with the service life of 50 mm particle size, the service life of 70 mm and 90 mm increased by 61% and 163%, respectively. .展开更多

Several twin tunnels are being planned for transportation purposes which will require good understanding for prediction of tunnel deformation and surface settlement during the engineering life of the structure. The deformational behaviour, design of sequential excavation and support of any jointed rock mass are challenging during underground construction. We have raised several commonly assumed issues while performing stability analysis of underground opening at shallow depth. For this purpose, Kainchi-mod Nerchowck twin tunnels(Himachal Pradesh, India) are taken for in-depth analysis of the stability of two asymmetric tunnels to address the influence of topography, twin tunnel dimension and geometry. The host rock encountered during excavation is composed mainly of moderately to highly jointed grey sandstone, maroon sandstone and siltstones. In contrast to equidimensional tunnels where the maximum subsidence is observed vertically above the centreline of the tunnel, the result from the present study shows shifting of the maximum subsidence away from the tunnel centreline. The maximum subsidence of 0.99 mm is observed at 4.54 m left to the escape tunnel centreline whereas the maximum subsidence of 3.14 mm is observed at 8.89 m right to the main tunnel centreline. This shifting clearly indicates the influence of undulating topography and inequidimensional noncircular tunnel.展开更多

This paper uses numerical modeling along with geophysical monitoring for assessing the Northwest dike stability during the restoration phase. The impact of waste rock deposition in the upstream TSF #1 is considered. The geophysical monitoring is based on electrical resistivity methods and was used to investigate the internal structure of the dike embankment in different deposition stages. The numerical simulations were performed with SLOPE/W code. The results show a factor of safety well above the minimum recommended value of 1.5. Geophysical monitoring revealed a vertical variation in the electrical resistivity across the dike, which indicates a multilayer structure of the embankment. Without any current in situ data, the geophysical monitoring helped estimating the nature of the materials used and the internal structure of the embankment. These interpretations were validated by geological observation of geotechnical log of the embankment. Based on this study, it is recommended that the water polishing pond be partly filled before waste rock is deposited in TSF #1. In addition, to ensure the stability of the dike, the piezometric head monitoring prior to and during waste rock deposition is recommended.展开更多

However, the interaction between the fluid and structure has not been sufficiently considered; this interaction can cause vibration and dynamic stress, which can affect the reliability. In this study, the dynamic stresses in a single-blade centrifugal pump impeller are analysed under different operating conditions; the two-way coupling method is used to calculate the fluid-structure interaction. Three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the SST k-o9 turbulence model for the fluid in the whole flow passage, while transient structure dynamic analysis is used with the finite element method for the structure side. The dynamic stresses in the rotor system are computed according to the fourth strength theory. The stress results show that the highest stress is near the loose bearing and that the equivalent stress increases with the flow rate because the dynamic stresses are closely related to the pressure load. The stress distributions on the blade pressure side, suction side, leading edge, and trailing edge are each analysed for different flow rates; the highest stress distribution is found on the pressure side. On the blade pressure side, a relatively large stress is found near the trailing edge and hub side. Based on these results, a stress distribution prediction method is proposed for centrifugal pumps, which considers the interaction between the fluid and structuxe. The method can be used to check the dynamic stress at different flow rates when optimising the pump design to increase the pump reliability.展开更多

Unlike in the traditional water turbines, pump-turbine operation along the S-shaped curve can lead to difficulties during load rejection with unusual increases in the water pressure, which leads to machine vibrations. This paper describes both model tests and numerical simulations. A reduced scale model of a low specific speed pump-turbine was used for the performance tests, with comparisons to computational fluid dynamics(CFD) results. Predictions using the detached eddy simulation(DES) turbulence model, which is a combined Reynolds averaged Naviers-Stokes(RANS) and large eddy simulation(LES) model, are compared with the two-equation turbulence mode results. The external characteristics as well as the internal flow are for various guide vane openings to understand the unsteady flow along the so called S characteristics of a pump-turbine. Comparison of the experimental data with the CFD results for various conditions and times shows that DES model gives better agreement with experimental data than the two-equation turbulence model. For low flow conditions, the centrifugal forces and the large incident angle create large vortices between the guide vanes and the runner inlet in the runner passage, which is the main factor leading to the S-shaped characteristics. The turbulence model used here gives more accurate simulations of the internal flow characteristics of the pump-turbine and a more detailed force analysis which shows the mechanisms controlling of the S characteristics.展开更多

