Diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN)is one of the strongest risk factors for diabetic foot ulcers(neuropathic ulcerations)and the existing ulcers may further deteriorate due to the damage to sensory neurons. Moreover, the resulting numbness in the limbs causes difficulty in discovering these ulcerations in a short time.DPN is associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)compounds such as Shenqi Dihuang Decoction,Huangkui Capsules and Qidi Tangshen Granules can reduce the clinical symptoms of diabetic nephropathy by modulating gut microbiota. The current review discusses whether TCM compounds can reduce the risk of DPN by improving gut microbiota. 展开更多

A case of progressive supranuclear palsy in a 66-year-old woman is presented. The patient complained of“progressive stiffness of both lower limbs for five years, accompanied by choking and coughing for more than 1 year,”and was diagnosed with paralysis in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),which was characterized by a deficiency of liver and kidney, and phlegm and blood stasis blocking the collaterals.Western medicine diagnosed it as progressive supranuclear palsy. The patient was diagnosed with“Parkinson’s disease”several times in the past and was given“polybasic hydrazide”and“amantadine hydrochloride tablets,”etc. The patient did not have significant symptomatic relief,so she sought further treatment with a combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine.Based on the concept of deficiency and excess, this disease is categorized as a paralytic disease in Chinese medicine, and the onset of the disease is closely related to the deficiency of the body after a long period of illness, with wind, phlegm, blood stasis, and deficiency as the main pathogenetic mechanism. The treatment is based on the combination of disease and evidence, with traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture as the main treatments, supplemented by intermediate-frequency pulsed electrical stimulation, transcranial repetitive magnetic stimulation, medicated canisters, wax therapy, traditional Chinese medicine guasha, and acupoint injections.Western medicine is based on symptomatic treatment, and the patient’s symptoms were relieved significantly after the combination of Chinese and Western medicine. 展开更多

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) for preventing acute mountain sickness(AMS).Methods: We included randomized controlled trials(RCTs) which evalueded the effect of TCM for preventing AMS, compared with a placebo, no treatment or acetazolamide. The literature was searched in 6major databases. RevMan 5.4 software was used for the meta-analysis. The relative risk for discrete variables and the mean difference for continuous variables with 95% confidence intervals(CIs) were applied to express the effect size. The risk of bias in the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane risk assessment tool 2.0(RoB 2.0), and the evidence certainty was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment and the Development and Evaluation(GRADE) approach. Results: Twenty RCTs involving 3015 participants and 16 TCM patent drugs were included. The overall risk of bias in the majority of studies(15/20) was of some concerns. In terms of the AMS incidence,Rhodiola rosea(R. rosea, Hong Jing Tian) and Ginkgo biloba(G. biloba, Yin Xing Ye) were equivalent to the placebo/no treatment [RR(95% CI): 0.66(0.43-1.01), 0.82(0.63-1.06), respectively]. The AMS incidence in the G. biloba group was higher than that in the acetazolamide group [RR(95% CI): 2.92(1.69-5.06)]. In terms of improving the AMS symptom score on days 1 and 3 in the plateau, R. rosea and G. biloba were superior to the placebo or no treatment [MD(95% CI):-0.98(-1.71,-0.25),-2.05(-3.14,-0.95), respectively]. The other 14 Chinese patent medicines were evaluated in a single trial, and the majority of the results were negative. The subgroup analysis showed that the effect of R. rosea was related to the intervention time, way of ascending, and altitude. Conclusion: R. rosea and G. biloba were effective in improving AMS symptoms but had no effect in reducing the AMS incidence. There was insufficient evidence to support the use of other TCM patent drugs to prevent AMS. More randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials are warranted to evaluate and screen effective Chinese patent medicines for AMS prevention. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)believes that the main pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis is spleen deficiency;damp heat in the large intestine as the symptom, the treatment must be warming, clearing, eliminating, tonifying, astringing concurrently. From the concept of combining holism and the local treatment in TCM,idea of combining internal and external treatment is adopted. That is,the external treatment follows the therapeutic principle of using herbs with a bitter and cold nature to eliminate stagnation, and the seven carbon decoction, which can clear heat and dampness, cool the blood, and stop dysentery,is used as a rectal drip to retain the enema.Internal treatment follows the therapeutic principle of warmly tonifying and cultivating vital qi,with oral Chinese herbal medicine named Maodie Tang to strengthen the spleen and tonify the kidney, clearing heat and inducing dampness. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) has played a positive role in the management of hepatocarcinoma. Hepatocarcinoma patients may present Qi-stagnation, damp-heat, blood stasis, Qi-deficiency, Yin-deficiency and other TCM syndromes(Zheng). Modern treatments such as surgery, transarterial chemoembolization(TACE) and high intensity focus ultrasound treatment would influence the manifestation of TCM syndromes. Herbs with traditional efficacy of tonifying Qi, blood and Yin, soothing liver-Qi stagnation, clearing heat and detoxifying and dissolving stasis, have been demonstrated to be potent to prevent hepatocarcinogenesis. TCM has been widely used in all aspects of integrative therapy in hepatocarcinoma, including surgical resection, liver transplantation, TACE, local ablative therapies and even as monotherapy for middle-advanced stage hepatocarcinoma. Clinical practices have confirmed that TCM is effective to alleviate clinical symptoms, improve quality of life and immune function, prevent recurrence and metastasis, delay tumor progression, and prolong survival time in hepatocarcinoma patients. The effective mechanism of TCM against hepatocarcinoma is related to inducing apoptosis, autophagy, anoikis and cell senescence, arresting cell cycle, regulating immune function, inhibiting metastasis and angiogenesis, reversing drug resistance and enhancing effects of chemotherapy. Along with the progress of research in this field, TCM will contribute more to the prevention and treatment of hepatocarcinoma. 展开更多

At present, colorectal cancer depends on surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Due to the characteristics of the elderly, postoperative recovery is slow, prone to postoperative complications and difficult to tolerate radiotherapy and chemotherapy have become the main problem hindering the disease. Based on the theory of prevention, the use of drugs from the perspective of constitution and etiology can prevent the occurrence of colorectal cancer in the elderly. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy can alleviate adverse reactions and improve treatment efficacy. TCM with surgical treatment can reduce the occurrence of postoperative complications and promote postoperative recovery. For patients with advanced colorectal cancer, TCM can play a role in fighting cancer and improving the quality of life of patients. For patients in stable phase, TCM can prevent tumor recurrence and metastasis. 展开更多
