These reforms that are worldwide seek to create change in education (Adler, 2010). If it's regarding the position of the school principal as designer leader has significant role in the reforms management, but, moreover the role of this article is to the change of the role of the school principal over the years. The functions of the school principal integrate managerial aspects and leadership aspects and its importance is immenseness of the operation of the school organization, both in the terms of the organization customers, the pupils, and in the terms of the organization's staff--teachers. Not less important is the operation and implementation of educational reforms. We have to see the role of the school principal as the most significant to the implementing of the reform in the education system. 展开更多

This paper explores the relationship between leader values and actions in the Chinese context.The Chinese Value Instrument(CVI)and the Strategic Leadership Questionnaire(SLQ)were used as the primary data collection tools.The CVI was used to measure the presence of ten values:(1)social harmony,(2)benevolence and honesty,(3)initiative and innovation(challenge and creativity),(4)achievement and power,(5)zhongyong(practicality and modesty),(6)stability,(7)familial loyalty,(8)happiness,(9)renqing(sympathy)and guanxi(personal relationships),and(10)freedom and equity.The findings indicate that achievement and initiative were at the low end of the value continuum.Familial loyalty,social harmony,and benevolence were at the high end of the value continuum.The SLQ measured the managing,transforming,bonding,bridging,and bartering actions leaders use to mobilize and gain support from followers.The findings indicate that the Chinese school principal management prototype is formed around transforming and bonding actions.This prototype changes depending on role assignment and school type.A connection between leader values and actions was established with regard to the values of achievement and power,benevolence and honesty,and stability. 展开更多

This paper reports findings from a comparative study of urban vs.rural school principals in China.It is an extension and replication of an earlier study on the profiles and preparation of school leaders in the US and China.The study illustrates modern portraits-demographic characteristics of urban and rural principals in China,explores their entry perspectives and examines their professional commitment to principalship as a lifelong career.Findings from the comparative study indicate that urban and rural school principals in China differ greatly in their profiles and characteristics.They share similar intrinsic or extrinsic reasons for becoming principals,but they also vary on some key reasons.Unfortunately,most of the principals in our study are not firmly committed to principalship as a lifelong career because of a range of disturbing factors.Findings from this study shed new light on the profiles and preparation of educational leaders in China and offer thoughtful recommendations for change to both Chinese and international education community. 展开更多

Purpose:As a borrowed concept,science,technology,engineering,and mathematics(STEM)education holds limited relevance in many country contexts.This study investigates how school administrators in Turkey view STEM education from three dimensions:(a)their understanding of STEM education,(b)their experiences of STEM implementations,and(c)their perception of their roles in STEM implementation.Design/Approach/Methods:This phenomenological study analyzes the perceptions of school principals working in prominent high schools in Turkey.Findings:The findings indicate that there are gaps in STEM implementation at both the conceptual level and the school level,including epistemological issues,infrastructural gaps,mismatch with overall organizational culture,and knowledge and skill gaps.Despite efforts to integrate STEM education into educational practices,significant deficiencies are making it an unrealistic practice in Turkey.Originality/Value:While the literature on STEM education is expanding,a few empirical studies focus on school management in relation to STEM education.Arguably,despite promising to transform science and mathematics teaching,STEM education appears to have limited relevance to science and mathematics teaching in Turkeyrendering it yet another example of concept and policy borrowing in education. 展开更多
