We report polarization reversal periodically controlled by the electric field in multiferroic MnWO_(4) with a pulsed field up to 52 T.The electric polarization cannot be reversed by successive opposite electric fields in low magnetic fields(<14 T)at 4.2 K,whereas polarization reversal is directly achieved by two opposite electric fields under high magnetic fields(<45 T).Interestingly,the polarization curve of rising and falling fields for H∥u(magnetic easy axis)is irreversible when the magnetic field is close to 52 T.In this case,the rising and falling polarization curves can be individually reversed by the electric field,and thus require five cycles to recover to the initial condition by the order of the applied electric fields(+E,-E,-E,+E,+E).In addition,we find that ferroelectric phaseⅣcan be tuned from parallel to antiparallel in relation to ferroelectric phase AF2 by applying a magnetic field approximated to the c axis. 展开更多

By using one-dimensional tight-binding model modified to include electron-electric field interaction and electron-electron interaction,we theoretically explore the polarization process of exciton and biexciton in cis-polyacetylene.The dynamical simulation is performed by adopting the non-adiabatic evolution approach.The results show that under the effect of moderate electric field,when the strength of electron-electron interaction is weak,the singlet exciton is stable but its polarization presents obvious oscillation.With the enhancement of interaction,it is dissociated into polaron pairs,the spin-flip of which can be observed through modulating the interaction strength.For the triplet exciton,the strong electron-electron interaction restrains its normal polarization,but it is still stable.In the case of biexciton,the strong electron-electron interaction not only dissociate it,but also flip its charge distribution.The yield of the possible states formed after the dissociation of exciton and biexciton is also calculated. 展开更多

Interracial resistive switching of a ferroelectric semiconductor heterojunction is highly advantageous for the newly developed ferroelectric memristors. Moreover, the interfacial state in the ferroelectric semiconductor heterojunction can be gradually modified by polarization reversal, which may give rise to continuously tunable resistive switching behavior. In this work, the interfacial state of a ferroelectric BiFeO3/Nb-doped SrTiO3 junction was modulated by ferroelectric polarization reversal. The dynamics of surface screening charges on the BiFeO3 layer was also investigated by surface potential measure- ments, and the decay of the surface potential could be speeded up by the magnetic field. Moreover, ferroelectric polarization reversal of the BiFeO3 layer was tuned by the magnetic field. This finding could provide a method to enhance the ferroelectric and electrical properties of ferroelectric BiFeO3 films by tuning the magnetic field. 展开更多

Methods The transient process of polarity reversal is analyzed, considering the anisotropic property of oil immersed press board, a new finite element model based on Galerkin method is presented and verified. The model developed is applied to calculate the electric field distribution in four typical winding end structures of the converter transformer. Results\ The whole ring structure possesses the best insulation characteristics. Conclusion\ By introducing reasonable insulation components, insulation strength with the same surrounding sizes can be improved more than 30%. 展开更多

Electromagnetic ion cyclotron(EMIC)waves are widely believed to play an important role in influencing the radiation belt and ring current dynamics.Most studies have investigated the effects or characteristics of EMIC waves by assuming their left-handed polarization.However,recent studies have found that the reversal of polarization,which occurs at higher latitudes along the wave propagation path,can change the wave-induced pitch angle diffusion coefficients.Whether such a polarization reversal can influence the global ring current dynamics remains unknown.In this study,we investigate the ring current dynamics and proton precipitation loss in association with polarization-reversed EMIC waves by using the ring current-atmosphere interactions model(RAM).The results indicate that the polarization reversal of H-band EMIC waves can truly decrease the scattering rates of protons of 10 to 50 keV or>100 keV in comparison with the scenario in which the EMIC waves are considered purely left-handed polarized.Additionally,the global ring current intensity and proton precipitation may be slightly affected by the polarization reversal,especially during prestorm time and the recovery phase,but the effects are not large during the main phase.This is probably because the H-band EMIC waves contribute to the proton scattering loss primarily at E<10 keV,an energy range that is not strongly affected by the polarization reversal. 展开更多

