As an independent sand control unit or a common protective shell of a high-quality screen, the punching screen is the outermost sand retaining unit of the sand control pipe which is used in geothermal well or oil and gas well. However, most screens only consider the influence of the internal sand retaining medium parameters in the sand control performance design while ignoring the influence of the plugging of the punching screen on the overall sand retaining performance of the screen. To explore the clogging mechanism of the punching screen, this paper established the clogging mechanism calculation model of a single punching screen sand control unit by using the computational fluid mechanics-discrete element method(CFD-DEM)combined method.According to the combined motion of particles and fluids, the influence of the internal flow state on particle motion and accumulation was analyzed. The results showed that(1)the clogging process of the punching sand control unit is divided into three stages:initial clogging, aggravation of clogging and stability of clogging. In the initial stage of blockage, coarse particles form a loose bridge structure, and blockage often occurs preferentially at the streamline gathering place below chamfering inside the sand control unit.In the stage of blockage intensification, the particle mass develops into a relatively complete sand bridge, which develops from both ends of the opening to the center of the opening. In the stable plugging stage, the sand deposits show a“fan shape”and form a“V-shaped”gully inside the punching slot element.(2)Under a certain reservoir particle-size distribution,The slit length and opening height have a large influence on the permeability and blockage rate, while the slit width size has little influence on the permeability and blockage rate. The microscopic clogging mechanism and its law of the punching screen prevention unit are proposed in this study, which has some field guidance significance for the design of punching screen and sand prevention selection. 展开更多

Based on the data of field outcrops, drilling cores, casting thin sections, well logging interpretation,oil/gas shows during drilling, and oil/gas testing results, and combined with modern salt-lake sediments in the Qinghai Lake, the Neogene saline lake beach-bars in southwestern Qaidam Basin are studied from the perspective of sedimentary characteristics, development patterns, sand control factors, and hydrocarbon accumulation characteristics.Beach-bar sand bodies are widely developed in the Neogene saline lake basin, and they are lithologically fine sandstone and siltstone, with wavy bedding,low-angle cross bedding, and lenticular-vein bedding. In view of spatial-temporal distribution, the beach-bar sand bodies are stacked in multiple stages vertically, migratory laterally, and extensive and continuous in NW-SE trending pattern in the plane. The stacking area of the Neogene beach-bar sandstone is predicted to be 3000 km^(2).The water salinity affects the sedimentation rate and offshore distance of beach-bar sandstone, and the debris input from the source area affects the scale and enrichment of beach-bar sandstone. The ancient landform controls the morphology and stacking style of beach-bar sandstone, and the northwest monsoon driving effect controls the long-axis extension direction of beach-bar sandstone. The beach-bars have a reservoir-forming feature of“one reservoir in one sand body”,with thick beach-bar sand bodies controlling the effective reservoir distribution and oil-source faults controlling the oil/gas migration and accumulation direction.Three favorable exploration target zones in Zhahaquan,Yingdong-eastern Wunan and Huatugou areas are proposed based on the analysis of reservoir-forming elements. 展开更多

To meet the requirements of marine natural gas hydrate exploitation,it is necessary to improve the penetration of completion sand control string in the large curvature borehole. In this study, large curvature test wells were selected to carry out the running test of sand control string with pre-packed screen.Meanwhile, the running simulation was performed by using the Landmark software. The results show that the sand control packer and screen can be run smoothly in the wellbore with a dogleg angle of more than 20°/30 m and keep the structure stable.Additionally, the comprehensive friction coefficient is 0.4,under which and the simulation shows that the sand control string for hydrate exploitation can be run smoothly. These findings have important guiding significance for running the completion sand control string in natural gas hydrate exploitation. 展开更多

