The experiments included the application of ultrasonic vibrations to the molten alloys via direct and indirect techniques. Several process parameters such as pouring temperatures(several temperatures between 740 and 660℃), and treatment time(from 12 min down to 2 min) were investigated. The experiment included continuous ultrasonic treatment from the liquid to the semisolid states. The results showed that both treatment techniques were viable for producing billets with the desirable microstructural characteristics. The optimum treatment conditions were the short treatment time(2 to 3 min), from about 660℃ down to 615℃ for the indirect treatment technique, and from 660℃ to 635℃ for the direct treatment technique. The resulting microstructures, at three positions along the height of the ingot, were characterized by fine, non-dendritic α(Al) grains in the order of a hundred microns, as compared to few thousands of microns for the conventional cast ingots. The intermetallic particles were also refined in size and modified in morphology by the ultrasonic treatment. The operating mechanisms by which the ultrasonic vibrations altered the ingot microstructures were discussed and analyzed.展开更多

The effects of the pouring temperature, number of curves in the serpentine channel, and material of the serpentine channel on the size of primary Si grains in the semi-solid A1-20%Si alloy slurry were investigated. The results showed that the pouting temperature, number of the curves, and material of the channel strongly affected the size and distribution of the primary Si grains. The pouring tempera- ture exerted the strongest effect, followed by the number of the curves and then the material of the channel. Under experimental conditions of a four-curve copper channel and a pouring temperature of 701℃, primary Si grains in the semi-solid A1-20%Si alloy slurry were refined to the greatest extent, and the lath-like grains were changed into granular grains. Moreover, the equivalent grain diameter and the average shape coefficient of primary Si grains in the satisfactory semi-solid A1-20%Si alloy slurry were 24.4 μm and 0.89, respectively. Finally, the re- finement mechanism and distribution rule of primary Si grains in the slurry prepared through the serpentine channel pouring process were analyzed and discussed.展开更多

During the casting of a real component, nearly every procedure in the fabrication process will influence the grain refinement effect. The procedure may include and may not be limited to the chemical inoculations, possibly applied physical fields, the interfere between grain refiner and purifications, and the casting techniques with different processing parameters. This paper reviews the recent advances and proposed future developments in these categories on grain refinement of cast Mg-RE alloys. The review will provide insights for the future design of grain refinement techniques, the choosing of processing parameters, and coping strategies for the failure of coarsening for cast Mg-RE components with high quality and good performance.展开更多

In the present work, the grain refinement mechanism of MgO in pure Mg,Mg-3Al and AZ31(Mg-2.9Al-0.9Zn-0.3Mn) alloys is investigated by combing first-principles calculations and experiments. The theoretical results show that solute atoms adsorption will affect the nucleation and the subsequent growth process, which is an important factor affecting the refinement efficiency. A contradiction between the experimental results and the grain growth restriction factor(GRF) theory is observed, that is the refinement ratio of AZ31 is worse than Mg-3Al alloy. This is explained by an adsorption model which reveals that Al promotes the adsorption of Mg on MgO surface so as to stimulate more particles available as nucleating sites. Meanwhile, Fe and Mn also have favorable effects on the adsorption of Mg, Zn may play the opposite role compared to Al. The theoretical analyzes provide a strong support to the experiments that Al benefits the initial nucleation of α-Mg on MgO to promote the grain refining effect of Mg-3Al prior to AZ31 alloy.展开更多

This review firstly demonstrates the importance of grain refinement in improving strength of Mg alloys by comprehensively comparing with other strategy, e.g., precipitation strengthening. Dynamic recrystallization(DRX) plays a crucial role in refining grain size of Mg wrought alloys. Therefore, secondly, the DRX models, grain nucleation mechanisms and the related grain refinement abilities in Mg alloys are summarized, including phase boundary, twin boundary and general boundary induced recrystallization. Thirdly, the newly developed low-RE containing Mg alloy, e.g., Mg-Ce, Mg-Nd and Mg-Sm based alloys, and the RE-free Mg alloys, e.g., Mg-Al, Mg-Zn, Mg-Sn and Mg-Ca based alloy, are reviewed, with the focus on enhancing the mechanical properties mainly via the grain refinement strategy. At the last section, the perspectives and outstanding issues concerning high-performance Mg wrought alloys are also proposed. This review is meant to promote the deep understanding on the critical role of grain refinement in Mg alloys and provide reference for the development of other high strength and low-cost Mg alloys which are fabricated by the conventional extrusion/rolling processing.展开更多

文摘The objective of the current study was to investigate the use of ultrasonic melt treatment technology in the production of grain-refined billets of the AC7 A alloy, which was intended for subsequent use as a feedstock in forming operations. The operating mechanisms by which the ultrasonic vibrations altered the ingot microstructures were discussed and analyzed.

