One hundred and sixty-eight genotypes of cotton from the same growing region were used as a germplasm group to study the validity of different genetic distances in constructing cotton core subset. Mixed linear model approach was employed to unbiasedly predict genotypic values of 20 traits for eliminating the environmental effect. Six commonly used genetic distances(Euclidean, standardized Euclidean,Mahalanobis, city block, cosine and correlation distances) combining four commonly used hierarchical cluster methods(single distance, complete distance, unweighted pair-group average and Ward's methods) were used in the least distance stepwise sampling(LDSS) method for constructing different core subsets. The analyses of variance(ANOVA) of different evaluating parameters showed that the validities of cosine and correlation distances were inferior to those of Euclidean, standardized Euclidean,Mahalanobis and city block distances. Standardized Euclidean distance was slightly more effective than Euclidean,Mahalanobis and city block distances. The principal analysis validated standardized Euclidean distance in the course of constructing practical core subsets. The covariance matrix of accessions might be ill-conditioned when Mahalanobis distance was used to calculate genetic distance at low sampling percentages, which led to bias in small-sized core subset construction. The standardized Euclidean distance is recommended in core subset construction with LDSS method. 展开更多

The scale of fluctuation is one of the vital parameters for the application of random field theory to the reliability analysis of geotechnical engineering. In the present study, the fluctuation function method and weighted curve fitting method were presented to make the calculation more simple and accurate. The vertical scales of fluctuation of typical layers of Tianjin Port were calculated based on a number of engineering geotechnical investigation data, which can be guidance to other projects in this area. Meanwhile, the influences of sample interval and type of soil index on the scale of fluctuation were analyzed, according to which, the principle of determining the scale of fluctuation when the sample interval changes was defined. It can be obtained that the scale of fluctuation is the basic attribute reflecting spatial variability of soil, therefore, the scales of fluctuation calculated according to different soil indexes should be basically the same. The non-correlation distance method was improved, and the principle of determining the variance reduction function was also discussed. 展开更多

In this study, a femtosecond laser was focused to ablate brass target and generate plasma emission in air. The influence of lens to sample distance(LTSD) on spectral emission of brass plasma under linearly and circularly polarized pulses with different pulse energies was investigated. The results indicated that the position with the strongest spectral emission moved toward focusing lens with increasing the energy. At the same laser energy, the line emission under circularly polarized pulse was stronger compared with linearly polarized pulse for different LTSDs. Next, electron temperature and density of the plasma were obtained with Cu(Ⅰ) lines, indicating that the electron temperature and density under circularly polarized pulse were higher compared to that under linearly polarized pulse. Therefore, changing the laser polarization is a simple and effective way to improve the spectral emission intensity of femtosecond laserinduced plasma. 展开更多

Background:Seven out of ten hornbill species in the Philippines are threatened with extinction.Among these is the endangered Visayan Hornbill(Penelopides panini),found on the islands of Panay and Negros.Threatened by habitat loss and hunting, its population size is thought to have declined from 1800 individuals 20 years ago to less than 1000.However,a recent study on Negros estimated 3564 individuals across three core forest blocks. This study aims to quantify the Visayan Hornbill population size in and around the Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park(NWPPNP)on Panay, the largest contiguous low-elevation forest landscape remaining across its range, and its broad habitat associations across a gradient of environmental degradation. Methods:Hornbills were surveyed using 10-min distance sampling point counts(n=367)along transects(average length 1.1 km).Environmental variables were recorded along transects, while habitat was classified into primary forest, secondary forest, plantation,or open habitat.Distance software was used to estimate population densities stratified by habitat, with the overall population estimate taken as a mean of habitat density estimates weighted by habitat area.Using generalized linear mixed models, hornbill occurrence was modelled using combinations of nine environmental variables as main and two-way fixed effects. Results:Surveys covered 204.4 km^(2) of the 374.8 km^(2) Northwest Panay Peninsula.Hornbills were not recorded in plantations or open habitats.Hornbill density was significantly higher in primary forest(17.8 individuals/km~2±26.9%CV)than in secondary forest(3.7 individuals/km^(2)±33.2%CV;z=15.212,P<0.001).The overall population estimate for the NWPPNP and environs is 2109 individuals, and 2673 individuals for the entire Northwest Panay Peninsula.Hornbill presence was best explained by a model including distance from the Park boundary alongside five interaction effects and transect as a random effect.Distance, and the interaction between distance and medium-sized trees were significant predictors of hornbill presence. Conclusions:Our study evidences the habitat preference of the Visayan Hornbill, highlights the importance of the NWPPNP for the species'conservation, and provides strong evidence for re-assessing the global population size. 展开更多