Static Poisson’s ratio(vs)is crucial for determining geomechanical properties in petroleum applications, namely sand production. Some models have been used to predict vs;however, the published models were limited to specific data ranges with an average absolute percentage relative error(AAPRE)of more than 10%.The published gated recurrent unit(GRU)models do not consider trend analysis to show physical behaviors. In this study,we aim to develop a GRU model using trend analysis and three inputs for predicting n s based on a broad range of data,n s(value of 0.1627-0.4492),bulk formation density(RHOB)(0.315-2.994 g/mL),compressional time(DTc)(44.43-186.9 μs/ft),and shear time(DTs)(72.9-341.2μ s/ft).The GRU model was evaluated using different approaches, including statistical error an-alyses.The GRU model showed the proper trends, and the model data ranges were wider than previous ones. The GRU model has the largest correlation coefficient(R)of 0.967 and the lowest AAPRE,average percent relative error(APRE),root mean square error(RMSE),and standard deviation(SD)of 3.228%,1.054%,4.389,and 0.013,respectively,compared to other models. The GRU model has a high accuracy for the different datasets:training, validation, testing, and the whole datasets with R and AAPRE values were 0.981 and 2.601%,0.966 and 3.274%,0.967 and 3.228%,and 0.977 and 2.861%,respectively.The group error analyses of all inputs show that the GRU model has less than 5% AAPRE for all input ranges, which is superior to other models that have different AAPRE values of more than 10% at various ranges of inputs. 展开更多

Desertification is one of the most serious environmental problems in the world, especially in the arid desert regions.Combating desertification, therefore,is an urgent task on a regional or even global scale. The Taklimakan Desert in China is the second largest mobile desert in the world and has been called the''Dead Sea''due to few organisms can exist in such a harsh environment. The Taklimakan Desert Highway, the longest desert highway(a total length of 446 km)across the mobile desert in the world, was built in the 1990s within the Taklimakan Desert. It has an important strategic significance regarding oil and gas resources exploration and plays a vital role in the socio-economic development of southern Xinjiang,China.However,wind-blow sand seriously damages the smoothness of the desert highway and,in this case, mechanical sand control system(including sand barrier fences and straw checkerboards)was used early in the life of the desert highway to protect the road.Unfortunately, more than 70%of the sand barrier fences and straw checkerboards have lost their functions, and the desert highway has often been buried and frequently blocked since 1999.To solve this problem,a long artificial shelterbelt with the length of 437 km was built along the desert highway since 2000.However,some potential problems still exist for the sustainable development of the desert highway, such as water shortage, strong sandstorms, extreme environmental characteristics and large maintenance costs. The study aims to provide an overview of the damages caused by wind-blown sand and the effects of sand control measures along the Taklimakan Desert Highway.Ultimately,we provide some suggestions for the biological sand control system to ensure the sustainable development of the Taklimakan Desert Highway, such as screening drought-resistant species to reduce the irrigation requirement and ensure the sound development of groundwater, screening halophytes to restore vegetation in the case of soil salinization, and planting cash crops, such as Cistanche,Wolfberry,Apocynum and other cash crops to decrease the high cost of maintenance on highways and shelterbelts. 展开更多

To visually describe the sanding pattern, this study constructs a new particle-scale microstructure model of weakly consolidated formation, and develop the corresponding methodology to simulate the sanding process and predict sand cavity shape. The microstructure model is a particle-objective model, which focuses on the random sedimentation of every sand grain. In the microstructure, every particle has its own size, sphericity and inclination angle. It is used to simulate the actual structure of cemented granular materials, which considers the heterogeneity and randomness of reservoir properties, provides the initial status for subsequent sanding simulation. With the particle detachment criteria, the microscopic simulation of sanding can be visually implemented to investigate the pattern and cavity shapes caused by sand production. The results indicate that sanding always starts initially from the borehole border, and then extends along the weakly consolidated plane, showing obvious characteristic of randomness.Three typical microscopic sanding patterns, concerning pore liquefaction, pseudo wormhole and continuous collapse, are proposed to illustrate the sanding mechanism in weakly consolidated reservoirs. The nonuniformity of sanding performance depends on the heterogeneous distribution of reservoir properties, such as rock strength and particle size. Finally, the three sanding patterns are verified by visually experimental work. The proposed integrated methodology is capable of predicting and describing the sanding cavity shape of an oil well after long-term sanding production, and providing the focus objective of future sand control measure. 展开更多

