Buddhism was introduced to China during the Han Dynasty and took root in China, integrating with local culture. The classic pattern of honeysuckle in Buddhism,as a type of border decoration, was also introduced to China with the eastward advancement of Buddhism. This article aims to conduct a semiotic study on the patterns of honeysuckle patterns in the Yungang Grottoes.Firstly, the concept of honeysuckle patterns was explained, and typical honeysuckle patterns that appeared in the Yungang Grottoes were systematically organized and classified. Then, with the help of semiotic principles, the production of symbols for honeysuckle patterns in the Yungang Grottoes was analyzed from a semiotic perspective.Based on this, the semiotic characteristics of honeysuckle patterns in the Yungang Grottoes and their signifier and referent systems were analyzed in depth. Finally, the shape and connotation of honeysuckle patterns in their evolution and development were summarized. The honeysuckle pattern occupies an important position in the history of traditional patterns in China,so the honeysuckle pattern in Yungang Grottoes,as a decorative theme, not only has important research significance, but its semiotic value is also worth exploring and studying. 展开更多

The concept of post-truth has been on the world’s agenda since 2016.Perhaps this concept, which is frequently encountered in political life, provides the speaker with a freer speaking platform.Politicians, instead of presenting the reality to their constituents as it is,want to reshape this reality according to their own ideology and present it to the recipient.Politicians have certain objectives in creating such a virtual reality. These aims can be listed as keeping the voters, increasing the voting potential, and attracting undecided voters to their favor. The common result of all these aims is to gain political power or to remain in the existing power.Post-truth reality is constructed relatively more easily in social media environments. The construction of reality can be through beliefs or emotions. In such ways, the recipient is tried to be persuaded, and thus behavioral change is achieved. One of the most necessary subjects for this artificial reality atmosphere is the anti-subject.The idea that the anti-subject does not know the truth that we(you and I)know and believe and is trying to destroy it is the main theme of post-truth discourse.Politicians try to persuade the voters to believe in their own truth by expressing this idea to them. There are many examples of this around the world. In this study, firstly, the concept of post-truth is examined and its various definitions are discussed. The distinctions between the concepts of real and truth are analyzed and then it is explained how and for what purposes the concept of post-truth is used in politics.Following the comparison of post-truth and fake news, the concept is discussed within the framework of sender-receiver interaction in terms of communication. The concept is tried to be elucidated with the modalities such as/convincing/,/believing/,/being/,/appearing/.Besides,using the semiotic square, the study also tries to reveal the different purposes and forms of use of the concept of post-truth.As a result,it has been observed that the concept of post-truth is effective in many areas of contemporary societies, and rather than real information, expected and desired information has become more important. 展开更多

Eastern European Marxism, taking a critical stance towards structuralism, gave rise to a unique paradigm of praxis-oriented semiotic aesthetics. This novel approach posits that signs emerge from humans’social praxis and also function as a means of praxis. It further delves into the principle governing the generation and usage of signs,i.e.,the Economy Principle, the homogenization of signs, the situatedness or contextual constraints,as well as their aesthetic features and transcendental attributes. As a result, the praxis-oriented semiotic aesthetics within Eastern European Marxism exhibits distinct theoretical value. 展开更多

Semiotics is one of the core concepts in contemporary philosophy, linguistics and many other ideological fields.Although it is a new discipline founded in the 20th century, researchers from both the East and the West have studied the phenomena of symbols for a long time.Western semiotics came into existence as a new discipline during the 1960s,whose origin could be traced back to ancient Greek philosophy. In ancient China, there was no concept of semiotics, but Chinese ancestors practiced divination by some special symbols, which might be considered the sprouts of semiotics. Those methods in divination were called Lianshanyi in the Xia Dynasty and Guizangyi in the Shang Dynasty. In the Zhou Dynasty, the forms of divinations and their explanations were more plentiful, which were collectively called Zhouyi, posing as"the leading classics and the source of‘Tao’".The study on Zhouyi found that its symbolic concepts possessed explainable relevance to those in Western semiotics represented by Saussure,Peirce and Morris, especially between the three key elements:"hexagram image","hexagram judgment"and"hexagram meaning"in Zhouyi corresponding to the three core formulas:"Sign=Signifier+Signified","Sign=Relation(Medium,Object,Interpret)"and"M=ME+MP+MF"of Western semiotics. The study suggested that exploration into the symbolic concepts of ancient Chinese philosophical classics might provide new perspectives for the interpretation of Western semiotics. 展开更多