文摘In this study, a serpentine channel pouring process was used to prepare the semi-solid A1-20%Si alloy slurry and refine primary Si grains in the alloy. Finally, the re- finement mechanism and distribution rule of primary Si grains in the slurry prepared through the serpentine channel pouring process were analyzed and discussed.
文摘Nucleation sites of α-Al grains after addition of an Al-Ti-B master alloy into pure aluminium have been investigated using EPMA. The results show that either TiAl3 or boride particales can nucleate α-Al grains. But the number of TiAl3 nucleants is reduced with the holding time prolonged and the boride-nuclei are increasing gradually. Based on these results, a new refining method, adding molten Al-Ti-B into commercially pure aluminium, which has a quicker and better refining efficiency is presented.
文摘The formation reason and elimination method of non-uniform microstructure defects in Ti al- loy TC11 bar have been studied. The coagulating and coarsening into block of the part of grain boundary α and secondary α seem to be caused by the ingot cogging and initial forging temperature in the β region as well as no more enough deformation and uneven distribution. The grain α,elongated α and blocky α may be finally eliminated by adopting the technique of (α+β)thermomechanical processing+β processing,W.Q.+recrystallization annealing,A.C., thus the size of uniform and fine equiaxed α structure is believed to be reduced to 1.9258μm.

文摘Additive manufacturing(AM)of Mg alloys has become a promising strategy for producing complex structures, but the corrosion performance of AM Mg components remains unexploited. In this study, wire and arc additive manufacturing(WAAM)was employed to produce single AZ31 layer. The results revealed that the WAAM AZ31 was characterized by significant grain refinement with non-textured crystallographic orientation, similar phase composition and stabilized corrosion performance comparing to the cast AZ31.These varied corrosion behaviors were principally ascribed to the size of grain, where cast AZ31 and WAAM AZ31 were featured by micro galvanic corrosion and intergranular corrosion, respectively.

文摘High-performance cast magnesium rare-earth(Mg-RE) alloys are one of the most important materials among all developed Mg alloy families, and have shown great potential in military and weapons, aerospace and aviation, orthopedic implants, etc. Controlling grain size and distribution of it is key to the promising mechanical performance of Mg-RE alloy casting components. The review will provide insights for the future design of grain refinement techniques, the choosing of processing parameters, and coping strategies for the failure of coarsening for cast Mg-RE components with high quality and good performance.

文摘Ti is regarded as one of the promising grain refiners in cast Al-Li-Cu alloys, but few research works have been done on its independent role.In this study, the effect of Ti on the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of cast Al-2Li-2Cu-0.5Mg base alloy was investigated. The results revealed that the grains can be prominently refined with the increase of Ti addition. After adding Ti,high density TiB_(2)-Al_(3)Ti composite particles with a low lattice misfit form as heterogeneous nucleation sites for the α-Al matrix.δ’(Al3Li) and T_(1)(Al_(2)CuLi) precipitates that provide enhanced strength are dominated in the alloys after T6 aging treatment. The average size of both δ’ and half-width of δ’-precipitation free zone(PFZ) decreases gradually with the increase of Ti content. This is because the higher binding energy between Ti atoms and vacancies limits the diffusion efficiency of Li atoms, and thus results in a higher ductility.Additionally,no nano-sized Al_(3)Ti or core-shell structure of Al_(3)(Li,Ti) particles are found. The tensile property test results indicate that the Al-2Li-2Cu-0.5Mg alloy achieves optimal properties after aging at 175 °C for 32 h when 0.15wt.% Ti is added. It exhibits a yield strength of 352±5 MPa,an ultimate tensile strength of 423±6 MPa,and an elongation of(3±0.4)%.These findings are expected to offer a reliable theoretical guidance for the industrial composition design of the Al-Li-Cu series cast alloys.

