Assessment of Groundwater Stability Using Corrosion and Scaling Tendency Indices on Selected Springs in the Manga Region in Nyamira County, Kenya

We present the result of groundwater stability assessment on three major springs in the Manga region in Nyamira County found in Kenya in 2018. These springs are Kiangoso (SP1), Kerongo (SP2) and Tetema (SP3). The corrosion and scaling tendency indices were obtained using the Langelier saturation index (LSI), Ryznar stability index (RSI), and Puckorius scaling index (PSI). The LSI values obtained for SP1, SP2, and SP3 are −3.93, −4.71, and −4.17, respectively, while using RSI, the values obtained for SP1, SP2, and SP3 are 14.15, 14.53, and 13.74, respectively. Using PSI, the values of SP1, SP2, and SP3 are 5.58, 5.45, and 5.58, respectively. From the interpretation of the indices, the groundwater from the three springs in the Manga region using LSI and RSI showed intolerable corrosion;hence, it is unlikely to scale as obtained from PSI. 展开更多

Subjective scales have different kinds of applicability in diverse fields.This study intends to implement a quantitative approach to determine the applicability of subjective scales in manual as-sembly work and evaluate the cognitive load of assembly workers.A multi-scale research paradigm based on subjective evaluation method is proposed.Three typical task stages are extracted from the process of assembly work.The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index(NASA-TLX)scale,PAAS scale and Workload Profile Index Ratings(WP)scale are selected for the design of 3×3 multi-factor mixed experiment.The power spectrum density(PSD)characteris-tics of electroencephalogram(EEG)are utilized to identify the difficulty levels of the three task sta-ges.The relevant indicators of scale applicability are assessed.The results show that in terms of sensitivity,NASA-TLX scale reaches the highest sensitivity(F=999.137,P=0<0.05).In terms of validity,NASA-TLX scale possesses the best concurrent validity(P=0.0255<0.05).In terms of diagnosticity,NASA-TLX scale based on 6 dimensions takes on the best diagnostic performance.In terms of subject acceptability,WP scale performs the worst.According to the analytic hierarchy process(AHP)model,the applicability scores of NASA-TLX scale,PAAS scale and WP scale are determined as 3,2.55 and 1.6714,respectively.Therefore,NASA-TLX scale is regarded as the most suitable subjective evaluation questionnaire for assembly workers,which is also an effective quantitative evaluation method for the cognitive load of assembly workers. 展开更多

The leaf area index(LAI) is a critical biophysical variable that describes canopy geometric structures and growth conditions.It is also an important input parameter for climate,energy and carbon cycle models.The scaling effect of the LAI has always been of concern.Considering the effects of the clumping indices on the BRDF models of discrete canopies,an effective LAI is defined.The effective LAI has the same function of describing the leaf density as does the traditional LAI.Therefore,our study was based on the effective LAI.The spatial scaling effect of discrete canopies significantly differed from that of continuous canopies.Based on the directional second-derivative method of effective LAI retrieval,the mechanism responsible for the spatial scaling effect of the discrete-canopy LAI is discussed and a scaling transformation formula for the effective LAI is suggested in this paper.Theoretical analysis shows that the mean values of effective LAIs retrieved from high-resolution pixels were always equal to or larger than the effective LAIs retrieved from corresponding coarse-resolution pixels.Both the conclusions and the scaling transformation formula were validated with airborne hyperspectral remote sensing imagery obtained in Huailai County,Zhangjiakou,Hebei Province,China.The scaling transformation formula agreed well with the effective LAI retrieved from hyperspectral remote sensing imagery. 展开更多

Granite deformation and behavior of acoustic emission sequence under the temperature and pressure condition at different crust depths