Background: World?wide grassland birds are in decline due to habitat loss and degradation resulting from inten?sive agricultural practices. Understanding how key grassland habitat attributes determine grassland bird densities is required to make appropriate conservation decisions. We examine drivers of bird densities in a South African grass?land area that has been managed for biodiversity conservation with reduced grazing pressure. Methods: We estimated the density of the eight most common grassland bird species encountered in our area to evaluate the effects of recent grassland management changes on the avifauna. We collected data on birds and habitat from the austral summers of 2006/2007, 2007/2008 and 2010/2011. We used hierarchical distance sampling methods to estimate density of birds relative to two main habitat variables, i.e., grass cover and height. In addition, we used regression splines within these distance sampling models as a more flexible description of suitable ranges of grass height and cover for each species. Results: For most species, density is related to grass height and cover as expected. The African Quailfinch(Ortygospiza atricollis) and Common Quail(Coturnix coturnix) preferred relatively short and open grass. The Yellow?breasted Pipit(Anthus chloris), African Pipit(Anthus cinnamomeus) and Red?capped Lark(Calandrella cinerea) preferred short and relatively dense grass, while the Wing?snapping Cisticola(Cisticola ayresii) preferred grass of intermediate height and cover. The Cape Longclaw(Macronyx capensis) and Zitting Cisticola(Cisticola juncidis) preferred tall and dense grass. Our results agree with previous studies that grass height combined with grass cover are the most important habitat features that managers should manipulate in order to increase the density of target species. The regression splines show that the effect of these two habitat variables on density is well described by linear relationships for most species. Conclusions: This study supports previous studies suggesting that grazing and fire are important tools for manage?ment to use in order to create a mosaic of grass height and cover that would support high densities of desired spe?cies. We suggest that conservation managers of these grasslands combine fire and grazing as management tools to create suitable habitats for grassland birds in general. 展开更多

The Gulf of Guinea region enjoined with the unique characteristics of the Guinea surface and underwater currents driving the upwelling season, besets the ecological importance of the area amidst growing offshore development. Though several attempts are being made to identify the various cetacean species inhabiting the area, little to no progress is made to under the animal population, their behaviour and distribution in the face of the growing threat. The study hence attempts to develop cetacean population and distribution estimation within Ghana’s offshore construction sites in the time frame of field development while emphasizing the effects of operations on animal behaviour and habitats, purpose at providing an understanding with the general behaviour of these mammals peculiar to the area and too what level the impact of change is having on distribution trends. The study finds the upwelling tends to suggest, strong animal presence in the area during feeding. Short-fin pilot whales were a dominant cetacean feature within the observed cetacean population estimated to have 160 (<em>CV</em> = <em>0.3728</em>) presence. Findings suggest the strong biological importance, BIA (habitat, feeding and breeding), as well as operations drawing on animal curiosity, heightened animal vulnerability. Further studies are required to understand the temporal and spatial distributions patterns, while efforts are needed to ensure protected areas are established, animal surveillance and conservative attitudes are encouraged. 展开更多

The flow around an axisymmetric body of revolution(DARPA SUBOFF bare model)at Re=1.2×10^(7)is numerically investigated using the wall-modeled large eddy simulation(WMLES).To evaluate the capabilities of WMLES in such wall-bounded turbulent flows, the effects of the wall stress model and sampling distance are systematically studied. The numerical results of the non-equilibrium wall stress model with an appropriate sampling distance are in good agreement with the experiments in terms of pressure coefficient,skin-friction coefficient, and drag coefficient. On this basis, the thickening of the turbulent boundary layer and the expansion of the wake can be clearly observed through flow visualization, especially using the Liutex vortex identification method. 展开更多

In order to evaluate the mineral identification of the hyperspectral data and make a trade-off of the imaging system parameters,a quantitative evaluation approach based on the multi-parameters joint optimization is proposed for the hyperspectral remote sensing. In the proposed approach, the mineral identification is defined as the number of the minerals identified and the key imaging parameters employed include ground sample distance(GSD)and spectral resolution(SR).Certain limitations are found among parameters that are used for analyzing the imaging processes. The constraints include the industrial manufacturing level, application requirements and the quantitative relationship among the GSD,the SR and the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR).Regression analysis is used to investigate the quantitative relationship between the mineral identification and the key imaging system parameters. Then,an optimization model for the trade-off study is established by combining the regression equation with the constraints. The airborne hyperspectral image collected by Hymap is applied to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach. The experimental results reveal that the approach can achieve the evaluation of the mineral identification and the trade-off of key imaging system parameters. The error of the prediction is within one kind of mineral. 展开更多

A cotton germplasm collection with data for 20 quantitative traits was used to investigate the effect of the scale of quantitative trait data on the representativeness of plant sub-core collections. The relationship between the representativeness of a sub-core collection and two influencing factors, the number of traits and the sampling percentage, was studied.A mixed linear model approach was used to eliminate environmental errors and predict genotypic values of accessions.Sub-core collections were constructed using a least distance stepwise sampling(LDSS) method combining standardized Euclidean distance and an unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic means(UPGMA) cluster method. The mean difference percentage(MD),variance difference percentage(VD),coincidence rate of range(CR),and variable rate of coefficient of variation(VR) served as evaluation parameters.Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to study the relationship among the number of traits, the sampling percentage, and the four evaluation parameters. The results showed that the representativeness of a sub-core collection was affected greatly by the number of traits and the sampling percentage, and that these two influencing factors were closely connected.Increasing the number of traits improved the representativeness of a sub-core collection when the data of genotypic values were used. The change in the genetic diversity of sub-core collections with different sampling percentages showed a linear tendency when the number of traits was small, and a logarithmic tendency when the number of traits was large. However, the change in the genetic diversity of sub-core collections with different numbers of traits always showed a strong logarithmic tendency when the sampling percentage was changing.A CR threshold method based on Monte Carlo simulation is proposed to determine the rational number of traits for a relevant sampling percentage of a sub-core collection. 展开更多
