On the Praxis-Oriented Semiotic Aesthetics in Eastern European Marxism

Eastern European Marxism,taking a critical stance towards structuralism,gave rise to a unique paradigm of praxis-oriented semiotic aesthetics.This novel approach posits that signs emerge from humans’social praxis and also function as a means of praxis.It further delves into the principle governing the generation and usage of signs,i.e.,the Economy Principle,the homogenization of signs,the situatedness or contextual constraints,as well as their aesthetic features and transcendental attributes.As a result,the praxis-oriented semiotic aesthetics within Eastern European Marxism exhibits distinct theoretical value.

A Study on Honeysuckle Pattern in Yungang Grottoes From the Perspective of Semiotics

Buddhism was introduced to China during the Han Dynasty and took root in China,integrating with local culture.The classic pattern of honeysuckle in Buddhism,as a type of border decoration,was also introduced to China with the eastward advancement of Buddhism.This article aims to conduct a semiotic study on the patterns of honeysuckle patterns in the Yungang Grottoes.Firstly,the concept of honeysuckle patterns was explained,and typical honeysuckle patterns that appeared in the Yungang Grottoes were systematically organized and classified.Then,with the help of semiotic principles,the production of symbols for honeysuckle patterns in the Yungang Grottoes was analyzed from a semiotic perspective.Based on this,the semiotic characteristics of honeysuckle patterns in the Yungang Grottoes and their signifier and referent systems were analyzed in depth.Finally,the shape and connotation of honeysuckle patterns in their evolution and development were summarized.The honeysuckle pattern occupies an important position in the history of traditional patterns in China,so the honeysuckle pattern in Yungang Grottoes,as a decorative theme,not only has important research significance,but its semiotic value is also worth exploring and studying.

Material That Talks:Material Use of Architectural Surface in Semiotic Implications

According to the language of post-modern architecture which Charles Jencks proposed in the 1980s,form has been very crucial for architectural language expression.However,many suggestions also imply that the material which is deployed for building is also significant in the linguistic expression of architecture.Based on this consideration,the material use of architecture will also contain semiotic implications,whether for architects or for social consensus.How the material talks and what it says are two questions that need to be clarified.To answer these two questions,some empirical works in architecture will be examined to reveal the messages which could be delivered in architectural materials.Before this,semiotic debates in architecture will be reviewed.Then,two empirical works,one in the West and one in the East,will be considered particularly for their material deployments on the surface(façade).Since the architectural surface is the most tangible part of architecture in terms of material use,the surfaces of both projects will be discussed in detail with their implications and the atmospheres which the materials formulated and created.This paper will conclude with a consideration of the possible implications from these projects and also the different expressions of material use,which will help us to rethink the expression of the material use of architectural surface.

How Rustic Videos Influence Youth’s Linguistic Expression: An Analysis Based on Semiotics, Meme Theory and Media Spectacle Theory

The surge in popularity of rustic videos has spawned a great number of Internet memes, such as Internet trendy words growing from dialects and strange pronunciations, picture memes made from video screenshots, and mesmerizing music with a vernacular flavor. Due to their reproducibility, social interaction, and involvement, these rustic videos adhere to the fundamental logic of the propagation of online memes. Rustic videos are widely disseminated as online memes on TikTok (the Chinese version), are often reproduced and used by young people in social contact, and have become a unique linguistic symbol in modern internet culture. As a symbolic carrier that transports the consciousness of the video creator and viewer, it is widely employed in the communication and engagement of young people on a regular basis, progressively altering their linguistic expression. This specific semiotic interaction has deconstructed and recreated the conventional media culture spectacle. This research examines the influence of rustic videos on TikTok on the linguistic expressions of modern youth from the perspectives of meme theory and semiotics, as well as the impact of rustic videos on the media spectacle from the standpoint of media spectacle theory. It also examines in depth the effects of the popularity of rustic videos on China’s economy and culture.

Systematic Study on Semiotic Landscape Elements in Ancient Water Towns in South Yangtze River Area

Based on basic concepts of semiotics,component types of the semiotic landscape element system in ancient water towns in south Yangtze River area were analyzed as well as their roles in constructing the overall image of ancient water towns in this area,and their realistic significance in the present landscape construction in China was discussed.

The Role of Abstraction in the Evolution of Semiotic Systems

The action of signs in human lives and in the evolution of cultures is to be understood in the light of semiosis, the process by which a meaning is given to all things in the world. Writing systems, as a sort of semiotic creation, evolve according to the laws of semiosis and the rhythm of human stepping ahead. This paper is an attempt to afford evidence of three relevant facts: a) A close contact, or at least a remarkable coincidence, of writing cultures in ancient times. b) An apparent and undeniable process of divergence of writing systems over centuries. c) A tendency to a new convergence of writing systems, as an ongoing process inferable from the new symbols of an increasingly globalised world. We propose that one of the elements that push these processes forward is abstraction, and we suggest that abstraction might be the leading factor in the evolution of writing and semiotic systems.

