The effects of environmental vertical wind shear (VWS) on the intensity and rainfall asymmetries in Tropical Storm (TS) Bilis (2006) have been analyzed based on TRMM/TMI-estimated surface rainfall data, QuikSCAT wind fields, 850- and 200-hPa winds of the NCEP-NCAR reanalysis, precipitation data at 5-min intervals from automatic weather stations over China's Mainland, and the best track data of TS Bilis (2006). The results show that the simultaneous and 6-hour-lagged correlation coefficients between VWS and storm intensity (the minimum central sea level pressure) are 0.59145 and 0.57438 (P 〈0.01), respectively. The averaged VWS was found to be about 11 m s-1 and thus suppressed the intensification of Bilis (2006). Distribution of precipitation in Bilis (2006) was highly asymmetric. The azimuthally-averaged rainfall rate in the partial eyewall, however, was smaller than that in a major outer rainband. As the storm intensified, the major rainband showed an unusual outward propagation. The VWS had a great impact on the asymmetric distribution of precipitation. Consistent with previous modeling studies, heavy rainfall generally occurred downshear to downshear-left of the VWS vector both near and outside the eyewall, showing a strong wavenumber-one asymmetry, which was amplified as the VWS increased. 展开更多

In this study, the effect of vertical wind shear(VWS)on the intensification of tropical cyclone(TC)is investigated via the numerical simulations. Results indicate that weak shear tends to facilitate the development of TC while strong shear appears to inhibit the intensification of TC.As the VWS is imposed on the TC,the vortex of the cyclone tends to tilt vertically and significantly in the upper troposphere.Consequently, the upward motion is considerably enhanced in the downshear side of the storm center and correspondingly, the low-to mid-level potential temperature decreases under the effect of adiabatic cooling, which leads to the increase of the low-to mid-level static instability and relative humidity and then facilitates the burst of convection. In the case of weak shear, the vertical tilting of the vortex is weak and the increase of ascent, static instability and relative humidity occur in the area close to the TC center. Therefore, active convection happens in the TC center region and facilitates the enhancement of vorticity in the inner core region and then the intensification of TC.In contrast, due to strong VWS,the increase of the ascent, static instability and relative humidity induced by the vertical tilting mainly appear in the outer region of TC in the case with stronger shear, and the convection in the inner-core area of TC is rather weak and convective activity mainly happens in the outer-region of the TC.Therefore, the development of a warm core is inhibited and then the intensification of TC is delayed.Different from previous numerical results obtained by imposing VWS suddenly to a strong TC,the simulation performed in this work shows that, even when the VWS is as strong as 12 m s-1,the tropical storm can still experience rapid intensification and finally develop into a strong tropical cyclone after a relatively long period of adjustment. It is found that the convection plays an important role in the adjusting period. On one hand, the convection leads to the horizontal convergence of the low-level vorticity flux and therefore leads to the enhancement of the low-level vorticity in the inner-core area of the cyclone. On the other hand, the active ascent accompanying the convection tends to transport the low-level vorticity to the middle levels. The enhanced vorticity in the lower to middle troposphere strengths the interaction between the low-and mid-level cyclonical circulation and the upper-level circulation deviated from the storm center under the effect of VWS.As a result, the vertical tilting of the vortex is considerably decreased, and then the cyclone starts to develop rapidly. 展开更多

The effects of vertical wind shear on tropical cyclone(TC) intensity change are examined based on the TC data from the China Meteorological Administration and the NCEP reanalysis daily data from 2001 to 2006.First,the influence of wind shear between different vertical levels and averages in different horizontal areas are compared. The results indicate that the effect of wind shear between 200 and 850 hPa averaged within a 200-800 km annulus on TC intensity change is larger than any other calculated vertical wind shear.High-latitude and intense TCs tend to be less sensitive to the effects of VWS than low-latitude and weak TCs.TCs experience time lags between the imposition of the shear and the weakening in TC intensity.A vertical shear of 8-9 m/s(9-10 m/s) would weaken TC intensity within 60 h(48 h).A vertical shear greater than 10 m/s would weaken TC intensity within 6 h.Finally,a statistical TC intensity prediction scheme is developed by using partial least squares regression, which produces skillful intensity forecasts when potential predictors include factors related to the vertical wind shear.Analysis of the standardized regression coefficients further confirms the obtained statistical results. 展开更多

