Based on the solution from Schmidl and Cox, a timing metric related to TSC scheme is put forward and examined. The specific method to select a threshold value provides more precise detection results, which can be shown by performance comparison between the two schemes through Monte Carlo simulation. Taking IEEE 802.1 la WLAN standard as an example, the proposed approach is superior to the most popular Schmidl scheme in terms of BER. 展开更多

Contrary to the other multi-carrier modulation systems, the coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing communication system with an offset quadrature amplitude modulation (CO-OFDM-OQAM) possesses inherent imaginary interference (IMI). This has an important impact on the channel estimation process. Currently, a variety of frequency-domain channel estimation methods have been proposed. However, there are various problems that still exist. For instance, in order to reduce the influence of IMI, it is necessary to insert more guard intervals between the training sequence and the payload, leading to the occupation of excessive spectrum resources. In order to address this problem, this work designs a high spectral efficient frequency-domain channel estimation method for the polarization-division-multiplexing CO-OFDM-OQAM systems. First, the working principle of the proposed method is described in detail. Then, its spectral efficiency, power peak-to-average ratio, and channel estimation performance are studied based on simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed method improves the spectral efficiency without worsening the power peak-to-average ratio. The channel estimation capability of this method is verified in three scenarios of long-distance transmissions, including back-to-back, 100 km, and 200 km transmissions. . 展开更多

In this paper, Doppler estimation and the respective compensation technique along with various diversity techniques were deliberated for OFDM-based systems best suited for underwater wireless information exchange. In practice, for mobile communication, adjustment and tuning of transducers in order to get spatial diversity is extremely difficult. Considering the relatively low coherence bandwidth in UWA, the frequency diversity design with the Doppler compensation function was elaborated here. The outfield experiments of mobile underwater acoustic communication (UWAC) based on OFDM were carried out with 0.17 bit/(s-Hz) spectral efficiency. A reduced dimensional (RD)-MUSIC based algorithm for channel estimation is proposed in multiple antenna OFDM systems with unknown CFO. The Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of channel estimation in multiple antenna OFDM systems with unknown CFO is derived. The in-phase and quadrature-phase imbalance (IQI) is one of the major radio frequency impairments existing in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with direct-conversion transceivers. During the transmission of the communication signal, the impact of IQI is coupled with channel impulse responses (CIR), which makes the traditional channel estimation schemes ineffective. A decoupled estimation scheme is proposed to separately estimate the frequency-dependent IQI and wireless channel. Firstly, the generalized channel model is built to separate the parameters of IQI and wireless channel. Then an iterative estimation scheme of frequency-dependent IQI is designed at the initial stage of communication. Finally, based on the estimation result of IQI, the least square algorithm is utilized to estimate the channel-related parameters at each time of channel variation. Compared with the joint estimation schemes of IQI and channel, the proposed decoupled estimation scheme requires much lower training overhead at each time of channel variation. Simulation results demonstrate the good estimation performance of the proposed scheme. 展开更多

A particle filter is proposed to perform joint estimation of the carrier frequency offset (CFO) and the channel in multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) wireless communication systems. It marginalizes out the channel parameters from the sampling space in sequential importance sampling (SIS), and propagates them with the Kalman filter. Then the importance weights of the CFO particles are evaluated according to the imaginary part of the error between measurement and estimation. The varieties of particles are maintained by sequential importance resampling (SIR). Simulation results demonstrate this algorithm can estimate the CFO and the channel parameters with high accuracy. At the same time, some robustness is kept when the channel model has small variations. 展开更多

An explicit formula for the ergodic capacity of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)-based Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems under correlated frequency selective Rayleigh channels is derived,by simplifying the channel response matrix in frequency domain into the so-called Kronecker model composed of three kinds of correlations,i.e.multipath tap gain correlation and spatial fading correlations at both transmitter and receiver.The derived formula is very simple and convenient for one to estimate the effects of all three kinds of correlations on MIMO-OFDM capacity.If taps are independent,there is a very simple expression for the ergodic capacity.In case of tap correlation,the capacity formula could be further given in an integral expression.The validity of the new formula is verified and the effects of correlations,delay spread as well as the number of subcarriers on the ergodic capacity are evaluated via Monte Carlo simulations. 展开更多

