Open-Source Software Defined Networking Controllers:State-of-the-Art,Challenges and Solutions for Future Network Providers

Software Defined Networking(SDN)is programmable by separation of forwarding control through the centralization of the controller.The controller plays the role of the‘brain’that dictates the intelligent part of SDN technology.Various versions of SDN controllers exist as a response to the diverse demands and functions expected of them.There are several SDN controllers available in the open market besides a large number of commercial controllers;some are developed tomeet carrier-grade service levels and one of the recent trends in open-source SDN controllers is the Open Network Operating System(ONOS).This paper presents a comparative study between open source SDN controllers,which are known as Network Controller Platform(NOX),Python-based Network Controller(POX),component-based SDN framework(Ryu),Java-based OpenFlow controller(Floodlight),OpenDayLight(ODL)and ONOS.The discussion is further extended into ONOS architecture,as well as,the evolution of ONOS controllers.This article will review use cases based on ONOS controllers in several application deployments.Moreover,the opportunities and challenges of open source SDN controllers will be discussed,exploring carriergrade ONOS for future real-world deployments,ONOS unique features and identifying the suitable choice of SDN controller for service providers.In addition,we attempt to provide answers to several critical questions relating to the implications of the open-source nature of SDN controllers regarding vendor lock-in,interoperability,and standards compliance,Similarly,real-world use cases of organizations using open-source SDN are highlighted and how the open-source community contributes to the development of SDN controllers.Furthermore,challenges faced by open-source projects,and considerations when choosing an open-source SDN controller are underscored.Then the role of Artificial Intelligence(AI)and Machine Learning(ML)in the evolution of open-source SDN controllers in light of recent research is indicated.In addition,the challenges and limitations associated with deploying open-source SDN controllers in production networks,how can they be mitigated,and finally how opensource SDN controllers handle network security and ensure that network configurations and policies are robust and resilient are presented.Potential opportunities and challenges for future Open SDN deployment are outlined to conclude the article.

Poke And Delayed Drink Intertemporal Choice Task(POKE-ADDICT):An open-source behavioral apparatus for intertemporal choice testing in rodents

Advancements in neuroscience research present opportunities and challenges,requiring substantial resources and funding.To address this,we describe here“Poke And Delayed Drink Intertemporal Choice Task(POKE-ADDICT)”,an open-source,versatile,and cost-effective apparatus for intertemporal choice testing in rodents.This allows quantification of delay discounting(DD),a cross-species phenomenon observed in decision making which provides valuable insights into higher-order cognitive functioning.In DD,the subjective value of a delayed reward is reduced as a function of the delay for its receipt.Using our apparatus,we implemented an effective intertemporal choice paradigm for the quantification of DD based on an adjusting delayed amount(ADA)algorithm using mango juice as a reward.Our paradigm requires limited training,a few 3D-printed parts and inexpensive electrical components,including a Raspberry Pi control unit.Furthermore,it is compatible with several in vivo procedures and the use of nose pokes instead of levers allows for faster task learning.Besides the main application described here,the apparatus can be further extended to implement other behavioral tests and protocols,including standard operant conditioning.In conclusion,we describe a versatile and cost-effective design based on Raspberry Pi that can support research in animal behavior,decision making and,more specifically,delay discounting.

