In this model, the loading surface always passes through the current stress state regardless of the type of loading. Destruction of the cementation bonds by plastic deformation in the model is considered as the primary mechanism responsible for the mechanical degradation of loosely cemented sands/weak rock.To model cyclic response, the unloading plastic and elastic moduli are formulated based on the loading/reloading plastic and elastic moduli. The proposed model was implemented in FLAC2D and evaluated against laboratory triaxial tests under monotonic and cyclic loadings, and the model results agreed well with the experimental observations. For cyclic tests, hysteresis loops are captured with reasonable accuracy.展开更多

The tested curves of the excess pore water pressure (EPWP) ratio variation with the ratio of the number of cycles are provided. The concept of the EPWP increment ratio is introduced and two new concepts of the effective dynamic shear stress ratio and the log decrement of effective stress are defined. It is found that the development of the EPWP increment ratio can be divided into three stages: descending, stable and ascending. Furthermore, at the stable and ascending stages, a satisfactory linear relationship is obtained between the accumulative EPWP increment ratio and natural logarithm of the effective dynamic shear stress ratio. Accordingly, the EPWP increment ratio at the number of cycles N has been deduced that is proportional to the log decrement of effective stress at the cycle number N-l, but is independent of the cyclic stress amplitude. Based on the analysis, a new EPWP increment model for saturated Nanjing fine sand is developed from tested data fitting, which provides a better prediction of the curves of EPWP generation, the number of cycles required for initial liquefaction and the liquefaction resistance.展开更多

The system evolves into a critical state after a transient period. A detailed analysis of the probability distribution of the avalanche size and duration is numerically investigated. Interestingly, contrary to the deterministic one-dimensional sand-pile model, where multifractal analysis works well, the analysis based on simple finite-size scaling is suited to fitting the data on the distribution of the avalanche size and duration. The exponents characterizing these probability distributions are measured. Scaling relations of these scaling exponents and their universality class are discussed.展开更多

To further analyze the stability state of sand on a slope under different rainfall conditions, the initiation conditions and flow characteristics of water–sand flows are studied. Based on the theory of equilibrium forces and hydrological dynamics, a 1:100-scale analog model is built and verified with field observation data. The results indicate three dynamic stabilization stages of the sand slope under different weather conditions: dry sand, wet sand, and water–sand flow. Water–sand flows are triggered easilyunder short duration and heavy rainfall conditions. The rainfall threshold required to initiate water–sand flow is 4.14 mm/h. Rainfall amount and duration required to initiate water–sand flow decrease with fine sand content increasing. A sand head that develops at the front of the water–sand flow results in a flow along the edge of the sand debris flow and a ‘‘tree root’’ flow morphology. The deformed mild-slope equation is used to eliminate the restriction of wave length on calculation steps. Using the hard disk to record data during the calculation process, the enhanced numerical method can save computer memory space to a certain extent, so that a large-scale sea area can be calculated with high-resolution grids. This model was applied to wave field integral calculation over a radial sand ridge field in the South Yellow Sea. The results demonstrate some features of the wave field: (1) the wave-height contour lines are arc-shaped near the shore; (2) waves break many times when they propagate toward the shore; (3) wave field characteristics on the northern and southern sides of Huangshayang are different; and (4) the characteristics of wave distribution match the terrain features. The application of this model in the region of the radial sand ridge field suggests that it is a feasible way to analyze wave refraction-diffraction effects under natural sea conditions.展开更多

The real-time data of sand-deposit height and radius were obtained by the self-developed sand-deposit detectors. The test results show that the detecting method is simple and has high precision. In the use of sand-flow method, the sand-carrying capability of fluid is limited, and sand particles are all transported to the sand-deposit periphery through crater, gap and chutes after the sand deposit formed. The diffusion range of the particles outside the sand-deposit does not exceed 2.0 m. Severe sorting of sand particles is not observed because of the unique oblique-layered depositing process. The temporal and spatial distributions of gap and chutes directly affect the sand-deposit expansion, and the expansion trend of the average sand-deposit radius accords with quadratic time-history curve.展开更多

