In the quest for a more sustainable and efficient separation, solvent-resistant nanofiltration(SRNF) has emerged as a promising answer. This is because SRNF is a membrane-based process which offers the key advantages of high efficacy and low energy intensity separation. In particular, polymer-based membranes can offer compelling opportunities for SRNF with unprecedented cost-effectiveness. As a result, intensive research efforts have been devoted into developing novel polymer-based membranes with solvent-resistant capacities as well as exploring potential applications in different types of industries. In this review, we aim to give an overview of the recent progress in the development of the state-of-the-art polymer-based membranes for SRNF in the first section. Emerging nanomaterials for mixed matrix and thin film nanocomposite membranes are also covered in this section. This is followed by a discussion on the current status of membrane engineering and SRNF membrane commercialization. In the third section, we highlight recent efforts in adopting SRNF for relevant industrial applications such as food, bio-refinery, petrochemical, fine chemical and pharmaceutical industries followed by separations of enantiomers in stereochemistry, homogeneous catalysis and ionic liquids. Finally, we offer a perspective and provide deeper insights to help shape future research direction in this very important field of SRNF.展开更多

In this study, a kind of solvent-resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) membrane was fabricated via interfacial polymerization on a laboratory optimized cellulose acetate (CA) basic membrane. The effects of interfacial polymerization parameters, such as water phase concentration, immersed time in the water phase and in the organic phase, on the pure water flux and rejection rate of C-2R yellow dyestuffs were investigated. A highest dye rejection rate of 72.9% could be obtained by water phase solution containing 1% m-xylylenediamine (mXDA) and organic phase solution with 0.2% trimesoyl chloride (TMC) under immersed time in water phase of 6 minutes and in organic phase of 40 seconds. This membrane demonstrated better resistance to methyl alcohol compared to commercial membrane. This study may offer an avenue to develop a solvent-resistant nanofiltration membrane.展开更多

The synthesized polyamide had a characteristic peak of carbon atoms in the amide group at 166 ppm, which was demonstrated by the solid nuclear magnetic resonance carbon spectrum. It was shown to be the stretching vibration absorption peak of the amide N-H bond at 3342 cm−1 by Fourier infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. It was obtained that the energy band near 1100 - 1276 cm−1 belongs to the absorption peak of the para-substituted benzene ring and the band near 2977 cm−1 was the C-H stretching vibration peak of the benzene ring by Raman spectroscopy. The molecular structure of the synthesized polyamide compound was confirmed by FT-IR, Raman, and solid 13C-NMR spectroscopies. It was proved that the polymer is stable up to 300˚C and has a relatively high stability by the thermogravimetric analysis. It was also confirmed by the fluorescence spectrum that it has a strong blue fluorescence near 420 nm. The morphological characteristics of the polymer were further demonstrated by electron scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The properties of polymeric p-benzoyl-4,4'-diaminobenzoyl-aniline were found to emit strong blue fluorescence and have good thermal stability, making it a promising functional material for fluorescence in the blue region with potential for large-scale applications.展开更多

PSAG was highly effective for the solubilization of SCNTs in water and validated by UV-vis absorption spectra experiments, resulting in homogeneous and stable PSAG-SCNT aqueous dispersion. The microstructure of SCNTs was observed through Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, compared with the two common polymeric dispersants of Triton X-100 and PSS, PSAG demonstrated more effective performances for dispersing SCNTs under identical conditions. Furthermore, the photosensitive PSAG-SCNTs can be crosslinked after UV irradiation, leading to significant improvement in the water resistance of SCNT films. UV-cured films can be transferred to plastic wrap to form a flexible film with high electrical conductivity.展开更多

The composite membranes were featured with an asymmetric three-layer structure, i.e., a porous ceramic membrane substrate, a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration sub-layer, and a polyam-ide/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite thin top-layer. The PVDF polymer was cast onto the tubular porous ceramic membranes with an immersion precipitation method, and the polyamide/PVA composite thin top-layer was fabricated with an interfacial polymerization method. The effects of the sub-layer composition and the recipe in the interfacial po-lymerization for fabricating the top-layer on the structure and performance of composite membranes were systematically investigated. The prepared composite membranes showed a good performance for treating the O/W microemulsions with a mean diameter of about 2.4μm. At the operating pressure of 0.4MPa, the hydraulic permeability remained steadily about 190L?m-2?h-1, the oil concentration in the permeate was less than 1.6mg·L-1, and the oil rejection coefficient was always higher than 98.5% throughout the operation from the beginning.展开更多

This bacterium was capable of resisting high hexavalent chromium concentration and reducing Cr(VI) under aerobic condition. CrO4^2- stimulated the increase of bacterial size and production of compact convex paths containing chromium on the bacterial surface. The increase of bacterial size was caused by integrative growth but not extracellular polymeric substance hyperplasia. IR and SDS-PAGE analyses showed the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) components were mainly proteins and had no obvious changes whether the strains were induced by Cr(VI) or not. The EPS was amorphous and contained trivalent chromium. Under CrO4^2- growth condition, the extracellular substance of Enterobacter cloacae CYS-25 strains and Cr(VI) had redox reaction. The products were Cr^3*-protein complexes which formed a piece of compact convex paths on the surface of bacteria and prevented Cr(VI) from entering into cells.展开更多

Some factors that affect the yield and properties of the polymeric surfactant were investigated systemically. The surface tension of the polymeric surfactant reaches 37-38 mN/m. It is proved that the polymeric surfactant shows very good surface activity and emulsifying ability. The TG analysis shows that the temperature of the thermal degradation can reach 314.4 ℃. It will be used as a new type of polymeric surfactant.展开更多