文摘An analytical method for determining the stresses and deformations of landfills contained by retaining walls is proposed in this paper. In the proposedmethod, the sliding resisting normal and tangential stresses of the retaining wall and the stress field of the sliding body are obtained considering the differential stress equilibrium equations, boundary conditions, and macroscopic forces and moments applied to the system, assuming continuous stresses at the interface between the sliding body and the retaining wall. The solutions to determine stresses and deformations of landfills contained by retaining walls are obtained using the Duncan-Chang and Hooke constitutive models.A case study of a landfill in the Hubei Province in China is used to validate the proposed method. The theoretical stress results for a slope with a retaining wall are compared with FEMresults, and the proposed theoreticalmethod is found appropriate for calculating the stress field of a slope with a retaining wall.

文摘Ocean thermal energy conversion(OTEC)is a process of generating electricity by exploiting the temperature difference between warm surface seawater and cold deep seawater.Due to the high static and dynamic pressures that are caused by seawater circulation, the stiffened panel that constitutes a seawater tank may undergo a reduction in ultimate strength. The current paper investigates the design of stiffening systems for OTEC seawater tanks by examining the effects of stiffening parameters such as stiffener sizes and span-over-bay ratio for the applied combined loadings of lateral and transverse pressure by fluid motion and axial compression due to global bending moment. The ultimate strength calculation was conducted by using the non-linear finite element method via the commercial software known as ABAQUS.The stress and deformation distribution due to pressure loads was computed in the first step and then brought to the second step,in which the axial compression was applied. The effects of pressure on the ultimate strength of the stiffener were investigated for representative stiffened panels, and the significance of the stiffener parameters was assessed by using the sensitivity analysis method. As a result, the ultimate strength was reduced by approximately 1.5%for the span-over-bay ratio of 3 and by 7%for the span-over-bay ratio of 6.
文摘In this paper, the concentration distribution of CO emitted by motor vehicles in Beijing Yuntong Tunnel is simulated and analyzed based on Fluent numerical simulation software. The CO emission of the tunnel should be purified to prevent pollution of the urban environment.
文摘The design of counter-rotating turbine is one of new techniques to improve the thrust-weight ratio of jet propulsion engines.Numerical analysis of a low pressure(LP)counter-rotating turbine rotor blade is presented by using ANSYS/CFX software.Interaction of aerodynamics and solid mechanics coupling in the computation is applied. In some rating of turbine, stress distribution and vibration characteristics of low pressure turbine(LPT)blade are computed. The wake aerodynamic forces and LPT blade vibration are transformed in frequency domain using fast Fourier transform(FFT)method. The results show that under wake aerodynamic force excitation, the first order modal vibration is more easily aroused and the higher order response cannot be ignored. Moreover, with different temperature fields, the vibration responses of blade are also different.
文摘Multimodal medical image fusion has attained immense popularity in recent years due to its robust technology for clinical diagnosis. It fuses multiple images into a single image to improve the quality of images by retaining significant information and aiding diagnostic practitioners in diagnosing and treating many diseases. However, recent image fusion techniques have encountered several challenges, including fusion artifacts, algorithm complexity, and high computing costs. To solve these problems, this study presents a novel medical image fusion strategy by combining the benefits of pixel significance with edge-preserving processing to achieve the best fusion performance.First, the method employs a cross-bilateral filter(CBF)that utilizes one image to determine the kernel and the other for filtering, and vice versa,by considering both geometric closeness and the gray-level similarities of neighboring pixels of the images without smoothing edges. The outputs of CBF are then subtracted from the original images to obtain detailed images. It further proposes to use edge-preserving processing that combines linear lowpass filtering with a non-linear technique that enables the selection of relevant regions in detailed images while maintaining structural properties. These regions are selected using morphologically processed linear filter residuals to identify the significant regions with high-amplitude edges and adequate size. The outputs of low-pass filtering are fused with meaningfully restored regions to reconstruct the original shape of the edges. In addition, weight computations are performed using these reconstructed images, and these weights are then fused with the original input images to produce a final fusion result by estimating the strength of horizontal and vertical details.Numerous standard quality evaluation metrics with complementary properties are used for comparison with existing,well-known algorithms objectively to validate the fusion results.Experimental results from the proposed research article exhibit superior performance compared to other competing techniques in the case of both qualitative and quantitative evaluation. In addition, the proposed method advocates less computational complexity and execution time while improving diagnostic computing accuracy.Nevertheless, due to the lower complexity of the fusion algorithm, the efficiency of fusion methods is high in practical applications. The results reveal that the proposed method exceeds the latest state-of-the-art methods in terms of providing detailed information, edge contour, and overall contrast.

