Fractal theory offers a powerful tool for the precise description and quantification of the complex pore structures in reservoir rocks, crucial for understanding the storage and migration characteristics of media within these rocks.Faced with the challenge of calculating the three-dimensional fractal dimensions of rock porosity, this study proposes an innovative computational process that directly calculates the three-dimensional fractal dimensions from a geometric perspective.By employing a composite denoising approach that integrates Fourier transform(FT)and wavelet transform(WT),coupled with multimodal pore extraction techniques such as threshold segmentation,top-hat transformation, and membrane enhancement,we successfully crafted accurate digital rock models. The improved box-counting method was then applied to analyze the voxel data of these digital rocks, accurately calculating the fractal dimensions of the rock pore distribution.Further numerical simulations of permeability experiments were conducted to explore the physical correlations between the rock pore fractal dimensions, porosity, and absolute permeability. The results reveal that rocks with higher fractal dimensions exhibit more complex pore connectivity pathways and a wider, more uneven pore distribution, suggesting that the ideal rock samples should possess lower fractal dimensions and higher effective porosity rates to achieve optimal fluid transmission properties. The methodology and conclusions of this study provide new tools and insights for the quantitative analysis of complex pores in rocks and contribute to the exploration of the fractal transport properties of media within rocks. 展开更多

The Indo-Gangetic Plain(IGP)is one of the most seismically vulnerable areas due to its proximity to the Himalayas.Geographic information system(GIS)-based seismic characterization of the IGP was performed based on the degree of deformation and fractal dimension. The zone between the Main Boundary Thrust(MBT)and the Main Central Thrust(MCT)in the Himalayan Mountain Range(HMR)experienced large variations in earthquake magnitude, which were identified by Number-Size(NS)fractal modeling. The central IGP zone experienced only moderate to low mainshock levels.Fractal analysis of earthquake epicenters reveals a large scattering of earthquake epicenters in the HMR and central IGP zones.Similarly, the fault fractal analysis identifies the HMR,central IGP,and south-western IGP zones as having more faults.Overall, the seismicity of the study region is strong in the central IGP,south-western IGP,and HMR zones, moderate in the western and southern IGP,and low in the northern, eastern, and south-eastern IGP zones. 展开更多

Two of the main challenges in optimal control are solving problems with state-dependent running costs and developing efficient numerical solvers that are computationally tractable in high dimensions. In this paper,we provide analytical solutions to certain optimal control problems whose running cost depends on the state variable and with constraints on the control. We also provide Lax-Oleinik-type representation formulas for the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi partial differential equations with state-dependent Hamiltonians.Additionally,we present an efficient,grid-free numerical solver based on our representation formulas, which is shown to scale linearly with the state dimension, and thus,to overcome the curse of dimensionality.Using existing optimization methods and the min-plus technique,we extend our numerical solvers to address more general classes of convex and nonconvex initial costs. We demonstrate the capabilities of our numerical solvers using implementations on a central processing unit(CPU)and a field-programmable gate array(FPGA).In several cases, our FPGA implementation obtains over a 10 times speedup compared to the CPU,which demonstrates the promising performance boosts FPGAs can achieve. Our numerical results show that our solvers have the potential to serve as a building block for solving broader classes of high-dimensional optimal control problems in real-time. 展开更多

Electron systems in low dimensions are enriched with many superior properties for both fundamental research and technical developments. Wide tunability of electron density, high mobility of motion, and feasible controllability in microscales are the most prominent advantages that researchers strive for. Nevertheless, it is always difficult to fulfill all in one solid-state system. Two-dimensional electron systems(2DESs) floating above the superfluid helium surfaces are thought to meet these three requirements simultaneously, ensured by the atomic smoothness of surfaces and the electric neutrality of helium. Here we report our recent work in preparing, characterizing, and manipulating 2DESs on superfluid helium. We realized a tunability of electron density over one order of magnitude and tuned their transport properties by varying electron distribution and measurement frequency. The work we engage in is crucial for advancing research in many-body physics and for development of single-electron quantum devices rooted in these electron systems. 展开更多

