Low-molecular-weight(LMW) organic acids widely exist in soils, particularly in the rhizosphere. A series of batch experiments were carried out to investigate the phosphorus release from rock phosphate and iron phosphate by low-molecular-weight organic acids. Results showed that citric acid had the highest capacity to solubilize P from both rock and iron phosphate. P solubilization from rock phosphate and iron phosphate resulted in net proton consumption. P release from rock phosphate was positively correlated with the p K _a values. P release from iron phosphate was positively correlated with Fe-organic acid stability constants except for aromatic acids, but was not correlated with p K _a. Increase in the concentrations of organic acids enhanced P solubilization from both rock and iron phosphate almost linearly. Addition of phenolic compounds further increased the P release from iron phosphate. Initial solution pH had much more substantial effect on P release from rock phosphate than from iron phosphate. 展开更多

Intact sediment cores and wet/dried surficial sediments sampled from the two sublakes in Taihu Lake, Meiliang Bay and Wuli Lake, were incubated in the laboratory to determine the effects of resuspension on internal phosphorus loading by simulating different resuspension events. Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) release from undisturbed core sediment sampled in the Meiliang Bay and Wuli Lake in July 1998 was 1.53 mg/m(2) and 2.24 mg/m(2) within 4 days, respectively. However during one hour experimental simulation of resuspension, SRP increased by 0.041 mg/L and 0.077 mg/L in die above cores, which indicate that a typical resuspension event in the take would be accompanied by the release of 10.77 mgSRP/m(2) and 23.1 mgSRP/m(2), respectively. The internal phosphorus loading induced by resuspensian is estimated to be 8 - 10 times greater than the release from undisturbed sediment. SRP release from the dried sediments during simulation of resuspension was mainly dependent on the disturbing intensity. Only when the wind strength gets to certain level, the influence of wind speed on phosphorus release appears significant, indicating that an exchangeable P pool, capable of altering equilibrium conditions in the take areas, is built up under strongly wind-exposed resuspension events. 展开更多

The sediment distributed and insolated under lake was collected for experiments. The nutrient layer distribution conditions of sampled sediment and its physical and chemical characteristics were analyzed to simulate and assess the influence degree to lake water quality. Based on the dynamic water exchanging experiments the nutrient release process in sediment and influence mechanism to substance exchanging on water-sediment interface was studied, and the correlation between the changing content of total phosphors and total nitrogen in sediment and covered water were analyzed for setting up a simulation model. At the same time the influence degree is explained in detail. The experimental results indicated that even if clean water without nutrient contents was used for water exchangement so as to decrease pollution or prevent eutrophication, however owing to the vertical nutrient distribution in lake sediment, it will lead to the increasing release amount greatly especially when the organic nutrient contained in sediment turns into inorganic status because of isolation. Besides the release process of total phosphate (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) were modeled and each nutrient's exchanging equation at interface caused by covered water nutrient concentration changing was set up. According to the simulating prediction, TP and TN content of cover water will also sustain a steady higher level in a long period. The nutrient release amount of sediment is not only affected by the covered water concentration but also connects with accumulative time. The experiments provide the fundamental theoretical and practical basis for taking ecological restoration project. And research is helpful to prevent or restore lake eutrophication. 展开更多

Two full-scale systems operated in parallel, a conventional A2/O system consisting of anaerobic, anoxic and oxic compartments in succession and an inverted system consisting of anoxic, anaerobic and oxic compartments without internal recycle, were compared in terms of their phosphorus removal performance, with an emphasis on phosphate (P) release behaviors, using both operational data and simulation results. The inverted system exhibited better long-term phosphorus removal performance (0.2 ± 0.3 vs. 0.7 ±0.7 mg/L), which should be attributed to the higher P release rate (0.79 vs. 0.60 kg P/(kg MLSS.day)) in the non-aerated compartments. The P release occurred in both the anoxic and anaerobic compartments of the inverted system, resulting in more efficient P release. Although the abundances of the 'Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis' population in the two systems were quite similar ((19.1 + 3.27)% and (18.4 + 4.15)% of the total microbe (DAPI stained particles) population in the inverted and conventional systems, respectively, by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)), the high-concentration DAPI staining results show that the abundances of the whole polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) in the aerobic ends were quite different (the average ratios of the poly-P granules to total microbes (DAPI stained particles) were (45 ±4.18)% and (35 ± 5.39)%, respectively). Both the operational data and simulation results showed that the inverted system retained more abundant PAO populations due to its special configuration, which permitted efficient P release in the non-aerated compartment and better P removal, 展开更多

Internal pollution released from reservoir sediments is the main cause of water quality problems. To mitigate the internal pollution more effectively, a new method, which combined chemical stabilization with water lifting aerator (WLA) technology, was proposed and its effciency in inhibiting pollutant release was studied by controlled sediment-water interface experiments. The results showed that this new method can inhibit pollutant release from sediment effectively. The values of mean effciency (E) in different reactors 2#–5# (1# with no agent, 2# 10 mg/L polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) was added, 3# 20 mg/L PAC was added, 4# 30 mg/L PAC was added, 5# 20 mg/L PAC and 0.2 mg/L palyacrylamide (PAM) were added) for PO43- were 35.0%, 43.9%, 50.4% and 63.6%, respectively. This showed that the higher the PAC concentration was, the better the inhibiting effciency was, and PAM addition strengthened the inhibiting effciency significantly. For Fe2+, the corresponding values of E for the reactors 2#–5# were 22.9%, 47.2%, 34.3% and 46.2%, respectively. The inhibiting effect of PAC and PAM on Mn release remained positive for a relatively short time, about 10 days, and was not so effective as for PO43- and Fe2+. The average effciencies in inhibiting the release of UV254 were 35.3%, 25.9%, 35.5%, 38.9% and 39.5% for reactors 2#–5#, respectively. The inhibiting mechanisms of the agents for different pollutants varied among the conditions and should be studied further. 展开更多
