Spanning across the Great East Road campus, UNZA has established one of the most extensive computer networks in Zambia, serving a burgeoning community of over 20,000 active users through a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN). However, as the digital landscape continues to evolve, it is besieged with burgeoning challenges that threaten the very fabric of network integrity—cyber security threats and the imperatives of maintaining high Quality of Service (QoS). In an effort to mitigate these threats and ensure network efficiency, the development of a mobile application to monitor temperatures in the server room was imperative. According to L. Wei, X. Zeng, and T. Shen, the use of wireless sensory networks to monitor the temperature of train switchgear contact points represents a cost-effective solution. The system is based on wireless communication technology and is detailed in their paper, “A wireless solution for train switchgear contact temperature monitoring and alarming system based on wireless communication technology”, published in the International Journal of Communications, Network and System Sciences, vol. 8, no. 4, pp. 79-87, 2015 [1]. Therefore, in this study, a mobile application technology was explored for monitoring of temperatures in the server room in order to aid Cisco device performance. Additionally, this paper also explores the hardening of Cisco device security and QoS which are the cornerstones of this study.展开更多

Traditional forwarding approaches, which employed a store and forward operation, have not been able to approach the limit of the max-flow min-cut throughput wherein sources transmitting information over bottleneck links have to compete for access to these links. With Network Coding, multiple sources are now able to transmit packets over bottleneck links simultaneously, achieving the max-flow min-cut through-put and increasing network capacity. While the majority of the contemporary literature has focused on the performance of Network Coding from a capacity perspective, the aim of this research has taken a new direction focusing on two Quality of Service metrics, e.g., Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) and Latency, in conjunction with Network Coding protocols in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Simulations are performed on static and mobile environments to determine a Quality of Service baseline comparison between Network Coding protocols and traditional ad hoc routing protocols. The results show that the Random Linear Network Coding protocol has the lowest Latency and Dynamic Source Routing protocol has the highest PDR in the static scenarios, and show that the Random Linear Network Coding protocol has the best cumulative performance for both PDR and Latency in the mobile scenarios.展开更多

Recently, several proposals for fulfilling the quality of service(QoS) guarantees have been presented. However, they can only support coarse-grained QoS with no guarantee of throughput, jitter, delay or loss rate for different applications. To address these more challenging problems, an adaptive scheduling algorithm for Parallel data Processing with Multiple Feedback(PPMF) queues based on software defined networks(SDN) is proposed in this paper, which can guarantee the quality of service of high priority traffic in multimedia applications. PPMF combines the queue bandwidth feedback mechanism to realise the automatic adjustment of the queue bandwidth according to the priority of the packet and network conditions, which can effectively solve the problem of network congestion that has been experienced by some queues for a long time. Experimental results show PPMF significantly outperforms other existing scheduling approaches in achieving 35--80% improvement on average time delay by adjusting the bandwidth adaptively, thus ensuring the transmission quality of the specified traffic and avoiding effectively network congestion.展开更多

In fog, we often repeat the procedure of placing services because of the geographical distribution of mobile users. We may not expect a fixed demand and supply relationship between users and service providers since users always prefer nearby service with less time delay and transmission consumption. That is, a plug-and-play service mode is what we need in fog. In this paper, we put forward a dynamic placement strategy for fog service to guarantee the normal service provision and optimize the Quality of Service (QoS). The simulation results show that our strategy can achieve better performance under metrics including energy consumption and end-to-end latency. Moreover, we design a real Plug-and-Play Fog (PnPF) based on Raspberry Pi and OpenWrt to provide fog services for wireless multimedia networks.展开更多

Efficient vertical handoff should allocate network resources efficiently and maintain good quality of service (QoS) for the end users. The objective of this work is to determine conditions under which vertical handoff can be performed. The channel usage situation of each access network is formulated as a birth-death process with the objective of predicting the avaliable bandwidth and the blocking probability. A reward function is used to capture the network bandwidth and the blocking probability is expressed as a cost function. An end user will access the certain network which maximizes the total function defined as the combination of the reward fimction and the cost function. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the network performance, including higher bandwidth for end users and lower new call blocking and handoff call blocking probability for networks.展开更多

Therefore, it is essential to understand and capture the relation between streaming and elastic traffic behavior. In this paper, we focus on developing simple yet effective approximations to capture this relationship. We study, then, an analytical model to evaluate the end-to-end performance of elastic traffic under multi-queuing system. This model is based on the fluid flow approximation. We assume that network architecture gives the head of priority to real time traffic and shares the remaining capacity between the elastic ongoing flows according to a specific weight.展开更多

The results show that the Random Linear Network Coding protocol has the lowest Latency and Dynamic Source Routing protocol has the highest PDR in the static scenarios, and show that the Random Linear Network Coding protocol has the best cumulative performance for both PDR and Latency in the mobile scenarios.