Background The use of remote photoplethysmography(rPPG)to estimate blood volume pulse in a noncontact manner has been an active research topic in recent years.Existing methods are primarily based on a singlescale region of interest(ROI).However, some noise signals that are not easily separated in a single-scale space can be easily separated in a multi-scale space. Also, existing spatiotemporal networks mainly focus on local spatiotemporal information and do not emphasize temporal information, which is crucial in pulse extraction problems, resulting in insufficient spatiotemporal feature modelling. Methods Here,we propose a multi-scale facial video pulse extraction network based on separable spatiotemporal convolution(SSTC)and dimension separable attention(DSAT).First,to solve the problem of a single-scale ROI,we constructed a multi-scale feature space for initial signal separation.Second,SSTC and DSAT were designed for efficient spatiotemporal correlation modeling, which increased the information interaction between the long-span time and space dimensions;this placed more emphasis on temporal features. Results The signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)of the proposed network reached 9.58dB on the PURE dataset and 6.77dB on the UBFC-rPPG dataset, outperforming state-of-the-art algorithms. Conclusions The results showed that fusing multi-scale signals yielded better results than methods based on only single-scale signals. The proposed SSTC and dimension-separable attention mechanism will contribute to more accurate pulse signal extraction. 展开更多

Recent developments in in situ nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)spectroscopy under extreme conditions have led to the observation of a wide variety of physical phenomena that are not accessible with standard high-pressure experimental probes. However, inherent di-or quadrupolar line broadening in diamond anvil cell(DAC)-based NMR experiments often limits detailed investigation of local atomic structures, especially if different phases or local environments coexist. Here,we describe our progress in the development of high-resolutionNMRexperiments in DACs using one-and two-dimensional homonuclear decoupling experiments at pressures up to the megabar regime.Using this technique, spectral resolutions of the order of 1 ppm and below have been achieved, enabling high-pressure structural analysis.Several examples are presented that demonstrate the wide applicability of this method for extreme conditions research. 展开更多

This study investigates the impact of different water coupling coefficients on the blasting effect of red sandstone. The analysis is based on the theories of detonation wave and elastic wave, focusing on the variation in wall pressure of the blasting holes.Using DDNP explosive as the explosive load, blasting tests were conducted on red sandstone specimens with four different water coupling coefficients:1.20,1.33,1.50,and 2.00.The study examines the morphologies of the rock specimens after blasting under these different water coupling coefficients.Additionally, the fractal dimensions of the surface cracks resulting from the blasting were calculated to provide a quantitative evaluation of the extent of rock damage.CT scanning and 3D reconstruction were performed on the post-blasting specimens to visually depict the extent of damage and fractures within the rock.Additionally, the volume fractal dimension and damage degree of the post-blasting specimens are calculated. The findings are then combined with numerical simulation to facilitate auxiliary analysis. The results demonstrate that an increase in the water coupling coefficient leads to a reduction in the peak pressure on the hole wall and the crushing zone, enabling more of the explosion energy to be utilized for crack propagation following the explosion. The specimens exhibited distinct failure patterns, resulting in corresponding changes in fractal dimensions. The simulated pore wall pressure–time curve validated the derived theoretical results, whereas the stress cloud map and explosion energy-time curve demonstrated the buffering effect of the water medium. As the water coupling coefficient increases, the buffering effect of the water medium becomes increasingly prominent. 展开更多

Wireless Sensor Network(WSN)is considered to be one of the fundamental technologies employed in the Internet of things(IoT);hence, enabling diverse applications for carrying out real-time observations.Robot navigation in such networks was the main motivation for the introduction of the concept of landmarks.A robot can identify its own location by sending signals to obtain the distances between itself and the landmarks.Considering networks to be a type of graph, this concept was redefined as metric dimension of a graph which is the minimum number of nodes needed to identify all the nodes of the graph. This idea was extended to the concept of edge metric dimension of a graph G,which is the minimum number of nodes needed in a graph to uniquely identify each edge of the network.Regular plane networks can be easily constructed by repeating regular polygons. This design is of extreme importance as it yields high overall performance;hence,it can be used in various networking and IoT domains. The honeycomb and the hexagonal networks are two such popular mesh-derived parallel networks. In this paper,it is proved that the minimum landmarks required for the honeycomb network HC(n),and the hexagonal network HX(n)are 3 and 6 respectively. The bounds for the landmarks required for the hex-derived network HDN1(n)are also proposed. 展开更多

Laser–plasma instability(LPI)is one of the main obstacles to achieving predictable and reproducible fusion at high gain through laser-driven inertial confinement fusion(ICF).In this paper, for the first time,we show analytically and confirm with three-dimensional particle-incell simulations that angular incoherence provides suppression of the instability growth rate that is additional to and much stronger than that provided by the well-known temporal and spatial incoherence usually used in ICF studies. For the model used in our calculations, the maximum field ratio between the stimulated Raman scattering and the driving pulses drops from 0.2 for a Laguerre–Gaussian pulse with a single nonzero topological charge to 0.05 for a super light spring with an angular momentum spread and random relative phases. In particular, angular incoherence does not introduce extra undesirable hot electrons. This provides a novel method for suppressing LPI by using light with an angular momentum spread and paves the way towards a low-LPI laser system for inertial fusion energy with a super light spring of incoherence in all dimensions of time, space, and angle, and may open the door to the use of longer-wavelength lasers for inertial fusion energy. 展开更多