Straw checkerboard sand barriers with a porous structure that consists of a pervious upper portion and a dense lower portion are widely used to achieve great sand control effect.Considering this, and resolving the serious earth surface undercutting problem after HDPE sandbreak net checkboard barriers setting, the authors used HDPE(high-density polyethylene)materials to prepare new sandbreak materials with a similar porous structure.Through wind tunnel simulations and field sand control monitoring,we compared the sand control effect of three HDPE sandbreak nets with different porosity structure.Compared to the sandbreak net with uniform porosity structure, the three types of HDPE sandbreak nets with different porosity structure had poorer effect on reducing sand transport rates, but had longer effective protection distance before sandbreak nets at low wind velocity conditions(<12 m/s),longer effective protection distance at high wind velocity(>14 m/s)and longer effective protection distance between sandbreak nets at all experimental wind velocity conditions.Wind and sand control effect characteristics of HDPE sandbreak nets with different porosity structure provide an ideal material on semiburied checkerboard sand barriers for sand stabilization.By contrast,uniform-type sandbreak nets are used as materials on high upright sand fences for sand blocking. These HDPE sandbreak nets can be used to replace traditional sandbreak materials and have a very high potential for widespread and popular application in aeolian sand disaster control. 展开更多

Launched in 2002, the Beiing–Tianjin Sand Source Control Project (BTSSCP) is an ecological restoration project intended to prevent desertification in China. Evidence from multiple sources has confirmed increases in vegetation growth in the BTSSCP region since the initiation of this project. Precipitation and essential climate variable-soil moisture (ECV-SM) conditions are typically considered to be the main drivers of vegetation growth in this region. Although many studies have investigated the inter-annual variations of vegetation growth, few concerns have been focused on the annual and seasonal variations of vegetation growth and their climatic drivers, which are crucial for understanding the relationships among the climate, vegetation, and human activities at the regional scale. Based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from MODIS and the corresponding climatic data, we explored the responses of vegetation growth to climatic factors at annual and seasonal scales in the BTSSCP region during the period 2000–2014. Over the study region as a whole, NDVI generally increased from 2000 to 2014, at a rate of 0.002/a. Vegetation growth is stimulated mainly by the elevated temperature in spring, whereas precipitation is the leading driver of summer greening. In autumn, positive effects of both temperature and precipitation on vegetation growth were observed. The warming in spring promotes vegetation growth but reduces ECV-SM. Summer greening has a strong cooling effect on land surface temperature. These results indicate that the ecological and environmental consequences of ecological restoration projects should be comprehensively evaluated. 展开更多

In oil drilling processes, sand production in the oil layer is a common issue, generally mitigated by means of sand control screens. To prevent or reduce the risk of damage of these screens and to improve the related service life,it is necessary to investigate the related erosion dynamics. In this study,a screen mesh model based on the flow field similarity theory is proposed to overcome the otherwise too complex geometric structure of this type of equipment.Such model is optimized using experimental data. The predicted results are in good agreement with the measured values, and the error is less than 15%.The results also show that the simplified geometric screen model and the optimized Zhang et al.erosion model have high reliability;therefore, they could effective be used to select underground screen meshes and improve the design of production process. 展开更多

Unconsolidated sandstone reservoirs are most susceptible to sand production that leads to a dramatic oil production decline. In this study, the poly(4-vinyl pyridine)(P_(4)VP)incorporated with self-aggregating behavior was proposed for sand migration control. The P_(4)VP could aggregate sand grains spontaneously throughπ-πstacking interactions to withstand the drag forces sufficiently. The influential factors on the self-aggregating behavior of the P_(4)VP were evaluated by adhesion force test. The adsorption as well as desorption behavior of P_(4)VP on sand grains was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and adhesion force test at different pH conditions. The result indicated that the pH altered the forms of surface silanol groups on sand grains, which in turn affected the adsorption process of P_(4)VP.The spontaneous dimerization of P_(4)VP molecules resulting from theπ-πstacking interaction was demonstrated by reduced density gradient analysis, which contributed to the self-aggregating behavior and the thermally reversible characteristic of the P_(4)VP.Dynamic sand stabilization test revealed that the P_(4)VP showed wide pH and temperature ranges of application. The production of sands can be mitigated effectively at 20-130℃ within the pH range of 4-8. 展开更多

