Due to its high packaging strain and shape memory effect, elastic memory composite (EMC) has considerable potential application in future deployable space structures. Buckling of the reinforcing fibers is the primary deformation mechanism of such a new class of functional materials to realize a higher folding strain than that of conventional fiber reinforced composites. In this paper, the orientation of buckling direction of the reinforcing fibers in EMC laminate will be theoretically analyzed to better understand such deformation mechanism. The results reveal that the bucking protruding from the edge produces the lower energy needed for EMC laminate. 展开更多

While various kinds of fibers are used to improve the hot mix asphalt(HMA) performance, a few works have been undertaken on the hybrid fiber-reinforced HMA. Therefore, the fatigue life of modified HMA samples using polypropylene and polyester fibers was evaluated and two models namely regression and artificial neural network(ANN) were used to predict the fatigue life based on the fibers parameters. As ANN contains many parameters such as the number of hidden layers which directly influence the prediction accuracy, genetic algorithm(GA) was used to solve optimization problem for ANN. Moreover, the trial and error method was used to optimize the GA parameters such as the population size. The comparison of the results obtained from regression and optimized ANN with GA shows that the two-hidden-layer ANN with two and five neurons in the first and second hidden layers, respectively, can predict the fatigue life of fiber-reinforced HMA with high accuracy(correlation coefficient of 0.96). 展开更多

The viability of using polypropylene fibers(PPF) in concrete was largely studied. Yet, few of the existing research studies investigated the effects of PPF on the properties of concrete containing recycled concrete aggregate(RCA). Mixes with different RCA replacement ratios and different PPF content were designed and tested. The test results showed that the addition of PPF did not change significantly the compressive strength and the density of the concrete, but slightly decreased its modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio. The drop in the splitting tensile strength and the flexural strength due to RCA inclusions was to a large extent compensated by the PPF addition. The water absorption decreased and the percent voids increased with increased PPF addition. Correlations between the RCA content, the PPF content and the properties of concrete were studied. Useful regression models were proposed to predict the properties of concrete in relevant ranges of RCA and PPF content. 展开更多

In this study,we present the characterization of the carbon fibers recovered from the mechanochemical-enhanced recycling of carbon fiber reinforced fibers. The objectives of the study were to investigate the effect of our modified recycling method on the interfacial properties of recovered fibers. The reinforced plastics were recycled;the recycling efficiency was determined and the recovered fibers were sized using 1 wt%and 3 wt%concentration of(3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane.We characterized the morphologies utilizing the electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis(ESCA),atomic force microscopy(AFM),FTIR-attenuated total reflection(ATR)spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Although the surface of the fibers had no cracks, there was evidence of contaminations which affected the interfacial properties and the quality of the fibers. Results showed that the trends in the recovered and virgin fibers were similar with an increase in sizing concentration. The results highlighted the perspectives of increasing the quality of recovered fibers after the recycling process. 展开更多

This paper presents an experimental investigation on fracture behavior of epoxy resin-carbon fibers composites interleaved with both neat polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers and A1203-PAN nanofibers. In particular, the paper focuses on the effect of adding Al2O3 nanopartiles in PAN nanofibers, which were incorporated in unidirectional (UD) laminates. The effectiveness of adding a thin film made of Al2O3-PAN on the fracture behavior of the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been addressed by comparing the energy release rates, obtained by testing double cantilever beam (DCB) samples under mode I loading condition. A general improvement in interlaminar fracture energy of the CFRP is observed when the both neat PAN nanofibers and Al2O3-PAN nanofibers are interleaved. However, higher interlaminar strength has been observed for the samples with a thin film of Al2O3-PAN nanofibers, suggesting a better stress distribution and stress transformation from resin-rich area to reinforcement phase of hybrid composites. 展开更多

Murals in Mogao Grottoes consist of three parts:support layer, earthen plasters and paint layer. The earthen plasters play a key role in the preservation of murals. It is a mixture of Dengban soil, sand, and plant fiber. Two different natural fibers, hemp fiber and cotton fiber, were reinforced to earthen plasters in the same percentage to evaluate the influence on hygrothermal performance. The two types of earthen plasters were studied:one containing hemp fiber in the fine plaster(HFP)and the other containing cotton fiber in the fine plaster(CFP).Specific heat capacity, dry thermal conductivity, water vapor permeability, and sorption isotherms were investigated. The results showed that the difference between two natural fibers has much more impact on the hygric properties(water vapor permeability and sorption isotherms)of earthen plasters than on their thermal performance(specific heat capacity and dry thermal conductivity). The CFP with higher density has higher thermal conductivity than the HFP with lower density. But no significant differences of specific heat capacity were observed.Compared with HFP,CFP used in murals can reduce the rate of water transfer and prevent salt from transferring water to the mural surface. The overall findings highlight that all these features of CFP are beneficial to the long-term preservation of murals. The study of the earthen plasters in Mogao Grottoes is of general significance, and the measured properties can be used to obtain coupled heat and moisture analysis of the earthen plasters and to dissect the degradation mechanism of murals. 展开更多