The Meaning Composition of Chinese Calligraphy Sign

This paper clarifies the composition of meaning in the art of Chinese calligraphy on the basis of American semiotician Charles Morris’s three divisions of sign,namely,“Syntactics,Semantics,Pragmatics”.The syntactical dimension of Chinese calligraphy sign is the artistic meaning of the form of Chinese character.“Semantical dimension”refers to semantic referents of linguistic signs and their literary significance,“pragmatical dimension”refers to the use and interpretation of calligraphy.The study of the three dimensions of meaning in Chinese calligraphy reveals a complex and unique composition of sign meaning.Chinese calligraphy deforms the structure and form of Chinese characters while retaining their semantic invariance.In this way,calligraphy acquires more practical semantic and symbolic meanings through the carrier of Chinese characters which are also linguistic symbols at the same time.Chinese calligraphy is dominated by the meaning of sign forms,taking into account the linguistic reference and the use of sign,and the three dimensions of meaning interact and promote each other,building a dynamic and multidimensional space of sign meaning.

Perception of Landscape Significance from the Perspective of Semiotics

Landscape was considered as an image in the eye of human beings,and also an object for people experiencing physically and aesthetically on the basis of which landscape perception was regarded as a compound content,and focus of studies on this aspect has transferred from biology-based to social culture-based.It was proposed that landscape was not only a kind of space,but also a demonstration of human ideology,and for all viewers,landscape meant a kind of significance experience.According to Ferdiand de Sausure's "signifier" and "signified",and Charles Sanders Peirce's theory of categories,connotations of landscape symbols were discussed,landscape considered as a symbol text,and the relationship between "signifier" and "signified" borrowed to stress that landscape symbols expressed the significance accepted by audience via certain forms.On this basis,significance characterization of landscape symbols was classified into graphic symbols,indicative symbols and symbolic symbols.Symbolic symbols were believed as the most complicated ones because corresponding cultural backgrounds of viewers were required.Ambiguity and openness of landscape significance was elaborated,as well as its relationship with cultural context design,to provide reference for future designs.

Research Status of Navigation Idioms in Semiotics

The present situation of study of Chinese and English navigation idioms is examined from the perspective of semiotics.Firstly,the author expounds the background of the study on navigation idioms.Secondly,the paper expounds several core concepts related to research.In the end,the article summarizes the vast majority of navigation idioms from the perspective of language and cultural relations with the relevant published literature,as well as cnki.net and English journals,and rarely studies navigation idi⁃oms systematically from the perspective of semiotics.Therefore,it is necessary to carry out this study and find out the cultural simi⁃larities and differences from another perspective.

Semiotic knowledge toward heritage product in tourism industry： A case of Terengganu

In order to provide an appropriate context for the current state of the heritage product in tourism industry, semiotic knowledge become an important role to know deeply the identity, philosophy, and also the meaning of behind the actual product. Scott （2000） stresses the requirement of aesthetic and semiotic content in a creative product, instead of creativity. But, how many of retailers and salespersons in heritage product believe the semiotic as knowledge to present the product and opportunities in their selling？ According to Kotler （2000） a good personal selling will provide a detailed explanation or demonstration of the product. The message can be varied by the salesperson to fit the motivations and interests or each prospective customer. So, the purpose of this paper is to closely examine the level of awareness among retailers and salesperson toward the important of semiotic knowledge as part of strategic persuasion in a selling process. This survey study will develop a sample among retailers and salesperson in Kuala Terengganu as a respondent who give the feedback to fulfill the research questions.

An Analysis of the Ballad of the Sad Café from the Perspective of Grei mas'Semiotic Square

Greimas's Semiotic Square is a new approach in analyzing literary works.Based on Sassure and Jacnson's claim on binary opposition,Gereimas extends it to four actants and adds contradictory relationships.By assign meanings to the four actants,an analysis of the complicated relationship between the roles in a text can be made and a revelation of the theme of the text can be realized.Previous studies of this novel take it as an excellent work revealing loneliness and isolation is thought to be the basic condition of human existence.Other study covers the effects of the unrequited love.Quiet differently,this paper tries to interpret this novel by Greimas'semiotic square and thereby revealing the widely accepted theme of this novel that isolation and loneliness is the final destiny of human being in modern society.

An Introduction to Brand Semiotics

This paper attempts to review the semiotic study of brands.Due to the various traditions of semiotics,the approach in question contains several ways of interpretation,including structural semiotics and Peircean semiotics.Former researchers mainly focus on the first method and seldom employ the second one.Despite a review of former studies,this paper also puts forward a new pattern of study and points out the significance of the semiotic approach and queries remained to be settled.

The Semiotics of Photography： Towards Objective Hermeneutics

How can we know what a photograph means？ What messages or codes exist semiotically that help us to interpret it？ The mass consumption of images is reflected in the large number of contests, scholarships, galleries, museographic exhibitions and especially in advertising： What are the semiotic parameters that can be established for a reliable and clear judgment to discriminate one photo from another？ For critics or judges, artists or the general public, this article seeks to answer these questions by proposing a semiotic analysis based on new advances in science, in psychology of perception and neurobiology of vision; said methodology, currently being applied intensively at ESAV and used in the postgraduate studies of the present author, seeks to facilitate the understanding of the meaning--to improve the hermeneutics---ofthe photographic image in a systematic and objective way.