Based on the ERA5 reanalysis datasets during 1980-2019,a total of eleven zonal shear lines(ZSLs)that caused heavy precipitation and lasted more than 60 hours over the Tibetan Plateau in summer are selected for composite analysis.By decomposing the kinetic energy(K)near the ZSL into divergent and rotational kinetic energies(K_(D)and K_(R))and the kinetic energy of interaction between the divergent wind and the rotational wind(K_(R)D),the influence of the rotational and divergent winds on the evolution of the ZSL intensity is investigated from the perspective of K_(D)and K_(R).The main results are as follows. The ZSL is a comprehensive reflection of rotation and convergence. The intensity evolution of ZSL is essentially synchronized with those of K,K_(R),and K_(RD)but lags behind K_(D)by about three hours. The enhancement of K is mainly contributed by K_(R),which is governed by the conversion from K_(D)to K_(R).Furthermore,the increase in the conversion from K_(D)to K_(R)is controlled by the geostrophic effect term Af,which is determined by the joint enhancement of the zonal rotational and meridional divergent wind components(u_(R)and v_(D)).Therefore,the joint enhancement of u_(R)and v_(D)controls the increase of the ZSL intensity, leading to increased precipitation. 展开更多

Material damage is considered. By introducing the dislocation density function and using the integral transform, the problem is reduced to algebraic equations and can be solved with the collocation dots method in the Laplace domain. Time response of DSIF is calculated with the inverse Laplace integral transform. The results show that the mode Ⅱ DSIF increases with the shear relaxation parameter, shear module and Poisson ratio, while decreases with the swell relaxation parameter. Damage shielding only occurs at the initial stage of crack propagation. The singular index of crack tip is -0.5 and independent on the material parameters, damage conditions of materials, and time. The oscillatory index is controlled by viscoelastic material parameters. 展开更多

The D″layer, located at the bottom of the mantle,is an active thermochemical boundary layer. The upwelling of mantle plumes,as well as possible plate subduction in the D″layer, could lead to large-scale material transformation and mineral deformation, which could result in significant seismic anisotropy. However, owing to limited observations and immense computational cost, the anisotropic structures and geodynamic mechanisms in the D″layer remain poorly understood. In this study,we proposed a new inversion method for the seismic anisotropy in the D″layer quantitatively with shear wave splitting intensities. We first proved the linearity of the splitting intensities under the ray-theory assumption. The synthetic tests showed that, with horizontal axes of symmetry and ray incidences lower than 30°in the D″layer(typical SKS phase),the anisotropy is well resolved. We applied the method to the measured dataset in Africa and Western Europe, and obtained strong D″anisotropy in the margins of the large low shear-wave velocity provinces and subducting slabs. The new method makes it possible to obtain D″anisotropy, which provides essential constraints on the geodynamical processes at the base of the mantle. 展开更多

Rock bolts are extensively utilized in underground engineering as a means of offering support and stability to rock masses in tunnels, mines, and other underground structures. In environments of high ground stress, faults or weak zones can frequently arise in rock formations, presenting a significant challenge for engineering and potentially leading to underground engineering collapse.Rock bolts serve as a crucial structural element for the transmission of tensile stress and are capable of withstanding shear loads to prevent sliding of weak zones within rock mass. Therefore,a complete understanding of the behavior of rock bolts subjected to shear loads is essential. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of the research progress of rock bolts subjected to shear load in three categories:experiment, numerical simulation, and analytical model. The review focuses on the research studies and developments in this area since the 1970s,providing a comprehensive overview of numerous factors that influence the anchorage performance of rock bolts. These factors include the diameter and angle of the rock bolt installation, rock strength, grouting material, bolt material, borehole diameter, rock bolt preload, normal stress, joint surface roughness and joint expansion angle. The paper reviews the improvement of mechanical parameter setting in numerical simulation of rock bolt shear.Furthermore,it delves into the optimization of the analytical model concerning rock bolt shear theory, approached from the perspectives of both Elastic foundation beam theory coupled with Elastoplasticity theory and Structural mechanic methods. The significance of this review lies in its ability to provide insights into the mechanical behavior of rock bolts. The paper also highlights the limitations of current research and guidelines for further research of rock bolts. 展开更多