Adaptive modulation can optimize the spectrum efficiency and system performance with the channel state information achieved by the long-range channel prediction. To avoid re-estimating channel correlation function as the channel stationarity varies and to track the channel adaptively, LMS (Least-Mean-Square) based long-range channel prediction is discussed in the existing literature, but it needs long observation interval to reach the convergence. Given that all OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) subcarriers have the identical time-domain correlation and stationarity during the same time interval, this paper proposed a 2-D LMS based predictor which updates the filter weights in both time and frequency domain. The proposed scheme can effectively decrease the observation intervals and significantly speed up the convergence than the conventional LMS and Parallel LMS (PLMS). Complexity analysis and simulation results prove that the proposed scheme can improve the BER (Bit Error Rate) performance and spectrum efficiency with negligible complexity increase. 展开更多

This paper deals with optimal training design and placement over multiple orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) symbols for the least squares(LS) channel estimation in multiple-input multipleoutput(MIMO) OFDM systems.First,the optimal pilot sequences over multiple OFDM symbols are derived by co-cyclic Jacket matrices based on the minimum mean square error(MSE) of the LS channel estimation.Then,an enhanced channel estimation method using sliding window is proposed to improve further the performance for the optimal pilot sequences in fast-varying channels.Simulation results show that the enhancedmethod can efficiently improve the performances for the optimal pilot sequences over two and four OFDM symbols,especially in fast-varying channels. 展开更多

This paper presents an algorithm that aims to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) communication systems while maintaining frequency tracking.The algorithm achieves PAPR reduction by applying the complex conjugates of the data symbol obtained from the frequency domain to cancel the phase of the data symbol.A likelihood estimator is used to obtain the sub-carrier phase error due to the residual carrier frequency offset(RCFO) using the same complex conjugates as a pilot signal.Furthermore,a joint time and frequency domain multicarrier phase locked loop(MPLL) is developed to compensate additional frequency offset.Simulation results show that this algorithm is capable of reducing PAPR without impacting the frequency tracking performance. 展开更多

Frame and frequency synchronization are essential for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The frame offset owing to incorrect start point position of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) window, and the carrier frequency offset (CFO) due to Doppler frequency shift or the frequency mismatch between the transmitter and receiver oscil ators, can bring severe inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) for the OFDM system. Relying on the relatively good correlation charac-teristic of the pseudo-noise (PN) sequence, a joint frame offset and normalized CFO estimation algorithm based on PN preamble in time domain is developed to realize the frame and frequency synchronization in the OFDM system. By comparison, the perfor-mances of the traditional algorithm and the improved algorithm are simulated under different conditions. The results indicate that the PN preamble based algorithm both in frame offset estimation and CFO estimation is more accurate, resource-saving and robust even under poor channel condition, such as low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and large normalized CFO. 展开更多

This paper describes an iterative blind receiver consisting of a sequential Monte Carlo detector, a CFO estimator, and a compensator to reduce intercarrier interference. The framework is of low complexity due to the separation of tasks in a joint detection problem. In addition, the CFO estimator utilizes soft output of the sequential Monte Carlo detector, which reduces the information loss caused by hard decisions and can obtain the CFO estimate in only one OFDM symbol. This paper proposes a scheme to construct time- frequency codes based on protograph low density parity check (LDPC) codes in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems. This approach synthesizes two techniques: protograph LDPC codes and OFDM. One symbol of encoded information by protograph LDPC codes corresponds to one sub-carrier, namely the length of encoded information equals to the number of sub-carriers. The design of good protograph LDPC codes with short lengths is given, and the proposed proto- graph LDPC codes can be of fast encoding, which can reduce the encoding complexity and simplify encoder hardware implementa- tion. The proposed approach provides a higher coding gain in the Rayleigh fading channel. The simulation results in the Rayleigh fading channel show that the bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed time-frequency codes is as good as random LDPC- OFDM codes and is better than Tanner LDPC-OFDM codes under the condition of different fading coefficients. 展开更多

