The recent years have seen Chinese universities, including prestigious ones, using various questionable tactics to attract top students after the college entrance examination. Large scholarships are one of them.

While any organization has a fair share of problems to address, such an overarching focus on everything that is wrong with an organization can create a harmful cycle of pessimism, depression, and low energy that can be difficult to overcome. Positive Organization Scholarship (POS) practitioners, much like the skilled therapist, help organizations shift from a negative, limiting mindset into a positive, open mindset in order to facilitate positive change. This paper explores how cognitive reappraisal strategies common in psychotherapy could be used by POS practitioners to facilitate change and growth in the organizations they serve.展开更多

Formally established one year after his passing, the grant quickly became the most famous educational award in the English-speaking world. Every year, 32 American college seniors are selected to study at Oxford University.1 Many of these elite men have returned from England to distinguish themselves in their chosen fields. Indeed the list of recipients reads like a Who's Who of American Leadership. Politicians such as senators J. William Fulbright and Bill Bradley, former President Bill Clinton, public policy analysts Robert Reich and George Stephanopoulos, writer Robert Penn Warren, as well as Supreme Court Justices Bryon White and David Souter, to name but a few, all achieved the status of Rhodes Scholars, a designation that has followed them thorough their respective and impressive careers (Schaeper & Schaeper, 1998). Undoubtedly, this scholarship has had an enormous impact on the individuals who have been deemed worthy of its selection. Today, selection as a Rhodes Scholar is widely considered a golden ticket to future success for its recipients.展开更多

Research shows: the curriculum provision should consider not only the national culture but also the interest or need of students; the new electrical devices can be positive tools for studying if making good use of them; the requirements of graduation should cover all the fields of a student in campuses; society and enterprise should focus more on student's ability; the college should offer more scholarships for poor students.展开更多

However, the mechanism underlying altered autophagy associated with the beclin 1 complex remains un- clear. In this study, we transfected the Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1 G93A mutant protein into the motor neuron-like cell line NSC34 cultured in vitro. Western blotting and co-immunopre- cipitation showed that the Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1 G93A mutant enhanced the turnover of autophagic marker microtubule-associated protein light chain 3II (LC3Ⅱ) and stimulated the conversion of EGFP-LC3Ⅰ to EGFP-LC3Ⅱ, but had little influence on the binding capacity of the autophagy modulators ATG14L, rubicon, UVRAG, and hVps34 to beclin 1 during auto- phagosome formation. These results suggest that the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis-linked Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase I G93A mutant can upregulate autophagic activity in NSC34 cells, but that this does not markedly affect beclin 1 complex components.展开更多

Digital media can facilitate individualized and cooperative learning. Additionally, digital media can be used to promote inclusion. However, which factors influence the acquisition of media and information literacy in inclusive education? Comparative international studies, e.g., the International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS), show how social challenges, such as participation and handling heterogeneity at school, can be addressed through media. In numerous studies, it becomes apparent that German teachers do not sufficiently see the potential of digital media, especially for the improvement of learning opportunities for individuals with diverse learning requirements. German teachers are not well able to apply digital media appropriately in their lessons. Teachers need to be qualified and to design modern education with accessible media. In Germany, the ratio between available computers and pupils (1:4) is far better than the rate between teaching with and without computers. According to the teacher’s reports, only 9% of teachers are using digital media daily. Approximately 40% use digital media seldom or never. It seems that the cause is a skeptical attitude towards media among teachers, especially in humanities. That may result from missing didactical competences regarding digital media. The idea of Technical Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and extending that explanatory model for teachers’ competencies on the inclusive practices builds the theoretical background for the design of joint seminars by the Research Center Youth-Media-Education as part of the Faculty for Cultural Studies and the Research Cluster Technology for Inclusion and Participation at the University of Dortmund. Prospective teachers should become familiar with this way of collaboration. Already for four years now, a teaching team from these two departments designs collaborative lectures. Inclusive teaching and learning in different contexts are practiced in tutorials with practical approaches as well. In tandems, the students develop a learning situation at school or extracurricular institutions. Afterward, they present it. The presentation focuses on the concept, its teaching and learning conditions, and competence orientation as well as opportunities and limitations.展开更多

Yet, the methodological constraints required by the two main branches of research into Chinese medicine--bio-scientific and socio-historical--rarely assist Chinese medicine students, practitioners, or clinical researchers with treatment and practice issues. A great deal of bio-scientific research assumes that it must be possible to utilise and test Chinese medicine from within a biomedical framework. However, by isolating therapeutic techniques and substances and standardising treatment protocols, bio-scientific research removes Chinese medicine's inbuilt flexibility and responsiveness to clinical instances and changes. While researchers in the historical and social sciences can reveal the sophisticated discourses built around Chinese medicine's distinctive approach to knowing the world and the body-person, they normally do not discuss the implications of their work for contemporary clinical practice. The paper advocates a synthetic approach using multidisciplinary sources within and adjacent to the field of Chinese medicine. Multidisciplinary researchers contest the simplified and biomedicalised version of Chinese medicine generally available in English speaking countries today. They can assist English speakers to approach Chinese medicine's traditional perspectives, demonstrate their relevance for contemporary clinical practice and help restore the traditional connectedness between Chinese medicine's theoretical concepts and its treatment methods.展开更多

