Statistics from both Canada and the U.S. show a high number of fatalities and serious injuries related to crashes at intersections. In Canada, during 2019, the National Collision Database shows that 28% of traffic fatalities and 42% of serious injuries occurred at intersections. Likewise, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) found that about 40% of the estimated 5,811,000 accidents in the U.S. during the year studied were intersection-related crashes. In fact, a major survey by the car insurance industry found that nearly 85% of drivers could not identify the correct action to take when approaching a yellow traffic light at an intersection. One major reason for these accidents is the “yellow light dilemma,” the ambiguous situation where a driver should stop or proceed forward when unexpectedly faced with a yellow light. This situation is even further exacerbated by the tendency of aggressive drivers to inappropriately speed up on the yellow just to get through the traffic light. A survey of Canadian drivers conducted by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation found that 9% of drivers admitted to speeding up to get through a traffic light. Another reason for these accidents is the increased danger of making a left-hand turn on yellow. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), left turns occur in approximately 22.2% of collisions—as opposed to just 1.2% for right turns. Moreover, a study by CNN found left turns are three times as likely to kill pedestrians than right turns. The reason left turns are so much more likely to cause an accident is because they take a driver against traffic and in the path of oncoming cars. Additionally, most of these left turns occur at the driver’s discretion—as opposed to the distressingly brief left-hand arrow at busy intersections. Drive Safe Now proposes a workable solution for reducing the number of accidents occurring during a yellow light at intersections. We believe this fairly simple solution will save lives, prevent injuries, reduce damage to public and private property, and decrease insurance costs.展开更多

Light Gradien...Addressing classification and prediction challenges, tree ensemble models have gained significant importance. Boosting ensemble techniques are commonly employed for forecasting Type-II diabetes mellitus. Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) is a widely used algorithm known for its leaf growth strategy, loss reduction, and enhanced training precision. However, LightGBM is prone to overfitting. In contrast, CatBoost utilizes balanced base predictors known as decision tables, which mitigate overfitting risks and significantly improve testing time efficiency. CatBoost’s algorithm structure counteracts gradient boosting biases and incorporates an overfitting detector to stop training early. This study focuses on developing a hybrid model that combines LightGBM and CatBoost to minimize overfitting and improve accuracy by reducing variance. For the purpose of finding the best hyperparameters to use with the underlying learners, the Bayesian hyperparameter optimization method is used. By fine-tuning the regularization parameter values, the hybrid model effectively reduces variance (overfitting). Comparative evaluation against LightGBM, CatBoost, XGBoost, Decision Tree, Random Forest, AdaBoost, and GBM algorithms demonstrates that the hybrid model has the best F1-score (99.37%), recall (99.25%), and accuracy (99.37%). Consequently, the proposed framework holds promise for early diabetes prediction in the healthcare industry and exhibits potential applicability to other datasets sharing similarities with diabetes.展开更多

文摘BACKGROUND Chronic wounds that fail to progress through normal phases of healing present a significant healthcare burden owing to prolonged treatment and associated costs.Traditional wound care typically involves regular dressing changes, which can be painful.Recent approaches have explored the use of lidocaine to manage pain and red-light irradiation(RLI),known for its anti-inflammatory and cell proliferation effects,to potentially enhance wound healing.AIM To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of lidocaine wet compression(LWC)combined with RLI for chronic wounds.METHODS We enrolled 150 patients with chronic wounds from the Wound and Ostomy Outpatient Clinic of the Second Hospital of Anhui Medical University from April to September 2022.The wounds were treated with dressing changes. The patients were randomly assigned to the control and experimental groups using a random number table and given the same first dressing change(2%LWC for 5 min and routine dressing change). From the second dressing change,in addition to 2%LWC for 5 min and routine dressing change, the experimental group received RLI,whereas the control group continued to receive the same LWC and dressing change. The first and second dressing changes were performed on days 1 and 2,respectively.The third dressing change was performed 3 d after the second change. The frequency of subsequent dressing changes was determined based on wound exudation and pain.Pain during the first three dressing changes was evaluated in both groups. The average number of dressing changes within 28 d and the degree of wound healing on day 28 were also recorded.RESULTS During the initial dressing change,no noticeable differences were observed in the pain levels experienced by the two groups, indicating similar pain tolerance. However, during the second and third dressing changes, the experimental group reported significantly less pain than the control group.Furthermore, over 28 d,the experimental group required fewer dressing changes than the control group.CONCLUSION Notably, the effectiveness of wound healing on the 28th day was significantly higher in the experimental group than that of in the control group. The combination of LWC and RLI was effective in reducing early-stage pain, promoting wound healing, decreasing the frequency of dressing changes, and enhancing patients’overall quality of life with chronic wounds.

