Some Remarks on Reading and the Teaching of Reading

The Design and Implementation of New English Reading Teaching Model Under the Guidance of POA Theory

POA theory is a foreign language classroom teaching theoretical system with the Chinese characteristics,which was constructed by the foreign language education expert who named Wen Qiufang.The method takes output as the motivating target,introduces the teaching concept of"learning-using integrated principle",and adopts a new form of"motivating-enabling-assessing",which has reformed the mode of college foreign language classroom teaching.The traditional English reading teaching pays more attention to vocabulary interpretation,syntax analysis and reading skills,so it has been emerging a kind of"grammatical analysis"drawbacks.In view of this,the paper puts forward the thought of using"the production-oriented approach"to make innovation in the process of teaching design.The paper also discusses the application strategy of"production-oriented approach"in professional English reading teaching from three aspects.It requires designing the integral process of teaching,expanding a cooperative learning model and devising the specific tasks.Additionally,the paper points out that Professional English reading teaching should establish the learning task for students at the stage of"output-input".At the same time,the paper uses the development opportunity of"the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road"(B&R)as the starting point,which is combed with"cultural globalization"as the theme of reading teaching example.To activate the students'internal cognition and improve their reading ability,the author wants to explore effective strategies for establishing project in professional English reading teaching.The author has made a preliminary attempt in the guide of the method in the classroom,and has confirmed that it has practical feasibility.The teaching method is also applicable to professional English in military colleges and other languages teaching.It will help to promote the English teaching to realize the cultivation of students’comprehensive ability of using English,thinking ability,selflearning ability and comprehensive quality.

A Study of EFL Reading Teaching in Senior High Schools Based on Key Competencies of Subject

With the release of English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School,the cultivation of students’key competencies of English subject has become the major concern of many English teachers in senior high schools.As an important part of English teaching,reading teaching is supposed to take the responsibility of helping students form key competencies.In this study,the current situation of English reading teaching in senior high schools is investigated to find out whether English teachers fully and efficiently carry out the cultivation of key competencies of English subject in practical teaching.Data from questionnaires and interviews of teachers indicate practical problems exist in cultivating students’key competencies in English subject in senior high school,so teachers need to have a further understanding of them and take more innovative activities to help students develop their language competence,cultural disposition,thinking quality and learning ability.

Schema is interpreted as one's prior knowledge or background knowledge and schema theory is about a reader's utilizing his schema knowledge when reading so as to achieve efficient comprehension.Based on the analysis of the current situation of English reading instruction in the independent colleges and the literature review of schema theory,this paper mainly explores how schema theory is applied in the teaching steps of English reading in independent colleges,such as warming up,brainstorming,prediction,presentation of background knowledge,instruction of new words,skimming and scanning,reading the text and critical reading.In the end,the pedagogical implications are proposed.

TOWARDS A REALIZATION OF AN HOLISTIC MODEL OF TEACHING READING IN THE EFL CLASS IN CHINA

The teaching of reading in the EFL class in China is supposed to be the most important course forEnglish learners in colleges and universities because it is expected to fulfil two tasks:the develop-ment of reading skills and the development of language skills.The former set of skills is assigned tothe course called Extensive Reading,which is top-down oriented,and,like the top-down model be-fore 1980’s,its emphasis on the language competence such as syntax and vocabulary often leads to"wild guessing"and misunderstanding.Another reading course,Intensive Reading,is supposed to beresponsible for the latter set of skills.This bottom-up manner of reading often results in word-to-word reading and also causes miscomprehension.The Holistic Model of Reading,as developed on thebasis of interactive models with particular concern over the Chinese learning environment,attemptsto combine the two courses into one and the result,as our studies show,turns out to be promising.

CULTIVATING LEARNERS'WRITING COMPETENCE IN TEACHING READING

TEXTLINGUISTICS AND THE TEACHING OF READING AND WRITING

Cohesion, coherence and controlling are the three main features of a text. Cohesion is the system of formal visible markers, which manifest the semantic relations between sentences. Coherence lies in the deep structure of a text. It refers to the complex non-linear notional-functional relations behind the linear sequences of words or sentences. Controlling is an intuitive semantic key-link, which lies on the topmost level in the hierarchical representation of a text. This thesis attempts to bring these textlinguistic theories in contact with practical issues in language teaching, especially in the teaching of reading and writing. The authors believe that their explorations of the implications of textlinguistie theories on ELT will arouse the interest of other language teachers and meanwhile give them new ideas for their language teaching.

A FOUR STEP APPROACH IN TEACHING READING

Introduction "I…am…a…stu…de…nt…of…Eng…li…sh." This is the way my students read silently in English and it is only one of the problems they have. They are confusing reading aloud and silent reading. It will be difficult for them to use English efficiently after graduation unless they can read in different ways. This article aims to present some suggestions for discussion about teaching reading. The article will be presented in three sections: firstly, the students’ difficulties in reading; secondly, the present teaching work in colleges; thirdly, some possible suggestions for improvement. The third section is divided into four steps, each focusing on a different technique.

SKILLS-BASED TEACHING OF READING COMPREHENSION

IntroductionTeaching English reading in a non-English speaking situation is a very.challenging job.Despite greatefforts made,not much effect is shown.As the importance of reading comprehension is once againstressed,all the teachers and language workers in the college English world in China have been trying todeal with the issue of how best to teach reading comprehension.During the past few years,someimprovement has been made in this field.As ESL workers,we have been teaching English to Chinese medical students,and have also had theexperience of teaching English to Spanish speakers in the USA.What impresses us most is that no matterwhat native language our students speak,they are all very well motivated to learn English in order to meettheir specific needs.Our goal is not only to improve their English language competence,but to makethem become efficient English readers.

MORE STRESS SHOULD BE LAID ON READING IN MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHING IN CHINA

RATIONALE AND PROCEDURES IN THE TEACHING OF INTENSIVE READING

This paper is a product of intensive reading teaching reform practice held in Shantou Universityin 1998,under the instruction of Mr.Black(professor of New York City University).It summarises therational and procedures we used in the teaching practice of intensive reading.Modes of top-down and bot-tom-up processing are introduced,procedures such as skimming,scanning,careful reading,writing,role-playing,presentation and practice are described,particular importance is attached to group work orpair work.The rationale and procedures we put forward in this paper are not revolutionary but a combi-nation of traditional Chinese teacher-centred mode with contemporary western student-centred approachin the teaching of intensive reading in China.However,they have been proved highly efficient and prac-tical,which makes this paper worth reading.
