Ranking academic institutions based on the productivity,impact,and quality of institutional scholars

Purpose:The quantitative rankings of over 55,000 institutions and their institutional programs are based on the individual rankings of approximately 30 million scholars determined by their productivity,impact,and quality.Design/methodology/approach:The institutional ranking process developed here considers all institutions in all countries and regions,thereby including those that are established,as well as those that are emerging in scholarly prowess.Rankings of individual scholars worldwide are first generated using the recently introduced,fully indexed ScholarGPS database.The rankings of individual scholars are extended here to determine the lifetime and last-five-year Top 20 rankings of academic institutions over all Fields of scholarly endeavor,in 14 individual Fields,in 177 Disciplines,and in approximately 350,000 unique Specialties.Rankings associated with five specific Fields(Medicine,Engineering&Computer Science,Life Sciences,Physical Sciences&Mathematics,and Social Sciences),and in two Disciplines(Chemistry,and Electrical&Computer Engineering)are presented as examples,and changes in the rankings over time are discussed.Findings:For the Fields considered here,the Top 20 institutional rankings in Medicine have undergone the least change(lifetime versus last five years),while the rankings in Engineering&Computer Science have exhibited significant change.The evolution of institutional rankings over time is largely attributed to the recent emergence of Chinese academic institutions,although this emergence is shown to be highly Field-and Discipline-dependent.Practical implementations:Existing rankings of academic institutions have:(i)often been restricted to pre-selected institutions,clouding the potential discovery of scholarly activity in emerging institutions and countries;(ii)considered only broad areas of research,limiting the ability of university leadership to act on the assessments in a concrete manner,or in contrast;(iii)have considered only a narrow area of research for comparison,diminishing the broader applicability and impact of the assessment.In general,existing institutional rankings depend on which institutions are included in the ranking process,which areas of research are considered,the breadth(or granularity)of the research areas of interest,and the methodologies used to define and quantify research performance.In contrast,the methods presented here can provide important data over a broad range of granularity to allow responsible individuals to gauge the performance of any institution from the Overall(all Fields)level,to the level of the Specialty.The methods may also assist identification of the root causes of shifts in institution rankings,and how these shifts vary across hundreds of thousands of Fields,Disciplines,and Specialties of scholarly endeavor.Originality/value:This study provides the first ranking of all academic institutions worldwide over Fields,Disciplines,and Specialties based on a unique methodology that quantifies the productivity,impact,and quality of individual scholars.

Relevant theoretic account of humor in sketches

Based on the relevant theory, this paper makes an analysis of humor in Chinese popular art form --sketch. It is believed that the maximal relevance and the optimal relevance of utterances, explicature and implicature of utterances, and the efforts made by hearers in dealing with utterances are three important aspects in showing humorous effects in sketches, among which sketch actors＇ violating the mutual cognitive environment so as to create an unexpected effect on hearers is the core in creating humor in sketches. Through analyzing some excerpts from the sketch Yesterday.Today.Tomorrow, the author tries to explore the relevance nature of language in sketch and creation of humor in it.

A Warm Reading of Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town

Stephen Leacock(1869-1944) is one of the founding parents of Canadian letters and literature. In the early 20thcentury, his reputation as a humorist and a political economist was not limited by the boundaries of Canada but spread around the world. As one of his works, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town has attracted world-wide admiration. It is a series of vignettes dramatizing the comedy of day-to-day life in Mariposa. It is bathed in the warm sunshine for all of us to laugh at as one of us remembers the little towns we might have known or come from. As a matter of fact, Leacock employs several techniques in his writing for humorous effect. This paper elaborates on the auther and the work, and makes an analysis on the character—Smith.

Similarities in Terms of Humor in Characterization as Seen in Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town andThe Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

This thesis attempts to investigate the humor in characterization in two novels,Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town by a Canadian writer Stephen Leacock and The Adventures ofHuckleberry Finn by an American writer Mark Twain.Through comparison of characterization inthese two great works,the lively and funny appearances,psychological development and humorousconducts of the characters come to life.It does help readers have a thorough understanding of thehumor created by these two masters of realism in the worldwide literature.