文摘To guarantee the Quality of Service (QoS) is one of the key objectives of the next generation network.Based on the introduction of the Next Generation Network(NGN) and the definition of QoS,various aspects of QoS are analyzed in this article, with emphasis on different approaches and business models. It is noted that QoS concerns the parametric network performance parameters and the application “satisfaction” level.
文摘In this paper, we employed Na?ve Bayes, Markov blanket and Tabu search to rank web services. The Bayesian Network is demonstrated on a dataset taken from literature. The dataset consists of 364 web services whose quality is described by 9 attributes. Here, the attributes are treated as criteria, to classify web services. From the experiments, we conclude that Na?ve based Bayesian network performs better than other two techniques comparable to the classification done in literature.

文摘The concurrent presence of different types of traffic in multimedia applications might aggravate a burden on the underlying data network, which is bound to affect the transmission quality of the specified traffic. Experimental results show PPMF significantly outperforms other existing scheduling approaches in achieving 35--80% improvement on average time delay by adjusting the bandwidth adaptively, thus ensuring the transmission quality of the specified traffic and avoiding effectively network congestion.

文摘Initially as an extension of cloud computing, fog computing has been inspiring new ideas about moving computing tasks to the edge of networks. Moreover, we design a real Plug-and-Play Fog (PnPF) based on Raspberry Pi and OpenWrt to provide fog services for wireless multimedia networks.

文摘With the increase of network complexity, the flexibility of network control and management becomes a nontrivial problem. Both Software Defined Network(SDN) and Autonomic Network technologies are sophisticated technologies for the network control and management. These two technologies could be combined together to construct a software defined self-managing solution for the future network. An autonomic QoS management mechanism in Software Defined Network(AQSDN) is proposed in this paper. In AQSDN,the various QoS features can be configured autonomically in an OpenFlow switch through extending the OpenFlow and OF-Config protocols.Based on AQSDN,a novel packet context-aware QoS model(PCaQoS) is also introduced for improving the network QoS.PCaQoS takes packet context into account when packet is marked and managed into forwarding queues. The implementation of a video application's prototype which evaluates the self-configuration feature of the AQSDN and the enhancement ability of the PCaQoS is presented in order to validate this design.

文摘In converged heterogeneous wireless networks, vertical handoff is an important issue in radio resource management and occurs when an end user switches from one network to another (e.g., from wireless local area network to wideband code division multiple access). Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the network performance, including higher bandwidth for end users and lower new call blocking and handoff call blocking probability for networks.

文摘The evaluation of network operation and maintenance quality is an important reference for carriers to improve their service. However, the traditional evaluation methods involve so much human participation that it cannot cope with the explosive amount of data. Therefore, both the major carriers and researchers are trying to find solutions to evaluate the quality of network operation and maintenance more objectively and accurately. In this paper,we analyze the general process of quality evaluation models for network operation and maintenance. The process has four steps:1)selection of evaluation indicators;2)data process for chosen indicators;3)determination of indicator weights;4)establishment of evaluation models. We further describe the working principle of each step, especially the methods for indicator selection and weight determination. Finally,we review the recently proposed evaluation models and the international stan dards of network operation and maintenance quality evaluation.

文摘In order to guarantee the overall return on investment (ROI), improve user experience and quality of service (QoS), save energy, reduce electra magnetic interference (EMI) and radiation pollution, and enable the sustainable deployment of new profitable applications and services in heterogeneous wireless networks coexistence reality, this paper proposes a cross-network cooperation mechanism to effectively share network resources and infrastructures, and then adaptively control and match multi-network energy distribution characteristics according to actual user/service requirements in different geographic areas. Some idle or lightly-loaded base stations (BS or BSs) will be temporally turned off for saving energy and reducing EMI. Initial simulation results show that the proposed approach can significantly improve the overall energy efficiency and QoS performance across multiple cooperative wireless networks.
文摘While Internet traffic is currently dominated by elastic data transfers, it is anticipated that streaming applications will rapidly develop and contribute a significant amount of traffic in the near future. We assume that network architecture gives the head of priority to real time traffic and shares the remaining capacity between the elastic ongoing flows according to a specific weight.