The compressive strength and ilexural toughness as well as fracture energy of fiber reinforced highperformance concrete (FRHPC) subjected to different high temperatures were studied. The results showed that after exposure at 300,600 and 900℃, the concrete mixes retained 88.1% , 41.3% and 10.2% of the original compressive strength on average, respectively. Steel fiber and polypropylene (PP) fiber were both effective in minimizing the damage effect of high temperatures on the compressive strength. The HPC reinforced with steel fibers showed higher flexural toughness and fracture energy before and after the high-temperature exposures. In comparison, PP fibers had minor beneficial effects on the flexural toughness and fracture energy. The mechanical properties of HPC reinforced with hybrid fibers (steel fiber + PP fiber) were equivalent to or better than those of HPC reinforced with steel fibers alone. In addition, the failure pattern of FRHPC beams changed from pull-out of steel fibers at lower temperatures (20, 300 and 600℃) to tensile failure of steel fibers at higher temperature (900 ℃). 展开更多

To improve the shear and flexural capacity of flexural members, the steel and basalt fibers were used in model beams tested under flexure. Three series of single span free supported model beams were prepared from SFRC (steel fiber reinforced concrete) with longitudinal steel reinforcement (steel ratio of 1.2 %) and varied spacing of steel stirrups and they were tested till failure. Another three series of BFRC (basalt fiber reinforced concrete) double-span model beams with a span of 2 mm~ 1,000 mm and cross section 180 mm ~ 80 mm were tested. During the tests till to the failure the beam reactions, vertical deflections and horizontal strains in concrete were registered, to clarify the range of redistribution of bending moments and shear forces over the span of the beams. Almost all the tested model beams failed in shear, showing visible influence of steel and basalt fibers on the shear capacity of the tested beams. The tests results confirmed that steel and basalt fibers in reinforced concrete beams can partially replace (in certain cases) the traditional steel stirrups calculated for shear. 展开更多

Herein, we used theoretical and experimental methods to investigate the shear fracture strengths of carbon fiber/epoxy resin interfaces. The shear strengths of carbon fiber and epoxy resin were measured using the microdroplet test, whereas interaction and binding energies were estimated using?Ab initio?and molecular dynamics methods. However, binding energies did not impact the shear strength volumes determined by microdroplet tests,?i.e., bonds between functional groups of the carbon filer and the epoxy resin were difficult to break. On the other hand, the interaction energies calculated for epoxy monomers were in good agreement with experimental data. Moreover, we determined the relationship between the simulated interaction energy and the shear fracture strength volume obtained using the microdroplet test. 展开更多

In this paper,to present a lightweight-developed front underrun protection device(FUPD)for heavy-duty trucks, plain weave carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP)is used instead of the original high-strength steel.First, the mechanical and structural properties of plain carbon fiber composite anti-collision beams are comparatively analyzed from a multi-scale perspective. For studying the design capability of carbon fiber composite materials,we investigate the effects of TC-33 carbon fiber diameter(D),fiber yarn width(W)and height(H),and fiber yarn density(N)on the front underrun protective beam of carbon fiber compositematerials.Based on the investigation,a material-structure matching strategy suitable for the front underrun protective beam of heavy-duty trucks is proposed.Next, the composite material structure is optimized by applying size optimization and stack sequence optimization methods to obtain the higher performance carbon fiber composite front underrun protection beam of commercial vehicles. The results show that the fiber yarn height(H)has the greatest influence on the protective beam, and theH1matching scheme for the front underrun protective beamwith a carbon fiber composite structure exhibits superior performance. The proposed method achieves a weight reduction of 55.21% while still meeting regulatory requirements, which demonstrates its remarkable weight reduction effect. 展开更多

