Earthquakes pose significant perils to the built environment in urban areas. To avert the calamitous aftermath of earthquakes,it is imperative to construct seismic resilient cities.Due to the intricacy of the concept of urban seismic resilience(USR),its assessment is a large-scale system engineering issue. The assessment of USR should be based on the notion of urban seismic capacity(USC)assessment, which includes casualties, economic loss, and recovery time as criteria.Functionality loss is also included in the assessment of USR in addition to these criteria. The assessment indicator system comprising five dimensions(building and lifeline infrastructure, environment, society, economy, and institution)and 20 indicators has been devised to quantify USR.The analytical hierarchy process(AHP)is utilized to compute the weights of the criteria, dimensions, and indicators in the urban seismic resilience assessment(USRA)indicator system. When the necessary data for a city are obtainable, the seismic resilience of that city can be assessed using this framework. To illustrate the proposed methodology,a moderate-sized city in China was selected as a case study. The assessment results indicate a high level of USR,suggesting that the city possesses strong capabilities to withstand and recover from potential future earthquakes. 展开更多

High-voltage electrical post equipment is generally installed on steel supports, which amplifies the seismic inputs and degrades the seismic performance of equipment. This study proposed a variable cross-section damped steel support frame(VCDFS)with viscous dampers to reduce seismic responses of both tall and low-rise electrical equipment. The VCDFS contains a trapezoidal damper layer to generate rocking motions, enabling the diagonal viscous dampers to dissipate seismic inputs.A theoretical model of post equipment with VCDFS is established, and an optimal design procedure is proposed. The analysis shows that the remaining static stiffness ratio λ_(k) is the key parameter that determines the effectiveness of the VCDFS.The VCDFS reduces the average displacement and stress response of a post insulator by 39.4%and 44.6%,respectively,together with a significant decrease in the dynamic amplification factor. Therefore,it is recommended to use the VCDFS instead of the conventional latticed-steel frame in earthquake zones. 展开更多

To improve the resilience of railway stations,a typical station was selected as the research object, and an isolation design was introduced.Twenty-four groups of near-fault pulse-like ground motions were selected. The seismic resilience of the no-isolation railway stations(NIRS)and the isolation railway stations(IRS)were compared to provide a numerical result of the improvement in resilience. The results show that in the station isolation design, the station's functional requirements and structural characteristics should be considered and the appropriate placement of isolation bearings is under the waiting room.Under the action of a rare earthquake, the repair cost, repair time, rate of harm and death of the IRS were decreased by 8.04 million,18.30 days,6.93×10^(-3)and 1.21×10^(-3),respectively,when compared to the NIRS.The IRS received a seismic resilience grade of three-stars and the NIRS only one-star,indicating that rational isolation design improves the seismic resilience of stations. Thus, for the design of stations close to earthquake faults,it is suggested to utilize appropriate isolation techniques to improve their seismic resilience. 展开更多

Seismic-induced liquefaction of sandy soils can fail foundations in the vicinity of buildings. To investigate the effect of a non-free field subsurface seismic history on the ability of saturated sandy soils to resist liquefaction, four shaking events with different accelerations were input to the sandy soils in the non-free-field.The results of the study revealed that:(1)Shallow soils that are not free-field undergo acceleration amplification effects after being subjected to seismic loading.(2)Building overburden pressure reduces the sensitivity of the shallow soils directly below in small and moderate earthquakes, which are more prone to rearranging and forming unstable structures under strong seismic effects. The excess pore pressure response on the load side resembles that of a free site, with the depth range of the liquefaction strength of soils affected by the seismic history, increasing progressively as input seismic intensity increases.(3)After experiencing earthquakes of different intensities, the excess pore pressure directly below the building overburden pressure at 0.1 m and 0.2 m is greater than that at the side.At the same time, the side of the building structure is more prone to liquefaction than the soil directly below it. 展开更多

