A modified energy-balance equation accounting for P-delta effects and hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete members is derived. Reduced hysteretic properties of structural components due to combined stiffness and strength degradation and pinching effects, and hysteretic damping are taken into account in a simple manner by utilizing plastic energy and seismic input energy modification factors. Having a pre-selected yield mechanism, energy balance of structure in inelastic range is considered. P-delta effects are included in derived equation by adding the external work of gravity loads to the work of equivalent inertia forces and equating the total external work to the modified plastic energy. Earthquake energy input to multi degree of freedom(MDOF) system is approximated by using the modal energy-decomposition. Energybased base shear coefficients are verified by means of both pushover analysis and nonlinear time history(NLTH) analysis of several RC frames having different number of stories. NLTH analyses of frames are performed by using the time histories of ten scaled ground motions compatible with elastic design acceleration spectrum and fulfilling duration/amplitude related requirements of Turkish Seismic Design Code. The observed correlation between energy-based base shear force coefficients and the average base shear force coefficients of NLTH analyses provides a reasonable confidence in estimation of nonlinear base shear force capacity of frames by using the derived equation. 展开更多

In this paper, a finite element method is developed to numericallyevaluate the shear coefficient of Timoshenko's beam with multiplyconnected cross section. With focus on analyzing shear stressesdistributed at the neutral axis of the beam, an improved definitionof the shear coeffi- cient is presented. Based on this definition, aGalerkin-type finite element formulation is proposed to analyze theshear stresses and shear deflections. Numerical solutions of theexamples for some typical cross-sections are compared with thetheoretical results. The shear coefficient of tower sections of theTsing Ma Bridge is calculated by use of the proposed approach, sothat the finite element modeling of The bridge can be developed withthe accurate values of the sectional properties. 展开更多

Based on six-degree-of-freedom three-dimensional shaking table tests, the seismic response of a recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) frame was obtained. The analysis results indicate that the maximum story shear force and overturning moment reduce proportionally along the height of the model under the same earthquake wave. The story shear force, base shear coefficient and overturning moment of the structure increase progressively as the acceleration amplitude increases. The base shear coefficient is primarily controlled by the peak ground acceleration (PGA). The relationships between the PGA and the shear coefficient as well as between the PGA and the dynamic amplification factor are obtained by mathematical fitting. The dynamic amplification factor decreases rapidly at the elastic-plastic stage, but decreases slowly with the development of the elastic-plasticity stage. The results show that the RAC frame structure has reasonable deformability when compared with natural aggregate concrete frame structures. The maximum inter-story drift ratios of the RAC frame model under frequent and rare intensity 8 test phases are 1/266 and 1/29, respectively, which are larger than the allowable value of 1/500 and 1/50 according to Chinese seismic design requirements. Nevertheless, the RAC frame structure does not collapse under base excitations with PGAs from 0.066 g up to 1.170 g. 展开更多

In this article, a shear plate was mounted on the bottom in a wave flume and direct measurements of the smooth and rough bed shear stress under regular and irregular waves were conducted with the horizontal force exerted on the shear plates by the bottom shear stress in the wave boundary layer. Under immobile bed condition, grains of sand were glued uniformly and tightly onto the shear plate, being prevented from motion with the fluid flow and generation of sand ripples. The distribution of the bottom mean shear stress varying with time was measured by examining the interaction between the shear plate and shear transducers. The relation between the force measured by the shear transducers and its voltage is a linear one. Simultaneous measurements of the bottom velocity were carried out by an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV), while the whole process was completely controlled by computers, bottom shear stress and velocity were synchronously measured. Based on the experimental results, it can be concluded that (1) the friction coefficient groews considerably with the increase of the Reynolds number, (2) the shear stress is a function varying with time and linearly proportional to the velocity. Compared with theoretical results and previous experimental data, it is shown that the experimental method is feasible and effective, A further study on the bed shear stress under regular or irregular waves can be carried out. And applicability to the laboratory studies on the initiation of sediments and the measurement of the shear stress after sediment imigration. 展开更多

Holistic understanding of wind behaviour over space, time and height is essential for harvesting wind energy application. This study presents a novel approach for mapping frequent wind profile patterns using multidimensional sequential pattern mining(MDSPM).This study is illustrated with a time series of 24 years of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts European Reanalysis-Interim gridded(0.125°×0.125°)wind data for the Netherlands every 6 h and at six height levels. The wind data were first transformed into two spatio-temporal sequence databases(for speed and direction, respectively). Then, the Linear time Closed Itemset Miner Sequence algorithm was used to extract the multidimensional sequential patterns, which were then visualized using a 3D wind rose,a circular histogram and a geographical map. These patterns were further analysed to determine their wind shear coefficients and turbulence intensities as well as their spatial overlap with current areas with wind turbines. Our analysis identified four frequent wind profile patterns. One of them highly suitable to harvest wind energy at a height of 128 m and 68.97%of the geographical area covered by this pattern already contains wind turbines. This study shows that the proposed approach is capable of efficiently extracting meaningful patterns from complex spatio-temporal datasets. 展开更多
