Assessing Flexible Places for Adaptive Urban Design:A New Method and the Case of Cittaducale

Each place has its own peculiarities,determining that the resilience and adaptation to diverse types of risks will be different,requiring different time and methods for mitigation as well.The coexistence of several risks determines further resolution difficulties as commonly,since risks are sudden and unforeseen,there is a tendency to treat the last risk more carefully,neglecting the previous one even if it is just as important.Most of the methodologies used to analyse areas affected by different risks are aimed at focusing in particular on seismic risks without considering those relating to intangible aspects linked to the identity of the places or aspects related to urban health and liveability.And,more in general,in relation to design aspects,urban methodologies do not consider all the results of the analyses,maybe for the difficulty deriving from translating the complexity of collected data in project interventions.Starting from these premises,the objective of the article,elaborated within the SISMI and PRIN 2020 research projects is to propose an original methodology capable of analysing the places affected by multiple risks and planning its resilience attentive to its cultural resources and to its liveability.To this end,the proposed method will be aimed at creating flexible and adaptive places and the case-study of Cittaducale will be illustrated.Criticalities and qualities of this place affected by an earthquake in 2016 will be reported and project interventions to transform its risks into opportunities will be shown.

Analysis of Spatial Configuration of Wenshufang in Chengdu City from the Perspective of Urban Design

Figure-ground theory,linkage theory and place theory of Roger Trancik were applied,field investigation,photo-taking and inductive analysis combined to analyze spatial configuration of urban historic blocks,physical environment,wills of people and also interaction between human behavior and environment in Wenshufang,Chengdu City of Sichuan Province.The results showed that on the basis of a clear bidimensional virtual-real structure,"linear parameters" and "dynamic structures" of spatial connection were established for Wenshufang,environment elements and humanistic needs of the place were respected,connection vitality of lane and yard spaces maintained.In this way,Wenshufang successfully inherited Buddhist cultures and folk cultures,providing a useful reference for the protection and research on historic blocks in other cities.

A heuristic design method for batch water-using networks of multiple contaminants with regeneration unit

This work develops a heuristic method for the design of batch water-using networks of multiple contaminants with regeneration unit based on the concepts of concentration potential. A water-using network involving regeneration unit can be formed by adding the regenerated stream(s) into the network involving reuse only. In the design procedure of the network operated in a single batch mode, time is take n as the primary factor a nd con centration potentials as the secondary one. For the networks operated in a repeated mode, the design procedure is similar to that for continuous processes, besides designing the storage tanks with the rules proposed. Continuous regeneration unit is selected in this work. With the proposed method, the network structure corresponding to the minimum freshwater consumption can be obtained. It is shown that the method proposed in this article is simple, effective and has clear engineering meaning.

Renovation of Urban Green Space Based on Regeneration of Historical Place——A Case Study of Jianqiao Historical Block in Hangzhou

The protected historical blocks always fail to undertake some necessary functions of modern cities because they inherit texture and skyline of historical spaces,and also traditional building density,so these blocks lack in popularity and fall into rigid display of folk customs.In view of the contradiction between protection and vitality,this study proposes the concept of"intergrowth between underground space and urban block"on the basis of theoretic researches and construction practices,aims at renovating urban public green spaces by following the principle of regeneration of place,so as to improve and make up modern urban functions of historical blocks,stimulate vitality of the community,provide an effective solution to the development of new cities and renovation of old cities.

New Strategy and Kinetic Energy Regeneration for the Developmen of China’s Urban Agglomeration

The rapid development of modern urban agglomerations has reshaped the territory of China’s economic geography and reconstructed the spatial forms of Chinese cities and regions.Since the reform and opening-up,China’s urban agglomerations have experienced three stages,i.e.spontaneous cultivation,rapid growth,and the super leading role of planning.The gian development area composed of super urban agglomerations is becoming an emerging geographic unit that improves the urban development quality promotes regional integration processes and participates in global industria competition and innovative resource allocations in China.While encountering challenges such as insufficient innovation kinetic energy and implementation difficulties of cross-regional coordination mechanisms,it has also ushered in new opportunities brought about by the shift of the global urban network system focus,the accelerated formation of high-speed rail urban belts,the rise of innovative geographic unit communities,etc.As entering the new era,centering on the high-quality development requirements of urbanization and urban agglomerations,China should establish a new mechanism for more effective coordinated regional development,build an urban pattern of coordinated development of large,medium and small cities and towns with urban agglomerations as the main body,comprehensively enhance the competitiveness of urban agglomerations and regions,and take a steady and innovation-driven road to modernization.

Urban Regeneration： Better Cities for Sustainable Development

With the increasing growing of the environmental issues and climatic change, sustainable urban development of cities became an urgent demand. Urban development relied on four pillars; the institutional, social, environmental and economic pillars. Urban regeneration is not a single concept; it is a group of strategies. This study concluded that those strategies include; the public action, certification programs and corporate responsibility theories.

The Economic Effect of the Housing Refurbishment in Urban Regeneration

With the increasing ratio of self-owned housing, the demand for new building as gradually reduced. In other words, the demand of refurbishment becomes more urgent. The major objective of this paper is to explore and investigate the consumer behavior of housing renovation. We plan to explore the direct effects of housing refurbishment or restoration on the housing prices, and then the indirect effects of an externality spilled over to the neighbor. We will understand the overall effects to provide a preliminary estimate of the changing in the economic value resulting from the change in the housing refurbishment or restoration of buildings. This research also dig into how the effects in the housing refurbishment or restoration in Taipei city ＆ Kaohsiung city. The purpose is to investigate the driving force on the housing restoration. This study will be the empirical study on the economic values by using hedonic price model. The result will be useful on the decision-making on the urban regeneration by the way of housing restoration and suggests that property owners of a housing estate will benefit from participating on refurbishment in Taiwan.