Ecosystems generally have the self-adapting ability to resist various external pressures or disturbances, which is always called resilience. However, once the external disturbances exceed the tipping points of the system resilience, the consequences would be catastrophic, and eventually lead the ecosystem to complete collapse. We capture the collapse process of ecosystems represented by plant-pollinator networks with the k-core nested structural method, and find that a sufficiently weak interaction strength or a sufficiently large competition weight can cause the structure of the ecosystem to collapse from its smallest k-core towards its largest k-core.Then we give the tipping points of structure and dynamic collapse of the entire system from the one-dimensional dynamic function of the ecosystem. Our work provides an intuitive and precise description of the dynamic process of ecosystem collapse under multiple interactions, and provides theoretical insights into further avoiding the occurrence of ecosystem collapse. 展开更多

Many research findings have proven that the system of porous medium reservoirs exhibits different heterogeneous structures at various scales, demonstrating some form of self-similarity with fractal characteristics. In this paper, fractal theory is incorporated into the reservoir to investigate coupled flow between reservoir and horizontal well.By examining the pore structure of highly heterogeneous reservoirs, the fractal dimension can be determined.Analytical methods are utilized to solve the Green function of a point source in a reservoir with fractal characteristics.Employing Green's function and the principle of spatial superposition,a finite flow model for a horizontal well coupled with a fractal reservoir is developed to calculate the flow rate and flow profile of the horizontal well. The model also accounts for the impact of wellbore friction and is solved numerically.A specific example is used for calculation to analyze the influence of fractal parameters on the production and flow rate of the horizontal well. When considering the fractal characteristics of oil reservoirs, the flow rate of the horizontal well is lower than that in Euclidean space. As the fractal dimension increases, the connectivity of pores in the reservoir improves, making it easier to drive the fluid into the wellbore, and the flow distribution along the wellbore becomes more uniform.Conversely,as the anomalous diffusion index increases, the connectivity between pores deteriorates, thus the distribution of flow rate along the wellbore becomes more uneven. 展开更多

Understanding the mechanical properties and multiscale failure mechanism of frozen soft rock is an important prerequisite for the construction safety of tunnels, artificially frozen ground and other infrastructure in cold regions. In this study, the triaxial compression test are performed on mudstone in the weakly cemented soft rock strata in the mining area of western China, and the mechanical characteristics and failure mechanism of weakly cemented mudstone are systematically investigated under the combined action of freezing and loading.Furthermore, the quantitative relationship between the microstructural parameters and the macroscopic strength and deformation parameters is established based on fractal theory. Thus, the failure mechanism of frozen weakly cemented mudstone is revealed on both micro- and macro-scales.The results show that temperature and confining pressure significantly affects the elastic modulus and peak strength of weakly cemented mudstone. With decreasing temperature, the compressive strength increases, while the corresponding peak strain decreases gradually. On the deformation curve, the plastic deformation stage is shortened, and the brittle fracture feature at the post-peak stage is more prominent, and the elastic modulus correspondingly increases with decreasing temperature.Under low-temperature conditions, most of the weakly cemented mudstone undergoes microscopic shear failure along the main fracture surface. The micro-fracture morphology characteristics of weakly cemented mudstone under different temperatures are quantified via the fractal dimension, and an approximately exponential relationship can be obtained among the fractal dimension and the temperature, compressive strength and elastic modulus. 展开更多

We propose a novel framework for learning a low-dimensional representation of data based on nonlinear dynamical systems, which we call the dynamical dimension reduction(DDR).In the DDR model, each point is evolved via a nonlinear flow towards a lower-dimensional subspace;the projection onto the subspace gives the low-dimensional embedding.Training the model involves identifying the nonlinear flow and the subspace.Following the equation discovery method,we represent the vector field that defines the flow using a linear combination of dictionary elements, where each element is a pre-specified linear/nonlinear candidate function.A regularization term for the average total kinetic energy is also introduced and motivated by the optimal transport theory. We prove that the resulting optimization problem is well-posed and establish several properties of the DDR method. We also show how the DDR method can be trained using a gradient-based optimization method, where the gradients are computed using the adjoint method from the optimal control theory. The DDR method is implemented and compared on synthetic and example data sets to other dimension reduction methods, including the PCA,t-SNE,and Umap. 展开更多