Damage to electrical equipment in an earthquake can lead to power outage of power systems.Seismic fragility analysis is a common method to assess the seismic reliability of electrical equipment. To further guarantee the efficiency of analysis,multi-source uncertainties including the structure itself and seismic excitation need to be considered.A method for seismic fragility analysis that reflects structural and seismic parameter uncertainty was developed in this study. The proposed method used a random sampling method based on Latin hypercube sampling(LHS)to account for the structure parameter uncertainty and the group structure characteristics of electrical equipment. Then, logistic Lasso regression(LLR)was used to find the seismic fragility surface based on double ground motion intensity measures(IM).The seismic fragility based on the finite element model of an±1000 kV main transformer(UHVMT)was analyzed using the proposed method. The results show that the seismic fragility function obtained by this method can be used to construct the relationship between the uncertainty parameters and the failure probability. The seismic fragility surface did not only provide the probabilities of seismic damage states under different IMs,but also had better stability than the fragility curve.Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis of the structural parameters revealed that the elastic module of the bushing and the height of the high-voltage bushing may have a greater influence. 展开更多

Soil nonlinear behavior displays noticeable effects on the site seismic response. This study proposes a new functional expression of the skeleton curve to replace the hyperbolic skeleton curve.By integrating shear modulus and combining the dynamic skeleton curve and the damping degradation coefficient, the constitutive equation of the logarithmic dynamic skeleton can be obtained, which considers the damping effect in a soil dynamics problem.Based on the finite difference method and the multi-transmitting boundary condition,a 1D site seismic response analysis program called Soilresp1D has been developed herein and used to analyze the time-domain seismic response in three types of sites. At the same time, this study also provides numerical simulation results based on the hyperbolic constitutive model and the equivalent linear method. The results verify the rationality of the new soil dynamic constitutive model. It can analyze the mucky soil site nonlinear seismic response, reflecting the deformation characteristics and damping effect of the silty soil. The hysteresis loop area is more extensive, and the residual strain is evident. 展开更多

Face stability is an essential issue in tunnel design and construction.Layered rock masses are typical and ubiquitous;uncertainties in rock properties always exist. In view of this,a comprehensive method, which combines the Upper bound Limit analysis of Tunnel face stability, the Polynomial Chaos Kriging, the Monte-Carlo Simulation and Analysis of Covariance method(ULT-PCK-MA),is proposed to investigate the seismic stability of tunnel faces.A two-dimensional analytical model of ULT is developed to evaluate the virtual support force based on the upper bound limit analysis. An efficient probabilistic analysis method PCK-MA based on the adaptive Polynomial Chaos Kriging metamodel is then implemented to investigate the parameter uncertainty effects.Ten input parameters, including geological strength indices, uniaxial compressive strengths and constants for three rock formations, and the horizontal seismic coefficients, are treated as random variables. The effects of these parameter uncertainties on the failure probability and sensitivity indices are discussed. In addition, the effects of weak layer position, the middle layer thickness and quality, the tunnel diameter, the parameters correlation, and the seismic loadings are investigated, respectively. The results show that the layer distributions significantly influence the tunnel face probabilistic stability, particularly when the weak rock is present in the bottom layer. The efficiency of the proposed ULT-PCK-MA is validated, which is expected to facilitate the engineering design and construction. 展开更多

Accurate prediction of formation pore pressure is essential to predict fluid flow and manage hydrocarbon production in petroleum engineering.Recent deep learning technique has been receiving more interest due to the great potential to deal with pore pressure prediction. However, most of the traditional deep learning models are less efficient to address generalization problems. To fill this technical gap,in this work,we developed a new adaptive physics-informed deep learning model with high generalization capability to predict pore pressure values directly from seismic data.Specifically, the new model, named CGP-NN,consists of a novel parametric features extraction approach(1DCPP),a stacked multilayer gated recurrent model(multilayer GRU),and an adaptive physics-informed loss function.Through machine training, the developed model can automatically select the optimal physical model to constrain the results for each pore pressure prediction. The CGP-NN model has the best generalization when the physicsrelated metricλ=0.5.A hybrid approach combining Eaton and Bowers methods is also proposed to build machine-learnable labels for solving the problem of few labels. To validate the developed model and methodology,a case study on a complex reservoir in Tarim Basin was further performed to demonstrate the high accuracy on the pore pressure prediction of new wells along with the strong generalization ability. The adaptive physics-informed deep learning approach presented here has potential application in the prediction of pore pressures coupled with multiple genesis mechanisms using seismic data. 展开更多