文摘The effects of different complex shear stress conditions on grain refinement and texture evolution of Mg-13Gd-4Y-2Zn-0.5Zr alloy were investigated. With increasing strain rate, the average grain size of compression-shear(CS)and compression-torsion(CT)samples are decreased, and the grain size of dynamic recrystallization(DRX)grains is also decreased. This is because that the precipitation number ofβphases is increased, and the hindering effect on grain growth can be significantly enhanced. The DRX fractions of CS and CT samples are decreased with increased strain rate. The low DRX fraction at high strain rate is related to the insufficient time for grains to nucleate. The DRX process can be promoted by the PSN mechanism of second phases, and the grain growth can be restricted by the pinning effect. At the same time, the texture strength is enhanced as the strain rate increased.Besides, the kinking degree of lamellar long-period stacking ordered(LPSO)phases is increased.Under complex shear stress conditions,non-basal slip, especially pyramidal slip,is easily activated and the texture is deflected greatly.Compared with the CS samples,CT samples have smaller average grain size, higher DRX fraction, and lower texture strength for a certain strain rate. This is because that the equivalent stress of the CT sample is larger, the stress triaxiality is smaller,so more serious dislocations are piled up near grain boundaries and second phases. At the same time, since CT sample was sheared with torsion, the dislocation movement path can be called“rotational dislocation accumulation”,and the longer distribution path of the CT sample is generated,so more sub-grains and low-angle grain boundaries(LAGBs)are formed.Compared with the CS sample, more huge-angle grain boundaries(HAGBs)and DRX grains are formed from grain boundary to grain interior,so better grain refinement effect is achieved.

文摘The introduction of oxide inclusions during the smelting process has a clear promising heterogeneous nucleation potency on Mg-based alloys, but the mechanism has not been explored clearly yet. The theoretical analyzes provide a strong support to the experiments that Al benefits the initial nucleation of α-Mg on MgO to promote the grain refining effect of Mg-3Al prior to AZ31 alloy.

文摘Microstructural evolution and strengthening mechanisms of Mg-3Sn-1Ca based alloys with additions of different amounts of Al N nanoparticles were investigated. It was found that with increasing the amount of AlN nano-particles the grain size decreases obviously. The existence of AlN nano-particles could refine the primary crystal phases CaMgSn,which provided more heterogeneous nucleation sites for the formation of magnesium. Moreover, such nano-particles could also restrict the grain growth during solidification. After adding AlN nano-particles,both the tensile properties at room temperature and high temperature 250℃and the hardness are largely improved. The improvement of strength is attributed to grain refinement and second phase refinement.

文摘Low absolute strength becomes one major obstacle for the wider applications of low/no rare-earth(RE) containing Mg alloys. This review is meant to promote the deep understanding on the critical role of grain refinement in Mg alloys and provide reference for the development of other high strength and low-cost Mg alloys which are fabricated by the conventional extrusion/rolling processing.

文摘A bulk nanocrystalline AZ31B Mg alloy with extraordinarily high strength was prepared via cryogenic rotary swaging in this study. The obtained alloy shows finer grains, higher strength, and a negligible tension-compression yield asymmetry, compared with that prepared via room-temperature rotary swaging.Transmission electron microscopy investigations showed that at the initial stage, multiple twins, mostly tension twins, were activated and intersected with each other, thereby refining the coarse grains into a fine lamellar structure. Then, two types of nanoscale subgrains were generated with increasing swaging strain. The first type of nanoscale subgrain contained twin boundaries and low-angle grain boundaries. This type of subgrain appeared at the twin-twin intersections and was mainly driven by high local stress. The second type of nanoscale subgrain was formed within the twin lamellae. The boundaries of this type of subgrain did not contain twin boundaries and were transformed from massive dislocation arrays. Finally, randomly oriented nanograins were obtained via dynamic recrystallization, under the combined function of deformation heat and increased stored energy.Compared with room-temperature rotary swaging, cryogenic rotary swaging exhibits a slower grain refinement process but a remarkably enhanced grain refinement effect after the same five-pass swaging.
