A facile, safe and economical reducing agent, sodium hypophosphite(Na H2PO2·H2O), has been successfully employed for ambient temperature living radical copolymerization of styrene(St) and methyl methacrylate(MMA). Such effective reducing agent significantly improved the reactivity of low reactive St monomers during the copolymerization, where the reactivity ratios of St and MMA were determined to be 0.50 and 0.36 by Finemann-Ross method. Thus the copolymerizations proceeded fast and showed typical living/controlled features, as evidenced by pseudo first-order kinetics of polymerization, linear increase in molecular weight versus monomer conversion, and low polydispersity index values. Effects of the concentration of reducing agent and the monomer feed ratio on the copolymerization were investigated in detail. Furthermore, gel permeation chromatography and 1H-NMR analyses as well as chain extension experiments confirmed the high chain-end functionality of the resultant copolymer. 展开更多

Bonded type RE3+ doped luminescent co-polymer was synthesized by solution free radical copolymerization. The influence of charge sequence, monomers and co-polymerized method on properties and structures of the co-polymers was studied. The emission intensity of the co-polymers at different RE3+ concentrations was tested. The results showed that the co-polymers of Eu-PSt and Eu-PMMA both had wide absorption peak at 200-400 nm and the strongest peak appeared at 235 nm. The fluorescent intensity of Eu3+ doped polystyrene co-polymer was stronger than that of Eu3+ doped PMMA copolymer. The characteristic emission of europium ions was observed in the co-polymers. The copolymer doped with rare earth elements showed the 'sensitization effect' for the central ions. The bonded-type rare earth copolymer not only enhanced the energy transfer efficiency, but also improved the fluorescence intensity by increasing the rigidity of main and side chain. 展开更多

The monomer reactivity ratios of free radical copolymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate in carbon dioxide at vapor-liquid equilibrium state (vlCO(2)) at 65 degrees C and under 7.5-8.5 MPa were measured. The experimental results showed that, in comparison with the data in bulk copolymerization, the monomer reactivity ratio of St in vlCO(2) increased acompanied by a somewhat decrease in that of MMA. Further analysis of the sequence distributions of these copolymers by H-1-NMR spectra indicated that there was a significant bootstrap effect in this system. The local monomer concentrations in the proximity of growing free radicals, rather than the true reactivity of monomers or free radicals, were altered by the presence of vlCO(2), leading to the change in monomer reactivity ratios. 展开更多

A novel radical grafting copolymerization process has been designed for water-soluble polymers which avoids the problems of conducting grafting reactions in highly viscous polymerization media. A variety of water-soluble graft copolymers having starch or dextran as the backbone chain with grafted side chains of polyacrylamide (—AM—), poly (acrylic acid ) (—AA—), poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (—AM—NH_4AA—) or poly ( acrylamide-co-2-acryiamido-2-methyl-l-propanesulphinic acid) (—AM—AMPS—) have been synthesized in gel droplets using aceric sulphate redox initiator, and their properties compared. The reaction conditions were optimized taking into account reaction kinetic data and the observed properties of the products produced under different reaction conditions. The effects of the ratios of [backbone]/[graft monomer], [ AM]/[ AA]/[AMPS] , [Ce^(4+)]/[ S_2O_8=] and pH value on the reaction rate , conversion, grafting degree, grafted chain length and the product molecular weight have been investigated. 展开更多

In the present paper the synthesis of block copolymers via the transformation from living anionic polymerization (LAP) to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was described. α-Bromine-terminated polystyrenes(PStBr) in the LAP step was prepared by using n-BuLi as initiator, tetrahydrofuran (THF) as the activator, α-methylstyrene (α-MeSt) as the capping group and liquid bromine (Br_2) as the bromating agent. The effects of reaction conditions such as the amounts of α-MeSt, THF, and Br_2 as well as molecular weight of polystyrene on the bromating efficiency (BE) and coupling extent (CE) were examined. The present results show that the yield of PStBr obtained was more than 93. 8% and the coupling reaction was substantially absent. PStBr was further used as the macroinitiator in the polymerization of methyl-methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of copper (I ) halogen and 2, 2' -bipyridine (bpy) complexes. It was found that the molecular weight of the resulted PSt-b-PMMA increased linearly with the increase of the conversion of MMA and the polydispersity was 1. 2-1.6. The structures of PStBr and P(St-b-MMA) were characterized by ~1H NMR spectra. 展开更多