It is generally acknowledged that geomagnetic polarity has reversed many times in geological history and an abnormal geologic phenomenon is the Cretaceous normal superchron. However, the causes have been unknown up to now. The nonlinear theory has been applied to analyze the phenomenon in geomagnetic polarity reversal and the Cretaceous normal superchron. The Cretaceous normal superchron implies that interaction of the Earth's core-mantle and liquid movement in the outer core may be the lowest energy state and the system of Earth magnetic field maintains a sort of temporal or spatial order structure by exchanging substance and energy in the outside continuously. During 121-83 Ma, there was no impact of a celestial body that would result in a geomagnetic polarity reversal, which may be a cause for occurrence of the Cretaceous normal superchron.The randomness of geomagnetic polarity reversal has the self-reversion characteristic of chaos and the chaos theory gives a simple and clear explanation for the dynamic cause of the geomagnetic polarity reversal. 展开更多

The Tibetan Plateau is an important area for studying global climate change,but the answers to many scientific problems remain unknown.Here,we present new information from the lacustrine sedimentary record in the western Tibetan Plateau,related to the third most-recent glaciations.Continuous sediment data,including sporopollen,particle size,total organic carbon,mass susceptibility,CaCO_(3),CaSO_(4),BaSO_(4)contents and chronological data,were reconstructed and revealed that climate and environmental conditions obviously and distinctly changed between 600 and 700 thousand years ago.In comparison,the data obtained from the Guliya ice core in this area also corresponds to the global glacial climatic characteristics recorded in basin sediments in the eastern and southeastern regions of the plateau and to the information obtained from ice cores in the Antarctic and Arctic regions.In this study,we conclude that the main reason for the glaciations and new tectonic movement must be a geomagnetic polarity reversal 774 thousand years ago(from Matuyama to Brunhes).Indeed,the results of this study suggest that the described reversal event might have influenced the current global climate pattern and will continue to impact climatic changes in the future. 展开更多

Results of experimental investigation of detection (rectification) of high power X-band microwave signal in diodes of various design (semiconductor p-n-junction, point-contact, Schottky, Metal-Isolator-Metal—MIM) are reported. The maximum of the detected direct voltage V vs. power P of microwave signal and subsequent polarity reversal, previously found in MIM diodes in the optical and microwave bands, have found to be characteristic of all investigated diodes as well. After the reversal of polarity, this dependence comes linear, and the sign of the voltage corresponds to thermoEMF. In some diodes, the hysteresis on V(P) was observed. All 5 types of V(P) of MIM diodes (have made from different pairs of metals), reported earlier, were reproduced on same p-n-junction diode by variable external DC bias. These results joined with abnormal frequency cutoff forced to suggest that there is an unknown mechanism for direct flow of charge carriers (and for generate direct current) in the high-frequency electrical field, which differs from the conventional rectification. 展开更多

Tactile perception plays a vital role for the human body and is also highly desired for smart prosthesis and advanced robots.Compared to active sensing devices,passive piezoelectric and triboelectric tactile sensors consume less power,but lack the capability to resolve static stimuli.Here,we address this issue by utilizing the unique polarization chemistry of conjugated polymers for the first time and propose a new type of bioinspired,passive,and bio-friendly tactile sensors for resolving both static and dynamic stimuli.Specifically,to emulate the polarization process of natural sensory cells,conjugated polymers(including poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophen e):poly(styrenesulfonate),polyaniline,or polypyrrole)are controllably polarized into two opposite states to create artificial potential differences.The controllable and reversible polarization process of the conjugated polymers is fully in situ characterized.Then,a micro-structured ionic electrolyte is employed to imitate the natural ion channels and to encode external touch stimulations into the variation in potential difference outputs.Compared with the currently existing tactile sensing devices,the developed tactile sensors feature distinct characteristics including fully organic composition,high sensitivity(up to 773 mV N^(−1)),ultralow power consumption(nW),as well as superior bio-friendliness.As demonstrations,both single point tactile perception(surface texture perception and material property perception)and two-dimensional tactile recognitions(shape or profile perception)with high accuracy are successfully realized using self-defined machine learning algorithms.This tactile sensing concept innovation based on the polarization chemistry of conjugated polymers opens up a new path to create robotic tactile sensors and prosthetic electronic skins. 展开更多