For the first time, a relationship between ESR signal intensity and grain size distribution (sieve technique) in shear zones within the Atotsugawa fault system have been investigated using fault core rocks. The grain size distributions were estimated using the sieve technique and microscopic observations. Stacks of sieves with openings that decrease consecutively in the order of 4.75 mm, 1.18 mm, 600 μm, 300 μm, 150 μm and 75 μm were chosen for this study. Grain size distributions analysis revealed that samples further from the slip plane have larger d50 (average gain size) (0.45 mm at a distance of 30 - 50 mm from the slip plane) while those close to the slip plane have smaller d50 values (0.19 mm at a distance of 0 - 10 mm from the slip plane). This is due to intensive crushing that is always associated with large displacement during fault activities. However, this pattern was not respected in all shear zones in that, larger d50 values were instead observed in samples close to the slip plane due to admixture of fault rocks from different fault activities. Results from ESR analysis revealed that the relatively finer samples close to the slip plane have low ESR signals intensity while those further away (coarser) have relatively higher signal intensity. This tendency however, is not consistence in some of the shear zones due to a complex network of anatomizing faults. The variation in grain size distribution within some of the shear zones implies that, a series of fault events have taken place in the past thus underscoring the need for further investigation of the possibility of reoccurrence of faults. 展开更多

The effect of vertical wind shear(VWS)directions on the change in western North Pacific tropical cyclone(TC)intensity is revisited in this study. Results show that the differences in the correlations between VWS in different orientations and the change in TC nondimensional intensity highly diminish, although slight differences are still present. The subtle differences in the correlations are likely associated with different synoptic-scale patterns at upper and lower levels. This result suggests that,in addition to thermodynamic effects, dynamic roles of the synoptic-scale patterns associated with the VWS should also be taken into account when the authors examine how VWS in different directions affects TC intensity change. 展开更多

The shear behavior of backfill-rock composites is crucial for mine safety and the management of surface subsidence. For exposing the shear failure mechanism of backfill-rock composites,we conducted shear tests on backfill-rock composites under three constant normal loads, compared with the unfilled rock.To investigate the macro-and meso-failure characteristics of the samples in the shear tests, the cracking behavior of samples was recorded by a high-speed camera and acoustic emission monitoring. In parallel with the experimental test, the numerical models of backfill-rock composites and unfilled rock were established using the discrete element method to analyze the continuous-discontinuous shearing process.Based on the damage mechanics and statistics,a novel shear constitutive model was proposed to describe mechanical behavior. The results show that backfill-rock composites had a special bimodal phenomenon of shearing load-deformation curve,i.e.the first shearing peak corresponded to rock break and the second shearing peak induced by the broken of aeolian sand-cement/fly ash paste backfill. Moreover, the shearing characteristic curves of the backfill-rock composites could be roughly divided into four stages,i.e.the shear failure of the specimens experienced:stage I:stress concentration;stage II:crack propagation;stage III:crack coalescence;stage IV:shearing friction. The numerical simulation shows that the existence of aeolian sand-cement/fly ash paste backfill inevitably altered the coalescence type and failure mode of the specimens and had a strengthening effect on the shear strength of backfillrock composites.Based on damage mechanics and statistics,a shear constitutive model was proposed to describe the shear fracture characteristics of specimens, especially the bimodal phenomenon. Finally, the micro-and meso-mechanisms of shear failure were discussed by combining the micro-test and numerical results. The research can advance the better understanding of the shear behavior of backfill-rock composites and contribute to the safety of mining engineering. 展开更多

Deep engineering disasters, such as rockbursts and collapses, are more related to the shear slip of rock joints.A novel multifunctional device was developed to study the shear failure mechanism in rocks.Using this device, the complete shearedeformation process and long-term shear creep tests could be performed on rocks under constant normal stiffness(CNS)or constant normal loading(CNL)conditions in real-time at high temperature and true-triaxial stress.During the research and development process, five key technologies were successfully broken through:(1)the ability to perform true-triaxial compressioneshear loading tests on rock samples with high stiffness;(2)a shear box with ultra-low friction throughout the entire stress space of the rock sample during loading;(3)a control system capable of maintaining high stress for a long time and responding rapidly to the brittle fracture of a rock sample as well;(4)a refined ability to measure the volumetric deformation of rock samples subjected to true triaxial shearing;and(5)a heating system capable of maintaining uniform heating of the rock sample over a long time.By developing these technologies, loading under high true triaxial stress conditions was realized. The apparatus has a maximum normal stiffness of 1000 GPa/m and a maximum operating temperature of 300C.The differences in the surface temperature of the sample are constant to within5C.Five types of true triaxial shear tests were conducted on homogeneous sandstone to verify that the apparatus has good performance and reliability. The results show that temperature, lateral stress, normal stress and time influence the shear deformation, failure mode and strength of the sandstone. The novel apparatus can be reliably used to conduct true-triaxial shear tests on rocks subjected to high temperatures and stress. 展开更多

