ZTE Ranked Second Worldwide for International Patent Applications

ZTE announced on February 11 that, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization （WlPO）, it had leapt from 23rd place in 2009 to second place in 2011 in terms of the number of international patent applications submitted. This follows a significant jump in the overall number of international patent applications from China, now the world＇s fourth largest submitter of patent applications.

Scientific Articles and Patent Applications on Biodiesel Production from Lignocellulosic Biomass

This document was conducted to identify trends in research activity (published articles) and technology (patent applications) on the production of biodiesel from lignocellulosic biomass. The Web of Science, Compendex, and Scopus databases were used to retrieve articles and Derwent Innovation was used to search for patent applications;300 articles and 169 patent applications were retrieved. The most common research goals (microbial lipid production, acid pretreatment, and pyrolysis) were identified from an analysis of the author’s keywords. The countries most involved in research are China (96 articles), United States (68), and India (19). The top countries in international partnerships research were United States (22), China (16), and Germany (11). Bioresource Technology (54), Biotechnology for Biofuels (18), and Green Chemistry (13) are the journals with the most published articles. United States (84) is the leader on patent applications, followed by China (15) and Japan (5).

ZTE Sees Sizable Increases in Worldwide Patent Applications in 2009 and Tops China's Patent Application Ranking List

ZTE Corporation has reported that the Patent Protection Association of China （PPAC） recently released patent application rankings for 2009 with ZTE, Huawei and Hongfujin claiming the top three spots on the ranking list.

Application Research of Robust LS-SVM Regression Model in Forecasting Patent Application Counts

A forecasting system of patent application counts is studied in this paper. The optimization model proposed in the research is based on support vector machines （SVM）, in which cross-validation algorithm is used for preferences selection. Results of data simulation show that the proposed method has higher forecasting precision power and stronger generalization ability than BP neural network and RBF neural network. In addi- tion, it is feasible and effective in forecasting patent application counts.

Research on the Status Quo and Countermeasures of Patent Application in Liaoning Biopharmaceutical Industry Based on Patent Map

Objective To study the patent map and the relevant theories of the patent development of biopharmaceutical industry for conducting a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the problems in patent application in Liaoning biopharmaceutical industry.Methods Literature review,information visualization method,empirical analysis method and comparative analysis method were used to research the problems in the patent application.Results and Conclusion While developing biopharmaceutical industry,Liaoning provincial government should strengthen the protection of pharmaceutical patents,creating a new R&D mode of“university+research institutes+enterprises+individuals”to broaden the scope of technical fields.Then,its biopharmaceutical industry will be developed in an all-round way.Besides,it should closely follow the national development direction so that the biopharmaceutical industry in Liaoning Province will have a bright future.

我国4家主要肿瘤专科医院的专利授权现状及对策

目的 回顾我国4家主要肿瘤专科医院2000—2020年的专利授权情况,为提升医院知识产权管理和转化能力提供参考。方法 收集整理4家医院2000—2020年专利授权数据,对专利授权的数量及技术领域、申请人、管理水平等进行分析。结果 2000—2020年4家医院专利授权总量呈上升趋势,授权率差异具有统计学意义(χ^(2)=22.788,P<0.001);专利授权的技术领域各有侧重;大部分专利为医院独立申请;3家医院的大多数专利法律状态良好;3家医院曾发生专利转让授权。结论 我国主要肿瘤医院的专利数量和质量有待提升,在估值方式和转化渠道方面存在障碍。建议从政策、团队、收益分配等多个方面厘顺医院知识产权转化路径,提升专利转化水平。

Patent Application, Grant and Patent Law Amendment in China

This study employs 920,108 invention patents from the State Intellectual Property of China(SIPO)to examine the impact of two patent law amendments,which occurred in 1993 and 2001 respectively,on the patent grant.The first patent law amendment in 1993 led to less strict criteria for patent approval.And the second patent law amendment,which occurred in 2001,showed a similar positive impact on patenting as well.It is more likely that the first patent law amendment encouraged foreign applicants to make patent application,because their applications and grant share started to rise after 1993.By contrast,the second patent law amendment played an opposite role by motivating Chinese applicants to make patent application,which is reflected by a rise of application and grant share by Chinese applicants in post-2001 period.Patent grant is viewed as one of the key indicators for judging the patent value.We find that foreign applicants from the U.S.,Japan and European Union have higher patent grant rate than that of Chinese applicants,suggesting that patents held by foreign applicants may have higher potential value than those held by Chinese applicants.Different types of applicants may differ from each other in terms of the patent grant rate,where research institutes have higher patent grant rate than that of corporations and individuals.Since the filed patents in China can enjoy a provisional protection for 3 years at most,some applicants do not request their examination.After an examination of the novelty,inventiveness and practicality of patent,the patent office determines whether to grant it.By using a bivariate probit model,we make an econometric analysis of this case.The result confirms the positive impact of both patent law amendments in 1993 and 2001 on the patent grant.We also find other determinants of the patent grant,for example,R&D human capital investment,applicant’s competitive technology advantage in the patent’s field,and applicant’s research ability,play positive roles in driving applicant to ask for examination.Patent’s complexity plays a positive role in driving the patent office to grant it.We discuss the significance of our study at the end of this paper.

Family involvement, family member composition and firm innovation

Based on the data of Chinese listed family firms from 2008 to 2016,we investigate the impact of family involvement on firm innovation and the moderating effect of family member composition.The results show that increased family involvement significantly reduces R&D investment intensity and the number of patent applications.With the increased richness of the kinship of family members involved in management,the negative impact of family involvement on patent applications is weakened,but family member composition does not have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between family involvement and R&D investment intensity.Further analysis shows that the number of invention patent applications decreases as the degree of family involvement increases,but family involvement has no significant effect on utility model patent and design patent applications.Family member composition has a significant moderating effect on the relationship between family involvement and invention patent applications.The results have value as a reference for exploring how family involvement affects firm innovation and can also help the actual controller to take effective measures to optimize family member composition and improve the innovation performance of family firms.
