Since the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) lacks strict orthogonality, the method of orthogonal empirical mode decomposition (OEMD) is innovationally proposed. The primary thought of this method is to obtain the intrinsic mode function (IMF) and the residual function by auto-adaptive band-pass filtering. OEMD is proved to preserve strict orthogonality and completeness theoretically, and the orthogonal basis function of OEMD is generated, then an algorithm to implement OEMD fast, IMF binary searching algorithm is built based on the point that the analytical band-pass filtering preserves perfect band-pass feature in the frequency domain. The application into harmonic detection shows that OEMD successfully conquers mode aliasing, avoids the occurrence of false mode, and is featured by fast computing speed. Furthermore, it can achieve harmonic detection accurately combined with the least square method. 展开更多

The basic concepts about the active structures and some attributes of the modes were presented in paper “Liner Active Structures and Modes]( I) ". The characteristics of the active discrete systems and active beams were discussed, especially, the stability of the active structures and the orthogonality of the eigenvectors. The notes about modes were portrayed by a model of a seven-storeyed building with sensors and actuators. The concept of the adjoint active structure was extended from the discrete systems to the beams that were the representations of the continuous structures. Two types of beams with different placements of the measuring and actuating systems were discussed in detail. One is the beam with the discrete sensors and actuators, and the other is the beam with distributed sensor and actuator function. The orthogonality conditions were derived with the modal shapes of the active beam and its adjoint active beam. An example shows that the variation of eigenvalues with feedback amplitude for the homo-configuration and non-homo-configuration active structures. 展开更多

Characteristics of aerodynamic force and flow structure behind single box girder under isolated slit control

An isolated slit was placed in a single box girder to obtain passive leading-edge suction and trailing-edge jet flow to control the unsteady aerodynamic force and modify the flow structure.The Great Belt East Bridge was used as a physical model at a geometric scale of 1:125.Wind tunnel experiments were conducted at an incoming airflow speed of 10 m/s,and the Reynolds number was calculated as 2.3×104 using the test model height and wind speed.The surface pressure distribution was measured,and the aerodynamic force acting on the test model with and without the isolated slit was calculated by integrating the pressure result.It was found that the control using an isolated slit can dramatically decrease the fluctuating surface pressure distribution and aerodynamic force.An analysis on the power spectral density of the lift force revealed that the isolated slit accelerated vortex shedding.Moreover,high-speed particle image velocimetry was used to investigate the wake flow structure behind the test model.A vortex separated from the upper surface was pushed to a lower location and the wake flow structure was modified by the isolated slit.A proper orthogonal decomposition(POD)of the flow field showed that the first two POD modes in the controlled case contributed less energy than those in the uncontrolled case,indicating that more energy was transferred to higher modes,and small-scale vortices had more energy.A secondary instability structure was found in the wake flow for a nondimensional jet momentum coefficient J of 0.0667. 展开更多

Differences in Variations of Long-Lived and Short-Lived Summer Heat Waves during 1981-2020 over Eastern China and Their Corresponding Large-Scale Circulation Anomalies

Using daily maximum temperature(Tmax)data from 516 observation stations in eastern China from 1981 to 2020,this study employed a relative threshold method to define short-and long-lived heat waves(HWs)by considering regional climate differences to investigate the spatial characteristics and evolution of large-scale circulation during summer HWs.The results demonstrated spatial disparities in the frequency distribution of HWs of different durations and differences in the magnitude of duration and intensity between short-and long-lived HWs.Empirical orthogonal function analysis revealed three dominant spatial modes for both short-and long-lived HWs.The first mode showed that short-lived HWs occur prominently in both northern and southern regions,whereas long-lived HWs mainly occur in the northern region.The second mode was characterized by a meridional dipole pattern in both cases.The third mode exhibited a quadrupole pattern for short-lived HWs and a tripole pattern for long-lived HWs.Differences in the center locations of anomalies in the 500-hPa geopotential height and 850-hPa wind fields significantly influenced the temperature and precipitation anomaly distribution of typical HWs by affecting the warm column in the lower troposphere,cloud distribution,and moisture transport.Moreover,the atmospheric circulation evolution processes of typical HWs associated with the different modes of long-and short-lived HWs were linked to distinct teleconnection patterns.During the three modes of long-lived(short-lived)HWs,there was stronger(weaker)wave flux activity with multiple(single)propagation paths.Stronger westward Atlantic wave train activity at 300 hPa triggered the synergistic action of meridional and zonal wave fluxes,favoring the strengthening and maintenance of positive anomalies in geopotential height of 500 hPa.This may have contributed to the formation of long-lived HWs.These findings provide valuable insights to enhance our understanding and prediction of summer HWs. 展开更多
