Pure bitumen is not suitable for heavy traffic loads;hence modifiers are used to improve the bitumen performance.Recently,cup lump rubber(CLR)has become a preferred modifier due to its outstanding performance and less...Pure bitumen is not suitable for heavy traffic loads;hence modifiers are used to improve the bitumen performance.Recently,cup lump rubber(CLR)has become a preferred modifier due to its outstanding performance and less cost.However,little is known about the interactions between CLR and bitumen.Thus,this study investigates the behavior of bitumen with CLR.Four percentages of CLR(2.5%,5.0%,7.5%,and 10.0%by weight of bitumen)were used to modify conventional 60/70 penetration grade bitumen.The modified bitumen was evaluated through different laboratory testing such as dynamic shear rheometer,rotational viscosity,softening point,bending beam rheometer,ductility,and elastic recovery.The testing results show that the addition of CLR increased the bitumen’s rutting resistance by 3 PG grades at high temperatures.At low pavement temperatures,the cup lump rubber modified bitumen(CMB)can withstand up to−34℃.Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR)analysis shows that the Aromaticity index at 1600 cm^(−1) rose as the CLR percentage increased,indicating the formation of a binder with a compact structure.This is expected to improve the elasticity of bitumen throughπ-πinteractions.Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM)results showed the Catana phase increased in size and quantity at 5.0%and 7.5%CLR content.While contact angle measurement revealed that the binders are hydrophobic and tend to repel the dropped water on the bitumen surface.展开更多
The road construction industry aims to contribute to the protection of already compromised environment.Cold mix asphalt(CMA)is a measure initiated by the road industry to protect the environment and preserve energy.De...The road construction industry aims to contribute to the protection of already compromised environment.Cold mix asphalt(CMA)is a measure initiated by the road industry to protect the environment and preserve energy.Despite having additional benefits,CMA has attracted little attention due to its inferior performance.CMA's performance is enhanced using a sustainable binder bio-modifier,natural cup lump rubber(CLR)is one of them.This study evaluated the tensile properties,rutting,moisture susceptibility,and adhesion properties of CLR-modified CMA(CMA-CR).The tensile property was enhanced by 26%due to CLR modification.CMA-CR had excellent rutting resistance of less than 2 mm rut depth at 10,000 load cycles,showing 70%improvement compared with conventional CMA.Moisture susceptibility evaluation indicated that CMA-CR had tensile strength ratio(TSR)value of 104%,satisfying the minimum 80%requirement of AASHTO T283.It also retained more than 96%bitumen coating.The moisture damage resistance was improved by 12%and 10%in terms of TSR and stripping,respectively.The durability results revealed that the CMA-CR mixture prevented higher mass loss,representing 14%improvement compared with conventional CMA.展开更多
Dry rubber content(DRC)is an important factor to be considered in evaluating the quality of cup lump rubber.The DRC analysis requires prolonged laboratory validation.To develop fast and effective DRC determination met...Dry rubber content(DRC)is an important factor to be considered in evaluating the quality of cup lump rubber.The DRC analysis requires prolonged laboratory validation.To develop fast and effective DRC determination methods,this study proposed methods to evaluate the DRC of cup lump rubber using different spectroscopic measurement approaches.This involved a complete fundamental analysis leading to an efficient measurement method based on either point-based measurement using NIR reflectance spectrometer or area-based measurement using hyperspectral imaging.A dataset was prepared that 120 samples were randomly divided into a calibration set of 90 samples and a validation set of 30 samples.To obtain an average spectrum to represent a cup lump rubber sample,the spectral data were collected by locating and scanning for point-based and area-based measurement,respectively.The spectral data were calibrated using partial least squares regression(PLSR)and the least-squares support vector machine(LS-SVM)methods against the reference values.The experiments showed that the area-based measurement approach with both algorithms performed outstandingly in predicting the DRC of cup lump rubber and was clearly better than the point-based measurement approach.The best predictions of PLSR represented by the coefficient of determination(R2),the root mean square error of prediction(RMSEP)and the residual predictive deviation(RPD)were 0.99,0.72%and 15.17,while the best prediction of LS-SVM were 0.99,0.64%and 16.83,respectively.In summary,the area-based measurement based on the LS-SVM prediction model provided a highly accurate estimate of the DRC of cup lump rubber.展开更多
