An increase in lipid peroxidation, hemolysis and thiol content was observed after phenylhydrazine treatment of erythrocyte. Extracellular Ca2+ potentiates the phenylhydrazine-induced lipid peroxidation and hemoly- sis of erythrocytes significantly. Ca2+ does not influence much the thiol content of phenylhydrazine treated erythrocytes. No effect of Ca2+ on control lipid peroxidation, hemolysis and thiol contents of erythrocytes was observed. Diltiazem and EDTA inhibited the increased responses of lipid peroxidation and hemolysis due to Ca2+. However the thiol content was not much influenced by either diltiazem or EDTA. The results suggest that oxidative damage of erythrocyte caused by phenyl hydrazine could be prevented by calcium channel antagonist, diltiazem, which may act as antioxidant also.展开更多

Their structures were confirmed by IH NMR, 13C NMR and MS. The half effective concentration (ECs0) values of the title compounds against the phytopathogenic fungi Rhizoctonia cerealis were evaluated. Com- pounds 61 and 6q displayed good bioactivity with EC50 values of 1.626 and 2.043 μg/mL, respectively. The 3D quantitative structure activity relationship(3D-QSAR) model of CoMFA was established with reliable cross-validated correlation coefficient q2 value of 0.585 and Noncross-validated correlation coefficient r2 value of 0.971. This model provided a tool for guiding further design and synthesis of novel pyrrolidine-2,4-dione derivatives with high fungicidal activity.展开更多

The effect of extracts of Justicia secunda leaves on red blood cells (RBC) count and haemoglobin (Hb) concentration was investigated in adult Sprague-Dawley rats to establish haematinic activity. Phenylhydrazine (PHZ)-induced anaemic rats were treated with water, methanol or ethyl acetate extracts at 200 mg/kg body weight. RBC counts and Hb concentration were analysed using a haematology analyser at 3-day intervals for 21 days. The extracts were compared with rats administered the haematinic tonic Feroglobin®?and vehicle-treated (normal saline). Rats administered the water extract exhibited the most significant increase (P ) in the number of RBCs and Hb concentration compared with the vehicle-treated PHZ-induced anaemic rats. Rats administered the methanol extract followed with significant increase (P ) in RBC counts and Hb concentration (J. secunda leaves has excellent haematinic properties and this provides the pharmacological basis of its use in Ghanaian traditional medicine for the treatment of anaemia.展开更多

Work done on aqueous extract of the unripe C. papaya in an acute oral toxicity study in rats showed the LD50 to be 2,520 mg/kg in rats. Current study evaluated the bilirubin-lowering potential of ACP extract in phenylhydrazine (40 mg/kg) induced jaundice in adult rats. Method: Jaundice was assessed by measuring the levels of TB (total bilirubin) and DB (direct bilirubin) in phenylhydrazine-treated animals with or without drug treatment, with CUR (curative), PRO (prophylactic study), and in animals with RLC (reduced liver capacity). Results: Result demonstrated that TB level of 24.0 μmols/L, 22.0 μmols/L and 45.0 μmols/L in the jaundiced group of the CUR, PRO and RLC respectively was significantly lowered (p 〈 0.05) to 10.0, 13.0, and 17.0 respectively by 400 mg/kg of the extract. Total bilirubin level of 24.0 btmols/L, 22.0 lamols/L and 45.0 μmols/L in the jaundiced group of the CUR, PRO and RLC respectively was significantly lowered (p 〈 0.05) to 7.0, 10.0, and 17.0 respectively by 800 mg/kg extract. Conclusion: The study concluded that ACP fruit extract has ability to lower elevated bilirubin level and confer hepatoprotective effect as seen from the liver function test indices thus justifying its ethnomedicinal use.展开更多

The measurements of deformation index, orientation index, electrophoresis mobility etc. were performed for more than 72 h in the process of reticulocytes turning into red blood cells in vivo. There were obvious changes in the micro- rheological characteristics of reticulocytes in the course of turning into erythrocytes. The present study is significant in clinic for studying erythrocytes' microrheological characteristics when there are a lot of reticulocytes in blood, and also important in basic theorem for studying reticulocytes microrheological characteristics. It makes up a deficiency in the study on microrheological characteristics of reticulocytes turning into new RBCs from reticulocytes during reticulocytes life span.展开更多