The formation mode and soil-water interaction mechanism of the debris flows were analyzed from both macroscopic and microscopic points of view respectively using high digital imaging equipment and micro-structure analysis software Geodip. The test results indicate that the forming process of debris flow mainly consists of three stages, namely the infiltration and softening stage, the overall slide stage, and debris flow stage. The essence of simulated coarse sand slope forming debris flow is that local fluidization cause slope to wholly slide. The movement of small particles forms a transient stagnant layer with increasing saturation, causing soil shear strength lost and local fluidization. When the driving force of the saturated soil exceeds the resisting force, debris flow happens on the coarse sand slope immediately.展开更多

In the centrifuge test, a high-speed microscopic camera was installed in the structure model, by which the movements of particles around the structure were monitored. Then, a two-dimensional digital image processing technology was used to analyze the microstructure of saturated sand during the shaking event. Herein, a numerical simulation of the centrifuge experiment was conducted using a two-phase(solid and fl uid) fully coupled distinct element code. This code incorporates a particle-fl uid coupling model by means of a "fi xed coarse-grid" fl uid scheme in PFC3D(Particle Flow Code in Three Dimensions), with the modeling parameters partially calibrated based on earlier studies. The physical and numerical models both indicate the uplifts of the shallow-buried structure and the sharp rise in excess pore pressure. The corresponding micro-scale responses and explanations are provided. Overall, the uplift response of an underground structure and the occurrence of liquefaction in saturated sand are predicted successfully by DEM modeling. However, the dynamic responses during the shaking cannot be modeled accurately due to the restricted computer power.展开更多

But because of the heterogeneity of the mortar, its mechanism of behaviour under different load effects is dependent on the properties of the constituents of the mortar. The aim of paper is to determine the effect sand grading for various cement-sand-lime mortar designations (BS) and strength classes (EC) on the compressive strength and stiffness of mortar. Two silica sands;HST 95 and HST60 were used to make mortars in three strength classes: M2, M4 and M6, corresponding to mortar designations iv, iii and ii respectively. The results show that mortar made with the HST60 sand (coarser grading) usually resulted in mortar with a higher compressive strength and stiffness. The One Way ANOVA analysis of both compressive strength and stiffness at a significance level of 5% on the effect of sand grading on the two parameters also shows that they are both significant. There is also strong evidence of a linear correlation between the stiffness and compressive strength. The results indicate that in order to replicate full scale behaviour of masonry at model scales, the grading of fine aggregate in the models should be similar so as to properly model full scale behavior.展开更多

文摘In contrast to the traditional interpretation of shear bands in sand as a bifurcation problem in continuum mechanics, shear bands in sand are considered as high-strain phase(plastic phase) of sand and the materials outside the bands are still in low-strain phase(elastic phase),namely, the two phases of sand can coexist under certain condition. As a one-dimensional example, the results show that, for materials with strain-softening behavior, the two-phase solution is a stable branch of solutions, but the method to find two-phase solutions is very different from the one for bifurcation analysis. The theory of multi-phase equilibrium and the slow plastic flow model are applied to predict the formation and patterns of shear bands in sand specimens, discontinuity of deformation gradient and stress across interfaces between shear bands and other regions is considered, the continuity of displacements and traction across interfaces is imposed, and the Maxwell relation is satisfied. The governing equations are deduced. The critical stress for the formation of a shear band, both the stresses and strains inside the band and outside the band, and the inclination angle of the band can all be predicted. The predicted results are consistent with experimental measurements.

文摘Using the self-developed visualization test apparatus, centrifuge model tests at 20 g were carried out to research the macro and microscopic formation mechanism of coarse sand debris flows. When the driving force of the saturated soil exceeds the resisting force, debris flow happens on the coarse sand slope immediately.

文摘Based on a centrifuge model test and distinct element method(DEM), this study provides new insights into the uplift response of a shallow-buried structure and the liquefaction mechanism for saturated sand around the structure under seismic action. However, the dynamic responses during the shaking cannot be modeled accurately due to the restricted computer power.
文摘Mortars provide the continuity required for the stability and exclusion of weather elements in masonry assemblies. The results indicate that in order to replicate full scale behaviour of masonry at model scales, the grading of fine aggregate in the models should be similar so as to properly model full scale behavior.