文摘ABSTRACT Embedding submicrocavities is an effective approach to improve the light out-coupling efficiency(LOCE)for planar perovskite light-emitting diodes(PeLEDs).In this work,we employ phenethylammonium iodide(PEAI)to trigger the Ostwald ripening for the downward recrystallization of perovskite, resulting in spontaneous formation of buried submicrocavities as light output coupler. The simulation suggests the buried submicrocavities can improve the LOCE from 26.8 to 36.2%for near-infrared light. Therefore,PeLED yields peak external quantum efficiency(EQE)increasing from 17.3%at current density of 114 mA cm^(−2)to 25.5%at current density of 109 mA cm^(−2)and a radiance increasing from 109 to 487 W sr^(−1)m^(−2)with low rolling-off.The turn-on voltage decreased from 1.25 to 1.15 V at 0.1 W sr^(−1)m^(−2).Besides,downward recrystallization process slightly reduces the trap density from 8.90×10^(15)to 7.27×10^(15)cm^(−3).This work provides a self-assembly method to integrate buried output coupler for boosting the performance of PeLEDs.

文摘Red blood cell(RBC)aggregation as well as their deformation signi¯cantly affects blood microrheology. These processes depend on various factors, one of which is concentration of the nitric oxide, one of the main signaling molecule in the bloodstream. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of nitric oxide on the microrheological properties of red blood cells(RBCs)in RBC samples of various media after the addition of nitric oxide donor sodium nitroprusside in vitro.Microrheological properties were measured using laser aggregometer and ektacytometer based on diffuse light scattering and diffraction of laser light on a suspension of RBCs,respectively. The study found that heparin-stabilized blood showed increased RBC aggregation and deformation with sodium nitroprusside concentrations of 100,and 200M,while EDTA-stabilized blood showed slightly decreased aggregation and unchanged deformation. With washed RBCs in dextran solution, the addition of sodium nitroprusside(in the concentrations of 100,and 200M)resulted in decreased aggregation and increased deformation.These-ndings aid in our understanding of nitric oxide's effect on RBC microrheological properties.
文摘The low level red light irradiation dose that produced positive response on different cell indexes was selected through experiments. In fibroblast detection model, the low level red light irradiation dose that had positive response to the four indicators of mitochondrial membrane potential,ATP release, cell migration and collagen synthesis was screened. The experimental results showed that low level red light with a irradiation dose of 2 J/cm^(2) had a positive response to the above four indexes in fibroblast. The test model on fibroblast was later transferred to dermal papilla cells for further experimental verification. The results showed that low level red light with a irradiation dose of 2 J/cm^(2) also had a positive response to the four indicators of dermal papilla cells, namely, mitochondrial membrane potential,ATP release, cell proliferation rate and collagen synthesis. It is proved that the low level red light with a irradiation dose of 2 J/cm^(2) could improve the mitochondrial function, cell migration and collagen synthesis of fibroblast and dermal papilla cell, thus providing energy for cell activities, improving cell repair ability and cell anti-aging ability.
文摘1.Light intensity physical activity(PA)benefits health PA guidelines worldwide recommend that adults accumulate 150 min of moderate intensity or 75 min of vigorous intensity PA(moderate-to-vigorous PA(MVPA))weekly to achieve health benefits.1-3 Absent from these guidelines are recommendations for light intensity PA(LPA,e.g.,walking at a leisurely pace of 3 km/h or less, equivalent to 1.5-2.9 metabolic equivalents).

