Book Review “William R. Spillers and Keith M. MacBain. Structural Optimization,Springer Dordrecht Heidelberg London New York,2009”

This book presents general theories and applications of structural optimization methods. The first chapter of the book introduces various basic concepts of structural optimization through several illustrative examples. Chapter 2 is devoted to a comprehensive review of math- ematical programming methods, including classical methods such as the simplex method, the （SLP） method, the interior point method and relatively new approaches such as genetic algo- rithms. The third chapter presents the main topic of this book, the SLP methods based on the incremental equations of structures. Some useful techniques in implementation of SLP, including the move limit, scaling and active constraint identifying, are discussed. In chapter 4, classical optimality criterion approaches, including the fully stress approach for truss struc- tures and its extensions for membrane and plate structures, are presented with demonstrative examples. The remaining chapters develop an overview of structural optimization problems, among which are dynamic optimization, multi-criterion optimization, earlier work on the op- timal layouts of plates, as well as some practical issues in general size and shape optimization problems.

Chapter 1 History and foundation by Alagan Anpalagan. This book chapter deals with history and foundation of cognitive radio. In recent years wireless communications have experienced an unprecedented success for the rapidity of their diffusion and for their impact in the life of human society. The technologies used in wireless communications are far from being mature and many changes induced by their progress are still to come. Cognitive radio is one of these technologies and is regarded as a key technology to increase efficiency in wireless communications. In many circumstances the spectrum assigned to wireless communications is not fully used. The main goal of cognitive radio is to improve the exploitation of the spectrum. The idea is to let the unlicensed users to access the spectrum left unused by the licensed users. In this chapter the main steps of the brief history of cognitive radio are presented including issues related to policy regulations that have influenced the technology and alternative technical solutions as software defined radio. The chapter ends with a brief discussion of future applications in wireless communications and of the challenges that they pose to cognitive radio. This is a well written and informative chapter that deals with an important technology. I suggest to read it. Chapter 6 MIMO systems and cooperative networks performances by Kosai Raoof, Maha Ben Zid. This chapter deals with MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) systems. This is a technology used to in wireless communications to improve transmission robustness and to increase spectral efficiency. The relation between MIMO systems and wireless sensor networks is investigated. Spatially distributed wireless sensor networks are deployed for many different purposes, let us mention, for example, environment monitoring missions or surveillance missions. Cooperative networks with virtual MIMO channels are studied, in particular networks aware of their environment are considered. These are cognitive networks that operate in wireless form. This last feature is the bridge that links them to cognitive radio. In fact the cognitive radio technology is used to allocate spectrum to the users of the cognitive network in an adaptive way. This book chapter deals with a specific application, however, this is a very important application and this work is written in a way that makes it readable by a wide audience technically oriented readers. I suggest to read it.

Review on the Book: Advances in Water Quality Control

Water pollution is a steadily worsening problem because of growth in the chemical, pharmaceutical, leather, textile, and mining industries. In addition, municipal wastewater further contributes to polluting pure water sources. Hence, adequate treatment is essential before it released to avoid pollution of pure water sources. Chapter 3 describes guidelines for wastewater treatment taking into account its physical, chemical and mechanical nature. The guidelines are also helpful in maintaining the operational treatment facilities;it is estimated that 10 to 20 percent of wastewater treatment facilities even in developed countries are not operating properly. Treatment methods are divided into conventional and Natural biological processes and the advantages and drawbacks of each are clearly explained. The influential parameters are identified for the primary (settling to remove solid wastes), secondary (bacteria in removing pollutants) and tertiary (involving advanced techniques such as Biological Nutrient Removal) water purification methods, particularly municipal wastewater treatments. The biological treatment process via microorganisms is particularly suited for Lagoons, Ponds and wetlands because they avoid secondary by-products contaminants. Guidelines are given for the construction of artificial lakes and ponds to be used for wastewater treatment, and diagrams, designs, schemes, and mathematical models are provided. These can also be used for some difficult industrial wastewaters as well as for municipal water containing pharmaceuticals and personal care products. The author emphasized that wetland treatment is often the best choice for the pre-treatment of water and wastewater based on cost and the efficiency. This wastewater treatment chapter is very useful for environment researchers, and engineers, ecologist and the environmental education programs.

Desertification is a global phenomenon that affects about two billion people. It occurs in arid zones where the annual precipitation is below 400 mm, partic- ularly in the marginal areas of the world＇s largest deserts. It is a result of water and wind erosion, over- grazing, global warm-ing, improper soil cultivation, and increased pressure ot population growth, and it causes degradation of soil and natural and agricultural vegetation. The direct result is less food for people and livestock, which influences pop- ulation and animal husbandry fluctuations. Despite ef- forts to combat and reduce desertification, the affected areas are annually increasing.

Optimization in Computer Engineering—Theory and Applications: Book Review of Chapter 8—Applying Graph Coloring to Frequency Assignment

The chapter gives a concise and clear presentation of the basic concepts and the variants of the graph coloring problem. It discusses the link between these variants. It uses a very simple and clear language that is at the grasp of an average engineering or science undergraduate student. It then focuses on discussing the applicability of the graph coloring problem to Frequency Assignment Problem (FAP). It precisely selects a special case of this problem: the Fixed Channel Assignment (FCA). The chapter gives a clear explanation of the common application domains of the Frequency Assignment problem such as radio and television transmission, military applications needs, satellite communication, and frequency planning of WLANs. The transition from FAP to graph coloring problem is well explained by using simple examples and graphical illustrations. The empirical assessment of the efficiency of the applied algorithm on FAP instance and random graphs is presented by giving the process, and the results. The implementation is carried using the Budapest Complexity Analysis Toolkit (BCAT). The content of the chapter is expected to age gracefully. It tackles a problem that is relevant today and will remain pertinent for many years to come. The title of the chapter is accurate. It captures the method and the subject that is tackled in the chapter. The examples are simple and easy to follow and the illustrations are appropriate and well executed. The chapter is not only written is a clear natural language but also complying with technical accuracy, which makes its content accessible and suitable to a variety of readers. A reader with a basic background in optimization has access to the material presented in the chapter. At the same time, an expert can find very interesting the empirical assessment of the complexity of solving FAPs. The chapter would benefit from a better explanation for the rational of the empirical study. Explaining the reasons for focussing the study on increasing edge density, increasing the number of vertices, and on increasing the number of colors would help a non-expert reader understand its rational. In general the chapter is a wellarticulate piece of work and presents a lasting contribution to the field that is accessible to a wide audience.