Glued timber structure is one of the main forms of modern wood architecture, which has gradually developed towards mid-and high-rise buildings.Glue-laminated timber(GLT)is comprised of several laminates of parallel-to-grain dimension lumber that are bonded together with durable, moisture resistant structural adhesives.GLT can be used in horizontal applications as a beam and in vertical applications as a post. So,its compressive performance has a significant impact on structural safety.Fiber reinforced polymers(FRPs)were commonly used to improve the bearing capacity of GLT components, and the structural and process parameters largely determined the reinforcement effect. This study was aimed at investigating the influence of structural and process parameters on the axial compression performance of GLT components.Three wrapping methods(middle-part,end-part and full wrapping)and three lengths(0.6,0.8,and 1.0 m)of wood post specimens were designed in this work and the axial compression performance and ductility of GLT post specimens modified by basalt fiber reinforced polymer(BFRP)were studied. The results showed that the effect of different BFRP wrapping methods on the compressive strength and elastic modulus of laminated wood was not statistically significant(P>0.05).The compressive bearing capacity of unreinforced GLT posts decreased with the increase of aspect ratio. The GLT posts with middle-part and end-part wrapping still followed this pattern, while the compressive bearing capacity of GLT posts with full wrapping showed a pattern of first decreasing and then increasing. For GLT with low aspect ratios(4.0 or 5.3),there was no correlation between the wrapping method and the compressive bearing capacity, while the compressive bearing capacity of GLT with a high aspect ratio(6.7)for middle-part,end-part and full wrapping increased by 3.5%,7.5%and 9.7%,respectively.Compared to the unreinforced group, the ultimate axial compressive strength and modulus of elasticity(MOE)of the 6-E series specimens reinforced at both ends decreased by 2.58%and 6.70%,respectively.The ultimate axial compressive strength of the 8-E specimens reinforced at both ends increased by 8.62%and the MOE decreased by 1.91%.The compressive strength of the 10-E specimens reinforced at both ends increased by 7.51%and the MOE increased by 8.14%.The failure modes of GLT with different aspects were consistent under the same BFRP wrapping, while the failure modes of GLT with the same aspect ratio were different for different BFRP wrapping methods. The ductility performance of GLT with different aspects ratio was improved by the BFRP wrapping. 展开更多

The appearance and accumulation of internal impact damage seriously influence overall performance of carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP).Thus, this study evaluates the change in impact damage number by using linear and nonlinear ultrasonic Lamb wave detection methods, and compares these two detection results. An ultrasonic wave simulation model for composite structure with impact damage is established using the finite element method, and the interaction between impact damage and the ultrasonic wave is simulated.Simulation results demonstrate that the ultrasonic amplitude linearly decreases, and the relative nonlinear parameter linearly increases in proportion to the impact number, respectively. The linear-fitting slope of nonlinear parameter is 0.38 per impact number at an input frequency of 1.0 MHz.It is far higher than that of the linear ultrasonic amplitude, which is only-0.12.However,with the increase of impact damage, the linear growth of nonlinear parameters mainly depends on the decrease in ultrasonic amplitude rather than the accumulation of second harmonic amplitude. In the linear ultrasonic amplitude detection, the linear fitting slope at 1.1 MHz is-0.14,which is lower than those at 0.9 MHz and 1.0 MHz.Meanwhile,in the nonlinear ultrasonic parameter detection, the linear fitting slope at 1.1 MHz is 0.92,which is higher than those at 0.9 MHz and 1.0 MHz.The results show that higher frequencies lead to greater attenuation of ultrasonic amplitude and a larger increase in nonlinear parameters, which can enhance the sensitivity of both linear and nonlinear ultrasonic detections. The accuracy of simulation results is demonstrated through the low-velocity impact and ultrasonic experiments. The results show that compared with nonlinear ultrasonic technology, the linear ultrasonic technology is more suitable for impact damage assessment of carbon fiber reinforced plastic because of its simpler detection process and higher sensitivity. 展开更多

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(CFRP)is widely used in aerospace applications. This kind of material may face the threat of high-velocity impact in the process of dedicated service, and the relevant research mainly considers the impact resistance of the material, and lacks the high-velocity impact damage monitoring research of CFRP.To solve this problem,a real high-velocity impact damage experiment and structural health monitoring(SHM)method of CFRP plate based on piezoelectric guided wave is proposed. The results show that CFRP has obvious perforation damage and fiber breakage when high-velocity impact occurs. It is also proved that guided wave SHM technology can be effectively used in the monitoring of such damage, and the damage can be reflected by quantifying the signal changes and damage index(DI).It provides a reference for further research on guided wave structure monitoring of high/hyper-velocity impact damage of CFRP. 展开更多

Damage caused due to low-velocity impacts in composites leads to substantial deterioration in their residual strength and eventually provokes structural failure. This work presents an experimental investigation on the effects of different patch and parent laminate stacking sequences on the enhancement of impact strength of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers(CFRP)composites by utilising the adhesively bonded external patch repair technique.Damage evolution study is also performed with the aid of Acoustic Emission(AE).Two different quasi-isotropic configurations were selected for the parent laminate,viz.,[45°/45°/0°/0°]s and[45°/0°/45°/0°]s.Quasi Static Indentation(QSI)test was performed on both the pristine laminates, and damage areas were detected by using the C-scan inspection technique.Damaged laminates were repaired by using a single-sided patch of two different configurations,viz.,[45°/45°/45°/45°]and[45°/0°/0°/45°],and employing a circular plug to fill the damaged hole.Four different combinations of repaired laminates with two configurations of each parent and patch laminate were produced, which were further subjected to the QSI test. The results reveal the effectiveness of the repair method,as all the repaired laminates show higher impact resistance compared to the respective pristine laminates.Patches of[45°/0°/0°/45°]configuration when repaired by taking[45°/45°/0°/0°]s and[45°/0°/45°/0°]s as parents exhibited 68%and 73%higher peak loads, respectively, than the respective pristine laminates.Furthermore, parent and patch of configuration[45°/0°/45°/0°]s and[45°/0°/0°/45°],respectively,attain the highest peak load,whereas[45°/45°/0°/0°]s and[45°/45°/45°/45°]combinations possess the most gradual decrease in the load. 展开更多