As a result of the aged long commercial, cultural, and religious linkages between North Africa and the Central Sudan, one finds so many things in common among the two regions in dress, diets, cultural traits, as well as educational and religious practices. The extent of influence of the North African region on the individual and communal lives of the central Sudan has been extraordinarily great. The central Sudan is one of the most Islamized areas of West Africa, and Arabic language is second language to the Muslim communities in domestic and public spheres. And as a result of the entrenchment of Islam among the people due to the activities of North African scholars and traders the area became the hub of Islamic scholarship. The intellectual history of the Central Bilad al-Sudan cannot be complete without the mention of an Algerian scholar, Muhammad ibn Abd-A1-Kareem al-Maghili who in addition to his scholarly influence took appointment as Special Adviser in Kano in the 1460s. The same could be said of an Egyptian prolific writer, Jalal al-Deen al-Suyuti, who settled in Katsina and Gobir and also took the appointment of Grand Qadi in Katsina in the 15th century. Similarly, books of Sanhaja scholars, Shinqit Ulama'a, as well as Spanish-Andalusian scholars via Morocco were made available and widely studied in this part of Muslim world. The combination of the activities of such scholars, literature, and learning tradition were responsible lbr the growth and development of Muslim intelligentsia in the central Bilad al-Sudan since the earliest time, and the influence continues to date. Thus this paper aims at examining the phenomenon, primarily by assessing the influence of scholars, literature, and educational institutions from the Maghreb on the intellectual development and the emergence of native scholars and intelligentsia and on the general scholarly trend in the central Bilad al-Sudan.展开更多

However, it is believed that undergraduate accounting students with majors in mathematics from pre-university institutes perform much better than those with arts or social sciences backgrounds. Therefore, this paper~ takes the mathematics perception level as well as pre-university's cumulative grade point averages (CGPAs) as the main indicators of efficiency and better performance of undergraduate accounting students. In order to test the hypotheses, a multiple regression analysis has been used. By choosing all undergraduate accounting candidates, who had been admitted for academic calendars of 2009-2010 in four different universities (one public, two semi-publics, and one private university) and testing their mathematics excellency, as well as extracting their CGPAs, the authors find that students' mathematical talents are high, and to a lower extent, the CGPAs will positively influence the performance in accounting courses.展开更多

文摘Education is the base of the survival and growth of any state, but due to resource scarcity, students, particularly at the university level, are forced into a difficult situation.Scholarships are the most significant financial aid mechanisms developed to overcome such obstacles and assist the students in continuing with their higher studies. In this study, the convoluted situation of scholarship eligibility criteria, including parental income, responsibilities, and academic achievements,is addressed. In an attempt to maximize the scholarship selection process, numerous machine learning algorithms, including Support Vector Machines,Neural Networks,K-Nearest Neighbors, and the C4.5 algorithm, were applied. The C4.5 algorithm, owing to its efficiency in the prediction of scholarship beneficiaries based on extraneous factors, was capable of predicting a phenomenal 95.62%of predictions using extensive data of a well-esteemed government sector university from Pakistan. This percentage is 4%and 15%better than the remainder of the methods tested, and it depicts the extent of the potential for the technique to enhance the scholarship selection process. The Decision Support Systems(DSS)would not only save the administrative cost but would also create a fair and transparent process in place. In a world where accessibility to education is the key, this research provides data-oriented consolidation to ensure that deserving students are helped and allowed to get the financial assistance that they need to reach higher studies and bridge the gap between the demands of the day and the institutions of intellect.

文摘While socialization has become a major lens of research in doctoral education, this paper advances the theoretical foundation of the socialization process in doctoral education by using the institutional logics theory.Specifically,it proposes an analytical framework for understanding the socialization of doctoral students, where it is seen as a process of reconciling different or even competing institutional logics that drive students’development in doctoral education. The framework has been applied in an empirical study of ten doctoral students in Finland who were funded by the China Scholarship Council(CSC).While proving the usefulness of the analytical framework, the study shows that CSC doctoral students mainly face the competing logics of profession and corporation during socialization.Influenced by a strong profession logic, the Chinese students have transformed themselves into novice professionals and knowledge producers.Corporation logic competed with profession logic in the management of doctoral students and has resulted in a lack of teaching experiences in doctoral training and a weak recognition of professional identity in the students’host universities. The influence of family logic, inherited from CSC doctoral students’cultural backgrounds, has been decoupled in the socialization process and has led to a strong sense of loss in handling the supervisory relationship between supervisors and students.Based on the findings of this study, the author provides several recommendations for host universities, supervisors, doctoral students, the CSC,and the Chinese Embassy in Finland to enable them to work together and help CSC doctoral students tackle the aforementioned challenges.