Code Reviewer Intelligent Prediction in Open Source Industrial Software Project

Currently, open-source software is gradually being integrated into industrial software, while industry protocolsin industrial software are also gradually transferred to open-source community development. Industrial protocolstandardization organizations are confronted with fragmented and numerous code PR (Pull Request) and informalproposals, and differentworkflowswill lead to increased operating costs. The open-source community maintenanceteam needs software that is more intelligent to guide the identification and classification of these issues. To solvethe above problems, this paper proposes a PR review prediction model based on multi-dimensional features. Weextract 43 features of PR and divide them into five dimensions: contributor, reviewer, software project, PR, andsocial network of developers. The model integrates the above five-dimensional features, and a prediction model isbuilt based on a Random Forest Classifier to predict the review results of PR. On the other hand, to improve thequality of rejected PRs, we focus on problems raised in the review process and review comments of similar PRs.Wepropose a PR revision recommendation model based on the PR review knowledge graph. Entity information andrelationships between entities are extracted from text and code information of PRs, historical review comments,and related issues. PR revisions will be recommended to code contributors by graph-based similarity calculation.The experimental results illustrate that the above twomodels are effective and robust in PR review result predictionand PR revision recommendation.

A New Talent Cultivation Model Under Open-source Environment:A Case Study at Zhejiang University

The open-source movement profoundly impacts the development of computer education.The current requirements for postgraduate cultivation in Chinese universities mainly include publishing papers,applying for patents,winning awards,and conducting research projects,which demonstrate the capabilities of students when they graduate from university.However,in today’s prevalent open-source culture,these types of assessments are still not comprehensive enough for postgraduate cultivation,especially for professional postgraduate degrees.For this reason,Zhejiang University takes the lead in proposing educational reforms for postgraduate cultivation based on the open-source ecosystem.It has implemented a new“trinity”mechanism(i.e.,open-source course,open-source training,and open-source capability evaluation)for graduate training centered on open source,serving as a novel supplement to the traditional methods of postgraduate cultivation.After a year of pilot operation,this new approach,deeply loved by teachers and students,has achieved good results and positive feedback.

Web service based spatial forest information system using an open source software approach

For technical and other reasons there is a dilemma that data providers cannot find an appropriate way to redistribute spatial forest data and data users who need spatial data cannot access and integrate available forest resources information. To overcome this dilemma, this paper proposed a spatial forest information system based on Web service using an open source software approach. With Web service based architecture, the system can enable interoperability, integrate Web services from other application servers, reuse codes, and shorten the development time and cost. At the same time, it is possible to extend the local system to a regional or national spatial forest information system. The growth of Open Source Software （OSS） provides an alternative choice to proprietary software for operating systems, web servers, Web-based GIS applications and database management systems. Using open source software to develop spatial forest information systems can greatly reduce the cost while providing high performance and sharing spatial forest information. We chose open source software to build a prototype system for Xixia County, Henan Province, China. By integrating OSS packages Deegree and UMN MapServer which are compliant to the OGC open specifications, the prototype system enables users to access spatial forest information and travelling information of Xixia County which come from two different data servers via a standard Web browser and promotes spatial forest information sharing.

Intelligent In-Vehicle Safety System Based on Yolov5

In order to reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents and assist drivers to avoid dangerous driving. This paper presents a smart in-vehicle safety system that utilises the Yolov5 algorithm. Yolov5 algorithm is used to anticipate driver fatigue and distraction behaviours, and remind drivers to pay attention to safe driving in time. The system continuously splits the frames and analyses the frame content through the video feedback from the front camera, compared to the traditional machine learning, Yolov5’s mosaic data is enhanced, resulting in a batch size enhancement of 92.3%, and it also uses the Drop Block mechanism to prevent overfitting. The hardware of this system uses STM32 microcontroller and uses system DMA interrupt control and buzzer alarm device to warn about dangerous driving behaviour.

Predicting the Maintainability of Open Source Software Using Design Metrics

This paper empirically investigates the relationships between 15 design metrics and maintainability of 148 Java open source software. The results show that size and complexity metrics are strongly related to the maintainability of open source software. However, cohesion and coupling, as currently captured by existing metrics, do not seem to have a significant impact on maintainability. When used together, these metrics can predict system maintainability fairly accurately （mean MREs below 30%）.

