The author's research topics include economic and legal questions concerning prostitution and drug use. There are two extreme models in these two areas, one represented by Sweden and the other by the Netherlands. Sweden votes for the model of a "prostitution and drug free society", while the latter represents a looser, more liberal view. This presentation aims to answer the question whether the statistics support the presumptions of either model. To shed light on these issues, facts and figures published by the Swedish and Dutch statistics offices as well as other studies on the subject were analyzed. During the course of the past few decades. the income from the prostitution and drug markets in Sweden was virtually unchanged. This may be considered as a failure: prostitution and drug use could not be decreased further. It may also be considered as an achievement: while these two markets were growing in many countries, at least in the case of Sweden the situation did not become worse. It seems that the liberal regulation of drugs and prostitution in the Netherlands has not been a successful venture. It is no wonder that there are plans for changes and limitations to the prostitution sector with new regulations, although complete prohibition has not been raised as an issue. The consumption of drugs has been increasing. In this respect, alongside the liberal stance on the issue, increasing emphasis is placed on deterrence from light drugs. 展开更多

In the United States, prostitution is considered illegal in all but one state; Nevada allows some legal activities in exchange for substantial guidelines. In 2010, approxi- mately 43,600 females were arrested for prostitution. Numerous intervention programs were established in order to obstruct the lifestyle of a prostitute (PRP~ Project ROSE, etc.). There are many documentations and programs that share their forethought on prostitution; however, few target prostitution directly. To determine the dynamics of prostitution, this paper constructs a four-class compartmental model that focuses on the effectiveness of government intervention and rehabilitation of prostitutes mathematically. The basic reproductive number, R0, helps to discover the threshold values for the dynamics of prostitution to become both prevalent or absent in society. This paper predominately observes government intervention to curtail a prostitution prevalent society. Various parameters and variables help to define and indicate the dynamics of pros- titution to construct viable simulations. Successful prostitution interaction prevention deemed essential in prostitution prevention; however, government intervention corresponding with successful rehabilitation competitively challenges prostitution interaction prevention in reducing basic reproductive values. 展开更多

Bodies, Persons, and Respect for Humanity: A Kantian Look at the Permissibility of Organ Commerce and Donation

"No", Kant would answer. Humanity, whether in one's own person or that of any other, must never be treated merely as a means, but always at the same time as an end, is Kant's instruction (Groundwork 4:429). He thought that organ sale violates this imperative. Lectures on Ethics (27:346) shows that "... a man is not entitled to sell his limbs for money If a man does that, he turns himself into a thing, and then anyone may treat him as they please, because he has thrown his person away...." This paper explains Kant's reasons against commerce in organs, drawing on his views on prostitution, and the moral impermissibility of sexual use within this context, a case which he himself compares to the selling of one's body part(s). Can choosing to donate one's kidney be morally permissible? If we take Kant's views at face value, it would follow that organ donation is on a par with morality only if it takes place in a context where people have gained rights over each other's persons (for example, in a marital context). In this context, however, a person has a right to her partner's kidney should she happen to need it, which can open the path to bodily violation. Moreover, this view severely restricts the permissibility of organ donation. In this paper, I argue that a closer examination of Kant's views on what is involved in the idea of respecting humanity could reveal that organ donation does not violate the categorical imperative. In fact, it could be said to follow from such an imperative that we actually have a duty to organ donation. 展开更多

What Do Iron Maiden Tell Us? An Attempt to Explain the Enormous Popularity of This Band Based on the Song Lyrics From 1980 Until 1983

Iron Maiden is one of the leading bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWoBHM). The song lyrics of the first three albums deal, among other things, with the usual topics the youth of the time were concerned with (love, rebellion and resistance against the establishment), although they were viewed from a different angle: instead of love the lyrics talk about prostitution (Charlotte the Harlot), sexual harassment (Prowler), and juvenile criminality (Running Free). This paper aims, on the one hand to show an overview of the topics of the song lyrics from the earlier Iron Maiden albums, and on the other hand to examine the concrete consequences the lyrics had on the music of the band (text interpretation). During the 1980s, Iron Maiden began to diverge both musically (in the direction of experimental heavy metal) and thematically (among others, science fiction and war) from the NWoBHM. A further aim of this paper is to examine how much these new themes in the narrative influenced the music of Iron Maiden. 展开更多

While there is no consensus on the number of domestic sex trafficking victims in India, the phenomenon is estimated to be widespread and the evidence of its impact on victims is devastating. This paper explored the narratives of 10 sex trafficked women from a major non-government organization in New Delhi. Qualitative methodology was adopted and data were collected through open-ended unstructured interviews. The victimological paradigm including the Lifestyle Risk Model (LRM) by Van der Hoven and Maree provided the framework to discuss the key issues related to sex trafficking. Psychological experiences such as being abused by husbands, and in some cases, victims' own families; social conditions such as poverty and education; cultural practices such as vulnerability of women and marginalization; and lifestyle risk factors were observed throughout the stories of the victims. Furthermore, shame was found to be the core emotion in the stigmatization process. Limitations and future directions are also discussed. 展开更多

Prostitutes are the victims of the desire of human beings. Behind the sexual transaction, evil forces that drove poor women into prostitution are concealed. In the following four literary works: The Sun Also Rises, A Street Car Named Desire, The Crescent Moon and Husband, the inner beauty of prostitutes as a wife or a mother is highly praised and the dark side of the contemporary society is exposed. The thesis begins with the depiction of four prostitutes' individual shining points and weaknesses in personality. And then it describes the family backgrounds and social backgrounds the four prostitutes lived in, and states the influence of those backgrounds on them respectively. The thesis finally puts forward the realistic significance. 展开更多

Futian District in Shenzhen,Guangdong Province had a very unusual look about it late last November when hundreds of prostitutes and their customers were paraded in front of at least a thousand local residents. The move was part of a campaign by the police to crack down on the illegal sex industry and was met by whistles, applause and other less savory commentsfrom those who had turned out to see the great walk of shame. 展开更多
