This paper explores a novel approach to structural repair by utilizing piezoelectric actuators. The primary focus of this study is to investigate the influence of an adhesively bonded piezoelectric actuator patch placed above a circular hole on the stress intensity factor (SIF) in an aluminium plate. The plate is subjected to uniaxial tensile stress, while the piezoelectric actuator is excited with varying voltage levels. The analysis is conducted using the finite element method (FEM), a powerful numerical technique for simulating complex structures. The study assesses the stress distribution and employs the SIF as an adequate criterion for evaluating the impact of different patch configurations. The results indicate a strong correlation between the applied voltage and the SIF. Whether the SIF increases or decreases depends on the polarization of the piezoelectric actuator. Particularly noteworthy is the finding that rectangular patches in a horizontal orientation significantly reduce the SIF compared to other patch geometries. Moreover, double-sided patches exhibit a pronounced decrease in the SIF compared to single-sided patches. In summary, this research underscores the potential of piezoelectric actuators in mitigating stress intensity in structures with circular hole with crack initiation. It offers valuable insights into the influence of applied voltage, patch geometry, and patch placement on the SIF, thereby contributing to developing effective strategies for enhancing structural integrity.展开更多

文摘The dynamic responses and generated voltage in a curved sandwich beam with glass reinforced laminate(GRL)layers and a pliable core in the presence of a piezoelectric layer under low-velocity impact(LVI)are investigated. The current study aims to carry out a dynamic analysis on the sandwich beam when the impactor hits the top face sheet with an initial velocity. For the layer analysis, the high-order shear deformation theory(HSDT)and Frostig's second model for the displacement fields of the core layer are used. The classical non-adhesive elastic contact theory and Hunter's principle are used to calculate the dynamic responses in terms of time.In order to validate the analytical method, the outcomes of the current investigation are compared with those gained by the experimental tests carried out by other researchers for a rectangular composite plate subject to the LVI.Finite element(FE)simulations are conducted by means of the ABAQUS software. The effects of the parameters such as foam modulus, layer material, fiber angle, impactor mass, and its velocity on the generated voltage are reviewed.

文摘Piezoelectric semiconductors(PSs)possess both semiconducting properties and piezoelectric coupling effects, making them optimal building blocks for semiconductor devices.PS fiber-like structures have wide applications in multi-functional semiconductor devices. In this paper,a one-dimensional(1D)theoretical model is established to describe the piezotronic responses of a PS fiber under gradient temperature changes. The theoretical model aims to explain the mechanism behind the resistance change caused by such gradient temperature changes.Numerical results demonstrate that a gradient temperature change significantly affects the physical fields within the PS fiber, and can induce changes in its surface resistance. It provides important theoretical guidance on the development of piezotronic devices that are sensitive to temperature effects.
文摘Na_(0.5)Bi_(0.5)TiO_(3)-based lead-free piezoelectrics are considered for potential replacement of the lead-based commercial piezoceramics in high-power transducer applications. We have examined the role of grain size in influencing the structural-polar inhomogeneity of stoichiometric and off-stoichiometric Na_(0.5)Bi_(0.5)TiO_(3)(NBT),and its morphotropic-phase-boundary(MPB)derivative 0.94Na_(0.5)Bi_(0.5)TiO_(3)-0.06BaTiO_(3)(NBT-6BT).Our study reveals that size effect comes into play in these systems on a very large length scale(on the scale of microns)considerably affecting its global structure and properties.

文摘In the last few years, there has been tremendous effort to develop lead-free ferroelectric ceramics with high piezoelectric properties by various doping and alloying routes.Several material systems have been explored, however,no prominent alternative to the versatile lead zirconate titanate(PZT)system has been found yet.Despite the achieved improvement in piezoelectric properties, there are problems in the synthesis, processing and poling of the sintered ceramics.Various processing techniques including microwave, hydrothermal, solgel,Pechini and spark plasma sintering have been used to overcome the drawbacks related to synthesis issues. In this paper,an attempt is made to review recent developments on lead-free piezo materials emphasizing their preparation, structureproperty relations, and consequent physical properties. In this context, both compositional and structural engineering approaches to achieve acceptable piezoelectric properties in lead-free materials are discussed.Piezoelectric properties of the most promising lead-free compositions/families including titanates, alkaline niobates and bismuth perovskites and their solid solutions, along with non-perovskites such as bismuth layer-structured ferroelectrics are reviewed in detail.A brief coverage of the recent developments in the area of piezoelectric energy harvesting is also encompassed.
文摘Circular holes are commonly employed in engineering designs;however, they often serve as locations where cracks initiate and propagate. It offers valuable insights into the influence of applied voltage, patch geometry, and patch placement on the SIF, thereby contributing to developing effective strategies for enhancing structural integrity.