Strategic information perception methods and practices in the open source intelligence

Open source intelligence is one of the most important public data sources for strategic information analysis. One of the primary and core issues of strategic information research is information perception,so this paper mainly expounds the perception method for strategic information perception in the open source intelligence environment as well as the framework and basic process of information perception. This paper argues that in order to match the information perception result with the information depiction result,it conducts practical exploration for the results of information acquisition,perception,depiction and analysis. This paper introduces and develops a monitoring platform for information perception. The results show that the method proposed in this paper is feasible.

Evaluation and Customization of Different Open Source Desktop GIS Software

This paper gave a general evaluation on existing three popular free and open source desktop GIS projects,according to the selected evaluation criteria.To further the understanding of the open source software,this paper also presented a customization example of QGIS with python and PyQT.

New application of open source data and Rock Engineering System for debris flow susceptibility analysis

This research describes a quantitative,rapid,and low-cost methodology for debris flow susceptibility evaluation at the basin scale using open-access data and geodatabases.The proposed approach can aid decision makers in land management and territorial planning,by first screening for areas with a higher debris flow susceptibility.Five environmental predisposing factors,namely,bedrock lithology,fracture network,quaternary deposits,slope inclination,and hydrographic network,were selected as independent parameters and their mutual interactions were described and quantified using the Rock Engineering System(RES)methodology.For each parameter,specific indexes were proposed,aiming to provide a final synthetic and representative index of debris flow susceptibility at the basin scale.The methodology was tested in four basins located in the Upper Susa Valley(NW Italian Alps)where debris flow events are the predominant natural hazard.The proposed matrix can represent a useful standardized tool,universally applicable,since it is independent of type and characteristic of the basin.

An Open Source Toolkit for Identifying Comparative Space-time Research Questions

Comparative space-time thinking lies at the heart of spatiotemporally integrated social sciences. The multiple dimensions and scales of socioeconomic dynamics pose numerous challenges for the application and evaluation of public policies in the comparative context. At the same time, social scientists have been slow to adopt and implement new spatiotemporally explicit methods of data analysis due to the lack of extensible software packages, which becomes a major impediment to the promotion of spatiotemporal thinking. The proposed framework will address this need by developing a set of research questions based on space-time-distributional features of socioeconomic datasets. The authors aim to develop, evaluate, and implement this framework in an open source toolkit to comprehensively quantify the changes and level of hidden variation of space-time datasets across scales and dimensions. Free access to the source code allows a broader community to incorporate additional advances in perspectives and methods, thus facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration. Being written in Python, it is entirely cross-platform, lowering transmission costs in research and education.

With the rapid development of lnternet technology, the volume of data has increased exponentially. As the large amounts of data are no longer easy to be managed and secured by the owners, big data security and privacy has become a hot issue. One of the most popular research fields for solving the data security and data privacy is within the scope of big data governance and security, In this paper, we introduce the basic concepts of data governance and security. Then, all the state-of-the-art open source frameworks for data governance and security, including Apache Falcon, Apache Atlas, Apache Ranger, Apache Sentry and Kerberos, are detailed and discussed with descriptions of their implementation principles and possible applications.

Use of Open Source Software for the Development of Web GIS for Accessibility to Tourist Attractions

Based on the concepts of social inclusion, universal design and accessibility, this paper aims to describe the stages of the development and implementation of a Web GIS （geographic information system for the internet） based on OS （open source） software The Web GIS developed is called ＂accessibility to Campinas tourist attractions＂, which provides information about cultural and natural attractions in Campinas/SP-Brazil, especially for people with disabilities or reduced mobility that prevents access these sites via public and private transportation. The verification of the existence or lack of accessibility equipment at bus stops and parking areas close to tourist attractions relies on current legislation （NBR 9050/1994） that establishes the right to accessibility for disabled people to transportation, local culture and leisure. An application that facilitates this recognition with low operating costs and high performance was developed using the OS software Quantum GIS 1.0.2, Apache 2.2.4, Mapserver 5.0.2, I3GEO 4.0, PostgreSQL 8.3 and PostGIS 1.3.5. This software is able to integrate the management of tourist areas and the advertisement of tourist information regarding accessibility devices at sights recognized as tourist attractions by Campinas city hall.