The algorithm is based on the Schmidl and Minn's symbol timing principle,the constructed GMW sequence is trans-mitted and disposed,and the synchronization is adjudicated using the correlation of GMW sequence. As one solution to implement the largecapacity space division multiplexing(SDM)transmission systems,the mode division multiplexing(MDM)has gained much attention recently.The vector mode(VM),which is the eigenmode of the optical fiber,has also been adopted to realize the optical communications including the transmission over free-space optical(FSO)and optical fiber links.Considering the concerns on the short-reach optical interconnects,the low cost and high integration technologies should be developed.Direct detection(DD)with higher-order modulation formats in combination of MDM technologies could offer an available trade-off in system performance and complexity.We review demonstrations of FSO and fiber high-speed data transmission based on the VM MDM(VMDM)technologies.The special VMs,cylindrical vector beams(CVB),have been generated by the q-plate(QP)and characterized accordingly.And then they were used to implement the VMDM transmission with direct-detection orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(DD-OFDM).These demonstrations show the potential of VMDM-DD-OFDM technology in the large-capacity short-reach transmission links. 展开更多

Optical spatial modulation (OSM) is a multiple-transmitter technique that can provide higher data rates with low system complexity as compared with single-input single-output systems. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is widely implemented to achieve better spectral efficiency in wireless channels. Asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (O-OFDM) and DC-biased O-OFDM are two well-known O-OFDM techniques suitable for intensity-modulation direct-detection optical systems. In this work, sample indexed spatial OFDM (SIS-OFDM) is proposed to combine OSM and O-OFDM in a novel way and achieve significant per- formance gain. By assigning time-domain samples of the O-OFDM transmit symbol to different transmitters, SIS-OFDM achieves much better spectral efficiency and reduces computational complexity at the transmitter as compared with previous work that combines OSM with O-OFDM in the frequency domain. We also consider the impact of optical source biasing on overall performance, and the relative performance of imaging receiver (ImR) versus non-imaging receiver (NImR) design for our proposed SIS-OFDM technique. Results indicate that for an Ntx x Nrx multiple-input multiple-output configuration where Nix = N = 4, SIS-OFDM using ImR can achieve up to 135 dB of signal-to-noise ratio gain over comparable system using a NImR. Also, using Nc number of O-OFDM subcarriers provides up to Nsc × log2(Ntx) additional bits per symbol of spectral efficiency over technioues that combine OSM and O-OFDM in the freollencv domain. 展开更多

A new training symbol weighted by pseudo-noise(PN) sequence is designed and an efficient timing and fre-quency offset estimation scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) systems is proposed. The timing synchronization is accomplished by using the piecewise symmetric conjugate of the primitive training symbol and the good autocorrelation of PN weighted factor. The frequency synchronization is finished by utilizing the training symbol whose PN weighted factor is removed after the timing synchronization. Compared with conventional schemes, the pro-posed scheme can achieve a smaller mean square error and provide a wider frequency acquisition range. 展开更多

The paper proposes a novel approach for fine frequency synchronization of OFDM syn- chronization systems in multi-path channels. Maximum Likelihood (ML) function of frequency offsets including integral and decimal parts in frequency domain is developed according to the law of great number to eliminate the noise impact of the signal. When the timing delay close to the actual time, the proposed function produces a deep valley indicating frequency offset when large Valley-Square- Error (VSE) appears. Coarse timing offset can also be detected when function’s Valley-Square-Error (VSE) is maximized. Simulation results shows that the proposed algorithm gives very robust estimation of frequency offset, and a coarse timing offset estimation. 展开更多