Seismic isolation is an effective strategy to mitigate the risk of seismic damage in tunnels. However, the impact of surface-reflected seismic waves on the effectiveness of tunnel isolation layers remains under explored. In this study,we employ the wave function expansion method to provide analytical solutions for the dynamic responses of linings in an elastic half-space and an infinite elastic space.By comparing the results of the two models,we investigate the seismic isolation effect of tunnel isolation layers induced by reflected seismic waves. Our findings reveal significant differences in the dynamic responses of the lining in the elastic half-space and the infinitely elastic space.Specifically, the dynamic stress concentration factor(DSCF)of the lining in the elastic half-space exhibits periodic fluctuations, influenced by the incident wave frequency and tunnel depth, while the DSCF in the infinitely elastic space remain stable.Overall, the seismic isolation application of the tunnel isolation layer is found to be less affected by surface-reflected seismic waves. Our results provide valuable insights for the design and assessment of the seismic isolation effect of tunnel isolation layers. 展开更多

With the successful application and breakthrough of deep learning technology in image segmentation, there has been continuous development in the field of seismic facies interpretation using convolutional neural networks. These intelligent and automated methods significantly reduce manual labor, particularly in the laborious task of manually labeling seismic facies. However, the extensive demand for training data imposes limitations on their wider application. To overcome this challenge,we adopt the UNet architecture as the foundational network structure for seismic facies classification, which has demonstrated effective segmentation results even with small-sample training data.Additionally,we integrate spatial pyramid pooling and dilated convolution modules into the network architecture to enhance the perception of spatial information across a broader range. The seismic facies classification test on the public data from the F3 block verifies the superior performance of our proposed improved network structure in delineating seismic facies boundaries.Comparative analysis against the traditional UNet model reveals that our method achieves more accurate predictive classification results,as evidenced by various evaluation metrics for image segmentation.Obviously, the classification accuracy reaches an impressive 96%.Furthermore,the results of seismic facies classification in the seismic slice dimension provide further confirmation of the superior performance of our proposed method, which accurately defines the range of different seismic facies. This approach holds significant potential for analyzing geological patterns and extracting valuable depositional information. 展开更多

Monitoring seismicity in real time provides significant benefits for timely earthquake warning and analyses. In this study,we propose an automatic workflow based on machine learning(ML)to monitor seismicity in the southern Sichuan Basin of China. This workflow includes coherent event detection, phase picking, and earthquake location using three-component data from a seismic network.By combining Phase Net,we develop an ML-based earthquake location model called Phase Loc,to conduct real-time monitoring of the local seismicity. The approach allows us to use synthetic samples covering the entire study area to train Phase Loc,addressing the problems of insufficient data samples, imbalanced data distribution, and unreliable labels when training with observed data.We apply the trained model to observed data recorded in the southern Sichuan Basin,China, between September 2018 and March 2019.The results show that the average differences in latitude, longitude, and depth are 5.7 km,6.1 km,and 2 km,respectively, compared to the reference catalog.Phase Loc combines all available phase information to make fast and reliable predictions, even if only a few phases are detected and picked. The proposed workflow may help real-time seismic monitoring in other regions as well. 展开更多

Earthquakes triggered by dynamic disturbances have been confirmed by numerous observations and experiments. In the past several decades, earthquake triggering has attracted increasing attention of scholars in relation to exploring the mechanism of earthquake triggering, earthquake prediction, and the desire to use the mechanism of earthquake triggering to reduce, prevent,or trigger earthquakes.Natural earthquakes and large‐scale explosions are the most common sources of dynamic disturbances that trigger earthquakes. In the past several decades, some models have been developed, including static, dynamic, quasi‐static, and other models. Some reviews have been published, but explosiontriggered seismicity was not included. In recent years, some new results on earthquake triggering have emerged. Therefore, this paper presents a new review to reflect the new results and include the content of explosion‐triggered earthquakes for the reference of scholars in this area.Instead of a complete review of the relevant literature, this paper primarily focuses on the main aspects of dynamic earthquake triggering on a tectonic scale and makes some suggestions on issues that need to be resolved in this area in the future. 展开更多