Sand production is one of the main obstacles restricting gas extraction efficiency and safety from marine natural gas hydrate(NGH)reservoirs.Particle migration within the NGH reservoir dominates sand production behaviors, while their relationships were rarely reported, severely constrains quantitative evaluation of sand production risks. This paper reports the optical observations of solid particle migration and production from micrometer to mesoscopic scales conditioned to gravel packing during depressurization-induced NGH dissociation for the first time.Theoretical evolutionary modes of sand migration are established based on experimental observations, and its implications on field NGH are comprehensively discussed.Five particle migration regimes of local borehole failure, continuous collapse, wormhole expansion, extensive slow deformation, and pore-wall fluidization are proved to occur during depressurization. The types of particle migration regimes and their transmission modes during depressurization are predominantly determined by initial hydrate saturation. In contrast, the depressurization mainly dominates the transmission rate of the particle migration regimes.Furthermore, both the cumulative mass and the medium grain size of the produced sand decrease linearly with increasing initial methane hydrate(MH)saturation.Discontinuous gas bubble emission, expansion, and explosion during MH dissociation delay sand migration into the wellbore. At the same time, continuous water flow is a requirement for sand production during hydrate dissociation by depressurization. The experiments enlighten us that a constitutive model that can illustrate visible particle migration regimes and their transmission modes is urgently needed to bridge numerical simulation and field applications.Optimizing wellbore layout positions or special reservoir treatment shall be important for mitigating sand production tendency during NGH exploitation. 展开更多

Due to its long lifespan and high sand-removal efficiency, gravel packing is one of the most applied sand control methods during the recovery of reservoirs with sanding problems. The blockage and retention of injected sand in a gravel pack is a complex process affected by multiple mechanisms. The majority of existing studies based on the phenomenological deep bed filtration(DBF)theory focused on the gravel pack’s overall permeability damage and failed to obtain the inner-pore particle distribution pattern. In this work, experiments and simulations were carried out to reveal the particle distribution in a gravel pack during flooding. In particular, through real-time monitoring of particle migration, the penetration depth and distribution pattern of invaded particles with different gravel-sand particle ratios, fluid viscosities and injection rates could be determined.By simplifying each unit bed element(UBE)into a pore-throat structure with four tunnels(two horizontals for discharge and two verticals for sedimentation),a new network simulation method, which combines deep bed filtration with a particle trajectory model, was implemented.Cross comparison of experimental and numerical results demonstrates the validity and accuracy of the model. 展开更多

The rotary water jetting is one of the most important techniques for horizontal well cleanup. The jet flow is used to remove plugging particles from sand control screens to recover their permeability.Currently, the operation optimization of this technique depends mainly on experience due to absence of applicable evaluation and design models for removing plugging materials. This paper presents an experimental setup to simulate the cleanup process of plugged screens by rotary water jetting on the surface and to evaluate the performance of a jetting tool.Using real plugged screens pulled from damaged wells,a series of tests were performed, and the qualitative relationships between the cleanup efficiency and various operational parameters, such as the type of fluids used, flow rate, mode of tool movement, etc.,were obtained. The test results indicated that the cleanup performance was much better when the rotary jetting tool moved and stopped periodically for a certain time than that when it reciprocated at a constant speed. To be exact,it was desirable for the rotary jetting tool to move for 1.5-2 m and stop for 2-4 min, which was called the "move-stop-move" mode.Good cleanup performance could be obtained at high flow rates, and the flow rate was recommended to be no lower than 550-600 L/min.The test results also indicated that complex mud acid was better than clean water in terms of cleanup performance.Good cleanup efficiency and high screen permeability recovery could be achieved for severely plugged screens.Rotary jetting is preferred for the cleanup of horizontal wells with severely plugged screens, and the screen permeability recovery ratio may reach 20% if optimized operation parameters were used. 展开更多