Semiotics, mostly as a theory of meaning, has a long history both in China and in the West.Although there had been little interaction between these two independent traditions before the 20th century,we can fi nd some interesting similarities and differences in their semiotic thoughts that continue to influence how we conceptualize things today.Contemporary China, for example,is widely seen as being characterized by a Marxist epistemology which was imported from the West, but a close examination shows that this dominant theory of knowledge is as much a product of its own native tradition of ontological realism propounded by Ouyang Jian 17 centuries ago. With the advent of globalization of semiotics in the 20th century,Chinese and Western scholars are now able to take direct advantage of each other’s theoretical resources which often result in new insights critical to the advancement of human knowledge. Two examples of such East-West interaction are Peirce’s trichotomy of signs being appropriated for the classification of Chinese characters and Qian Zhongshu’s"sides-andhandles theory of metaphor"serving as a critique of the bewildered and bewildering cognitive science championed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. It is in this sense that semiotics is becoming increasingly global or cross-cultural on top of its interdisciplinary trademark. 展开更多

The scientific study of crime comes under the general categories of forensic science and criminology, which include a large set of related branches, from forensic psychology to computer forensics. The emergence of forensic semiotics as part of this interdisciplinary amalgam is relatively unknown among both criminologists and semioticians. This paper provides an overview of the main objectives of forensic semiotics and its importance to the study of crime. One of the premises of forensic semiotics is that there is a thematic and interpretive continuity between actual crimes and their fictional representations. Actually, contemporary semiotics itself can be seen to start with Peirce's interest in detective fiction, from which he developed several of his key ideas, including the theory of abduction. This paper also discusses some case studies that have been carried out under the rubric of forensic semiotics, which indicate the relevance of semiotic analysis to the study of crime. 展开更多

Since 1994 when Dinda L. Gorlée published her dissertation "Semiotics and the Problem of Translation: With Special Reference to the Semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce", Douglas Robinson has been critically thinking about the essential problems concerning semiotranslation. In 2016, he published Semiotranslating Peirce to conduct a critical analysis of Gorlée's theories concerning semiotranslation with the Finnish translations of T. S. Eliot's poem and Wittgenstein's philosophy, and responded to 32 problems concerning what semiotranslation is, who or what the worldly agent of semiotranslation is, where semiotranslation occurs, whether semiotranslation is really irreversible, etc. As for their divergences, this review conducts a critical analysis, and further criticizes them on the scope of translation semiotics, the range of sign reference, the types of semiotic translation, and the role of translator in the translational sign transformation. 展开更多

The official dress systems of Ming and Qing Dynasties were formulated by the rulers of those feudal societies to maintain their ruling status. As well as being a functional indication of the type and power of officials, the rank badge,Buzi or Bufu(补子,补服),on official clothes indirectly declared the elegant and brave characteristics of civil and military officers, and also reflected the philosophy of the unity and harmony between human and nature.Informed by social semiotics theory, the Buzi patterns embody the culture and arts of ancient Chinese clothing, producing novel meaning within corresponding social contexts, which can be inherited and developed in today's society. Moreover, the wearing of official unified clothes and rank badges by officials and civil servants should be encouraged since those persons often serve as a role model and are subject to public's scrutiny. Thus ancient Chinese culture and arts can flourish,a good social order and law be maintained, and a harmonious and civilized society built. 展开更多