The Parable of the Chicken House： Charles S. Peirce, Complex/Dynamic Systems, and Environmental Science

This paper describes how scientist-philosopher Charles S. Peirce （1839-1914） develops theories that lead eventually to contemporary complex/dynamic systems. In both Peirce and complexity theory, possible bridges appear between analogical/reductionist representations and metaphorical/creative symbols. In complex/dynamic terms, Peirce＇s scientific theories become a conceptual egg that hatches a century later in complex systems, which is relevant in turn to environmental science and engineering.

A Semiotic Analysis of Programming Languages

The paper presents an analysis of computer programming languages based on the semiotics of Charles S. Peirce. The author describes how such languages could evolve in order to achieve some of the expressive characteristics of natural languages. This description evinces otherwise unnoticed differences between natural languages and programming languages, showing that Peircean semiotics is an efficient analysis tool. This suggests further research on the technical features needed to implement an easier way to program computers.

Prototypicality Gradient and Similarity Measure: A Semiotic-Based Approach Dedicated to Ontology Personalization

This paper introduces a new approach dedicated to the Ontology Personalization. Inspired by works in Cognitive Psychology, our work is based on a process which aims at capturing the user-sensitive relevance of the categorization process, that is the one which is really perceived by the end-user. Practically, this process consists in decorating the Specialization/Generalization links (i.e. the is-a links) of the hierarchy of concepts with 2 gradients. The goal of the first gradient, called Conceptual Prototypicality Gradient, is to capture the user-sensitive relevance of the categorization process, that is the one which is perceived by the end-user. As this gradient is defined according to the three aspects of the semiotic triangle (i.e. intentional, extensional and expressional dimension), we call it Semiotic based Prototypicality Gradient. The objective of the second gradient, called Lexical Prototypicality Gradient, is to capture the user-sensitive relevance of the lexicalization process, i.e. the definition of a set of terms used to denote a concept. These gradients enrich the initial formal semantics of an ontology by adding a pragmatics defined according to a context of use which depends on parameters like culture, educational background and/or emotional context of the end-user. This paper also introduces a new similarity measure also defined in the context of a semiotic-based approach. The first originality of this measure, called SEMIOSEM, is to consider the three semiotic dimensions of the conceptualization underlying an ontology. Thus, SEMIOSEM aims at aggregating and improving existing extensional-based and intentional-based measures. The second originality of this measure is to be context-sensitive, and in particular user-sensitive. This makes SEMIOSEM more flexible, more robust and more close to the end-user’s judgment than the other similarity measures which are usually only based on one aspect of a conceptualization and never take the end-user’s perceptions and purposes into account.

Semiotics of the Political Image： The 2012 Mexican Election

This study will attempt to carry out a semiotic analysis of the images that proliferated during the 2012 electoral process in Mexico, from the pre-carnpaign period to June 19, 2012. The analysis carried out here is based on the categories proposed by Eliseo Ver6n pertaining to the study of political images--from analysis of the semiological image to media discoursivities--which fit within the framework of the digital public sphere and participative visual activism. The official candidate websites are taken as sample, along with two Facebook sites which summarize critical images as well as the independent informational sites created by the #YoSoy132 movement.

Analysis of the trend of translation criteria from the semiotic point of view

During the past two to three decades, developments in the fields of transformational grammar, general and contrastive linguistics, semantics, pragmatics, information theory, anthropology, semiotics, psychology and discourse analysis etc., have produced great influence on general translation theory, enabling the discipline to broaden the areas of investigation and to offer fresh insights into the concept of correspondence on transference between linguistic and cultural systems. Through this essay, the author would like to cast some lights on the relationship between translation and semiotics and tries to predict the developing trend of translation criteria from the angle of sociosemiotics.

Multilingual Practices and Multiple Contestations in the Linguistic Landscape of Selected Towns in Oromia:A geosemiotic perspective

This study analyzed a linguistic landscape,which is a relatively recent development in sociolinguistic research committed to the investigation of the visual manifestations of the relationships observed between language or semiosis and society in the public space.There has been less attention on the semiotic interpretations in the public environments despite the ubiquitous nature of such signs in Ethiopia.This study intends to fill this gap through Semiotic Landscape research.By means of mixed methods,qualitative and quantitative,it aims to discover the contestations in the Linguistic Landscape(LL,henceforth)of selected urban environments in Oromia.The study employed a theoretical concept of geosemiotics from social semiotics as an analytical tool.Visual data consisting of 1275 photographs of signs were collected from the main streets of Adama,Jimma and Sebeta towns from different domains of sign using bodies.Besides,data were collected through in-depth interviews with major LL actors,selected based on purposive sampling technique.The analysis demonstrated that some top-down and most of bottom-up signs showed varieties of multilingual practices,contestations,identity constructions and other related social concerns.The absence of a clear policy on language use on signs at both federal and regional levels has resulted in contestations.
