In cognitive linguistics,debates on the status and functions of categorization have been a heated issue.In semantics and second language acquisition,scholars have discussed and achieved vocabulary acquisition from different perspectives and academic levels.Vocabulary learning exerts a fundamental role in second language vocabulary acquisition(SLVA),and it is closely related to learners’cognitive competence.However,studies on second language vocabulary acquisition under the categorization theory in cognitive linguistics have received less attention from linguists when compared with other studies.This paper employs two representative dimensions,the basic-level effect and the prototype effect,under the categorization theory to further delve into the implications on second language vocabulary acquisition.This article first provides a comprehensive introduction to the nature and the approaches of the categorization theory,and then analyzes the relations and implications for second language vocabulary acquisition under the categorization theory from the perspective of the basic-level and the prototype effects.The research results showed that the basic-level effect on SLVA is mainly on the classification of word categories distinguished from the superordinate and subordinate categories,while the prototype effect is more on understanding the complexity and use of word meaning. 展开更多

In the second language acquisition, the study focus of linguistics is the influence of age factors which has always been considered as one of the most controversial issues. Some experts hold that the younger the better and would get good competence to learn language well, meanwhile others believe that adult have more strong motivation and competence.Based on the Brain Plasticity Theory and the Critical Period Hypothesis, and the intention of this thesis is to reveal such a hypothesis that the younger the learner who starts to learn a second language, the greater performance that he will achieve like a native does, through the comparative research between children and adults. The subjects are 100 Chinese learners who begin learning at different levels and ages. According to the results of integrated scores and a collection of the data in the questionnaire, an analysis show that the results acquired would be consistent with the hypothesis.The intention of this research is not only to argue which is better, earlier or later, but also an trial, through investigation and study, to provide some insights and suggestion to the existent issues, especially the children second language education and college English study in China. 展开更多

Under the influence of Chomsky's idea of the innate language faculty, language aptitude is seen as a special ability which is separate from general cognitive ability in the field of SLA. Thus, some linguists(Krashen, 1985) argue that language acquisition is a natural process and the acquired language knowledge contributes to the actual use of a second language. Furthermore,language learning through teaching or error correction is a conscious process which only means the learner knows the language knowledge, but it does not mean the learner can use this learnt knowledge to express something. However, Cummins(1979) argues that there are two independent language abilities, i.e., basic interpersonal communication skills and academic language proficiency. BICS refers to the ability required for oral communication and it can be acquired naturally, while CALP is in relation to one's academic language ability which can be developed by formal instruction. Cummins' proposal has made a great contribution to the awareness of classroom instruction in developing learners' academic skills including academic writing in SLA. The principle goal of this paper is to consider the characteristics of academic essays and the writing strategies of them. The major claim of this paper is that an academic essay is written for the purpose of explaining something, comparing two different things, analyzing facts, or trying to convince readers to accept the author's perspectives. Therefore, it is significant to write an academic essay by employing the strategies of definition, serializing, comparison, classification, and critical analysis, etc. 展开更多

Swain's(1985) "Output Hypothesis"maintains that output performsthree functions,namely,the"noticing/triggering function",the"hypothesis-testing"function,and the " metalinguistic" function.Based on the " Noticing Hypothesis",this study aims to investigate the role of the noticing function of output in second language acquisition.The major findings of this research are summarized as follows:1) when composing,the learner could notice linguistic problems in their ineterlanguaeamong which problems arising from vocabulary and sentence were the most prominent.2) with more attention paid to vocabulary,the learner could notice linguistic forms of various aspects when comparing their original text to the modelsof writing.And they could partially incorporate what they hadnoticed in models into their subsequent revision.3) through models of writing learning,the EG learners performed better than the CG learnersin error correction in Composition2,which proves that output with subsequent input learning has superiority over output without relevant input followed in facilitatingthe acquisition of accuracy of linguistic forms. 展开更多
