Beyond 5G Networks: Integration of Communication, Computing, Caching, and Control

In recent years,the exponential proliferation of smart devices with their intelligent applications poses severe challenges on conventional cellular networks.Such challenges can be potentially overcome by integrating communication,computing,caching,and control(i4C)technologies.In this survey,we first give a snapshot of different aspects of the i4C,comprising background,motivation,leading technological enablers,potential applications,and use cases.Next,we describe different models of communication,computing,caching,and control(4C)to lay the foundation of the integration approach.We review current stateof-the-art research efforts related to the i4C,focusing on recent trends of both conventional and artificial intelligence(AI)-based integration approaches.We also highlight the need for intelligence in resources integration.Then,we discuss the integration of sensing and communication(ISAC)and classify the integration approaches into various classes.Finally,we propose open challenges and present future research directions for beyond 5G networks,such as 6G.

A Sri Lankan Development Communication Model： Use of Traditional Forms of Communication

This paper explores the potentials of traditional forms of communication in rural development communication. Experimenting a local development communication model that can be used at the grass-root level communication at the community development programs in Sri Lanka is the research objective. This study is a participatory research. Live participatory observation, impact analysis using a questionnaire and direct interview tools were used to analyze the impact of the creative model. This research study was experimented at Rasnayakapura divisional secretariat, Sri Lanka from 2004 to 2005. Results suggest that the traditional forms of communication can be utilized as a useful instrument in the rural community programs more than the dominant use of mass media and conventional use of small group communication. Forms of traditional communication are rich in communication because of their closeness to rural life, credibility, Utilization of familiar signs ＆ symbols, Participation of the same community, collective presentation, Utilization of past experiences, plot and the stories from their own life and psychological understanding （attraction, attention, rationality）. Communicating a message through entertainment was the practice of this model. Finally impact analysis confirmed the success of the model.

Chinese EFL Learners' Public Speaking Skills: An Investigation of Impromptu Speeches at the “FLTRP Cup” English Speaking Contest in the Light of Communication Models

The current study applied classic communication models to investigating 34 laureate impromptu speeches at the 2010 and 2011 ＂FLTRP （Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press） Cup＂ English Speaking Contest, one of the most influential of its kind in China, to identify the features of public speaking skills of Advanced Chinese EFL learners. The speech scripts and video excerpts from the subsequent manuscript collection with the CD-Rom published by FLTRP were studied. Lucas＇ framework of speech communication process was borrowed to bridge elements of the communication models and speech delivery process. Three key aspects of the speakers＇ encoding endeavors were under close examination： the verbal preferences, the non-verbal preferences, and the topic selection for exemplification. It was found that successful speakers demonstrated a clear and strong audience orientation. They chose more first person pronouns, fewer abstract words, a controlled number of dependent clauses, clear transition words, and limited figures of speech. They used very few verbal fillers, slips of tongue, a moderate speech rate and varied tone inflections. The speakers also showed distinctive features in gestures, eye contact and facial expressions. They employed anecdotes which shared a common field of experience. Pedagogical implications on the teaching of public speaking were discussed.

The Effectiveness of Internal Communication in Media Organization

A well-organized system of internal communication is vital in any organization open to improvement and change, pursuing better management of its resources and caring forgood work atmosphere. Internal communication is primarily to provide efficient, mutual flow of information between employees and management staff at all levels in each area of the organization. In order to present internal communication tools and evaluate their effectiveness a survey study was conducted among the employees of the listed media company Cyfrowy Polsat, one of the two leading private TV groups in Poland. The study involved 136 employees （17% of total employment）. The majority of respondents were male （85%）. All the respondents were 23 to 47 years of age. Almost half were below 24 years of age and 38% represented the age group 25-34 years of age. The majority of respondents declared higher education with master degree and working time exceeding three years. The survey showed that the dominant form of communication is message distribution via electronic channels which confirmed the research assumption that there was a dehumanization of contacts and indirect communication dominated over direct contact. Limited direct contact was also recognized as the major cause of conflicts and disputes. The study was based on the analysis of literature and source materials （reports, statistics, newsletters, and legal acts）. Additionally, the paper provides the presentation of Cyfrowy Polsat＇s position in the Polish media market as well as the strategies and objectives of the company.

An Interactive Model for Analyzing the Development of the Communication Discipline： Israel as a Case Study

Our paper presents an interactive four-dimensional model for studying the long- and short-term development of the communication discipline with Israel serving as a case study： institutional-contextual, institutional-in-field, intellectual-contextual, and intellectual-in-field. Our empirical analysis utilized personal interviews, archive documents, and statistical data. Four main processes were discerned： transition from integration to alienation between institutions of higher learning and the larger political and ideological context; a shift from Hebrew University Institute of Communication＇s institutional monopoly to a multiplicity of increasingly competitive communication schools/departments; transition from intellectual hegemony to limited intellectual diversity; and gradually improving status for the communication field among social science disciplines. Our case-study analysis validated the interactive relationship among the model＇s conceptual dimensions, calling for future cross-national comparisons.