Objective: Mucin 1(MUC1/EMA) and sialyl Lewis X(sLe^(x)) indicate polarity reversal in invasive micropapillary carcinoma(IMPC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the expression of MUC1/EMA and sLe^(x) and to assess their diagnostic and prognostic value in patients with IMPC.Methods: The expression of sLe^(x) and MUC1/EMA in 100 patients with IMPC and a control group of 89 patients with invasive ductal carcinoma not otherwise specified(IDC-NOS) were analyzed with IHC. Fresh tumor tissues were collected from patients with IMPC or IDC-NOS for primary culture and immunofluorescence analysis.Results: The rate of nodal metastasis was higher in patients with IMPC than those with IDC-NOS, and IMPC cells tended to express more sLe^(x) and MUC1/EMA in the cytomembranes(the stroma-facing surfaces of the micropapillary clusters) than IDC-NOS cells. In IMPC, high cytomembrane expression of sLe^(x), but not MUC1/EMA, indicated poor prognosis. In addition, among the 100 patients with IMPC, 10 patients had sLe^(x)+/EMA-expression patterns, and 8 patients had sLe^(x)-/EMA+ expression patterns. The primary IMPC cells were suspended, non-adherent tumor cell clusters, whereas the primary IDC cells were adherent tumor cells. Immunofluorescence analysis showed that MUC1/EMA and sLe^(x) were co-expressed on the cytomembranes in IMPC cell clusters and in the cytoplasm in IDC-NOS cells.Conclusions: sLe^(x) can be used as a prognostic indicator and can be combined with MUC1/EMA as a complementary diagnostic indicator to avoid missed IMPC diagnosis. 展开更多

Using the mesoscale eddy trajectory atlas product derived from satellite altimeter data from 1993 to 2016,this study analyzes statistical characteristics and seasonal variability of mesoscale eddies in the Banda Sea of the Indonesian seas.The results show that there were 147 mesoscale eddies that occurred in the Banda Sea,of which 137 eddies were locally generated and 10 originated from outside.The total numbers of cyclonic eddies(CEs,clockwise)and anticyclonic eddies(AEs,anticlockwise)are 76 and 71,respectively.Seasonally,the number of CEs(AEs)is twice larger than the number of AEs(CEs)in winter(summer).In winter,CEs are distributed in the southern and AEs in the northern basins,respectively,but the opposite thing occurs in summer,i.e.,the polarities of mesoscale eddies observed at the same location reverse seasonally.The mechanisms of polarity distribution reversal(PDR)of mesoscale eddies are examined with reanalysis data of ocean currents and winds.The results indicate that the basin-scale vorticity,wind stress curl,and the meridional shear of zonal current reverse seasonally,which are favorable to the PDR of mesoscale eddies.The possible generation mechanisms of mesoscale eddies include direct wind forcing,barotropic and baroclinic instabilities,of which the direct wind forcing should play the dominant role. 展开更多

The bare copper electrode was firstly anodic polarized in 1.0 mol/L NaOH solution in order to get CuxO nanoparticles, then the carboxyl graphene (CG) was electrodeposited on the CuxO/Cu electrode by cyclic potential sweeping. The electrocatalytic oxidation behaviors of calcium folinate (CF) at the graphene modified CuxO/Cu electrode were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. A positive scan polarization reverse catalytic voltammetry was used to obtain the pure catalytic oxidation current. The graphene modified CuxO/Cu electrode was served as the electrochemical sensor of CF, a highly sensitivity of 22.0μA.(μmol/μL)^-1cm^-2 was achieved, and the current response was linear with increasing CF concentration in the range of 2.0×10^-7 mol/L to 2.0×10^-5 mol/L, which crossed three orders of magnitude, and the detection limit was found 7.6×10^-5 mol/L (S/N=3). In addition, the proposed sensor was successfully applied in determination of CF in drug sample. 展开更多

The presence of the reversals of the geomagnetic field within the Brunhes is indicated by paleomagnetic stuides on Cenozoic volcanic rocks in the Leizhou Peninsula, loess strata and Quaternary marine sediments in the Pearl River Mouth basin in China. These regional reversals occured at 0.58±0.13 Ma, 0.45 Ma and 0.47—0.48 Ma respectively according to the results of K-Ar isotopic dating and climatostratigraphic and biostratigraphic analyses. The reversals equivalent to the Emperor Event is suggested.The reversals revealed in different regions with various lithologic characters in China prove that the Emperor Event is a global reversal event rather than a geomagnetic excursion, and its confirmation will permit a precise definition of the Middle/Late Pleistocene boundary. 展开更多

