The robustness of the software-synchronized all-optical sampling for optical performance monitoring is estimated for 10-Gb/s fiber communication systems. It reveals that the software-synchronized algorithm is sensitive to the signal degradation caused by chromatic dispersion and nonlinearity in optical fibers. The influence of timing jitter and amplitude fluctuation of the sampling pulses is also investigated. It is found that stringent requirements are imposed on the quality of the sampling pulse and the tolerance of 1-dB Q penalty is measured. Considering the practically available optical sampling pulse sources, the results indicate that the amplitude fluctuation of the sampling pulses has the dominant impacts on the software-synchronized method. 展开更多

A programmable transversal equalizer for electronic dispersion compensation(EDC) in optical fiber communication systems is developed.Based on the SiGe technology with a cut-off frequency of 80 GHz,the equalizer consists of 6 seriesparallel amplifiers as delay units and 7 Gilbert variable gain amplifiers as taps,which ensure that the equalizer can work at the bit rate of 10 Gb/s.With different tap gains,the forward voltage gain of the transversal equalizer varies,which demonstrates that the equalizer has various filtering characteristics such as low pass filtering,band pass filtering,band reject filtering,and notch filtering,so it can effectively simulate the inverse transfer function of dispersive channels in optical communications,and can be used for compensating the inter-symbol interference and other nonlinear problems caused by dispersion.The equalizer(including pads) occupies an area of 0.40 mm × 1.08 mm,and its total power dissipation is 400 mW with 3.3 V power supply. 展开更多

The combination of fast polarization scrambler (FPS) and forward error correction (FEC) is one of the methods to mitigate the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in high-speed optical fiber communication systems. The effect of the different distribution patterns of FPS on PMD mitigation with FEC is investi- gated. A comparison of the bit error rates (BERs) between two cases where the distributed FPS is absent and present along the fiber is carried out by simulation. A novel representation called the "ring chart" to assess the performance of different distribution patterns intuitively is proposed. The results show that the distribution pattern is an impact factor for this PMD mitigation scheme. 展开更多

The use of Bell Laboratories layered space-time (BLAST) architecture as a digital signal processing algorithm is proposed in this letter. It is aimed at improving the nonlinearity tolerance of a polarization division multiplexing (PDM) coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system. The application of this channel estimation algorithm simulates system performance under different dispersion compensation (DC) maps. Simulation results show that, compared with intra-symbol frequency-domain averaging (ISFA) algorithm, at least 5-dB Q-factor improvement is achieved for the PDM CO-OFDM system at 112-Gb/s data rate over an 800-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without DC. 展开更多

Optical attenuator based on phase modulation of a spatial light modulator

In this Letter, we propose an optical attenuator based on the phase modulation of a spatial light modulator (SLM). In this system, we use two polarized beam splitters (PBSs) to control the polarized light and one SLM to modulate the phase of the polarized light. In the initial state, the light beam is divided into p-light and s-light when it passes through the first PBS. When the light passes through the second PBS, s-light is reflected and p-light is detected by the CCD camera. By loading different grayscales on the SLM, p-light changes its polarized state to s-light. The light power can be attenuated during the loading process. Our experiment shows that the system can obtain a wide optical attenuation from 1-27.2 dB. When loading two grayscales, the SLM has a fast switching time of 25 ms under a low actuated voltage of 5.5 V. The response time of the optical attenuator depends on the switching time of the SLM. Therefore, the system can also have a fast response time. By using the method of spatial multiplexing and adding two mirrors in the system, it can also be extended into a 1 × 2 optical switch. The results verify its feasibility. The optical attenuator has wide applications in photonic signal processing and fiber-optic communication. 展开更多

An adaptive polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation experiment is reported in a 40-Gb/s phase shaped binary transmission (PSBT) communication system, with the use of a new digital signal processor (DSP)-based optical PMD compensator. PMD tolerance is found to be enhanced by 8 ps after PMD compensation with 1-dB optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty. Under the condition of fast change of states of polarization up to 85 rad/s in the fiber link, the performance of our PMD compensator undergoes the bit error ratio (BER) test for as long as 10 h. 展开更多

A new modulation format in optical fiber communication system, the eight differential phase shift keying (8DPSK) of multi-phase modulation technology based on carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) is proposed in this paper. The formulae of CSRZ-8DPSK modem methods are derived theoretically and the methods are demonstrated. Spectra based on CSRZ and CSRZ-8DPSK modulation methods and their eye diagrams by simulation with MATLAB are obtained. The results show that the CSRZ-8DPSK modulation methods have narrower spectra with higher efficiency. The performance of eye diagrams is also much satisfactory after demodulation, suggesting some possible applications of the methods in the next generation of optical fiber communications. 展开更多

We design a compact triplexer based on two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal lattice photonic crystals (PCs). A folded directional coupler (FDC) is introduced in the triplexer beside the point-defect micro-cavities and line-defect waveguides. Because of the reflection feedback of the FDC, high channel drop efficiency can be realized and a compact size with the order of micrometers can be maintained. The proposed device is analyzed using the plane wave expansion method, and its transmission characteristics are calculated using the finite-difference time-domain method. The footprint of the triplexer is about 12 9 μm, and its extinction ratios are less than -20 dB for 1310 nm, approximately -20 dB for 1490 nm, and under -40 dB for 1550 nm, making it a potentially essential device in future fiber-to-the-home networks. 展开更多