Structural knowledge-driven meta-learning for task offloading in vehicular networks with integrated communications,sensing and computing

Task offloading is a potential solution to satisfy the strict requirements of computation-intensive and latency-sensitive vehicular applications due to the limited onboard computing resources.However,the overwhelming upload traffic may lead to unacceptable uploading time.To tackle this issue,for tasks taking environmental data as input,the data perceived by roadside units(RSU)equipped with several sensors can be directly exploited for computation,resulting in a novel task offloading paradigm with integrated communications,sensing and computing(I-CSC).With this paradigm,vehicles can select to upload their sensed data to RSUs or transmit computing instructions to RSUs during the offloading.By optimizing the computation mode and network resources,in this paper,we investigate an I-CSC-based task offloading problem to reduce the cost caused by resource consumption while guaranteeing the latency of each task.Although this nonconvex problem can be handled by the alternating minimization(AM)algorithm that alternatively minimizes the divided four sub-problems,it leads to high computational complexity and local optimal solution.To tackle this challenge,we propose a creative structural knowledge-driven meta-learning(SKDML)method,involving both the model-based AM algorithm and neural networks.Specifically,borrowing the iterative structure of the AM algorithm,also referred to as structural knowledge,the proposed SKDML adopts long short-term memory(LSTM)networkbased meta-learning to learn an adaptive optimizer for updating variables in each sub-problem,instead of the handcrafted counterpart in the AM algorithm.Furthermore,to pull out the solution from the local optimum,our proposed SKDML updates parameters in LSTM with the global loss function.Simulation results demonstrate that our method outperforms both the AM algorithm and the meta-learning without structural knowledge in terms of both the online processing time and the network performance.

Atypical Interpersonal Communication: Looking for and through a Different Lens

While studying communication,researchers and practitioners may use different theoretical approaches or models representative of the process.Dependent on the definition of communication and the use of a linear,interactional or transactional model of communication,the philosophical inclination will change,as well as the questions,hypothesis,and explanations formulated by the professional.Communication takes place in diverse contexts;this text focuses on interpersonal communication settings.Interpersonal communication may become atypical when one of the parties in the exchange communicates mainly through pre-verbal,unconventional and,sometimes,peculiar behaviours.Atypical communication is common in case of a disability or neurodevelopmental condition is present.In the present research,the Complex of Continuous Communication(CCC)is formulated as a theoretical model to analyse and explain atypical interpersonal communication as a co-creative process,emphasizing the way the communication relationship is developed within the dyads.The model is based on a thorough narrative review of relevant literature in the field to determine the components of the model,clarify the relationships among them,and explain how the communicative dynamic may grow in terms of diversity and complexity.The new model is articulated with a conscious influence from the transactional conceptualization and the dialogical perspective of communication,acknowledging the need for further experimentation in order to be validated.

Design and performance evaluation of a novel ranging signal based on an LEO satellite communication constellation

Driven by improvements in satellite internet and Low Earth Orbit(LEO)navigation augmenta-tion,the integration of communication and navigation has become increasingly common,and further improving navigation capabilities based on communication constellations has become a significant challenge.In the context of the existing Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM)communication systems,this paper proposes a new ranging signal design method based on an LEO satellite communication constellation.The LEO Satellite Communication Constellation Block-type Pilot(LSCC-BPR)signal is superimposed on the com-munication signal in a block-type form and occupies some of the subcarriers of the OFDM signal for transmission,thus ensuring the continuity of the ranging pilot signal in the time and frequency domains.Joint estimation in the time and frequency domains is performed to obtain the relevant distance value,and the ranging accuracy and communication resource utilization rate are determined.To characterize the ranging performance,the Root Mean Square Error(RMSE)is selected as an evaluation criterion.Simulations show that when the number of pilots is 2048 and the Signal-to-Noise Ratio(SNR)is 0 dB,the ranging accuracy can reach 0.8 m,and the pilot occupies only 50%of the communication subcarriers,thus improving the utilization of communication resources and meeting the public demand for communication and location services.

A two-stage short-term traffic flow prediction method based on AVL and AKNN techniques

Short-term traffic flow prediction is one of the essential issues in intelligent transportation systems(ITS). A new two-stage traffic flow prediction method named AKNN-AVL method is presented, which combines an advanced k-nearest neighbor(AKNN)method and balanced binary tree(AVL) data structure to improve the prediction accuracy. The AKNN method uses pattern recognition two times in the searching process, which considers the previous sequences of traffic flow to forecast the future traffic state. Clustering method and balanced binary tree technique are introduced to build case database to reduce the searching time. To illustrate the effects of these developments, the accuracies performance of AKNN-AVL method, k-nearest neighbor(KNN) method and the auto-regressive and moving average(ARMA) method are compared. These methods are calibrated and evaluated by the real-time data from a freeway traffic detector near North 3rd Ring Road in Beijing under both normal and incident traffic conditions.The comparisons show that the AKNN-AVL method with the optimal neighbor and pattern size outperforms both KNN method and ARMA method under both normal and incident traffic conditions. In addition, the combinations of clustering method and balanced binary tree technique to the prediction method can increase the searching speed and respond rapidly to case database fluctuations.