Lapel Pattern Recognition in Flat Sketches Based on Lapel Model

Taking lapels as examples,the purpose of this paper is to study the problem of recognizing the same clothing component in the flat sketches. Supposing that the four lines in a lapel are concurrent and symmetrical,a mathematical lapel model is built. Then,a novel method for lapel recognition in fashion flat sketches based on the lapel model is proposed. In the image preprocessing stage, the images need to be cropped for two times in order to remove the blank background and extract the region of interest,respectively. In the concurrent recognition stage,line detection,θ selection,and curve fitting are applied to limiting candidate lines. In the symmetrical recognition stage, k-means clustering algorithm is employed to divide the selected lines into four clusters. The threshold values of the difference of corresponding weighted θ are set as lapel recognition criteria. Experiments demonstrate that the recognition accuracy of the proposed method is obtained at about 91. 7%.

Baishideng’s Reference Citation Analysis database announces the first Article Influence Index of multidisciplinary scholars

After three rounds of rigorous evaluation of registered scholars conducted by the Reference Citation Analysis(RCA)editorial team of Baishideng Publishing Group(Baishideng),the RCA database of Baishideng officially released the 2022 Article Influence Index(2022 AII)of 632 scholars from 74 countries/territories in 98 research categories,for the first time.The list of 632 scholars can be found at:https://www.referencecitationanalysis.com/searchscholar.Among them,the highest 2022 AII is 348.211,the highest number of total citations is 42830,and the highest number of total articles is 901.The category with the largest number of RCA scholars is Gastroenterology&Hepatology,with a total of 100(15.8%),and the second is Surgery,with a total of 46(7.3%).This article summarizes the RCA scholars and describes the mission of RCA,the openness and transparency of RCA evaluation,the calculation method for the 2022 AII,and the evaluation process of RCA scholars.The RCA scholar list will effectively serve as a useful Find-a-Scholar tool.Any interested scholar is welcome to register and join this RCA scholar list.

Flower solid modeling based on sketches

In this paper we propose a method to model flowers of solid shape. Based on (Ijiri et al., 2005)’s method, we separate individual flower modeling and inflorescence modeling procedures into structure and geometry modeling. We incorporate interactive editing gestures to allow the user to edit structure parameters freely onto structure diagram. Furthermore, we use free-hand sketching techniques to allow users to create and edit 3D geometrical elements freely and easily. The final step is to automatically merge all independent 3D geometrical elements into a single waterproof mesh. Our experiments show that this solid modeling approach is promising. Using our approach, novice users can create vivid flower models easily and freely. The generated flower model is waterproof. It can have applications in visualization, animation, gaming, and toys and decorations if printed out on 3D rapid prototyping devices.

基于近似测量算法Sketch的高精度区块链异常检测机制

区块链存在网络动态性强和其管理困难等问题,使得区块链普遍存在DDoS攻击和账户接管等异常现象.现有区块链异常检测方法多从所有区块链账户中提取历史交易信息和交易频率等特征加以分析以甄别异常.然而,随着区块链数据规模的不断扩大,现有方法在提取特征时面临内存消耗高、检测精度低的挑战.为此,提出了一种高检测精度、低内存开销的区块链异常检测机制,该机制采用近似测量算法将区块链异常检测转化为异常交易账户检测,包括区块内异常账户和跨区块异常账户.对于区块内异常账户,即仅存在于单个区块内的异常账户,使用Sketch算法进行账户识别,精度高.而对于存在于多个区块且难以通过单个区块信息检测到的跨区块异常账户,则通过聚合和分析多区块信息进行账户的准确检测.使用包含88847个区块的真实区块链数据评估上述机制.实验结果表明,与现有代表性方法对比,所提出的机制将区块链异常检测的召回率最高提升了6.3倍,F1分数最高提升了4.4倍.因此,提出的高精度区块链异常检测机制对于规范区块链交易行为、维护系统安全性具有意义.