文摘Light levels determine regeneration in stands and a key concern is how to regulate the light environment of different stand types to the requirements of the understory. In this study,we selected three stands typical in south China(a Cryptomeria japonica plantation,a Quercus acutissima plantation, and a mixed stand of both)and three thinning intensities to determine the best understory light environ-ment for 3-year-old Phoebe bournei seedlings. The canopy structure, understory light environment, and photosynthe-sis and growth indicators were assessed following thin-ning.Thinning improved canopy structure and understory light availability of each stand;species composition was the reason for differences in the understory light environ-ment.Under the same thinning intensity, the mixed stand had the greatest light radiation and most balanced spectral composition.P.bournei photosynthesis and growth were closely related to the light environment;all three stands required heavy thinning to create an effective and sustained understory light environment. In a suitable understory light environment, the efficiency of light interception, absorption, and use by seedlings was enhanced, resulting in a higher carbon assimilation the main limiting factor was stomatal conductance. As a shade-avoidance signal,red/far-red radia-tion is a critical factor driving changes in photosynthesis and growth of P.bournei seedlings, and a reduction increased light absorption and use capacity and height:diameter ratios. The growth advantage transformed from diameter to height, enabling seedlings to access more light. Our findings suggest that the regeneration of shade-tolerant species such as P.bournei could be enhanced if a targeted approach to thinning based on stand type was adopted.

文摘Purpose:The aim of the current study was to investigate the association of accelerometer-measured sleep duration and different intensities of physical activity(PA)with the risk of incident type 2 diabetes in a population-based prospective cohort study.Methods:Altogether,88,000 participants(mean age=62.2±7.9 years, mean±SD)were included from the UK Biobank.Sleep duration(short:<6 h/day;normal:6-8 h/day;long:>8 h/day)and PA of different intensities were measured using a wrist-won accelerometer over a 7-day period between 2013 and 2015.PA was classified according to the median or World Health Organization-recommendation:total volume of PA(high,low),moderate-to-vigorous PA(MVPA)(recommended, not recommended),and light-intensity PA(high, low).Incidence of type 2diabetes was ascertained using hospital records or death registries. Results:During a median follow-up of 7.0 years,1615 incident type 2 diabetes cases were documented.Compared with normal sleep duration, short(hazard ratio(HR)=1.21,95%confidence interval(95%CI):1.03-1.41)but not long sleep duration(HR=1.01,95%CI:0.89-1.15)was associated with excessive type 2 diabetes risk. This increased risk among short sleepers seems to be protected against by PA.Compared with normal sleepers with high or recommended PA,short sleepers with low volume of PA(HR=1.81,95%CI:1.46-2.25),not recommended(below the World Health Organization-recommended level of)MVPA(HR=1.92,95%CI:1.55-2.36),or low light-intensity PA(HR=1.49,95%CI:1.13-1.90)had a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, while short sleepers with a high volume of PA(HR=1.14,95%CI:0.88-1.49),recommended MVPA(HR=1.02,95%CI:0.71-1.48),or high light-intensity PA(HR=1.14,95%CI:0.92-1.41)did not.Conclusion:Accelerometer-measured short but not long sleep duration was associated with a higher risk of incident type 2 diabetes.A higher level of PA,regardless of intensity, potentially ameliorates this excessive risk.

