Interpreting Chinese Nursery Rhymes from Mental Space Theory

Although nursery rhymes and other texts for children often involve implausible or even fantastic combinations of elements,children seem to have no trouble following them.The paper tries to account for the phenomenon in perspective of mental space theory,suggesting that children are adept at the sort of mental process called as conceptual integration.

Working-memory training improves developmental dyslexia in Chinese children

Although plasticity in the neural system underlies working memory, and working memory can be improved by training, there is thus far no evidence that children with developmental dyslexia can benefit from working-memory training. In the present study, thirty dyslexic children aged 8-11 years were recruited from an elementary school in Wuhan, China. They received working-memory training including training in visuospatial memory, verbal memory, and central executive tasks. The difficulty of the tasks was adjusted based on the performance of each subject, and the training sessions lasted 40 minutes per day, for 5 weeks. The results showed that working-memory training significantly enhanced performance on the nontrained working memory tasks such as the visuospatial, the verbal domains, and central executive tasks in children with developmental dyslexia. More importantly, the visual rhyming task and reading fluency task were also significantly improved by training. Progress on working memory measures was related to changes in reading skills. These experimental findings indicate that working memory is a pivotal factor in reading development among children with developmental dyslexia, and interventions to improve working memory may help dyslexic children to become more proficient in reading.

Applying the Frame Theory to Translating Animal Metaphors in Cantonese Nursery Rhymes into English

From the perspective of the frame theory,with the analysis of animal metaphors in Cantonese nursery rhymes,this paper discusses the feasible translation strategies,suggesting that direct translation can be adopted for animal metaphors that can evoke the similar cognitive frame in both Cantonese and English cultural contexts.As for those without identical frame,translation without the original vehicle can be used for the metaphors of physicalification,while translation with annotation can be applied for the metaphors of personification.

Our government pays more attention to publicize and preserve traditional culture. Therefore, it becomes an urgent task about how to do research and mining, preserve fine traditional Chinese culture, and enhance the international cultural communication. Rhymed opera proverb as an important part of Chinese opera culture mirrors the ideology and culture in China. The opera proverb is responsible for both inheriting the tradition and developing the ancient art. The biggest challenge is translation which is carrier of culture. Through good translation, we will gain a better understanding of the quintessence of our tradition and of the living embodiment of China and Chinese culture. This paper is intended to study opera proverb translation from the viewpoint of ＂intertextuality＂. The author believes that translation is a type of transforming activity intertextualized with language, text, and culture. Intertextuality theory is applied to investigate the process of translation. Intertextuality will be of great help to the translation of opera proverbs, which means not only to explore and transfer the literal meaning of the source text, but also to interpret and expound the cultural meaning. Only if a translation is reliable and makes sense of traditional culture can our culture be known and appreciated by the world.

On Rhyme and Symmetry in the Translation of Tang Poetry:A Case Study of Xu Yuanchong’s English Translation of 300 Tang Poems

Ancient poetry represents historical and cultural legacies accumulated by the Chinese nation for thousands of years and underpins the strong cultural confidence of the Chinese people.Tang poetry distinguishes itself from other literary works with its beautiful rhyme and symmetry.Previous studies of English translations of Tang poetry mostly focused on appreciation,analysis,and critics of different translation versions.Few researchers have delved into the specific translation methods for achieving the rhyming and symmetrical effects of Tang poetry in the target text.This paper examined Professor Xu Yuanchong’s English translation of 300 Tang Poems as the research object,and elaborated on how to retain the rhyming and symmetrical effects of Tang poems.This paper also summarized some practical methods that can be applied to translating Tang poems.Rhyming can be realized by the addition of end rhyme words and changes in word or line order.Symmetry can be achieved by the omission of a modifier or predicate,the addition of function words,changes in word order,or parallelism with the original sentence structure.

Analysis of Song Lyrics Translation——Taking Viva La Vida and Set Love Free for examples

Based on Katharina Reiss's definition of the audio-medial text, this thesis first makes plain the unique feature of song lyrics translation while differentiating between the above two confusable concepts. Furthermore, it puts forward principles which lay emphasis on the balancing of three yardsticks-rhyming(optional), comprehensibility and loyalty. The first one can add elegance for lyrics translation. The last two requires mediation of intentions among the source writer and the target listener in a particular translational action. The principles are then applied to the evaluation of lyrics translation of two English songs of Viva La Vida and Set Love Free. The conclusion is thus reached that these principles can be used to make lyrics translation.