To further understand the characteristics of clay and sand production(hereafter collectively referred to as sand production)and to provide optimization designs of sand control schemes are critical for gas production from clayey silt natural gas hydrate reservoirs in the South China Sea.Thus,gas-water-sand production behavoirs and coupling reservoir subsidence characteristics before, during, and after hydrate dissociation of the clayey silt hydrate reservoirs with different clay contents(5%,10%,15%,20%,25%,and 30%)have been studied through a self-developed experimental system. The results show that with the increase of clay content, the total mass of sand production first increases and then decreases, and it reaches maximum when the clayey content is 20%.The sand production is the lowest before hydrate dissociation and increases significantly during hydrate dissociation, which mainly occurs in the high-speed gas and water production stage at the beginning of hydrate dissociation. After hydrate dissociation, the sand production decreases significantly.During the whole depressurization process, the clay and free sand particles generally move to the sand outlet due to the fluid driving force and overlying stress extrusion. However, for conditions of high clay contents, those particles fail to pass through the sand control screen and gradually accumulate and block the screen by forming a mud cake, which greatly reduce the permeability of the screen and limite sand production as well as gas and water production. Our research lays a foundation for sand production prediction and sand control scheme selection during gas recovery from clayey silty hydrate reservoirs that greatly need to consider a balance between sand control and gas productivity. 展开更多

The Lanzhou-Xinjiang high-speed railway(HSR)traverses areas of the Gobi Desert where extremely strong winds are frequent. These strong winds cause sand/gravel hazards,an unaddressed issue that often seriously compromises the safe operation of the HSR.This paper studies the mechanisms leading to wind-blown sand hazards and the outcomes of sand control projects in these areas. The main findings are as follows:(1)Cold northern airflows over the Tian Shan mountain range are accelerated by the wind tunnels and downslope effect as they pass over complex terrain comprising passes, gullies, and proluvial fans.Consequently, the wind intensity often increases two-to threefold, creating frequent high-speed winds that lead to severe sand damage along the HSR.(2)In the Gobi areas with extremely strong winds, sand grains can be lifted as high as 9 m from the ground into the air,far higher than in other areas of the desert. The sand transport rate decreases exponentially with increasing height. Both wind speed and particle size determine saltation height.Coarser particles and stronger winds provide the particles with a higher kinetic energy as they collide with the ground. In the wind zones of Baili and Yandun, the analysed study areas, the saltation layer height of wind-blown sand/gravel exceeds 3 and 2 m,respectively.(3)Based on the above findings, recently emerging sand control materials, suitable for the areas of interest, were screened and developed.Furthermore, under the proposed principle of‘supplementing blocking with trapping’,a comprehensive sand control measure was established, featuring sandblocking belts comprised of multiple rows, and high, vertical sand-trapping installations with a large grids size. The installed system showed a high efficacy, reducing sand transport rate by 87.87%and significantly decreasing the deposition of sand along a trial section of the HSR. 展开更多

Wind-blown sand over sandy gobi with an abundant sediment supply can cause severe sand hazards. However, compared with the study of aeolian transport over gravel gobi with a limited sediment supply, less attention has been devoted to sandy gobi, and thus, our understanding of wind-blown sand movement on sandy gobi is still poor. Here,we report the results of observations of three transport events on a sandy gobi along the Hami-Lop Nor Railway based on high-frequency saltation particle count and horizontal sediment flux measurements coupled with instantaneous wind velocity measurements. The results reveal that, unlike the notably intermittent aeolian saltation over gravel gobi, continuous transport occurred on the sandy gobi. The mean saltation layer height was 0.23±0.07 m,and it was positively related to both the grain size of surface particles and the wind velocity regardless of the gobi type. The sediment transport rates could be expressed as the power function Q=ap/g[u^(*)(u^(*2)-u^(*)t^(2))]b,and the scaling parameter(b)reached to 2.5,which is much larger than that of other gobi areas(b=1).Our findings suggest that the wind-blown sand over sandy gobi is much more severe than that over gravel gobi, and the Nanhu sandy gobi is the major sand source for sand hazards of the Hami-Lop Nor Railway.Sand-fixation measures such as checkerboard sand barriers with enhanced checkerboard size and barrier height should be the main subject of sand control systems for the Hami-Lop Nor Railway in sandy gobi. 展开更多