文摘Light is an important environmental signal that influences plant growth and development.Among the photoreceptors, phytochromes can sense red/far-red light to coordinate various biological processes. However, their functions in strawberry are not yet known. In this study,we identified an EMS mutant, named P8,in woodland strawberry(Fragaria vesca)that showed greatly increased plant height and reduced anthocyanin content.Mapping-by-sequencing revealed that the causal mutation in FvePhyB leads to premature termination of translation. The light treatment assay revealed that FvePhyB is a bona fide red/far-red light photoreceptor,as it specifically inhibits hypocotyl length under red light.Transcriptome analysis showed that the FvePhyB mutation affects the expression levels of genes involved in hormone synthesis and signaling and anthocyanin biosynthesis in petioles and fruits. The srl mutant with a longer internode is caused by a mutation in the DELLA gene FveRGA1(Repressor of GA1)in the gibberellin pathway. We found that the P8 srl double mutant has much longer internodes than srl, suggesting a synergistic role of FvePhyB and FveRGA1 in this process.Taken together, these results demonstrate the important role of FvePhyB in regulating plant architecture and anthocyanin content in woodland strawberry.
文摘Epilepsy is synonymous with individuals suffering repeated“fits”or seizures. The seizures are triggered by bursts of abnormal neuronal activity, across either the cerebral cortex and/or the hippocampus. In addition, the seizure sites are characterized by considerable neuronal death.Although the factors that generate this abnormal activity and death are not entirely clear, recent evidence indicates that mitochondrial dysfunction plays a central role.Current treatment options include drug therapy, which aims to suppress the abnormal neuronal activity,or surgical intervention, which involves the removal of the brain region generating the seizure activity.However,~30%of patients are unresponsive to the drugs, while the surgery option is invasive and has a morbidity risk.Hence, there is a need for the development of an effective non-pharmacological and non-invasive treatment for this disorder, one that has few side effects. In this review,we consider the effectiveness of a potential new treatment for epilepsy, known as photobiomodulation, the use of red to near-infrared light on body tissues.Recent studies in animal models have shown that photobiomodulation reduces seizure-like activity and improves neuronal survival.Further,it has an excellent safety record, with little or no evidence of side effects, and it is non-invasive.Taken all together, this treatment appears to be an ideal treatment option for patients suffering from epilepsy, which is certainly worthy of further consideration.

文摘Chlorophyll,a green pigment in photosynthetic organisms,is generated by two distinct biochemical pathways, the tetrapyrrole biosynthetic pathway(TBP) and the methylerythritol 4-phosphate(MEP)pathway.MEP is one of the pathways for isoprenoid synthesis in plants, with 4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-enyl diphosphate reductase(HDR) catalyzing its last step.In this study,we isolated a greenrevertible yellow leaf mutant gry3 in rice and cloned the GRY3 gene, which encodes a HDR participating in geranylgeranyl diphosphate(GGPP) biosynthesis in chloroplast.A complementation experiment confirmed that a missense mutation(C to T) in the fourth exon of LOC_Os03g52170 causes the gry3 phenotype.Under high temperature and high light, transcript and protein abundances of GRY3 were reduced in the gry3 mutant.Transcriptional expression of chlorophyll biosynthesis, chloroplast development, and genes involved in photosynthesis were also affected.Excessive reactive oxygen species accumulation, cell death, and photosynthetic proteins degradation were occurred in the mutant. The content of GGPP was reduced in gry3 compared with Nipponbare, resulting in a stoichiometric imbalance of tetrapyrrolic chlorophyll precursors. These results shed light on the response of chloroplast biogenesis and maintenance in plants to high-temperature and high-light stress.

文摘The impact of cyclodextrins(CDs)on wine quality and stability remains largely unknown. This study systematically assessed the protective effect of the post-fermentation addition of CDs on color stability of red wine from the viewpoints of color characteristics, copigmentation and phenolic profiles. The grey relational analysis(GRA)and principal component analysis(PCA)methods were employed to dissect the key effective determinants related to color quality. The addition of CDs induced a significant hyperchromic effect of 8.19-25.40%,a significant bathochromic effect and an enhancement of the color intensity.Furthermore, the evolution of anthocyanin forms and the content of monomeric anthocyanins revealed that β-CD is a superior favorable cofactor during wine aging, but for long-term aging,2-HP-β-CD and 2-HP-γ-CD are more beneficial in promoting the formation of polymerized anthocyanins and color stability. This work provides an important reference for the use of CDs to enhance the color quality and stability of red wines.
文摘Addressing classification and prediction challenges, tree ensemble models have gained significant importance. Consequently, the proposed framework holds promise for early diabetes prediction in the healthcare industry and exhibits potential applicability to other datasets sharing similarities with diabetes.