Deep metal mines are often mined using the high-level pillars with subsequent cementation backfilling(HLSCB)mining method. At the design stage,it is therefore important to have a reasonable method for determining the shear strength of the high-level pillars(i.e.cohesion and internal friction angle)when they are supported by cemented backfilling. In this study,a formula was derived for the upper limit of the confining pressure σ3max on a high-level pillar supported by cemented backfilling in a deep metal mine.A new method of estimating the shear strength of such pillars was then proposed based on the Hoek eBrown failure criterion. Our analysis indicates that the horizontal stress σhh acting on the cemented backfill pillar can be simplified by expressing it as a constant value.A reasonable and effective value for σ3max can then be determined. The value of s3max predicted using the proposed method is generally less than 3 MPa.Within this range, the shear strength of the high-level pillar is accurately calculated using the equivalent MohreCoulomb theory. The proposed method can effectively avoid the calculation of inaccurate shear strength values for the high-level pillars when the original HoekeBrown criterion is used in the presence of large confining pressures,i.e.the situation in which the cohesion value is too large and the friction angle is too small can effectively be avoided. The proposed method is applied to a deep metal mine in China that is being excavated using the HLSCB method. The shear strength parameters of the high-level pillars obtained using the proposed method were input in the numerical simulations. The numerical results show that the recommended level heights and sizes of the high-level pillars and rooms in the mine are rational. 展开更多

Cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and the incidence is increasing, highlighting the need for effective strategies to treat this disease.Exercise has emerged as fundamental therapeutic medicine in the management of cancer, associated with a lower risk of recur-rence and increased survival.Several avenues of research demonstrate reduction in growth, proliferation, and increased apoptosis of cancer cells, including breast, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancer, when cultured by serum collected after exercise in vitro(i.e.,the cultivation of cancer cell lines in an experimental setting, which simplifies the biological system and provides mechanistic insight into cell responses). The underlying mechanisms of exercise-induced cancer suppressive effects may be attributed to the alteration in circulating factors, such as skeletal muscle-induced cytokines(i.e.,myokines)and hormones.However,exercise-induced tumor suppressive effects and detailed information about training interventions are not well investigated, constraining more precise application of exercise medicine within clinical oncology. To date,it remains unclear what role different training modes(i.e.,resistance and aerobic training)as well as volume and intensity have on exercise-condi-tioned serum and its effects on cancer cells.Nevertheless, the available evidence is that a single bout of aerobic training at moderate to vigorous intensity has cancer suppressive effects, while for chronic training interventions, exercise volume appears to be an influential candidate driving cancer inhibitory effects regardless of training mode.Insights for future research investigating training modes, volume and intensity are provided to further our understanding of the effects of exercise-conditioned serum on cancer cells. 展开更多

To reveal the mechanism of shear failure of en-echelon joints under cyclic loading, such as during earthquakes,we conducted a series of cyclic shear tests of en-echelon joints under constant normal stiffness(CNS)conditions. We analyzed the evolution of shear stress, normal stress, stress path, dilatancy characteristics, and friction coefficient and revealed the failure mechanisms of en-echelon joints at different angles. The results show that the cyclic shear behavior of the en-echelon joints is closely related to the joint angle, with the shear strength at a positive angle exceeding that at a negative angle during shear cycles. As the number of cycles increases, the shear strength decreases rapidly, and the difference between the varying angles gradually decreases.Dilation occurs in the early shear cycles(1 and 2),while contraction is the main feature in later cycles(310).The friction coefficient decreases with the number of cycles and exhibits a more significant sensitivity to joint angles than shear cycles. The joint angle determines the asperities on the rupture surfaces and the block size, and thus determines the subsequent shear failure mode(block crushing and asperity degradation). At positive angles, block size is more greater and asperities on the rupture surface are smaller than at nonpositive angles. Therefore, the cyclic shear behavior is controlled by block crushing at positive angles and asperity degradation at negative angles. 展开更多

Great potential of underground gas/energy storage in salt caverns seems to be a promising solution to support renewable energy. In the underground storage method, the operating cycle unfortunately may reach up to daily or even hourly, which generates complicated pressures on the salt cavern.Furthermore, the mechanical behavior of rock salt may change and present distinct failure characteristics under different stress states, which affects the performance of salt cavern during the time period of full service. To reproduce a similar loading condition on the cavern surrounding rock mass, the cyclic triaxial loading/unloading tests are performed on the rock salt to explore the mechanical transition behavior and failure characteristics under different confinement.Experimental results show that the rock salt samples pre-sent a diffused shear failure band with significant bulges at certain locations in low confining pressure conditions(e.g.5 MPa,10 MPa and 15 MPa),which is closely related to crystal misorientation and grain boundary sliding.Under the elevated confinement(e.g.20 MPa,30 MPa and 40 MPa),the dilation band dominates the failure mechanism, where the large-size halite crystals are crushed to be smaller size and new pores are developing. The failure transition mechanism revealed in the paper provides additional insight into the mechanical performance of salt caverns influenced by complicated stress states. 展开更多

