The effect of nanoclay on the phase-separation behavior of poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(vinyl acetate)(PMMA/PVAc) blends has been mainly investigated by small-angle laser light scattering. It is found that the effect of clay on the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase-separation for PMMA/PVAc blends seems inconsistent. The kinetics phaseseparation rate decreases, while the thermodynamics parameters, cloud points Tc and delay time tD of isothermal phaseseparation also decrease, and the variation amplitude depends on the matrix composition. The affinity of clay to PMMA results in the composition difference between the border layer and the polymer matrix and further causes the concentration fluctuation at the early stage of phase separation to reduce Tc and tD. On the other hand, the decrease of phase-separation rate is caused by the mechanical barrier effect of clay on the macromolecular diffusion of blend matrix. Hence, such seemingly counterintuitive results on the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase-separation are attributed to different dominant factors. 展开更多

The effect of clay on the morphology and phase-separation behavior of poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(styrene- co-acrylonitrile) (PMMA/SAN) blends and the variation of clay dispersion have been investigated. With the evolution of phase separation in PMMA/SAN, most of the clays are first located at the boundaries between PMMA and SAN, and then gradually move to the PMMA-rich domain, owing to the affinity of clay to PMMA. The introduction of clay causes the increase of binodal and spinodal temperatures of PMMA/SAN and enlarges their metastable region, indicating the phase stabilizing effect of clay on the matrix. But the influence of clay on the cloud points obviously depends on the composition of PMMA/SAN. The selective adsorption of PMMA on the clay results in the difference between the composition of surface layer and that of polymer matrix. Hence, the clay plays the role of an agent changing the conditions of phase structure formation. 展开更多

Phase separation was studied by the optical microscopy in blends of nylon 6 (PA6) with sodium salt of ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymer (PEMA).The image collecting technology was used to keep track of the development of blends at a certain temperature. The fractal dimension of phase separation was calculated by the image solving technology according to the fractal theory and the self similarity behavior of the process was proved. The relationship of the fractal behavior with composition and experimental temperature was discussed. The fractal behavior of the crystallization development of the crystal phase of PA6 in blends was also discussed and the fractal behavior calculated. 展开更多

The copolymer of acrylic acid and acrylonitrile has been synthesized and pervaporation properties of the copolymeric membranes have been investigated. In order to elucidate the influence of membrane-permeate interaction on the pervaporation of water-ethanol mixtures and to prepare much improved membranes, the membranes have been treated with alkali metal, alkali earth metal and transition metal salt aqueous solutions. The treated membranes (ionized membranes) exhibited higher separation factors than the untreated membranes. The separation factors of various alkali metal cation membranes decreased in the following order : Li^+>Na^+>K^+, and the permeation rates showed an opposite tendency. The dependence of pervaporation behavior on the copolymer composition ,feed concentration and operating temperature have been studied with both ionized and non-ionized membranes. The apparent activation energies of water and ethanol permeation were calculated. 展开更多

The current work focused on the investigation of charge and separation characteristics of nanofiltration (NF) membrane embracing dissociated functional groups under different electrolyte solutions. The electro-kinetic method was carried out to assess the membrane volume charge density (X) with different salt concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 10 mol. m-3 and different electrolyte species, such as type 1-1, type 2-1 and type 3-1. The Donnan steric pore model-dielectric exclusion (DSPM- DE) model was employed to evaluate the separation characteristics of the NF membrane for wide range of electrolyte concentration (from 25.7 to 598.9mol·m^-3). The results indicated that the dissociation of the hydro- philic functional groups and the specific adsorption contributed to charge formation on membrane surface. The former played a dominant role in type 1-1 and type 2-1 electrolytes at dilute aqueous solutions (0.1-0.5 mol · m^3). However, for type 3-1 electrolyte, specific adsorp- tion should contribute to the charge effect to a large extent. Moreover, the correlation between the volume charge density and feed concentration was in accordance with Freundlich isotherm. Furthermore, it was found that the separation characteristic of NF membrane could be evaluated well by DSPM-DE model coupling with electro-kinetic method in a whole concentration range. 展开更多

A computational investigation of the unsteady separation behavior of rigid bodies in Mach-4 flow is carried out. Two rigid bodies, a sphere and a cube, initially stationary, centroid axially aligned, are released and thereafter fly freely according to the aerodynamic forces experienced. During the separation process, the smaller cube can experience different types of movement and our principal interest here is the non-dimensional transverse velocity of it. The separation behavior is investigated for interactions between a sphere and a cube with different mass ratio and a constant initial distance between them. The qualitative separation behavior and the final transverse velocity of the small body are found to vary strongly with the mass ratio but less sensitive to the initial distance between the two bodies. At a critical mass ratio for a given distance, the smaller body transit from entrainment within the flow region bounded by the larger body's shock to expulsion and the accumulated transverse velocity of the small body is close to maximum. This phenomenon is the so-called ‘shock-wave surfing' phenomenon noted by Laurence & Deiterding for two spheres at hypersonic Mach numbers. Then we investigate the separation behavior of a sphere interaction with a rotary cube and with a non-rotary cube for a given mass ratio and different distance between them. The rotary is found to increase the likelihood of ‘surfing'. Only at a certain initial distance for a given mass ratio the rotary effect of cube can be neglectable. 展开更多