Results of triaxial compression experiment results show that granite rock strength increases with the depth until 30 km. In shallow crust, rock failure exhibits abrupt or quasi-abrupt instability under lower pressure. Acoustic Emission (AE for short) distributed almost uniformly before and after failure. Go through downwards into the depth range with progressive failure feature, there are no or only a few number of AE before and after failure. In deeper range, rock failure shows some feature of quasi-abrupt instability under high pressure. There are still few AE before failure, but with the stick-slip, much more An events were detected after failure. Under the temperature and pressure condition of more deep crust (about 26 km), rock failure takes abrupt instability under high pressure as main feature, there are dense AE activities before failure and cumulated frequency of AE increases exponentially before the failure. In about 35 km depth range, rock strength decreases quickly with the depth and sample exhibits semi-ductile or ductile progressive fails, there are no AE being detected before and after failure. The b value of AE sequence before failure seems a little smaller than that after failure, and b value roughly decreased with depth. The numerical range of index α is the widest in about 18 km depth and becomes narrow in the condition of more shallow or more deep crust. So, when the temperature and pressure condition simulating the real environment of focal depth changes from shallow to deep in the crust, the range of a of microfracture sequence would undergo such an evolvement process that a changes from narrow to wide and then to narrow again. 展开更多

In this paper, IT Industry's innovation capability is considered to be the innovation output capability after complex operation of industry input in industry system. In this complex process, R&D personnel input and R&D expense input are un-substitutable, and for evaluation of innovation capability, innovation input and innovation output also are un-substitutable. Based on this theory, an evaluation model of sustaining strength index is put forward. Considering both input scale and output contribution of IT industry's innovation system, this model reflects the un-substitutability of every evaluation aspects. The measurement result not only shows the industry innovation capability, but also reflects the support degree to economy. At last the data of IT industry in China are provided between 1994 and 2004 for empirical study. 展开更多

Aiming at scheduling problems of networked control system (NCS) used to fulfill motion synthesis and cooperation control of the distributed multi-mechatronic systems, the differences of network scheduling and task scheduling are compared, and the mathematic description of task scheduling is presented. A performance index function of task scheduling of NCS according to task balance and traffic load matching principles is defined. According to this index, a static scheduling method is designed and implemented to controlling task set simulation of the DCY100 transportation vehicle. The simulation results are applied successfully to practical engineering in this case so as to validate the effectiveness of the proposed performance index and scheduling algorithm. 展开更多

Scale formation due to the mixing of injection water with formation water causes formation damage and reduction in petroleum production.By using scale inhibitors,scale formation/scaling could be prevented.In this work,static experiments were performed with rapid controlled precipitation tests,which were undertaken using three different scale inhibitors namely Falat scale inhibitor,Scahib 760 scale inhibitor and Scahib 780 scale inhibitor.Results show that parameters such as temperature and pH have significant effects on scale inhibitor efficiency.In this study,at pH of 7.8e9 it was found that an increase in pH can lead to a decrease in SI efficiency.In addition,acquired data shows that Falat scale inhibitor is more efficient at 45C but scale inhibitors(Scahib 760,780)have better efficiencies at 25C.SEM tests were performed to find structure deformation and morphology of precipitation crystals,which indicated that scale inhibitor can have various effects on crystal's shapes.Finally,dynamic tests were performed with coreflood equipment that indicated higher recovery by using the scale inhibitors.The dynamic tests results show that the recovery factor in the presence of Scahib 760 scale inhibitor is about 58%and breakthrough time is 2099(sec).In the absence of scale inhibitor,the recovery factor is about 52%and breakthrough time is 2720(sec). 展开更多

Quantization Based Watermarking Methods Against Valumetric Distortions

Most of the quantization based watermarking algorithms are very sensitive to valumetric distortions, while these distortions are regarded as common processing in audio/video analysis. In recent years, watermarking methods which can resist this kind of distortions have attracted a lot of interests. But still many proposed methods can only deal with one certain kind of valumetric distortion such as amplitude scaling attack, and fail in other kinds of valumetric distortions like constant change attack, gamma correction or contrast stretching. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective method to tackle all the three kinds of valumetric distortions. This algorithm constructs an invariant domain first by spread transform which satisfies certain constraints. Then an amplitude scale invariant watermarking scheme is applied on the constructed domain. The validity of the approach has been confirmed by applying the watermarking scheme to Gaussian host data and real images. Experimental results confirm its intrinsic invariance against amplitude scaling, constant change attack and robustness improvement against nonlinear valumetric distortions. 展开更多