文摘Thermal runaway(TR)is a critical issue hindering the large-scale application of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs).Understanding the thermal safety behavior of LIBs at the cell and module level under different state of charges(SOCs)has significant implications for reinforcing the thermal safety design of the lithium-ion battery module. This study first investigates the thermal safety boundary(TSB)correspondence at the cells and modules level under the guidance of a newly proposed concept, safe electric quantity boundary(SEQB).A reasonable thermal runaway propagation(TRP)judgment indicator, peak heat transfer power(PHTP),is proposed to predict whether TRP occurs. Moreover,a validated 3D model is used to quantitatively clarify the TSB at different SOCs from the perspective of PHTP,TR trigger temperature,SOC,and the full cycle life.Besides, three different TRP transfer modes are discovered. The interconversion relationship of three different TRP modes is investigated from the perspective of PHTP.This paper explores the TSB of LIBs under different SOCs at both cell and module levels for the first time, which has great significance in guiding the thermal safety design of battery systems.
文摘The response of tunnels subjected to seismic loading is a complex mechanism and depends not only on the seismic nature but also on tunnel structure and surrounding soil properties. The individual behavior of circular, rectangular, and sub-rectangular tunnels subjected to seismic loadings has already been studied in the literature. In the present research, two case scenarios of circular, rectangular tunnels and four sub-rectangular shaped tunnels, with similar cross-section areas, were adopted to perform a comprehensive numerical investigation. The purpose of the study was to determine the mechanical behavior of tunnels of different shapes, depending upon seismic conditions.Analyses were performed by considering the influence of soil-lining interaction, soil parameters, and lining thickness,as well as lining rigidity.Computations were performed for no-slip and full-slip conditions. The results indicate that the tunnel shape design is of great importance when regarding the mechanical behavior of the surrounding soil. This concerns no-slip as well as full-slip soil-lining interaction, especially when the lining is subjected to seismic loading. Moreover,it is shown that changes in incremental bending moments for circular, rectangular and sub-rectangular tunnels that depend upon the soil-lining interaction conditions differ significantly.
文摘This study compares the Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM) and the Variational Iteration Method (VIM) for solving nonlinear differential equations in engineering. This comprehensive comparison provides valuable guidance for selecting effective numerical methods for differential equations in engineering.
文摘Recycled large aggregate self-compacting concrete (RLA-SCC) within multiple weak areas. Compared with the service life of 50 mm particle size, the service life of 70 mm and 90 mm increased by 61% and 163%, respectively. .