The Arkhangelsk Seismic Network(ASN)of the N.Laverov Federal Center for Integrated Arctic Research of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, founded in 2003,includes 10 permanent seismic stations located on the coasts of the White,Barents, and Kara Seas and on the Arctic archipelagos of Novaya Zemlya,Franz Josef Land, and Severnaya Zemlya. The network is registered with the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks and the International Seismological Center. We used not only ASN data to process earthquakes but also the waveforms of various international seismic stations. The 13,000 seismic events were registered using ASN data for 2012-2022,and for 5,500 of them,we determined the parameters of the earthquake epicenters from the European Arctic. The spatial distribution of epicenters shows that the ASN monitors not only the main seismically active zones but also weak seismicity on the shelf of the Barents and Kara Seas. The representative magnitude of ASN was ML,rep=3.5.The level of microseismic noise has seasonal variations that affect the registration capabilities of each station included in the ASN and the overall sensitivity of the network as a whole. In summer, the sensitivity of the ASN decreased owing to the increasing microseismic and ambient noises, whereas in winter, the sensitivity of the ASN increased significantly because of the decrease. 展开更多

On February 6,2023,two earthquakes with magnitudes of M_(W) 7.8 and M_(W) 7.5 struck southeastern Turkey, causing significant casualties and economic losses. These seismic events occurred along the East Anatolian Fault Zone,a convergent boundary between the Arabian Plate and the Anatolian Subplate. In this study,we analyze the M_(W) 7.8 and M_(W) 7.5 earthquakes by comparing their aftershock relocations, tomographic images, and stress field inversions. The earthquakes were localized in the upper crust and exhibited steep dip angles.Furthermore, the aftershocks occurred either close to the boundaries of low and high P-wave velocity anomaly zones or within the low P-wave velocity anomaly zones. The East Anatolia Fault, associated with the M_(W) 7.8 earthquake, and the SürgüFault, related to the M_(W) 7.5 earthquake, predominantly experienced shear stress. However, their western sections experienced a combination of strike-slip and tensile stresses in addition to shear stress. The ruptures of the M_(W) 7.8 and M_(W) 7.5 earthquakes appear to have bridged a seismic gap that had seen sparse seismicity over the past 200 years prior to the 2023 Turkey earthquake sequence. 展开更多

The presence of discontinuities(e.g.faults,fractures,veins,layering)in crystalline rocks can be challenging for seismic interpretations because the wide range of their size, orientation, and intensity, which controls the mechanical properties of the rock and elastic wave propagation, resulting in equally varying seismic responses at different scales. The geometrical characterisation of adjacent outcrop discontinuity networks allows a better understanding of the nature of the subsurface rocks and aids seismic interpretation. In this study,we characterise the discontinuity network of the Balmuccia peridotite(BP)in the IvreaeVerbano Zone(IVZ),northwestern Italy. This geological body is the focus of the Drilling the Ivrea eVerbano zonE(DIVE),an international continental scientific drilling project, and two active seismic surveys,SEismic imaging of the Ivrea ZonE(SEIZE)and high-resolution SEIZE(Hi-SEIZE),which aim to resolve the subsurface structure of the DIVE drilling target through high-resolution seismic imaging. For fracture characterisation,we developed two drone-based digital outcrop models(DOMs)at two different resolutions(10^(-3)-10 m and 10^(-1)-10^(3)m),which allowed us to quantitatively characterise the orientation, size, and intensity of the main rock discontinuities. These properties affect the seismic velocity and consequently the interpretation of the seismic data.We found that(i)the outcropping BP discontinuity network is represented by three more sets of fractures with respect to those reported in the literature;(ii)the discontinuity sizes follow a power-law distribution, indicating similarity across scales, and(iii)discontinuity intensity is not uniformly distributed along the outcrop. Our results help to explain the seismic behaviour of the BP detected by the SEIZE survey, suggesting that the low P-wave velocities observed can be related to the discontinuity network, and provide the basic topological parameters(orientation, density, distribution, and aperture)of the fracture network unique to the BP.These,in turn, can be used for interpretation of the Hi-SEIZE seismic survey and forward modelling of the seismic response. 展开更多