Umpolung reactions of C=X bonds(X=O,N)are valuable ways of constructing new C–C bonds,which are sometimes difficult to be constructed using traditional synthetic pathways.Classical polarity inversion of C=X bonds(X=O,N)usually requires air or moisture‐sensitive and strong reducing agents,which limit the feasibility of substrate scope.Herein we describe a photo‐induced reductive cross‐coupling reaction of aldehydes,ketones and imines with electron‐deficient arenes(aromatic nitriles)using fac‐Ir(ppy)3as a photocatalyst and diisopropylethylamine(DIPEA)as a terminal reductant under visible light irradiation.Mild conditions and high yields mean that this new polarity inversion strategy can be used with aryl‐substituted alcohols and amines.Spectroscopic studies and control experiments have demonstrated the oxidative quenching of Ir(ppy)3*by electron‐deficient arenes involved in the key step for the C–C bond formation. 展开更多

A great deal of research work on biostratigraphy was done by predecessors. After systematic palaeomagnetic studies, we have confirmed the existence of the Permian Kiaman reversed polarity epoch in the study region. Its palaeolatitude varied from 11.2° N(P,) to 15.6°N(P2). This provides important evidence for the view that this region was situated in a low latitude climatic zone in this period and gradually moved northwards from the tropic rain forest climate area to the tropic arid-humid seasonal climate area during this stage. 展开更多

A low-temperature component iso lated between 100 and 200–250?C is close to the present geomagnetic field direction, and a high-temperature component iso lated above 200–250?C reveals clearly normal, reversed, and transitional polarities. Magnetostratigraphic results of both sec tions indicated that the Gauss-Matuyama reversal consists of a high-frequency polarity fluctuation zone, but the characteristic remanent magnetization directions during the reversal are clearly inconsistent. Rock magnetic experiments demonstrated tha for all the specimens with normal, reversed, and transitional polarities magnetite and hematite are the main magnetic carriers Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility indicates that the studied loess sediments have a primary sedimentary fabric. Based on virtual geomagnetic pole latitudes, the Gauss-Matuyama reversal records in the two sections are accompanied by 14 short-lived geomagnetic episodes(15 rapid polarity swings) and 12 short-lived geomagnetic episodes(13 rapid polarity swings), respec tively. Our new records, together with previous ones from lacustrine, marine, and aeolian deposits, suggest that high-frequency polarity swings coexist with the Gauss-Matuyama reversal, and that the Gauss-Matuyama reversal may have taken more than11 kyr to complete. However, we need more detailed analyses of sections across polarity swings during reversals as well a more high-resolution reversal records to understand geomagnetic behavior and inconsistent characteristic remanent magnetiza tion directions during polarity reversals. 展开更多

A high accuracy frequency synchronization method is proposed for the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) long term evolution advanced (LTE-A) downlink receiver in time division duplexing (TDD) mode. In general, cyclic prefix (CP) correlation based fractional frequency offset (FFO) estimation method and primary synchronization signal (PSS) differential correlation based integer frequency offset (IFO) estimation method are applied for LTE-A frequency synchronization. However, the polarity of CP based FFO estimation result may get reversed when system FFO is closer to the edge of frequency estimation range on account of noise interference; PSS based IFO estimation has performance degradation in low signal noise ratio (SNR). We propose polarity detection aided CP based FFO estimation and frequency domain enhanced differential correlation based IFO estimation to obtain higher accuracy of frequency synchronization. Computer simulation shows that the proposed method greatly outperforms the conventional methods, especially in low SNR scenario. 展开更多

Polyethylene terephthalate mesh(PET) enhanced cellulose acetate membranes were fabricated via a phase inversion process. The membrane fabrication parameters that may affect the membrane performance were systematically evaluated including the concentration and temperature of the casting polymer solution and the temperature and time of the evaporation, coagulation and annealing processes. The water permeability and reverse salt flux were measured in forward osmosis(FO) mode for determination of the optimal membrane fabrication conditions. The optimal FO membrane shows a typical asymmetric sandwich structure with a mean thickness of about 148.2 μm. The performance of the optimal FO membrane was tested using 0.2 mol/L Na Cl as the feed solution and 1.5 mol/L glucose as the draw solution. The membrane displayed a water flux of 3.47 L/(m2·hr) and salt rejection of95.48% in FO mode. While in pressure retarded osmosis(PRO) mode, the water flux was4.74 L/(m2·hr) and salt rejection 96.03%. The high ratio of water flux in FO mode to that in PRO mode indicates that the fabricated membrane has a lower degree of internal concentration polarization than comparable membranes. 展开更多