Urban Regeneration Challenge： The Case of Avenidas Novas District in Lisbon

This paper aims at presenting the guidelines for an urban regeneration strategy in Lisbon, having in account the principles of urbanity, density, livability and social and territorial cohesion. The case study will be Avenidas Novas district, in Lisbon, Portugal, as it is a paradigmatic example of a central area which coexists with dynamism and decadence. The development model for Avenidas Novas was inspired on French boulevards and was planned to be the modem face of a medium to high social class population, as it was until 1940s. Today, as a consequence of further developments which corrupted the first principles and concept, its urban fabric is becoming less coherent and adequate to the needs of the population who works and lives there. From an analysis to the various components of the urban fabric, the paper will identify the major problems that are happening on the site, related to accessibility, mobility and functional diversity. Once understanding the impacts of an unsustainable territory management and urban design, the goal is to develop the principles for a creative urban regeneration strategy for Avenidas Novas district. The study will be based on the theoretical issues of the compact city and walkable distances in order to develop quantifying parameters of urban quality and to promote human scale public spaces and territorial cohesion on an urban environment.

Natural Regeneration of Marker Species of the Tropical Dense Humid Ecosystems in the Loukaya Peri-Urban Forest, Brazzaville-Congo

The study aimed at evaluating the natural regeneration of some characteristic species in the Loukaya peri-urban forest was carried out in Brazzaville, over three surveys of one hectare each. The botanical inventory of the 23 species monitored covers the subjects of 2 ≤ d0.20 < 10 cm and d1.30 ≥ 10 cm. The study shows 1255 individuals of which 68.27% are 2 ≤ d0.20 < 10 cm. While being tropophilic and mesophilic, this ecosystem is pauciflorous and paucispecific. The phytoecological data show that this formation, which is a link in the African dense humid forest, presents values far below those known elsewhere;while being faithful to the forests of the Cataractes Plateau. As for the rate of natural regeneration, this index is greater than or equal to 100 for 69.56% of the taxa. Sarcochores and heliophytes are the taxa that best support this natural regeneration. This high rate of regeneration would be correlated with the high level of anthropization, whose large canopy gaps are accompanied by a flow of light conducive to the installation of seedlings.

Formation of Better Streets: Interpretation of Urban Design Guidelines for Beijing Street Regeneration and Governance

As a showcase for public well-being and urban identity, a better street should carry not only the constantly flowing traffic stream, but also diversified lifestyles and various streetscapes. Beijing is the capital of China, one of its ancient capitals, and a tier 1 international metropolis, both its street connotation and functions are extremely complex. Along with new requirements proposed in the Beijing City Master Plan(2016 – 2035) for controlling construction land, strengthening urban identity, and improving urban governance, the Urban Design Guidelines for Beijing Street Regeneration and Governance(the Guidelines) is not only an important breakthrough point for promoting urban transformation to sustainable urban regeneration and governance, but also the foundation of optimizing capital city construction and building a world-class, harmonious, and livable capital city. Taking full consideration of value orientation, technical methods, system design, and governance transformation, the Guidelines adopts five measures, including identity enhancement, coordinated design, enhancing cultural and aesthetic quality, building platforms, and managing 'stubborn diseases' – problems which have plagued people for many years and have been intensifying with years to pass, to comprehensively improve the street design and governance, in the hope of making it a real typical space that represents the image and cultural charm of the capital city.

Enlightenment from Urban Design Teaching in Blekinge Institute of Technology for Landscape Architecture Education in China

Emphasis on and popularization of education has pushed Sweden,an economically developed country in north Europe,to the rapid urbanization,and the country is also known as a modern welfare society with social liberalism and pursuit of equity. Against this background,higher education in Sweden has its own special properties. Urban design education in Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona,south Sweden,was taken for example,and its successful experience in specialized courses,contents and teaching modes was analyzed,and its signifi cant referential value for the current landscape architecture education in China was proposed.

Study on Urban Design of Luohu Railway Station Area from the Perspective of Integrated Urban Design

Traffic hub in modern cities has gradually evolved into a multi-functional, all-around and three-dimensional complex. Based on the integrated thinking and relevant urban design theories, this paper took Shenzhen Luohu Railway Station for example, evaluated the status quo of the study area from the perspectives of spatial form and public space, including traffic space, square, walking space, green space and waterfront system, and put forward corresponding suggestions.

Application of 3D Digital Technology in Urban Design:A Case Study of Wuhan City

To achieve standardization and facilitation of urban design and 3D demonstration of construction program,and provide technological support for urban design and approval of construction program,this project integrates planning control elements,builds 3D urban design platform and explores functions of the platform on the basis of existing 3D information base.The platform will improve the efficiency of planning management department's controlling over urban spaces and buildings,further play the role of planning department in supporting the urban construction decision making,and also promote the overall city image and quality of urban spaces.

Global Urban Design Research from 2007 to 2017: A Systematic Research Review

Urban design research in the last decade was reported by conducting a bibliometric analysis of the literature published worldwide between 2007 and 2017. The exploratory study aimed to show the origins and frontiers for researchers. The document co-occurrence analysis of keywords and co-citation analysis of references were made in CiteS pace III to explore research basements and research trajectories, emerging trends and new development, together with Bibexcel tools. Physical activities and thermal comfort are two main topics of urban design research that are indirectly connected in some way, and sociological and computer-based research is likely to be strengthened.