Introduction: This study investigates the Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of Steel and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) Reinforced Slab Incorporating Alccofine and M-sand. Objective: Specific objectives include evaluating the mechanical properties and structural behaviour of steel and GFRP-reinforced one-way slabs and comparing experimental and theoretical predictions. Methods: Four different mix proportions were arrived at, comprising both conventional concrete and Alccofine-based concrete. In each formulation, a combination of normal river sand and M-sand was utilized. Results: Concrete with Alccofine exhibits superior mechanical properties, while M-sand incorporation minimally affects strength but reduces reliance on natural sand. GFRP-reinforced slabs display distinct brittle behaviour with significant deflections post-cracking, contrasting steel-reinforced slabs’ gradual, ductile failure. Discrepancies between experimental data and design recommendations underscore the need for guideline refinement. Conclusion: Alccofine and M-sand enhance concrete properties, but reinforcement type significantly influences slab behaviour. GFRP-reinforced slabs, though exhibiting lower values than steel, offer advantages in harsh environments, warranting further optimization. 展开更多

Reinforced concrete (RC) beams externally bonded with basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) are experimentally investigated by using different numbers of bonding plies, transverse anchorages as well as the initial conditions of strengthened beams. The performances of the BFRP strengthening are compared with those of the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and the glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) under the same experimental condition. Experimental results indicate that the strength and ductility of the strengthened beam with two plies of the BFRP are improved remarkably than those with one ply. The strengthening effects of the BFRP lie between those of the CFRP and the GFRP. The BFRP strengthening is little influenced by pre-cracks of concrete. Most failures are caused by interfaciai debonding induced by flexural cracks in the experiment. Clamping of Uwraps along the whole beam is less efficient than endpoint anchorage for increasing the ultimate load of the strengthened beam. Finally, the models suggested by the five guidelines for predicting the debonding strain of the CFRP are extended to the BFRP and the conservative estimates of the debonding strain of the BFRP are given as well. 展开更多

This paper presents an experimental study on the alkali-resistant properties of basalt fiber reinforced polymers (BFRP) bars under a typical concrete environment. BFRP bars were embedded in concrete and exposed to different aggressive environments, including tap water, saline solution and ambient temperature environments, to study the effects of the type of solution and relative humidity (RH) on the durability of BFRP. Meanwhile, BFRP bars were directly immersed in an alkaline solution for comparison. The acceleration factor describing the relationship between the alkaline solution immersion and the moisture-saturated concrete was also obtained. Aging was accelerated with a temperature of 60 ℃. The results show that the chloridion in the saline solution does not have any harmful effects on the degradation of the concrete-encased BFRP bars. Contact with an alkaline (high pH) concrete pore-water solution is the primary reason for the degradation of the BFRP bars. The degradation rate of concrete-encased BFRP bars is accelerated when a high temperature and a high humidity are present simultaneously. The degradation rate of the BFRP bars is relatively quick at the initial stage and slows down with exposure time. Results show that the degradation of 2.18 years in moisture-saturated concrete at 60 ℃corresponds to that of one year when directly immersed in an alkaline solution (other conditions remaining the same) for the BFRP bars analyzed. 展开更多

The test results of eight concrete beams reinforced with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets subjected to an aggressive environment under a sustained load are presented. The beams are 1 700 mm long with a rectangular cross-section of 120- mm width and 200-mm depth. The beams are precracked with a four-point flexural load, bonded CFRP sheets, and placed into wet-dry saline water( NaCl) either in an unstressed state or loaded to about 30% or 60% of the initial ultimate load. The individual and coupled effects of wet-dry saline water and sustained bending stresses on the long term behaviour of concrete beams reinforced with the CFRP are investigated. The test results show that the coupled action of wet-dry saline water and sustained bending stresses appears to significantly affect the load capacity and the failure mode of beam strengthened with CFRP, mainly due to the degradation of the bond between CFRP and concrete. However, the stiffness is not affected by the coupled action of wet-dry cycles and a sustained load. 展开更多
