Load Profile Analysis for Mitigating Load-Shedding in Central Africa: Case of Kinshasa

Load shedding is a major problem in Central Africa, with negative consequences for both society and the economy. However, load profile analysis can help to alleviate this problem by providing valuable information about consumer demand. This information can be used by power utilities to forecast and reduce power cuts effectively. In this study, the direct method was used to create load profiles for residential feeders in Kinshasa. The results showed that load shedding on weekends results in significant financial losses and changes in people’s behavior. In November 2022 alone, load shedding was responsible for $ 23,4 08,984 and $ 2 80,9 07,808 for all year in losses. The study also found that the SAIDI index for the southern direction of the Kinshasa distribution network was 122.49 hours per feeder, on average. This means that each feeder experienced an average of 5 days of load shedding in November 2022. The SAIFI index was 20 interruptions per feeder, on average, and the CAIDI index was 6 hours, on average, before power was restored. This study also proposes ten strategies for the reduction of load shedding in the Kinshasa and central Africa power distribution network and for the improvement of its reliability, namely: Improved load forecasting, Improvement of the grid infrastructure, Scheduling of load shedding, Demand management programs, Energy efficiency initiatives, Distributed Generation, Automation and Monitoring of the Grid, Education and engagement of the consumer, Policy and regulatory assistance, and Updated load profile analysis. 展开更多

In reliability engineering,the observations of the variables of interest are always limited due to cost or schedule constraints.Consequently,the epistemic uncertainty,which derives from lack of knowledge and information,plays a vital influence on the reliability evaluation.Belief reliability is a new reliability metric that takes the impact of epistemic uncertainty into consideration and belief reliability distribution is fundamental to belief reliability application.This paper develops a new method called graduation formula to construct belief reliability distribution with limited observations.The developed method constructs the belief reliability distribution by determining the corresponding belief degrees of the observations.An algorithm is designed for the graduation formula as it is a set of transcendental equations,which is difficult to determine the analytical solution.The developed method and the proposed algorithm are illustrated by two numerical examples to show their efficiency and future application. 展开更多

Optimal distribution of reliability for a large network based on connectivity

It is a non-polynomial complexity problem to calculate connectivity of the complex network. When the system reliability cannot be expressed as a function of element reliability, we have to apply some heuristic methods for optimization based on connectivity of the network. The calculation structure of connectivity of complex network is analyzed in the paper. The coefficient matrixes of Taylor second order expansion of the system connectivity is generated based on the calculation structure of connectivity of complex network. An optimal schedule is achieved based on genetic algorithms (GA). Fitness of seeds is calculated using the Taylor expansion function of system connectivity. Precise connectivity of the optimal schedule and the Taylor expansion function of system connectivity can be achieved by the approved Minty method or the recursive decomposition algorithm. When error between approximate connectivity and the precise value exceeds the assigned value, the optimization process is continued using GA, and the Taylor function of system connectivity needs to be renewed. The optimization process is called iterative GA. Iterative GA can be used in the large network for optimal reliability attribution. One temporary optimal result will be generated every time in the iteration process. These temporary optimal results approach the real optimal results. They can be regarded as a group of approximate optimal results useful in the real project. 展开更多

Distributed generation, electric vehicles and other active resources will change the behavior of the distribution network in a manner that will have a great deal of implications for distribution substations. The question is how the role of the distribution substations will change when the visions of smart grids become reality. The proposed solution consists of bay level protection and control IEDs forming the backbone of the secondar?, system. The functionality is complemented with a substation level Station Computer, providing value added and advanced functionality. In addition required communication and time synchronization methods are presented. Taking into account the whole system structure and the component reliability estimation uncertainty, a system reliability estimation method based on probability and statistical theory for distributed monitoring systems is presented. The variance and confidence intervals of the system reliability estimation are obtained by expressing system reliability as a linear sum of products of higher order moments of component reliability estimates when the number of component or system survivals obeys binomial distribution. The eigenfunction of binomial distribution is used to determine the moments of component reliability estimates, and a symbolic matrix which can facilitate the search of explicit system reliability estimates is proposed. Furthermore, a case of application is used to illustrate the procedure, and with the help of this example, various issues such as the applicability of this estimation model, and measures to improve system reliability of monitoring systems are discussed. 展开更多

An analytical calculation method for the reliability sensitivity indexes of distribution systems is proposed to explicitly quantify the impact of various influence factors on system reliability.Firstly,the analytical calculation formulas for the reliability indexes of distribution systems are derived based on the fault incidence matrix(FIM).Secondly,the factors that affect system reliability are divided into two categories:quantifiable parameter factors and non-quantifiable network structure factors.The sensitivity indexes for the quantifiable parameter factors are derived using the direct partial derivation of the reliability calculation formulas.The sensitivity indexes for the nonquantifiable network structure factors are derived using the transformation of FIMs.Finally,the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed sensitivity calculation method are verified by applying them to an IEEE 6-bus RBTS system.This paper sums up the factors that influence system reliability in detail and gives the explicit analytical calculation method for the sensitivity of each factor.Repetitive calculation of the reliability index can be avoided during the sensitivity analysis.The bottleneck that affects the reliability level of distribution systems can be identified efficiently,and valuable information and guidance can be provided to enhance the reliability of distribution systems. 展开更多

This study proposes a new method which aims to optimally install tie-lines and distributed generations simultaneously.This is done to optimize the post-outage reconfiguration and minimize energy losses and energy not supplied of distribution systems.The number and location of tie-lines,as well as the number,size,and location of DGs,are pinpointed through teaching the learning-based optimization(TLBO)method.The objective function in the current research is to minimize the costs pertaining to the investment,operation,energy losses,and energies not supplied.In addition to the normal operational condition,fault operational condition is also evaluated.Therefore,the optimal post-fault reconfigurations for fault occurrences in all lines are established.Moreover,the operational constraints such as the voltage and line current limits are taken into account in both normal and post-fault operational modes.Finally,the modified IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus distribution test systems are selected and tested to demonstrate the effectiveness of the simultaneous placement of DGs and tie-line technique proposed in this paper. 展开更多

Based on Wiener process model, a new approach for reliability evaluation of cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE) is proposed to improve the lifetime evaluation reliability of XLPE under multi-stressing conditions and study the failure probability distribution. In this paper, two accelerated aging tests are carried out under combined thermal and vibration conditions. The volume resistance degradation data of XLPE samples are tested with a24 h interval under the accelerated stressing conditions at(130℃, 12 m/s^2) and(150℃, 8.5 m/s^2), respectively.Nonlinear degradation data obtained from the experiment are transformed to linear intermediate-variable values using time scaling function, and then linearized degradation data are calculated and evaluated on the basis of linear Wiener process model. Considering traditional Arrhenius equation and inverse power criterion, parameters of the linear Wiener model are estimated according to the maximum likelihood function. The relationship curves on probability density and reliability are given, and the lifetime distribution of XLPE under different stressing conditions is also obtained for evaluating the reliability of XLPE insulation. Finally, the life expectancy of XLPE is 17.9 a under an allowance temperature of 90℃ and an actual vibration acceleration of 0.5 m/s^2. The approach and results in this paper may be used for reliability assessment of high-voltage multiple samples or apparatuses. 展开更多
