In this study, a questionnaire is conducted twice among 156 Chinese college students when they are sophomores and seniors. It intends to identify some components of foreign language learning motivation and probes into the causes for the changing motivations of students throughout 4-year college education. The findings suggest that the instrumental motivation plays a crucial role in foreign language learning context.展开更多

Data were gathered through qualitative methods by semi-structured interviews and observation with 6 non-English majors from Tianjin Foreign Studies University. Students' CET-4 scores were collected as well. Out-of-class observation was conducted with two participants who represent respectively high and low scores in CET. The results indicated that high scorers generally showed higher level of learner autonomy in out-of-class learning context. than low scorers. Most of the participants hoped to obtain more guidance and recommendations for learning materials and learning strategies so as to improve their language skills.展开更多

A need was hence felt to introduce a new learning resource to supplement traditional teaching-learning methods. Methods: Digital, case based self–study modules were prepared using all open source technology and validated by experts in the specialty. The modules were uploaded on a website specifically created for the purpose. They were pilot tested on twenty consenting third year undergraduate (MBBS) students using a crossover design. Post test comprising of multiple choice questions was administered to the students after a period of two weeks. Feedback was obtained from faculty and students. Results: Test scores were found to be significantly higher amongst students who used the learning modules as a supplement to regular bedside teaching (p < 0.001;Wilcoxon signed rank test). Majority of students agreed that the modules helped them gain confidence during internal assessment examinations and would help revision. Conclusions: Online, case based, self-study modules helped students to perform better when used as a supplement to traditional teaching methods. Students agreed that it enabled easy understanding of subject and helped them gain confidence.展开更多

A qualitative case study method was used to understand the GI system used by Chinese instructors as well as the achievements acquired and challenges met by the participants. Three instructors and fifteen second-year-undergraduates taking a course titled Sources of European Culture participated. Interviews, observations, and documents were used to collect the data. Data analysis showed Chinese instructors applied a GI technique similar to that discussed by Johnson and Johnson(1999); however, GI in the Chinese context demanded more effort from the teacher for designing tasks and provided help in modeling uses of English and in preparing visual, especially Power Point, presentations. Although participants used their mother tongue at some stages, their autonomy over English learning was activated, and horizons in the course content were broadened.展开更多