基于Sketch的重要DNS查询缓存方法

在网络信息技术快速发展背景下,域名系统作为互联网应用的入口,其性能和安全对网络服务的质量尤为关键。然而,从缓存的角度来看,当前域名解析器的域名缓存项管理机制尚不完善。为此,提出了一种基于Sketch技术的域名缓存管理方法,创新地引入了“重要度”评估指标,将网络测量方法应用于缓存管理,实现对缓存项的时间和频率两方面特征的综合度量,满足动态划定重要域名需求。实验结果表明,该缓存方法能够从真实网络环境产生的海量域名查询请求中,针对性地将重要域名添加到缓存予以保护,平均解析时间相比现有域名缓存解决方案减少超过18%。所提方法不仅能够对域名缓存实施更灵活的操作,提高域名系统的用户侧可用性和管理侧可维护性,更为域名缓存管理的研究提供了新的视角和解决方案。

On the Studies of Saussure and his Theories by Chinese Scholars

Saussure and his linguistic theories have great influences for the study of linguistics and second language acquisition of the world over.Chinese linguistics more or less is influenced by Saussure's theories.This paper is aiming to review all papers written by Chinese scholars on the records by CNKI(Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure) from 1979 to September 28(2012),meanwhile,and trying to analysis on studies of topics and contents in different periods about Saussure and his theories in China.

基于Count Sketch的预处理贪婪Kaczmarz方法

在贪婪Kaczmarz方法中,通过对系数矩阵进行正交三角分解引入右预处理子能够提高贪婪Kaczmarz方法的收敛速率。但在系数矩阵的行数远大于列数的情况下,正交三角分解的成本过高。为降低预处理的成本,通过引入Count Sketch变换,提出了基于Count Sketch的预处理贪婪Kaczmarz方法,并对新方法进行了收敛性分析。理论分析说明了新方法在系数矩阵条件数较大时比已有方法具有更好的收敛速率。数值实验验证了新方法的有效性。

A digital assistant for shading paper sketches

We present a mixed reality-based assistive system for shading paper sketches.Given a paper sketch made by an artist,our interface helps inexperienced users to shade it appropriately.Initially,using a simple Delaunaytriangulation based inflation algorithm,an approximate depth map is computed.The system then highlights areas(to assist shading)based on a rendering of the 2.5-dimensional inflated model of the input contour.With the help of a mixed reality system,we project the highlighted areas back to aid users.The hints given by the system are used for shading and are smudged appropriately to apply an artistic shading to the sketch.The user is given flexibility at various levels to simulate conditions such as height and light position.Experiments show that the proposed system aids novice users in creating sketches with impressive shading.

Contributions of Chinese scholars to body donation research in international journals

Anatomical dissectionis an important part of human anatomy course and relies much on cadavers.Body donation is the primary source of cadavers used in ana tomical dissection course in China.This study aimed to systematically review the contributions of Chinese scholars to body donation research in international journals,in the 100^(th) anniversary of the foundation of Chinese Society for Anatomical Sciences.The search was conducted on May 12,2020.The searching strategy was(body or anatomy or anatomical or cadaver or cadaveric)and(donate or donation or bequest or gift or gifting)and(China or Hong Kong or Macao or Taiwan).Only English articles focusing on body donation research were included.A total of 578 articles were retrieved.

A Case Study on Anxiety of University English Teachers as Visiting Scholars in Their Collaborative Learning

The study is to explore the test anxiety of three university English teachers in their collaborative learning community when they do their visiting scholar program.The research questions are about the representations of test anxiety of the college English teacher collaborative learning community as visiting scholars,and the interaction between anxiety and their collaborative learning.The main data collection includes deep interview,field observation,online chatting,etc.The research finds that at the three stages of their learning,the participant shows various representations of test anxiety from cognitive,affective and behavioral perspectives,and collaborative learning community facilitates the participant have better execution in learning,more pressure released and much cognitive enhancement achieved.In contrast,lack of collaborative learning environment in her working university and the specific anxiety for marriage in female participant are two additional findings in the study,which may prove the positive effect of collaborative learning on anxiety from another point of view.