文摘Recent advances in ubiquitous low-power electronics call for the development of light-weight and flexible energy sources. The textile format is highly attractive for unobtrusive harvesting of energy from e.g.,biomechanical movements. Here,we report the manufacture and characterisation of fully textile piezoelectric generators that can operate under wet conditions. We use a weaving loom to realise textile bands with yarns of melt-spun piezoelectric microfibres, that consist of a conducting core surrounded byβ-phase poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF),in the warp direction. The core-sheath constitution of the piezoelectric microfibres results in a—for electronic textiles—unique architecture. The inner electrode is fully shielded from the outer electrode(made up of conducting yarns that are integrated in the weft direction)which prevents shorting under wet conditions. As a result, and in contrast to other energy harvesting textiles,we are able to demonstrate piezoelectric fabrics that do not only continue to function when in contact with water, but show enhanced performance. The piezoelectric bands generate an output of several volts at strains below one percent. We show that integration into the shoulder strap of a laptop case permits the continuous generation of four microwatts of power during a brisk walk. This promising performance, combined with the fact that our solution uses scalable materials and well-established industrial manufacturing methods, opens up the possibility to develop wearable electronics that are powered by piezoelectric textiles.

文摘One of the major problems limiting the applications of electric double-layer(EDLC)supercapacitor devices is their inability to maintain their cell voltage over a significant period.Self-discharge is a spontaneous decay in charged energy, often resulting in fully depleted devices in a matter of hours. Here,a new method for suppressing this self-discharge phenomenon is proposed by using directionally polarized piezoelectric electrospun nanofiber films as separator materials.Tailored engineering of polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)nanofiber films containing a small concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)results in a high proportion of polarβphases, reaching 380.5%of the total material.Inducing polarity into the separator material provides a reverse-diode mechanism in the device, such that it drops from an initial voltage of 1.6 down to 1 V after 10 h,as opposed to 0.3 V with a nonpolarized, commercial separator material. Thus, the energy retained for the polarized separator is 37%and 4%for the nonpolarized separator, making supercapacitors a more attractive solution for long-term energy storage.

文摘This study investigates the size-dependent wave propagation behaviors under the thermoelectric loads of porous functionally graded piezoelectric(FGP) nanoplates deposited in a viscoelastic foundation. It is assumed that(i) the material parameters of the nanoplates obey a power-law variation in thickness and(ii) the uniform porosity exists in the nanoplates. The combined effects of viscoelasticity and shear deformation are considered by using the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model and the refined higher-order shear deformation theory. The scale effects of the nanoplates are captured by employing nonlocal strain gradient theory(NSGT).The motion equations are calculated in accordance with Hamilton’s principle. Finally, the dispersion characteristics of the nanoplates are numerically determined by using a harmonic solution. The results indicate that the nonlocal parameters(NLPs) and length scale parameters(LSPs) have exactly the opposite effects on the wave frequency. In addition,it is found that the effect of porosity volume fractions(PVFs) on the wave frequency depends on the gradient indices and damping coefficients. When these two values are small, the wave frequency increases with the volume fraction.By contrast,at larger gradient index and damping coefficient values, the wave frequency decreases as the volume fraction increases.

文摘Graphitic carbon nitride(g-C_(3)N_(4))is viewed as a promising visible-light photocatalyst for industrialization due to its low processing temperature and high chemical stability. However, serious charge recombination caused by incomplete polymerization during direct calcination of nitrogen-rich precursors significantly limits its photocatalytic performances. To boost charge separation, herein,we propose a rational strategy by constructing a crystalline g-C_(3)N_(4)/g-C_(3)N_(4-x)S_(x) isotype heterostructure through the molten salt method.Theoretical calculation reveals that apparent charge-transfer channels are formed between g-C_(3)N_(4) and S-doped g-C_(3)N_(4) layers in the heterostructure.Owing to high crystallinity for decreasing charge recombination and isotype heterostructure for efficient charge transfer, the as-prepared g-C_(3)N_(4)/g-C_(3)N_(4-x)S_(x) showed remarkable photocatalytic performances with the hydrogen production rate elevated by up to 12.3 times of its singular components.Another novelty of this work is we investigated for the first time the piezocatalytic activity of crystalline g-C_(3)N_(4) by characterizing its performance for H2O2 generation and KMnO4 reduction.Strikingly, its superior piezocatalytic performance over components can be further improved by NaBH4 treatment, which is uncovered to enhance the asymmetric structure of crystalline g-C_(3)N_(4) by introducing extra cyano groups and removing partial NHx species in its tri-s-triazine layer structure. This work opens up new strategies for the design of highly efficient polymeric photocatalysts and highlights the piezocatalytic studies of g-C_(3)N_(4).

文摘Sandwiched functionally-graded piezoelectric semiconductor(FGPS)plates possess high strength and excellent piezoelectric and semiconductor properties, and have significant potential applications in micro-electro-mechanical systems. The multi-field coupling and free vibration of a sandwiched FGPS plate are studied, and the governing equation and natural frequency are derived with the consideration of electron movement. The material properties in the functionally-graded layers are assumed to vary smoothly, and the first-order shear deformation theory is introduced to derive the multi-field coupling in the plate. The total strain energy of the plate is obtained, and the governing equations are presented by using Hamilton’s principle.By introducing the boundary conditions, the coupling physical fields are solved. In numerical examples, the natural frequencies of sandwiched FGPS plates under different geometrical and physical parameters are discussed. It is found that the initial electron density can be used to modulate the natural frequencies and vibrational displacement of sandwiched FGPS plates in the case of nano-size.The effects of the material properties of FGPS layers on the natural frequencies are also examined in detail.
