Naipaul's novels are real and acute, which reflect many countries and social realities, especially terrible lives and depressed emotions, including human interests, opinions, ideas, consciousnesses, self-acceptance, idea crisis, looking for identity, spiritual trouble, contradiction between religion and life, cultural conflict in colonized countries and post-colonized areas. Such novels are from actual realities, life facts, street matters with miscellaneous, vicissitudinous, and integrative skills and abilities. 展开更多

Neurodegeneration is one of the biggest public health problems in modern society. Age-associated neurodegeneration, which is accelerated several-fold in Alzheimer's disease (AD) alone, is not only an enormous social and economic burden to the affected in- dividuals and their families, but is also a great scientific challenge. Currently 25-35 million people worldwide suffer from AD, the single largest cause of dementia in middle- to old-aged individuals. These numbers are projected to triple by 2050 if no treatment to prevent or reverse AD is developed. 展开更多

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the most common motor neurode- generative disorder affecting approximately 4 million people worldwide. Although PD presents primarily with motor dysfunction, non-motor symptoms including cognitive decline, mood disorders, reduced olfaction and constipation are also of- ten present, with some of these non-motor symptoms even pre- senting prior to the onset of motor symptoms. It is well known that PD is largely caused by the gradual degeneration of dopa- minergic neurons within the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc), along with the presence of protein aggregates called Lewy bodies, which consist primarily of ct-synuclein and are found in the cytoplasm of surviving neurons. This ongoing cell loss and Lewy body pathology is not confined to the SNc, but is also seen in other brain regions implicated in PD pathogenesis such as the locus ceruleus. 展开更多

Living a dynamic life physically, intellectually and politically, Jack London had a career that was representative of the vigor of his time with working-class origins, he was, in some of his literary and political writing, one of the most articulate and militant spokesmen of his class. His work is absent from many American authologies, but included in some. "Martin Eden", London’s most autobiographical novel,is considered by many critics to be his most mature work which is read all over the world. 展开更多

Huntington's disease (HD) is the most common dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disorder, mainly characterized by the progressive striatal and cortical neurodegeneration and as- sociated motor, cognitive and behavioural disturbances (Zuccato et al., 2010). The disease-causing mutation is an expansion of a GAG trinucleotide repeat (〉 36 repeats) encoding a polygluta- mine stretch in the N-terminal region ofhuntingtin (Htt) (Zuc- cato et al., 2010), a ubiquitous protein whose function is still unclear (Zuccato et al., 2010). Expansion of the polyQ stretch endows mutant Htt (mHtt) with toxic properties, and results in the development of a broad array of undesirable effects in both neuronal and non-neuronal cells (Zuccato et al., 2010). Among all cellular dysfunctions and biochemical imbalances classically associated with HD, perturbed metabolism of (glyco) sphingolipids appears to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Over the last years, we and other have extensively contributed to these findings (Desplats et al., 2007; 展开更多

Norman Mailer has made a profound analysisof the mad logic of the Vietnam war in his Armiesof the Night, a novel of new journalism whichconcludes the schizophrenic environment of Ameri-can society is at the root of this lunatic war: "He (Norman Mailer) came at last to the saddest conclusion ... that the centre of America might be insane. The country had been living with a controlled, even fiercely controlled, schizophrenia which had been deepening with the years. Perhaps the point had now been passed." (AN. 188)Traditional Christianity as a unifying force inlife has been able for many years to keep somekind of sanity. But it may now be on the decline. 展开更多

Alice Notley’s Culture of On e(2011)is a“poet’s novel”about a woman who lives in the dump of a U.S.Southwest desert town. The female character who“inhabits”the dump-and this poet’s novel-is both metonym for and guide into the lost representation of“the abject,”a concept developed by Julia Kristeva as a psychic state of horror and response to that which lies outside culturally“normalized”subjects and objects, and our“desire for meaning.”Utilizing her dump refuse for its materials, the main character,Marie, creates her own“culture of one,”standing as figure for the artist/writer plunging not“meaning”but meaninglessness and its abject association with death, which is prefigured as the unclean, the improper, rejected body parts,deviant“non-existent”personae-and,ultimately,Marie’s figural status as marginal inhabitant/“culture remaker”/older woman/multi-media“poet”artist.Without traditional conventions of novelistic character development, plot, and visual description,Notley’s“poet’s novel”formally engages in what Viktor Shkolvsky,in his well-known essay“Art as Technique,”terms“defamiliarization”or“strangeness”(“ostranenie,”in Russian),including those principles he cites of“deceleration”and“deviation of the norm.”Notley’s work twists the binary logic implied in Shkolvsky’s“deviation”versus“norm”further by revealing abjection’s“strangeness”in the poet’s novel itself as form,”a text that is always becoming its own site of the linguistic abject, never codifying identity,or the interpreted known. 展开更多

A novel scheme for all-optical inverted wavelength conversion with 40-Gb/s pseudorandom bit sequences (PRBSs) based on a modified terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexer (TOAD) is proposed. The performance of the proposed wavelength converter is analyzed in term of extinction ratio (ER) through numerical simulations. For a typical ER of 10 dB, some key characteristic parameters of the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) are designed. With the properly designed parameters, a high quality eye diagram is achievable, indicating that the amplitude fluctuation of the output signal is effectively reduced. 展开更多
