Social discrimination of races and racial oppression in American colonial history had deep devastating impact on Afro-Americans.Their true identities were shattered and the truth of their existence was constructed for them by the so-called superior white American race.Afro-Americans’struggles for recognition had been started since the moment racial oppression took place and United States might profess now to be agenda-free but contemporary Afro-American literature does not say so.Critical Discourse Analysis and Critical Race Analysis of Toni Morrison’s work manifests that Afro-Americans are still struggling for their recognition and their place in the white US society;she delineates their pain of going through the continuous identity-formation process that how white American society still make them finding escapes because of their dark skin tone and put them in need to prove them to be worthy of living in America. Her writing has helped analyze Afro-American subjectivation through a series of socio-psycho conceptualizations.Frantz Fanon’s work on western colonial racial oppression and identity crisis of blacks has helped analyze what traumatic culture Afro-Americans faced. His work sheds light on that disrespect and contempt experiences of blacks in personal and collective terms which they have been facing under the rule of white supremacy.Morrison’s fiction and Fanon’s“socio-psychopolitics”—his critical psychological approach analyzes the identity crisis that functions betwixt sociopolitical and psychological realms—have yielded the analyses of how manipulative power of“Racial Politics”actualizes its agendas.Morrison’s work demonstrates how historical trauma of turning Afro-Americans into stereotypical subjects still prevails in the blacks living in the contemporary racist and prejudiced white America while Fanon’s work gives a vast and detailed framework of analysis;his work consists on intersectionality and psychopolitical violence which have been forcing blacks to turn their identities into whiteness by accepting blackness as if it is evil. 展开更多

Georgian historiography being an attempt to create a shared and self-congratulatory impression of the past serves as verbal equivalent of a national monument. Ann Radcliffe's Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne was written during the acme of popularity of gothified histories. This makes the novel a high drama of murder and revenge, usurpation and restoration, love and abduction, cruelty and virtue upholding common people's vow of joining hands to fight for ethical cause of avenging oppression against the backdrop of the Scottish highlands. On the one hand, the novel helps in perpetuating nationalist identity among English citizens by acclaiming virtuous, just, and moral act of the rightful feudal Chief Osbert and declaiming in contrast the avarice, oppression and lust of the usurper Malcolm. On the other hand, the self-devastating pride and calm resignation of the highborn women such as Mary and Louisa portrayed in the novel conform and thereby contribute to the notion of the "Angel in the House". The paper, thus, will examine the role of prevalent sense of honour and values imbibed in the major characters of the novel in bringing justice to the oppressed characters. 展开更多

Wuthering heights, it lines with Heathcliff's love, hatred, revenge and awakeness. This paper will analysize the root of Heathcliff's tragedy and draw a rather balanced conclusion from the aspect of morality. On one hand, he is a devil of his crazy, unreasonable revenge on others; on the other hand, he is a hero from the aspect of humanity because he insists in pursuing true love and never submits to the adversity. His life tragedy reveals the viciousness of the society and lashes the harm of spirit from the social sense of hierarchy. 展开更多

John Steinbeck(1902-1968) is a famous American novelist. The Chrysanthemums was considered to be one of his finest short stories which has become progressively more influential in gender studies during the following decades. As the protagonist, Elisa unfolds herself in front of the readers about her rebellion and submission to the reigning patriarchal ideology. In the paper, I try to present Elisa's mind journey in a male-dominating society, using gender studies analysis. The theme of this story is to describe women's position in a male-centered and controlled culture. In order to give a most justifiable analysis of the theme of this short story, I base my study of Elisa's mind journey on the prospective of gender studies. 展开更多

The goal of this paper is to establish from Simone de Beauvoir's perspective what happens when the situation and rights of French women are examined from the purview of their position as colonial subjects--as women colonizer. Following the analysis of Beauvoir as featured in The Ethics of Ambiguity and The Second Sex, the author first begins by examining the situation and rights of French women colonizer as it relates to the situation of the colonized. And then, the author examines the situation and rights of these women from their own stands as women and in relationships to the situation and rights of white French men. The paper concludes that while French women may have experienced white privilege, they suffered from gender oppression deriving from their second-class status as French colonial subjects. 展开更多

This paper is an attempt to bring to the foreground a better understanding and appreciation of the work and impact of an Arab Muslim woman writer whose work, characters, thoughts, settings, and words sink very sensitively into the depth of being of her oriental women characters. They are very local and they reflect a typical oriental and distinct religious sentiment, along with an underlying predicament or suffering because of some lack in their love life, both emotional and sexual. This paper will attempt to analyze how the short story written by Alifa Rifaat (1987) deal with the thorny issues Of religiosity and sexuality that might appear as two opposing poles, yet they mix and blend within same characters exposing different aspects of the human being living within dilemmas of personal needs and social dictates of tradition, taboo, and culture. For a non Arab reader, this should be an interesting and informative cross-cultural issue. 展开更多

The Yellow Wallpaper examines the role of women in 19th-century American society, including the relationship between husbands and wives, the economic and social dependence of women on men, and the repression of female individuality and sexuality. The Victorian era had a profound impact on social values in the United States, stressing that women were to behave gracefully and remain within the domestic sphere. The novel takes place in a country house located about three miles from the nearest village. The Setting has the appearance of tranquility, but is actually a place of confinement--There are bars on the windows of the nursery, and the bed is secured to the floor The isolated location of the house, its somewhat neglected condition, and her further isolation in the fortress-like nursery, symbolize the narrator's mental condition. Several symbols are employed in the story to reveal the oppression of women by men and the struggle against that male dominated society. The yellow wallpaper is symbolic of the Cult of True Womanhood, which binds women to the home and family. Like Charlotte Gilman, women were constricted to the set parameters that men determined. Getting beyond the yellow wallpaper, women defied the corrupted power that men wielded over women, escaped their confinement, and created for themselves a new ideological role, one that included entry into the public sphere 展开更多

The year of 1968 was a pivotal year that impacts the United States and the world to this very day, forty years later. It was a year in the United States that witnessed the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., in April and of Robert Kennedy in June, ongoing student protests against the war in Vietnam, the Tet offensive and the My Lai Massacre, the upheaval of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August, as well as the civil rights movement and the initial manifestations of the women's movement and the environmental movement. Moreover, beyond the borders of the United States, student demonstrations against government oppression occurred in Warsaw in March, in Paris in May, and in Mexico City in September tied to the Olympic Games that year in Mexico. The researchers also witnessed the joy of the Prague Spring from January until the subsequent Soviet-led Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia at the end of August. Richard M. Nixon was elected president of the United States in November, the counterrevolution of conservatism, if you will, that may have run its 40-year course with the administration of George W. Bush and the election on November 4 2008 of Democratic Illinois Senator Barack Obama. 展开更多