The study of language is based either on the word or on the sentence as basic units.Ferdinand de Saussure opted for the word;other linguists later preferred the sentence or chose to ignore the difference between word and sentence.Words, however, have extra-linguistic functions related to the topologies of thought, the spontaneous geometrical imageries of meaningful mental figuration,as we know them from sign posts, from verbal descriptions, and from the semiotics of diagrams. If words, rather than sentences, are in this sense the essential connectors of language and thought, then the general architecture of linguistic structures, including semantics and syntax, should be centered around this lexical“window”into the thinking mind, and the semiotic modes of language and signs may then be described by similar architectures directly connected to the figurative mind itself. This paper offers tentative connected models of the architectures of language, signs, and the figurative mind, and suggests the possibility of interpreting Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiological intuitions in the sense of a semiotics of the mind along these cognitive-semiotic lines. 展开更多

What Semiotics Is

Charles Peirce compares the action of signs to what our experience of blue would have been had we been born wearing blue-tinted glasses: it is an influence on our experience that runs so deep we do not even become aware of its influence until some circumstance or other forces us to realize its action in shaping our identity and lives. For human animals, it was our becoming aware of the difference between the world as it appears to be in everyday experience and the world as it appears through telescopes and microscopes that, "slow-by-slow", forced intellectuals of modern times to recognize the need for recognizing a point of view that transcended the difference between the critical control of objectification reliant mainly upon "common experience" and the extension of that control to include the "special experiences" made possible by experimentation reliant upon instruments with results mathematically integrated. That realization marked the dawn of the postmodern era of intellectual culture, the era where it comes to be understood that the action of signs(semiosis) provides the framework for the whole of human knowledge, from its animal origins in sensation to its farthest reaches beyond the material world in the contemplation of spiritual dimensions within the physical order of being as independent of awareness by finite mind. 展开更多

This article examines the complex interplay between abstraction and representation in the ontology of images.Images inhabit an in-between space as tangible artifacts that also convey intangible ideas and meanings. The analysis synthesizes perspectives from across the history of philosophy to elucidate how images bridge abstraction and representation through their form and function. It engages with ongoing epistemological and aesthetic debates concerning the dual nature of images.Plato’s theory of ideal forms is outlined as an early attempt to define abstraction.Modern semiotic theories are discussed for their insights into how images create meaning through codes and signs.Phenomenology offers an alternative approach by prioritizing the sensorial, affective impact of images.Poststructuralism problematizes representation in the context of mechanical reproduction and simulacra. While diverse, these philosophical frameworks all grapple with the issues images pose between abstract essence and concrete appearance, conceptual ideas and sensory manifestations. The article reveals the richness of images as liminal constructs that collapse dualisms in their creative interfacing of material forms and immaterial meanings. It concludes that this ontological ambiguity empowers images as mediators between imagination and perception, subjectivity and reality. 展开更多

Landscape was considered as an image in the eye of human beings, and also an object for people experiencing physically and aesthetically on the basis of which landscape perception was regarded as a compound content, and focus of studies on this aspect has transferred from biology-based to social culture-based.It was proposed that landscape was not only a kind of space, but also a demonstration of human ideology, and for all viewers, landscape meant a kind of significance experience.According to Ferdiand de Sausure's "signifier" and "signified",and Charles Sanders Peirce's theory of categories, connotations of landscape symbols were discussed, landscape considered as a symbol text, and the relationship between "signifier" and "signified" borrowed to stress that landscape symbols expressed the significance accepted by audience via certain forms. On this basis, significance characterization of landscape symbols was classified into graphic symbols, indicative symbols and symbolic symbols.Symbolic symbols were believed as the most complicated ones because corresponding cultural backgrounds of viewers were required.Ambiguity and openness of landscape significance was elaborated,as well as its relationship with cultural context design,to provide reference for future designs. 展开更多