Integrated Open Source Design for Architecture in High-Density Housing Practice

High-density housing can be interpreted as collections of individual units, which inevitably results in the dilemma between the global standardization designed by architects and local customization implemented by users. However, it is impossible to reflect the users＇ various needs in the conceptual design stage for high-density housing because of the economic, industrial and time constrains. In response to this challenge, this research paper outlines a different high-density housing design approach that can adopt users＇ individual customization in the conceptual design stage during the housing design practice. Hence, the design process would be an open-ended evolutionary and transparent process rather than deterministic executions as we have now in most high-density cities, such as Hong Kong. In order to overcome the deficiency in addressing future uncertainties of different users and address the issues of one-off developments without iterating users＇ feedback in the housing practice, this essay proposes IOSDA （integrated open source design for architecture） for the design practice of high-density housing, through collective data and parametric connectivity between users and architects. IOSDA reflects a different design attitude towards the future, i.e., to shift from architects＇ heroic prediction of the future to collective engagement of the present with more robust capacities for new possibilities.

The evolutionary complexity of modem media systems represents an area of research that would benefit from further description and debate. In order to better understand the challenges and considerations associated with the new, constantly changing media ecology, a more holistic worldview must be catapulted to the forefront of the collective discussion. To that effect, the following essay examines the open source software movement from the philosophical perspective of Tibetan Buddhism. Using the principles of interconnectedness, impermanence, and the illusory nature of self and reality, all fundamental elements of Buddhist philosophy, this discussion provides a renewed framework for exploring the ethical implications of open sourcing. A review of Buddhist teachings, coupled with literature from foundational media theorists such as Neil Postman and Marshall and Eric McLuhan, will set the stage for contemplating the ethics of the modem information ecology, epitomized by the collaborative spirit and community connections of open source software.

Open Source Synthesis and Verification Tool for Fixed-to-Floating and Floating-to-Fixed Points Conversions

An open source high level synthesis fixed-to-floating and floating-to-fixed conversion tool is presented for embedded design, communication systems, and signal processing applications. Many systems use a fixed point number system. Fixed point numbers often need to be converted to floating point numbers for higher accuracy, dynamic range, fixed-length transmission limitations or end user requirements. A similar conversion system is needed to convert floating point numbers to fixed point numbers due to the advantages that fixed point numbers offer when compared with floating point number systems, such as compact hardware, reduced verification time and design effort. The latest embedded and SoC designs use both number systems together to improve accuracy or reduce required hardware in the same design. The proposed open source design and verification tool converts fixed point numbers to floating point numbers, and floating point numbers to fixed point numbers using the IEEE-754 floating point number standard. This open source design tool generates HDL code and its test bench that can be implemented in FPGA and VLSI systems. The design can be compiled and simulated using open source Iverilog/GTKWave and verified using Octave. A high level synthesis tool and GUI are designed using C#. The proposed design tool can increase productivity by reducing the design and verification time, as well as reduce the development cost due to the open source nature of the design tool. The proposed design tool can be used as a standalone block generator or implemented into current designs to improve range, accuracy, and reduce the development cost. The generated design has been implemented on Xilinx FPGAs.

API Development Increases Access to Shared Computing Resources at Boston University

Within the last few decades, increases in computational resources have contributed enormously to the progress of science and engineering (S & E). To continue making rapid advancements, the S & E community must be able to access computing resources. One way to provide such resources is through High-Performance Computing (HPC) centers. Many academic research institutions offer their own HPC Centers but struggle to make the computing resources easily accessible and user-friendly. Here we present SHABU, a RESTful Web API framework that enables S & E communities to access resources from Boston University’s Shared Computing Center (SCC). The SHABU requirements are derived from the use cases described in this work.