Recently, sand fences, made of high density polyethylene(HDPE)board, which is resistant against harsh plateau environmental conditions, could possibly be used to control the wind-blown sand along the Qinghai section of the Golmud-Korla Railway. In this paper, wind tunnel simulation was performed on the protective effect of multiple rows of HDPE board sand fences on wind-blown sand. Two parameters have been used to reflect the protective effect of sand fences, that is,windproof efficiency and sand control efficiency, referring to the reduction rates of wind speed at a height of 0.04 m and sand flux in a run of test with the fence compared those in the control run of test without it,respectively. The test results showed that when the porosity was 30%,the single-row sand fence had the best wind proof and sand control efficiency with respective values of 46%and 65.3%.The windproof efficiencies of double-row and triple-row sand fences at 20H were 59%and 62%,respectively.Compared with the windproof effi-ciency of the single-row sand fence, those of the two-row and three-row fences increased by 13%and 16%,respectively:The maximum sand control efficiency of the double-row and triple-row sand fences were 92.1%and 96.5%,increased by 26.8%and 31.2%,respectively,compared with that of the single-row sand fence. This study indicates that the sand control efficiency after adding one or two rows was not double or triple that of the single-row fence, while the first-row sand fence played a major protective role.Compared with the double-row sand fences, the effect of the third row sand fence in triple-row sand fences is limited, and thus double-row HDPE board sand fences with the porosity of 30%are rec-ommended to control wind-blown sand along the Qinghai section of the Golmud-Korla Railway. 展开更多

Due to the current global oil price, the sand production is considered undesirable product and the control of sand production is considered as one of the main concerns of production engineers. It can damage downhole, subsea equipments and surface production facilities, also increasing the risk of catastrophic failure. As a result of that it costs the producers multiple millions of dollars each year. Therefore, there are many different approaches of sand control designed for different reservoir conditions.Selecting an appropriate technique for preventing formation sand production depends on different reservoir parameters. Therefore, choosing the best sand control method is the result of systematic study. In this paper the sand production factors and their effects are presented where the emphasis is given towards the sand prediction to determine the probability of producing sand from the reservoir, followed by the correct prevention implementation of sand control method. The combination of these two is presented as a smart control framework that can be applied for sand production management. 展开更多

To mitigate impacts of sandstorms on northern China, the Chinese government launched the Beijing- Tianjin Sand Source Control Program (BTSSCP) in 2000. The associated practices (i.e., cultivation, enclosure, and aerial seeding) were expected to greatly enhance grassland carbon sequestration. However, the BTSSCP-induced soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics remain elusive at a regional level. Using the Xilingol League in Inner Mongolia for a case study, we examined the impacts from 2000 to 2006 of the BTSSCP on SOC stocks using the IPCC carbon budget inventory method. Results indicated that over all practices SOC storage increased by 1.7%, but there were large differences between practices. SOC increased most rapidly at the rate of 0.3 Mg C.ha-1 "yr-1 under cultivation, but decreased signifi- cantly under aerial seeding with moderate or heavy grazing (0.3 vs.0.6 Mg C-ha-I .yr-1). SOC increases varied slightly for grassland types, ranging from 0.10 Mg C-ha-1 .yr-a for temperate desert steppe to 0.16 Mg C.ha-l.yr-1 for temperate meadow steppe and lowland meadow. The overall economic benefits of the SOC sink were estimated to be 4.0 million CNY. Aerial seeding with no grazing was found to be the most cost-effective practice. Finally, we indicated that at least 55.5 years (shortest for cultivation) were needed for the grasslands to reach their potential carbon stocks. Our findings highlight the importance and effectiveness of BTSSCP in promoting terrestrial carbon sequestration which may help mitigate climate change, and further stress the need for more attention to the effective- ness of specific practices. 展开更多

The consequences of sandstone reservoir rock failure may lead to sand production. This phenomenon can have negative impact on lifting cost and economic of any field development.Metal erosion due to sanding can lead to loss of integrity and hydrocarbon leakage.Poor decision on the type of completion can risk the viability of the field. To facilitate best sand management over the life of a field and to maintain economical productivity, accurate prediction of sand production volume/rates is needed to increase both productivity and the ultimate recovery of the hydrocarbon while keeping the operating cost low. This paper summarizes the sand production modeling for onset and volume of sand namely technology that required to improve understanding on sand production and mitigation.Three main questions will be answered, why industry needs to worry about sand production, what are the available technologies to predict sanding volume/rates finally, how the current technologies can be improved to estimate sand production volume/rates. 展开更多
