In this paper, an experiment has been done producing ring spun cotton yarn directly from finisher drawn sliver eliminating the roving frame. Total 3 types of yarn with the various linear density of 8 Ne, 10 Ne & 12 Ne were produced using a roving frame and without using a roving frame. In the next step, physical and mechanical properties of those yarns including unevenness, imperfections, hairiness & tenacity were investigated. The result showed that ring spun cotton yarns produced from sliver exhibited inferior physical and mechanical properties compared with samples from the conventional ring spinning system.展开更多

Characteristics and design parameters of the air spring are explored in this study. Based on analyses of winding technology for this kind of package, the kinetic laws of the thread guide is put forward. General design equations of the cam profile are derived, and common kinetic laws of II linkage group which is used for such mechanism design is proposed. It proves theoretically that it is practicable. The experimental results indicate that it can meet the needs of technological demands, and the new thread guide mechanism has been used successfully on textile machines.展开更多

Two kinds of roving glass woven fabrics o...In this paper, investigation on the initial fracture behavior was carried out on roving glass woven fabric reinforced composites which were manufactured by hand lay-up method. Two kinds of roving glass woven fabrics of different FAW (Fabric Area Weight) and crimp ratio, Type A of 570 g/m2 and Type B of 800 g/m2, were adopted as reinforcement in this study. Tensile test was conducted and tensile properties were discussed on specimens of 6 degrees 0°/5°/10°/80°/85°/90°. The initial fracture behavior was observed on 0 degree and 90 degree and the fracture mechanism was compared and discussed among 5°/10°/80°/85°. The results showed that Type B has higher tensile modulus and tensile strength than that of Type A. And different initial fracture behaviors between two kinds of materials was observed and analyzed, which indicated that the crimp ratio plays an important role of woven fabric reinforced composites in fracture mechanism.展开更多

The effects of fibre/matrix bonding, fabric density, fibre volume fraction and bundle size on microstructure, mechanical properties and failure mechanisms in carbon fibre reinforced composites (plastic and carbon mat...The effects of fibre/matrix bonding, fabric density, fibre volume fraction and bundle size on microstructure, mechanical properties and failure mechanisms in carbon fibre reinforced composites (plastic and carbon matrix) have been investigated. The microstructure of unloaded and cracked samples was studied by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively whereas the mechanical behaviour was examined by 3- point bending experiments. Exclusively one type of experimental resole type phenolic resin was applied. A strong fibre/matrix bonding, which is needed for high strength of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials leads to severe composite damages during the pyrolysis resulting in low strength, brittle failure and a very low utilisation of the fibres strain to failure in C/C composites. Inherent fabric parameters such as an increasing fabric density or bundle size or a reduced fibre volume fraction introduce inhomogenities to the CFRP's microstructure. Results are lower strength and stiffness whereas the strain to failure increases or remains unchanged. Toughness is almost not affected. In C/C composites inhomogenities due to a reduced bundle size reduce strain to failure, strength, stiffness and toughness. Vice versa a declining fibre volume fraction leads to exactly the opposite behaviour. Increasing the fabric density (weight per unit area) causes similar effects as in CFRPs.展开更多
The adhesion between warp sizing and fiber was systematically studied by using the roving method.Cotton roving and polyester roving were sized with various concentrations between 0.01%and 2.50%of acid-thinned starch,p...The adhesion between warp sizing and fiber was systematically studied by using the roving method.Cotton roving and polyester roving were sized with various concentrations between 0.01%and 2.50%of acid-thinned starch,polyvinyl alcohol and water-soluble polyester sizing,respectively,and tensile property of the sized roving was tested accordingly.The break force of the sized roving was considered as the adhesion force of the sizing to the fiber in the roving method.The experimental results show that the effects of sizing film strength and fiber strength on the adhesive force can be weakened when the concentration 0.5%of size paste is used,instead of 1%in the roving method.The size morphology in the sized roving and on the surface was observed through scanning electron microscopy,in the form of penetration and coverage of the sizing in or on the roving.On the other hand,the Young-Dupréequation was used to calculate the adhesion work.The advantages and disadvantages of roving method and the adhesion work method were compared.The adhesion obtained by both two methods reflects the rule of chemical similarity between warp sizing and fiber.展开更多

Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, is a major cosmopolitan insect pest causing direct and indirect damage to greenhouse-grown horticultural crops. The primary way of managing western flower thrips popu...Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, is a major cosmopolitan insect pest causing direct and indirect damage to greenhouse-grown horticultural crops. The primary way of managing western flower thrips populations is by routinely applying insecticides, which target the aboveground life stages: larvae and adult. However, insecticides are minimally effective against the pupal stages (prepupae and pupae) that reside in the growing medium or soil. Therefore, soil-dwelling biological control agents including: predatory mites [Stratiolaelaps scimitus and Hypoaspis = (Geolaelaps) aculeifer], and a rove beetle, Dalotia coriaria may be a viable option to induce mortality on the pupal stages. These predators will feed on the pupal stages of the western flower thrips and can provide mortality on a life stage that is tolerant of insecticide applications. However, these biological control agents need to be used in conjunction with other plant protection strategies, such as insecticides and/or biological control agents that target the aboveground life stages (larvae and adult) to effectively manage western flower thrips populations in greenhouse production systems.展开更多