A resilience-incorporated risk assessment framework is proposed and demonstrated in this study to manifest the advantageous seismic resilience of precast concrete frame(PCF)structures with“dry”connections in terms of their low damage and rapid recovery. The framework integrates various uncertainties in the seismic hazard, fragility, capacity, demand, loss functions, and post-earthquake recovery. In this study, the PCF structures are distinguished from ordinary reinforced concrete frame(RCF)structures by characterizing multiple limit states for the PCF based on its unique damage mechanisms.Accordingly, probabilistic story-wise pushover analyses are performed to yield story-wise capacities for the predefined limit states. In the seismic resilience analysis,a step-wise recovery model is proposed to idealize the functionality recovery process, with separate considerations of the repair and non-repair events. The recovery model leverages the economic loss and downtime to delineate the stochastic post-earthquake recovery curves for the resilience loss estimation. As such, contingencies in the probabilistic post-earthquake repairs are incorporated and the empirical judgments on the recovery parameters are largely circumvented. The proposed framework is demonstrated through a comparative study between two“dry”connected PCFs and one RCF designed as alternative structural systems for a prototype building. The results from the risk quantification indicate that the PCFs show reduced loss hazards and lower expected losses relative to the RCF.Particularly, the PCF equipped with energy dissipation devices at the“dry”connections largely reduces the expected economic loss, downtime, and resilience loss by 29%,56%,and 60%,respectively,compared to the RCF. 展开更多

(Multichannel)Singular spectrum analysis is considered as one of the most effective methods for seismic incoherent noise suppression. It utilizes the low-rank feature of seismic signal and regards the noise suppression as a low-rank reconstruction problem. However,in some cases the seismic geophones receive some erratic disturbances and the amplitudes are dramatically larger than other receivers. The presence of this kind of noise, called erratic noise, makes singular spectrum analysis(SSA)reconstruction unstable and has undesirable effects on the final results. We robustify the low-rank reconstruction of seismic data by a reweighted damped SSA(RD-SSA)method.It incorporates the damped SSA,an improved version of SSA,into a reweighted framework. The damping operator is used to weaken the artificial disturbance introduced by the low-rank projection of both erratic and random noise. The central idea of the RD-SSA method is to iteratively approximate the observed data with the quadratic norm for the first iteration and the Tukeys bisquare norm for the rest iterations. The RD-SSA method can suppress seismic incoherent noise and keep the reconstruction process robust to the erratic disturbance. The feasibility of RD-SSA is validated via both synthetic and field data examples. 展开更多

High resolution of post-stack seismic data assists in better interpretation of subsurface structures as well as high accuracy of impedance inversion. Therefore, geophysicists consistently strive to acquire higher resolution seismic images in petroleum exploration. Although there have been successful applications of conventional signal processing and machine learning for post-stack seismic resolution enhancement, there is limited reference to the seismic applications of the recent emergence and rapid development of generative artificial intelligence. Hence, we propose to apply diffusion models, among the most popular generative models, to enhance seismic resolution. Specifically, we apply the classic diffusion model—denoising diffusion probabilistic model(DDPM), conditioned on the seismic data in low resolution, to reconstruct corresponding high-resolution images. Herein the entire scheme is referred to as SeisResoDiff. To provide a comprehensive and clear understanding of SeisResoDiff, we introduce the basic theories of diffusion models and detail the optimization objective's derivation with the aid of diagrams and algorithms. For implementation, we first propose a practical workflow to acquire abundant training data based on the generated pseudo-wells. Subsequently, we apply the trained model to both synthetic and field datasets, evaluating the results in three aspects: the appearance of seismic sections and slices in the time domain, frequency spectra, and comparisons with the synthetic data using real well-logging data at the well locations. The results demonstrate not only effective seismic resolution enhancement, but also additional denoising by the diffusion model. Experimental comparisons indicate that training the model on noisy data, which are more realistic, outperforms training on clean data. The proposed scheme demonstrates superiority over some conventional methods in high-resolution reconstruction and denoising ability, yielding more competitive results compared to our previous research. 展开更多