文摘A dry-gas seal system is a non-contact seal technology that is widely used in different industrial applications.Spiral-groove dry-gas seal utilizes fluid dynamic pressure effects to realize the seal and lubrication processes, while forming a high pressure gas film between two sealing faces due to the deceleration of the gas pumped in or out. There is little research into the effects and the influence on seal performance,if the grooves and the gas film are at the micro-scale.This paper investigates the micro-scale effects on spiral-groove dry-gas seal performance in a numerical solution of a corrected Reynolds equation. The Reynolds equation is discretized by means of the finite difference method with the second order scheme and solved by the successive-over-relaxation(SOR) iterative method. The Knudsen number of the flow in the sealing gas film is changed from 0.005 to 0.120 with a variation of film depth and sealing pressure. The numerical results show that the average pressure in the gas film and the sealed gas leakage increase due to micro-scale effects. The open force is enlarged, while the gas film stiffness is significantly decreased due to micro-scale effects. The friction torque and power consumption remain constant, even in low sealing pressure and spin speed conditions. In this paper, the seal performance at different rotor face spin speeds is also described. The proposed research clarifies the micro-scale effects in a spiral-groove dry-gas seal and their influence on seal performance, which is expected to be useful for the improvement of the design of dry-gas seal systems operating in the slip flow regime.

文摘Tunnelling related hazards are very common in the Himalayan terrain and a number of such instances have been reported. This shifting clearly indicates the influence of undulating topography and inequidimensional noncircular tunnel.

文摘The Westwood Mine aims to reuse the tailings storage facility #1(TSF #1) for solid waste storage, but, downstream of the Northwest dike is considered critical in terms of stability. In addition, to ensure the stability of the dike, the piezometric head monitoring prior to and during waste rock deposition is recommended.

文摘Current research on the operational reliability of centrifugal pumps has mainly focused on hydrodynamic instability. The method can be used to check the dynamic stress at different flow rates when optimising the pump design to increase the pump reliability.

文摘The venturi meter has an advantage in its use, because it can measure flow without being much affected by the type of the measured fluid or flow conditions.Hence,it has excellent versatility and is being widely applied in many industries. The flow of a liquid containing air is a representative example of a multiphase flow and exhibits complex flow characteristics. In particular, the greater the gas volume fraction(GVF),the more inhomogeneous the flow becomes. As a result, using a venturi meter to measure the rate of a flow that has a high GVF generates an error. In this study, the cause of the error occurred in measuring the flow rate for the multiphase flow when using the venturi meter for analysis by CFD.To ensure the reliability of this study, the accuracy of the multiphase flow models for numerical analysis was verified through comparison between the calculated results of numerical analysis and the experimental data.As a result, the Grace model, which is a multiphase flow model established by an experiment with water and air,was confirmed to have the highest reliability. Finally, the characteristics of the internal flow Held about the multiphase flow analysis result generated by applying the Grace model were analyzed to find the cause of the uncertainty occurring when measuring the flow rate of the multiphase flow using the venturi meter.A phase separation phenomenon occurred due to a density difference of water and air inside the venturi, and flow inhomogeneity happened according to the flow velocity difference of each phase. It was confirmed that this flow inhomogeneity increased as the GVF increased due to the uncertainty of the flow measurement.

文摘This paper describes shaking table tests of a 1:12 scale model of a special concentrically braced steel frame with pinned connections, which was fabricated according to a one-bay braced frame selected from a typical main factory building of a large thermal power plant. In order to investigate the seismic performance of this type of structure, several ground motion accelerations with different levels for seismic intensity Ⅷ, based on the Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings, were selected to excite the model. The results show that the design methods of the members and the connections are adequate and that the structural system will perform well in regions of high seismicity. In addition to the tests, numerical simulations were also conducted and the results showed good agreement with the test results. Thus, the numerical model is shown to be accurate and the beam element can be used to model this structural system.

文摘Current research on pump-turbine units is focused on the unstable operation at off-design conditions, with the characteristic curves in generating mode being S-shaped. The turbulence model used here gives more accurate simulations of the internal flow characteristics of the pump-turbine and a more detailed force analysis which shows the mechanisms controlling of the S characteristics.
