This region is vulnerable to drought and is projected to experience a drier climate in the future. Since the interannual variability in climate in this region is linked to an ocean-atmospheric phenomenon, called El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), droughts in this region may be associated with ENSO. Droughts that occur during the critical growth phases of wheat can be extremely costly. However, the losses due to an impending drought can be minimized through mitigation measures if it is predicted in advance. Predicting the yield loss from an imminent drought is crucial for stakeholders. One of the reliable ways for such prediction is using a plant physiology-based agricultural drought index, such as Agricultural Reference Index for Drought (ARID). This study developed ENSO phase-specific, ARID-based models for predicting the drought-induced yield loss for winter wheat in this region by accounting for its phenological phase-specific sensitivity to drought. The reasonable values of the drought sensitivity coefficients of the yield model for each ENSO phase (El Niño, La Niña, or Neutral) indicated that the yield models reflected reasonably well the phenomena of water stress decreasing the winter wheat yields in this region during different ENSO phases. The values of various goodness-of-fit measures used, including the Nash-Sutcliffe Index (0.54 to 0.67), the Willmott Index (0.82 to 0.89), and the percentage error (20 to 26), indicated that the yield models performed fairly well at predicting the ENSO phase-specific loss of wheat yields from drought. This yield model may be useful for predicting yield loss from drought and scheduling irrigation allocation based on the phenological phase-specific sensitivity to drought as impacted by ENSO.展开更多

For high PWM(pulse width modulation) frequency like in elevator applications of fpwm =10kHz,switching losses are dominant and are about 2/3 of the total losses on IGBT switch.Transition from continuous 3 phase to discontinuous 2 phase PWM results in 50% reduction of switching loses on IGBT devices providing that PWM is not done over 60deg angle in a particular phase when current has maximum value.Total losses on IGBT(conduction + switching) are reduced approximately by ~1/3 what is still a significant reduction. Two phase PWM with reduced losses can be used for applications when acoustic noise due to increased current ripple is not significant and fall back solution to regular 3 phase PWM when drive operates under rare extreme conditions resulting in increased heat sink temperature. The analysis will be examined by further laboratory testing simulating 60% duty cycle on a dynamometer.展开更多

Early pregnant ewes were used to monitor effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an endotoxin in the outer cell membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, on acute phase/innate immunity response. In Exp. 1, mixed breed ewes were assigned to receive either LPS or LPS and flunixin meglumine, an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthetase, intravenously on day 5 after mating. In Exp. 2, mixed breed ewes were assigned to receive an intravenous injection on day 5 after mating of either saline, LPS, recombinant human tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α or LPS after pretreatment with dexamethasone. Pregnancy was diagnosed ultrasonographically on d 25, and live births were recorded at parturition. Challenge with LPS induced acute phase responses (fever, mucosal responses, lethargy and increased serum TNF, haptoglobin and?serum amyloid A) and decreased pregnancy rates. Predictably, flunixin meglumine attenuated fever but did not increase pregnancy rate in LPS-treated ewes. Similarly, exogenous TNF alone induced mucosal and serum amyloid A responses but did not affect pregnancy. Pre-treatment with dexamethasone blocked fever and mucosal and lethargic responses and attenuated increases in TNF and haptoglobin but did not ameliorate LPS-induced pregnancy loss. In summary, acute challenge with LPS mimics bacterial-induced pregnancy losses in early pregnant ewes. Although pretreatment with dexamethasone decreased clinical signs and some innate immune responses, neither it nor flunixin meglumine prevented LPS-induced pregnancy loss. That exogenous TNF alone did not promote pregnancy loss indicates that other cytokines also contribute to LPS-induced embryonic loss.展开更多

Reducing gear churning power losses has significant influence on the decreasing vehicle fuel consumption. Based on the two phase flow theory, a 2D two-phase model of the simplified hypoid gear is established to predict the churning losses in different conditions, the VOF method is introduced to track the volume fraction of the free surface, a standard k-ε model is also built to calculate complex turbulence. The oil distributions at the different rotational speed, the different immersion depth and the different viscosity as well as the churning losses of the hypoid gear are obtained and discussed in detail. In general, the churning power losses increase with the increase of the speed, the immersion depth and the viscosity, while the rotational speed shows the greatest influence on the churning losses. It is hoped that this investigation will be helpful in automotive industry applications.展开更多

Analyze the intermetallic phases formed on the H13 samples surface with optical microscope and X-ray diffraction method. The observation of immersion test sample’s cross-section shows that Fe3O4 film will protect die substrate from molten aluminum erosion. The identification of the intermetallic phases reveals that they consist of 2 parts, which is named as the composite layer and the compact layer. Further investigations are made in order to know the phase constituents of the 2 layers, they are A18Fe2Si (outer composite layer), (AlCuMg) and A15Fe2 (compact layer), respectively. The experimental results show that on the same specimen, a convex surface with bigger radius of curvature is more likely to be molten and the melting loss speed is also faster than a flat and smooth surface. The thickness of compact layer on a smooth surface is much bigger than that of the convex surface. Therefore, the author supposes the compact layer is favorable in stabilizing the die surface material from further melting loss, as their formation on the die surface, the melting loss speed will decrease.展开更多