Understanding the anisotropic creep behaviors of shale under direct shearing is a challenging issue. In this context,we conducted shear-creep and steady-creep tests on shale with five bedding orientations (i.e.0°,30°,45°,60°,and 90°),under multiple levels of direct shearing for the first time. The results show that the anisotropic creep of shale exhibits a significant stress-dependent behavior.Under a low shear stress, the creep compliance of shale increases linearly with the logarithm of time at all bedding orientations, and the increase depends on the bedding orientation and creep time.Under high shear stress conditions, the creep compliance of shale is minimal when the bedding orientation is 0°,and the steady-creep rate of shale increases significantly with increasing bedding orientations of 30°,45°,60°,and 90°.The stress-strain values corresponding to the inception of the accelerated creep stage show an increasing and then decreasing trend with the bedding orientation.A semilogarithmic model that could reflect the stress dependence of the steady-creep rate while considering the hardening and damage process is proposed. The model minimizes the deviation of the calculated steady-state creep rate from the observed value and reveals the behavior of the bedding orientation's influence on the steady-creep rate. The applicability of the five classical empirical creep models is quantitatively evaluated. It shows that the logarithmic model can well explain the experimental creep strain and creep rate, and it can accurately predict long-term shear creep deformation.Based on an improved logarithmic model, the variations in creep parameters with shear stress and bedding orientations are discussed. With abovementioned findings,a mathematical method for constructing an anisotropic shear creep model of shale is proposed, which can characterize the nonlinear dependence of the anisotropic shear creep behavior of shale on the bedding orientation. 展开更多

Accurate prediction of tropical cyclone(TC)intensity is challenging due to the complex physical processes involved. Here,we introduce a new TC intensity prediction scheme for the western North Pacific(WNP)based on a time-dependent theory of TC intensification, termed the energetically based dynamical system(EBDS)model, together with the use of a long short-term memory(LSTM)neural network. In time-dependent theory,TC intensity change is controlled by both the internal dynamics of the TC system and various environmental factors, expressed as environmental dynamical efficiency. The LSTM neural network is used to predict the environmental dynamical efficiency in the EBDS model trained using besttrack TC data and global reanalysis data during 1982–2017.The transfer learning and ensemble methods are used to retrain the scheme using the environmental factors predicted by the Global Forecast System(GFS)of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction during 2017–21.The predicted environmental dynamical efficiency is finally iterated into the EBDS equations to predict TC intensity. The new scheme is evaluated for TC intensity prediction using both reanalysis data and the GFS prediction data. The intensity prediction by the new scheme shows better skill than the official prediction from the China Meteorological Administration(CMA)and those by other state-of-art statistical and dynamical forecast systems, except for the 72-h forecast.Particularly at the longer lead times of 96 h and 120 h,the new scheme has smaller forecast errors, with a more than 30%improvement over the official forecasts. 展开更多

The geometric properties of fracture surfaces significantly influence shear-seepage in rock fractures, introducing complexities to fracture modelling. The present study focuses on the hydro-mechanical behaviours of rough rock fractures during shear-seepage processes to reveal how dilatancy and fracture asperities affect these phenomena. To achieve this,an improved shear-flow model(SFM)is proposed with the incorporation of dilatancy effect and asperities. In particular, shear dilatancy is accounted for in both the elastic and plastic stages,in contrast to some existing models that only consider it in the elastic stage.Depending on the computation approaches for the peak dilatancy angle, three different versions of the SFM are derived based on Mohr-Coulomb,joint roughness coefficient-joint compressive strength(JRC-JCS),and Grasselli’s theories.Notably, this is a new attempt that utilizes Grasselli’s model in shearseepage analysis. An advanced parameter optimization method is introduced to accurately determine model parameters, addressing the issue of local optima inherent in some conventional methods. Then, model performance is evaluated against existing experimental results. The findings demonstrate that the SFM effectively reproduces the shear-seepage characteristics of rock fracture across a wide range of stress levels.Further sensitivity analysis reveals how dilatancy and asperity affect hydraulic properties. The relation between hydro-mechanical properties(dilatancy displacement and hydraulic conductivity)and asperity parameters is analysed.Several profound understandings of the shear-seepage process are obtained by exploring the phenomenon under various conditions. 展开更多
